James asked, sitting at his desk as he looked intently upon the face of his sire on the screen. "Well, Matthew will work for the Council, much like he did previously for you," Pedro said. "What is THAT supposed to mean?" James asked, getting annoyed with Pedro's vague description. "DON'T get pissy with me!" Pedro stated, making James drop his head slightly, before he continued. "Matthew is still your child; a command from you will have him at your side no matter what. YOU know that!" "Yes, sire. My apologies. I just meant, what do you mean, previously?" James asked, sounding somewhat calmer. "I meant how he answered to your Governors but you could override their orders. It will be similar with this new arrangement: Matthew will answer to you, but an order from the majority of the council will override any order you give. If he is tasked by the council, it will be asked as a request, and Matthew will be free to refuse," Pedro explained. "You KNOW he wouldn't refuse the Consuls that would ask him," James said. "I know, James... That's why I only discussed these terms with that small group; we all agreed that we have enough of our own people without having to borrow any of yours," Pedro said, smiling. "Who's in this small group?" James asked feeling relieved. "Myself, of course, as well as Musa, Americ and Sebastian; I thought you might appreciate only family knowing of this arrangement," Pedro said. "Thank you," James said smiling, then in a more serious tone continued, "If the others knew of Matthew's other training they might want to exploit him." "What other training? Why would they want to exploit him?" Pedro asked. "I was contacted early yesterday by someone calling himself Elder; he said he's the leader of an Aboriginal Tribe, that he harboured Matthew for the decade that he vanished. Elder also told me that he personally trained Matthew. In what, I don't know yet. He didn't go into detail... He also expressed an interest in his Tribes joining the council," James explained. "I can't really say anything about Matthew being exploited without knowing the extent of his training, but if this Elder trained a vampire it must be something more than how to fight. If he wants to discuss joining the Council, there must be some supernatural element to these tribes... Perhaps something like witch doctors," Pedro said thinking aloud. "Perhaps," James said. Continuing he added, "Whatever it is, I'll find out in a few days. He's coming here to meet me and discuss things." "That could be interesting," Pedro said trailing off. --- The young man stood in the doorway to Victoria's office, terrified that she wouldn't like what he was about to tell her. Yet he proceeded to speak regardless, "Excuse me, ma'am." "What?" Victoria asked, not bothering to look up from what she was reading. "I've found something on Jackson's whereabouts," he said. "Yes?" she asked in a tone of annoyance as her head tilted up to gaze upon the man still standing in the doorway. "Jackson was observed leaving his property in a black van with his aide and several armed men," he told her. "Do you know where he went?" Victoria asked. "No ma'am," he said sounding nervous. "WELL THEN WHAT BLOODY GOOD ARE YOU?" Victoria yelled angrily as she stood up from her chair. "I KNOW WHERE THE VAN IS!" he yelled in fear as Victoria stormed towards him. She stopped, her hand inches from the man's throat; she stepped back and straightened her self up then smiled, terrifying the man. "Go on," she said as she moved to the edge of her desk and sat gingerly upon it. "I've tracked the van to a Shadow Council owned warehouse... There's no sign of Jackson or his men there either," he said. "Is that all?" Victoria asked. "No ma'am. The warehouse is one of several owned by Consul James Larson," he said. A wide smile burst onto Victoria's face as she stood from her perch on the edge of the desk. "Ah Jimmy, what have you been up to?" she asked as she walked around her office. "What are you going to do, ma'am?" the young man asked. "I'm going to pay the good Consul a visit," Victoria said as she took a beautiful rapier off of its mounting on the wall. "Ma'am?" the man asked, slightly confused. "Just a precaution. You never know what old vamps like James are up to. I'm going to drive down there and get to the bottom of this!" Victoria said, walking out her office door, attaching the sword to her belt as she went. --- Shortly after finishing his breakfast, Bill slipped out to the basement. He stood in the dark corridor just outside the cell block, easily remembering where Tyson had pressed the wall to access the hidden keypad; he then typed in the code to open the door. "Ah the advantages of a photographic memory," he muttered as the door slowly opened and he stepped into the cell block. He walked to the pedestal in the center of the room and stopped, his left hand hovering over the keypad to release the locks on the door to Leon's cell, his right hand on the handle of the Wakizashi Matthew had given him that he had picked up before coming down to the dungeon. 'What are you going to do Bill, kill him?' he heard in his head. "He's caused so much pain for my son and Matthew," Bill said quietly. 'But what are you going to do?' Bill was again asked. "I don't know," he muttered, bringing his left hand back to his side. 