Con

I heard some mumbling and opened my eyes to see who it was. My door was slightly ajar and it was dark in the room. I could see Ryan who was sound asleep with his head resting next to me on the mattress. I could feel his hot breath against the back of my hand as he exhaled out of his beautiful mouth. Then I heard some giggling near the window but could only make out a silhouette of someone kneeling next to the recliner. Then someone suddenly sat straight up in the recliner. Then I heard some more whispering. The voices sounded familiar. "What are you dreaming about?"

Then the person in the recliner leaned forward and whispered something.

It was difficult to hear exactly what they were saying.

Then I recognized Dad’s voice. "…first time in the hay loft."

The other person’s voice sounded familiar too. "Mmm, how could I forget!"

Dad said, "Come on, let’s get out of here so we don’t wake up the boys!"

Dad stood up and from my vantage point they looked as if they were standing toe to toe. Then as they turned to make their exit I immediately recognized the handsome face. It was Michael! Intrigued by what I was seeing, I decided not to let them know that I was awake and remained quiet. Dad reminded me of a little boy gazing up at his hero! Why hasn’t he ever mentioned Michael to me? Michael grew up with Dad and thinks of him as a brother! I suppose it shouldn’t surprise me! Dad’s past has always been a mystery to me. I’ve asked him about his boyhood years but he always manages to steer our conversations so that we end up talking about me. I’ve always felt that he was hiding something. In Iowa both of them spoke fondly of the other, making me believe that they always got along. In fact Michael told us that they used to argue but never fought with each other. Both seemed happy to see the other. Despite this I sense an overwhelming feeling of sadness.

I feel like a voyeur secretly watching them, but seeing Dad so happy was completely out of character and I wanted to know why!

Dad had a hold of Michael’s hand, pulling him along as if in a rush to leave. Michael looked amused at Dad’s behavior and was smiling as they made their way to the door. Dad opened the door and wrapped his arm around Michael’s waist as he followed him out of the room.

Seeing Dad so happy was almost a relief to me, now if only Mom could find happiness!

John

I followed Michael out of the room. "I can’t believe you’re here!"

With me walking behind him, he said, "Well, after reading ‘I feel like I’m at my wit’s end! I really need you now!I thought I better get my ass up here!"

"I’m so happy that you are here!"

Stopping, he turned to face me and said, "Well, you know that I could never refuse you!"

I studied his face and couldn’t tell if he was all that happy to be here. I could feel myself getting angry. If he’s going to give me nothing but attitude then I don’t want him here! I told him before that he doesn’t owe me anything! I looked into his eyes and said, "Listen, I don’t…"

Interrupting, Michael put his hand on my shoulder, smiling, and said, "I see you haven’t lost that Irish temper! Nothing a little sparring won’t take care of!"

Feeling embarrassed, I said, "Sorry, Michael…"

Interrupting me again, he said, "Don’t be, I was messing with you! I’ll quit doing that…well, for now! I really do want to be here! I’ve taken some time off and if it’s okay with you I plan on providing you with a lot of TLC."

"Mmm, that sounds good!"

"Yeah, well, my first priority is for you to get some sleep. You look exhausted!"

"What’s the second priority?"

"Food! You look too skinny!"

"The third priority?"

"Exercise! You need to burn off some of this tension!"

Smiling, "And the fourth?"

"Find us a place to live!"

"Us? Ooh, I like the sound of that!"

Michael smiled and said, "Let’s find a hotel!"

"Yes, let’s!"

We walked up to the desk, the man at the desk said, "May I help you gentlemen?"

Michael said, "Do you have any vacancies?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good! We’re going to be here for a week or two and would like a suite with a kitchenette, a Jacuzzi, and two bedrooms."

"I’m sorry, sir, but we have everything but the two bedroom suite! However we have two adjoining rooms with a door in between?"

"Perfect! We’ll take both rooms!"

Michael tipped the bellboy for bringing up his luggage and then he turned to me and said, "I want you to go to bed now!"

Smiling, I said, "Yes, Dad!"

Michael draped his arm over my shoulders and led me to the bedroom. The closeness was turning me on. I stared at his blurry face. It’s hell getting old! Michael turned down the bed as I undressed. "What time do you have to be up in the morning?"

"5 a.m.….I want to visit Con before my first case in the morning."

"Well, you only have only 4 1/2 hours to sleep!"

Michael smiled and patted the bed, encouraging me to get in it. I rolled my eyes and got in. He tucked me in, gave me a hug, and kissed my forehead. "Good night!"

"Good night, Michael!"

He left the door slightly ajar, allowing just enough light in my room to know that he was still up. I was exhausted but I kept tossing and turning in the bed. After about an hour Michael peeked in my room. I smiled at him. "I knew it! When I didn’t hear any snoring I knew you weren’t sleeping!"

"I don’t snore!"

"The John that I know snores!"

"I can’t sleep! Would you sleep with me?"

Sighing and sounding a little frustrated with me, he said, "Move over!"

I rolled onto my left side. Michael stripped down to his underwear and then snuggled up to spoon me. He planted a kiss on the back of my neck and gave me a hug. Feeling his warmth and bare skin against mine strangely relaxed me enough to go into la la land.

Paula

'I wish I could get some sleep! I've been worried sick about Con! I want to stay at the hospital but Con gets so irritated with me when I’m around and tells me to go home. The only person that he seems to want around is Ryan. I suppose having John or I around only serves as a reminder that all is not well at the Devon residence!’

Beep…beep…beep, I quickly turned the alarm clock off, got up, and stretched. I had better get Andrea up so we can go visit Con before going to work. I walked towards the door and that’s when I noticed her sleeping in my bed. Andrea's been clingy lately. She reminds me a little of John, she doesn't share her feelings, but I can usually tell when something's bothering her. Yesterday she asked if she could help me out in the pharmacy. I enjoy having her around, besides I could use a little help checking for outdated drugs.

"Wake up, Andrea! I want to visit Con before we go to work!"

Yawning and rubbing her eyes, Andrea said, "Okay, Mom."

I dialed Con's telephone number. "Hello?"

"Hi, Ryan! Can I talk to Con?"

Sounding strange, he said, "Um, sure! Paula…?"

"Yes?"

"Oh nothing!"

There was a long silence over the telephone. "Is everything okay, Ryan?"

"No."

Feeling panicky, "Is Con okay?"

"Yes, he's fine! I think he's feeling better today! Here's Con!"

"Hello?"

"¡Buenos días! ¿Cómo hace usted, Conrad?" (Good morning! How are you, Conrad?)

"¡La mamá de buenos días!" (Good morning, Mom.)

"Ryan sounds odd, is everything okay?"

" Hablaré acerca de lo luego. " (I'll talk about it later.)

"Okay? I hope it’s nothing serious?"

"Yes, Mom, I’m doing fine!"

Knowing that he didn’t want to talk about it, I said, "I understand, we’ll talk about it later."

"Aha!"

"Okay, dear! Keep practicing your Spanish."

"Why?"

"Because I want us to take a trip in December to Cancun with you, Andrea and Ryan if he wants to come along!"

"Cool! I mean…Magnífico!"

"Andrea and I will be up in a few minutes!"

"Okay, Mom! Bye!"

Andrea and I ate breakfast and drove to the hospital.

"Good morning, boys!"

Con said, "Good morning!"

Ryan looked nervous. He was wide-eyed and fidgety. "H-hi, Paula!"

I ignored it and placed my hand on Con’s forehead, "You do look better today!"

Smiling, Con said, "Much better! The dizziness and nausea are gone. I feel normal again!"

"That's great to hear! I bet the doctor will let you go home today. When the doctor comes in, I would like to speak with him! Have him call me on my cell phone."

"Okay, Mom!"

"If the doctor discharges you, call me so I can take you home. I think I'll take some days off from work to be home with you in case you need me!"

Rolling his eyes, Con said, "Oh, Mom! I’m fine! Besides, Ryan can look after me!"

"Con, I have agreed not to stay here around the clock only because you have nurses and Ryan here to keep a close eye on you! When you get home I’m going to be watching you two like a hawk! I don’t want any funny business!" I tried to keep a straight face but I couldn’t and started smiling.

"Aw, come on, Mom! We won’t do anything we shouldn’t!"

"And I’ll make sure of that! Besides, you can’t expect Ryan to be at your side 24 hours a day!"

Looking very serious, Ryan said, "I don’t mind, Mrs. Devon!"

Hmm, now I know there’s something wrong! I’ll get it out of him! "Mrs. Devon?"