'Bill, you're not the only angry father here; meet me in the shooting gallery and we'll talk,' James projected to him. "Where's the," Bill started to ask as the directions to the shooting gallery appeared in his mind. "Ah," he added as he walked off out of the holding area, locking it up as he went. Bill walked down the corridor, further from the holding cells back towards the stairs up to the main house. About half way he stopped and turned down another corridor, continuing on for a little while longer. Bill stopped. Before him were three doorways, one on either side of the corridor, and the last at the end of the hall. Bill continued towards the third doorway, already knowing it was the shooting gallery. Bill entered the gallery to find long room; in front of him was a field of adjustable targets, behind him on the same wall as the door was a case displaying a range of firearms, from small pistols to large rifles, with examples of several types of firearm present. Further along the wall was another door labelled 'ARMOURY.' Bill was just about to head to the room when James stopped him. "Bill, we haven't really had a chance to talk," James said. "What about?" Bill asked, sounding a little annoyed. "A few things really, like how you're coping having two sons with supernatural abilities, or maybe the matter of Alex going to see someone you wished you could've used that blade on years ago?" James asked. Bill looked down at the sword on his belt, finding his left hand resting on its hilt, then looked back up to meet James gaze. "What would you have done?" Bill asked quietly. James stepped forward and placed his hand on Bill's shoulder in a sympathetic gesture before saying, "I would've torn the bastard's heart out!" "Really?" Bill asked, amazed at James's openness about killing someone. "Yes. You Bill, of all people, understand how much restraint it takes not to take that step. After I found out about Leon's betrayal, I questioned him in your living room. Thanks to the memories that Alex transferred to me from Jack, I already knew what Leon had done, the information he had given the thylacines and how he tried to have Matthew murdered. The little prick lied and tried to deny it all! Try restraining yourself when you have his throat in your hand," James said. "But you did restrain your self... Why?" Bill asked. "Because Leon had something I needed to clear Matthew's name! I needed him alive... or at least I did," James said, smirking slightly. "What's changed?" Bill asked. "With help from Tommy, I now have what Leon thought was well hidden. I no longer need him," James said. "So why then did you stop me?" Bill asked, annoyed. "Because, my friend," James started as he led Bill towards the door back out to the corridor, "you're too good a man. Besides that, Leon tried to kill my child. If anyone is going to make him feel any kind of suffering, it's going to be me," James finished, then raised his free hand in the air in front of him. For a split second there was a bright flash then the lights returned to normal. "What spell was that?" Bill asked. "A powerful electrical spell... You don't get turned by the brother of one of the most powerful wizards in the world and not learn a few things; Leon is about to know how it feels to sit in the electric chair," James said with a sadistic grin. "Well, maybe you could teach me sometime?" Bill asked, only half joking. "Of course... Now, how about we go and discuss your working for me, Lieutenant," James smiled. "Lieutenant? I haven't been called that since I was in the army... I was only a First Lieutenant," Bill said, surprised. "Oh I know! First Lieutenant William 'Wild Bill' Davies... I know all about your classified service record. Why do you think I had you transferred? All this trouble with Leon and the Thylacine Council didn't end with Jackson. I have a file up stairs that names the rest of the corrupt Councillors," James explained as he and Bill strolled down the corridor leading from the shooting gallery. Stopping at the intersecting corridor, James turned to Bill and said, "Bill, I need loyal people. There's going to be a fight coming from the Thylacine Councillors that won't want to go to prison. They're not the type to disappear quietly in to the night." "And you want my help bringing them in?" Bill asked. "Yes," James said flatly. Bill thought a moment before replying, "You know my missions didn't involve bringing in creatures ... not living ones anyway?" "Yes, I know! That's why I'm asking for your help; of course I'm not asking you to work for nothing," James replied with a smirk. "Ok, then... I do have my family to consider. Alright, I'll be your bounty hunter, just one thing," Bill said. "What?" James asked. "If they try to get anywhere near my family again, not even you would be able to stop me. I'll kill them all," Bill said without blinking. "Bill, if they come anywhere near OUR family again, I'LL help you," James replied, patting Bill on the shoulder then turned in the direction of the holding cells. Smirking, he asked, "Do you hear that?" --- Lying on the small cot in his cell, Leon thought he had heard someone enter the room outside, but no one came into his cell so he went back to his own thoughts. Thinking about all the mistakes he had made in believing the thylacines and trying to deceive the Consul, he wondered, "Maybe if I give him the files and help catch the councillors he would forgive me and allow me to return to work?" "I really did fuck up though, how could I miss that Marcos was sired by the Consul? Why didn't I look into his past?" Leon lay there questioning him self until suddenly there was a flash and his whole body stiffened, all of his muscles contracting simultaneously. He felt like there was an electric