Ryan corrected himself and said, "I-I mean Paula!"

"Ryan, let's go get some breakfast and then maybe I should take you home so you can get cleaned up."

Ryan smiled and then made a sour face as sniffed his under arm. Looking embarrassed, he said, "Yes, I think you're right, I do need to go home."

"Come on, Ryan, let's go to the cafeteria."

Ryan was quiet and only ate a piece of toast. "Ryan, honey, you look tired."

Ryan placed the toast back on his plate and pushed it away. "I'm fine!"

"What's the matter, Ryan?"

Ryan looked down at that table as tears formed in his eyes and began to run down his cheeks. I got up and sat next to him. "What's the matter, honey?"

Ryan shook his head no as his breathing became ragged. Fighting off the tears, he said, "I screwed up!"

"How did you screw up?"

"I screwed up and Con got hurt because of it!"

"I don't understand?"

I sat in disbelief as Ryan told me the whole story about the night Con was beaten up.

Ryan looked up at me and said, "…so that's what really happened. You hate me, don't you?"

I took a deep breath and said, "Ryan, I don't hate you! To be honest I'm not very happy with either one of you! It disappoints me that you both smoked marijuana! Who else besides me knows all of this?"

"John, Con, and the police. Why?"

"Because I think your parents really need to know!"

"But they'll get mad!"

"Ryan, they are going to find out sooner or later and it would be better if they get the news from you and SOON!"

"Yes, Paula."

"I'm going to call your parents and tell them that we all need to talk."

I spoke with Ryan's mother and told her that I'd be over. I also paged John. So much for working today! "Hello?"

"It’s me!"

"Oh, hi, Paula!"

"John…Ryan just told me everything that happened. When were you going to fill me in?"

"I-I was going to tell you yesterday but after speaking with Ryan I was overwhelmed with admissions."

"John, you should have called me!"

"I'm sorry, Paula!"

"Meet me over at Ryan's home, we need to talk about what happened!"

"Yes, Paula, I'll be over in a few minutes!"

I walked Ryan back to Con's room. "Hi, Con. I'm going to take Ryan home. Andrea, you can keep your brother company while we're gone."

Andrea could see the seriousness on my face and tone of voice and said, "Okay, Mom!"

Con looked at Ryan and said, "You told her, didn't you?"

"Ahem, yes, and I'm glad he did! When were you going to tell me?"

"Today!"

"I want you to rest. I'm going to take Ryan home! We’ll talk about this later!"

Con blurted out, "You can't keep us apart!"

"Is that what you're afraid of…that I won't allow you to see him…is that why you didn't tell me the whole story?"

"Yes!"

"Con, I have no intentions of keeping you two apart!"

Laughing in a smug sort of way, I went on to say, "Yeah…after what you two did, I’d have to say you two are a match made in heaven! Which is where you both may SOON be if you don't stop abusing drugs!"

Con closed his and laid back in the bed, looking relieved. "Sorry, Mom!"

Taking a deep breath, I said, "I thought I warned you of the dangers of drug abuse? How long have you been doing drugs?"

Looking remorseful, he said, "Just that one time."

"Are you going to use them again?"

"No! I learned my lesson!"

"GOOD! Come on, Ryan, let's go! Your parents are waiting for us!"

We drove to Ryan's house. "Hi, Sarah!"

"How's Con doing?"

"He's fine. I'm sure he'll be getting out of the hospital later today."

"Oh, that's good to hear! John's in the den with Tom."

Sarah looked at Ryan and said, "Sweetie, why don’t you go get cleaned up!"

"Yes, Mom!"

Sarah studied Ryan as he turned to go upstairs to shower. When he was out of earshot she turned to me, "What’s wrong?"

"I think it’s best if Ryan tells you!"

"Oh dear! Let’s go into the den!"

After some idle chatter and sipping on coffee, Ryan returned. His dark hair was still wet but neatly combed. We all stopped talking and focused on him.

Sarah put her coffee down and said, "I know that this is more than just a social visit, so now that Ryan is here we should talk about why you and John are really here?"

Before I could say anything, Ryan said, "Umm, Mom…Dad?"

Everyone focused on Ryan again and he said, "Mom…Dad, I have to tell you something about the night that Con was injured."