current running from his head along his whole body to his feet, his jaw clenched tight and his arms and legs straightened. Leon's back arched as the searing pain continued to course through his body. He couldn't breathe, let alone scream. Just as he felt like he might pass out, the current stopped and his pained muscles relaxed. Leon lay motionless on the cot, groaning loudly from the pain. As his senses slowly returned to normal, he could feel the heat in his limbs, his skin almost to the point of frying on his body; he could even smell that his clothes had started to singe. Leon continued to lie on his cot groaning as his body slowly recovered from being electrocuted. No one came to check in on him at all, and he assumed it was the consul punishing him for his betrayal. "That answers that then," Leon mumbled before passing out, the pain beginning to ease. --- Marie and Jack sat in the kitchen at the table, each nursing a cup of tea. Everyone else had gone off to take care of their own business after Matthew and Alex left. Tyson had gone up to his office to do some work, meaning he had some potion or experiment that was about to explode if he didn't go take care of it, so he left them to talk. "Are you feeling any better this morning dear?" Marie asked, genuinely concerned about the man. Looking at Marie then down into his cup, Jack responded softly, "Honestly, no." "You will. You have a lot to take in: the attack on you, your son, and your history. I would imagine that Sirus did something to your memory so you couldn't even remember who attacked you," Marie said, trying to comfort the man as he looked to be on the verge of crying. "You're probably right, but it doesn't change what I've done to so many people. How do I even begin to atone for that?" Jack asked. "I would dare say that most of those families are long since dead and buried. It just so happened that Matthew was a survivor, and eventually was turned, against his will, much like you. Jack, you have been given a fresh start! Make the most of it," Marie said smiling warmly. "How do I do that? Every time I look at Matthew, I feel guilt and remorse for atrocities I don't remember committing. And the way he looks at me! He puts on a kind smile around me, and he said all those nice things to comfort me back at your house, but he doesn't want me around. I can see it in his eyes. He would rather have killed me," Jack said as tears rolled down his face. Once again taking Jack's hands comfortingly, Marie said, "Look, don't concern yourself with Matthew! He may feel that way, but he knows you're not the same person. It's just going to take him some time too. But sooner or later he'll come round." "I hope so... I would like to be able to call him a friend some day," Jack said forcing a smile. "Listen to me dear! If you want someone to learn how to be a good person from, look at my son... He could very well have killed you yesterday but didn't; instead he helped you and gave you a second chance. And right now he is on the way to see someone that attacked him twelve years ago," Marie said. "He is such a strong person, a credit to you and his father," Jack said. "Thank you," Marie said, replying to the compliment. "If you ever need to talk about anything Jack, you're welcome to come to me, though I'm sure Tyson would be happy to help you too," she added. "He's being so good to me, and all I do is cry and sob about what I'm going through," Jack said. "That's what good friends do, Jack," Tyson said, smiling from the doorway. "How long have you been there?" Jack asked, blushing slightly. "Long enough... You don't have to worry Jack; we all care in some way, even Matthew," Tyson said, trying to comfort Jack. "Thank you, both," Jack said, genuinely smiling. --- Meanwhile a big black coupe roared down the highway heading towards Parklea; Alex sat in the passenger seat looking out the window. He wondered what he would do when he finally came face to face with his attacker. "Don't think about it, love! You'll only stress your self! I'll be there with you, so he can't hurt you," Matthew said, trying to comfort Alex. "I can't help but think about it; it's almost all I have thought about since you helped me remember what happened. Do you think I could see him on my own for a few minutes when we're there?" Alex asked. "I'm not comfortable with the idea, but he couldn't possibly over-power you now so I guess you could... But I will be just outside the room the whole time," Matthew replied, sounding concerned. "Okay, thank you," Alex said as he turned toward Matthew, giving him an uneasy smile. Matthew took his left hand off of the steering wheel and rested it on Alex's leg, gently squeezing his thigh. "I want to make sure that you get what ever you need to help you move past what he did to you, so you can put it behind you. Whatever I can do to help you do that I will," Matthew said, being supportive. "How long until we get there?" Alex asked as he put his hand on Matthew's. "About an hour at our current speed," Matthew replied as they continued along the highway. "Do you think you could go a little faster?" Alex asked. "Sure," Matthew replied as he put his foot down. "Thanks, I want to get this over with as soon as possible," Alex said turning back to the window. --- Meanwhile, Calvin stood on the mat in the middle of the multipurpose training room used primarily for edged weapons and hand to hand combat training. There were racks along one wall with several different types of bladed weapons, swords, knives and daggers, some recognisable, other obviously custom made. The opposing wall had a range of normal gym equipment waiting to be used, and a few custom pieces of equipment obviously made to be used by something a lot stronger than a human. After visiting Leon, Calvin needed to work off a little tension, so he came to work through a few martial arts techniques. He wore as little as possible when working out alone to allow more freedom of movement. Calvin moved slowly, his arms moving from side to side as he breathed in and out, slowly working through each technique. He would twist his body around in almost impossible positions, like he was performing for an audience but in slow motion, and indeed he was, for at the door to the room stood an awed Tommy, unable to take his eyes off of Calvin's almost nude form. "Would you like some company?" Tommy asked softly, still following Calvin's movements. Calvin was so lost in what he was doing that he didn't respond to Tommy's question, so when Tommy called his name he was startled. "Tommy! How long have you been there?" he asked. "Not very long. Everyone's just finished breakfast and I was wondering where you were," Tommy said. "Well you found me. I went to see Leon. He's a mess, but he's brought that upon himself. Then I came here to blow of some steam, and I must have lost track of time. It's really relaxing! You should try it," Calvin smiled. "Show me what to do?" Tommy asked as he started taking off his clothes. "Alright, but you don't need to strip... I practice like this because I find it more comfortable and easier to move, you don't need to," Calvin said. "Okay," Tommy said, leaving his pants on after taking his shirt off. "Now, do as I do," Calvin said as he took a defensive posture, Tommy following him exactly. They began to move together, perfectly timed, moving as one. Calvin slowly worked through moves that would have been used to disarm an opponent in battle. Calvin's arms stretched out in front of him then he brought them back to his side, twisting his body to the side as if he were pulling someone towards him, or dodging a lunge from a sword; Tommy followed, mimicking Calvin precisely. Calvin moved to changed direction but stumbled and fell back; Tommy quickly moved to catch his mate just before he hit the ground. "Calvin, you're preoccupied... What's wrong?" Tommy asked. "Thanks Tommy, but you didn't need to catch me," Calvin said softly as Tommy helped him stand. "I'm your partner! Aren't I supposed to be here for you?" Tommy asked. "Yes, but that's not what I meant! I'm a vampire! A fall like that wouldn't hurt me, and we are standing on a padded mat," Calvin said with a slight chuckle. "And THAT'S not what I meant, silly! I'm here for you in what ever way I can be. Now tell me what's wrong?" Tommy said, giving Calvin a serious look then sitting down on the mat, crossing his legs. Raising an eyebrow at Tommy, Calvin said, "You're not going to let this go, are you?" Tommy just shook his head and continued to stare at Calvin intently. "Okay, then," Calvin said as he sat on the mat in front of Tommy before he continued. "I've been thinking about Leon. He and I never were very close but I always considered him a friend, but after all this I just don't know how to feel! I should be angry at his betrayal, and I am, but I can't help but feel sorry for him. You know right now he's in that cell crying? I realise that trying to kill a council operative is pretty serious, but Leon's scared to death," he said. "You don't know then? Leon didn't just try to kill an operative! Matthew was sired by James; Leon tried to have his child murdered! How would you feel?" Tommy asked. "Shit!" Calvin exclaimed. "I had no idea! No one ever said anything," he added. "Matthew didn't know until last night. I guessed, but James confirmed it for me a little while ago... Oh shit! I told James I wouldn't say anything," Tommy said. "Don't worry, I won't mention it to anyone... And I understand now why Leon is so scared; if I had done what he has, then found out about Matthew's connection to James, I too would be afraid for my life," Calvin said. "Is James really that threatening?" Tommy asked. "Oh yes, if not more so! I haven't really seen him that angry, but not long after I met him he told me that if I ever betrayed him, he'd tear my heart out with his bare hands! It might not sound like much now, but then? And the way he said it, I was terrified! I guess you had to be there," Calvin laughed. "I guess so, but he didn't seem that bad to me... He was nice! We talked about my mum and my family, and how he was the one watching them from the time Matthew was turned. James even showed me a photo of my mum when she was about my age," Tommy said smiling. "James really likes you... He's never really talked to any of us like that. I mean, yeah, he talks to us about missions or things that are going on, but none of us here knows much about James past," Calvin said. "Well, that really does explain Leon, he didn't know about any of it; if he had he might not have gone through with it," Tommy said thinking aloud. "Maybe, but it still doesn't excuse what he's done. Matthew is my best friend and your cousin. He's family, and Leon tried to have him killed. I think it best I stay away from the cell block from now on," Calvin said dangerously. "Why's that?" Tommy asked. "If I go see him again, I'll kill him," Calvin said flatly. ******************************** I'd like to thank everyone who takes the time to read my story and wait paitently for the new chapters.