Ryan told them everything that he told me. Every so often I noticed John staring at me as if gauging my reaction. I was determined not show any emotion and sat back to relax in my chair.

Ryan finished up by saying, "So that’s what really happened."

Sarah and Tom looked shocked at what they had just heard. Tom finally said, "You and your brother are in big trouble! Not only are you in trouble with us but you’re in trouble with the law!"

Tom looked at John and me, "What are we going to do?"

John told us what the police said about what the outcome may be…that they would probably go to juvenile court and would probably be required to go through a drug rehab program.

Looking as if she was about to cry, Sarah said, "We are so sorry for what happened! It’s obvious that we have not been keeping a close enough eye on our boys! We try to give them as much freedom and independence as we can but sometimes it just backfires."

"We understand, don’t we, John!"

John sat up in his chair and said, "Um…yes, we have two teens of our own!"

I said, "Yes, and I think when this is all behind them they will have learned a very valuable lesson!"

Sarah said, "Ryan, please go to your room, we need to discuss some things."

Ryan looked pleadingly at his parents and said, "Mom…Dad, please don’t forbid me to see Con! We’ve learned our lesson! We won’t do drugs ever again!"

"Of course not, dear, we know that you love each other very much! Now go to your room!"

"Yes, Mom!"

When Ryan was gone, Sarah said, "Ryan does bring up a valid point for discussion. It was your son that was seriously injured! I guess we need to know if Ryan will be welcome to visit Con?"

John and I looked at each other. We both started speaking at the same time. John said, "You first."

Looking at Sarah and Tom, I shook my head no, "I really do like Ryan. He’s such a sweet boy! My son is just head over heels with him. I don’t know what the point would be in preventing them from seeing each other. How do you feel about it, John?"

"I feel the same way, Paula! Despite their lack of judgment I can’t think of a reason why they shouldn’t see each other. And I agree with you, Tom, we need to keep a closer eye on our boys. They need our guidance!"

Tom sat up and said, "I couldn’t agree with you more, John. They’re going to make mistakes, let’s not make their lives any more difficult than they already are! I think we all remember how challenging our teen years were!"

"I for one am happy that this is out in the open! I’m sure that we’ll need to get back together for more discussion. We should probably think about getting our sons a lawyer to represent them."

Tom said that he knew a couple of good lawyers that could represent our boys and said that if it was okay with us, he would contact them.

"Well, I’m happy that we got together! I’m going to head back to the hospital. I need to talk to Con’s doctor."

"Thanks for bringing Ryan home, Paula, and for taking the time to talk to us! Hopefully between the four of us we’ll get our boys through their teen years!"

John and I walked to our cars. John said, "Paula, you were great in there!"

"Thanks! Did you find a place to live yet?"

"No, but I won’t be coming back home. Here’s my key to the house."

I could feel my throat tighten as I fought off the tears. I guess in the back of my mind I thought he’d have a change of heart. "No, you keep the key! Stop over anytime you like. Don’t be a stranger! The kids need to see you! I think Andrea’s having a tough time with this!"

"I’ll have to spend some time with her! When’s her next soccer game?"

"Tomorrow!"

John said, "I really hope that we can continue to be friends? It’ll be a lot easier for the kids!"

"I suppose you’re right! See ya around!"

Looking sad, John said, "See ya around! Call me if you need anything! I’ll let ya know when I find a place!"

I don’t understand why he looks sad! He’s the one that wanted to break up! I got into the car and waved goodbye. Just as I was about to back up, Ryan came storming out the front door and ran up to my car. "Can I come along?"

"Sure, if it’s okay with Sarah?"

"She said it’s fine!" I could see Sarah waving at me and I waved back.

"Okay, get in!"

Ryan said, "My parents are going to have a meeting tonight with me and my brother when he’s off from work."

"I’m happy to hear that, Ryan."

"My brother is going to be very angry with me!"

"Ryan, if it’s any consolation…he might be angry with you now, but later in life he’ll probably thank you! Drug abuse can ruin your life!"

I glanced over at Ryan who was looking at me, grinning ear to ear, obviously relieved. "I’m the luckiest guy in the world!"

Laughing, I said, "Why?"

"For having such a supportive, understanding, loving boyfriend, you, John, and my parents!"

Smiling and glancing over at Ryan, I said, "You are so right and don’t ever forget that!"
