BlAcK oCtObEr ChApTeR oNe ThE LiFe StAr ____________________________________ "Do you have any idea how unacceptable your behavior today was?!" Evan paced angrily back and fourth in the study fidgeting with the gold chain around his neck.. "Just because you're the headmaster's brother does not mean you can get away with turning Madam Lynn's cat blue!" he said pointing to a blueberry colored tabby sleeping by the fireplace. A small smile tugged on the corners of Rhett's mouth as he sat at a table in the far corner of the study. " You think it's funny?!" Evan snapped as he stopped pacing and turned to look at the black haired teenager. "Oh come on, if you weren't so uptight you'd think it was funny just like everyone on campus does." he answered looking up at Evan and flashing an enigmatic smile. Evan stared at the teenager in shock. "As head of the department of discipline it is my job to make sure people like you don't take away the other students right to learn. If I had it my way I would have had you expelled the moment you stepped foot in my office the first time!" Evan shouted, his eyes turning dark with anger. This only made Rhett's smile widen, "Yes, I am sure you would have. Unfortunately, my brother has to approve before you can expel anyone. And we both know he'd never kick me out of the school." Evan clenched his fists tightly. "He's too soft on you. But you know what Rhett? I see right through you. You're the type who gives our kind a bad name!" "Oh, here we go again." Rhett answered rolling his eyes. Just then a loud beeping sound filled the air. "What the hell is that?" Evan asked looking at the teenager and crossing his arms over his chest. "My phone." Rhett replied, reaching for his back pocket and pulling out his cell phone.. "Don't you dare - " But before he could finish his sentence Rhett flipped his phone opened and held it up to his ear. "Yeah? Oh hey." "Get off that phone right now." Evan shouted looking at Rhett in disbelief. The dark haired teenager held up his index finger to silence Evan. "Mmhmm... I understand. I know.... Don't worry it won't happen again." "Give me that!" Evan said angrily taking the phone out of Rhett's hand and shaking his head disapprovingly before putting the phone to his own ear. " Listen whoever you are, I'm sure you have better things to do with your life than call this little misfit pain in the ass." Rhett smiled and leaned back in his seat listening to Evan tell the person on the phone off. "Now, if you don' t mind I have to - Oh... Headmaster Gabriel. I-I didn't know it was you." he said nervously. "Y-yes sir. I'm sorry. Okay. Goodbye sir." "Next time you'll learn not to take my phone from me." Rhett said holding out his left hand. The blonde haired man shot a dirty look at the teenager and slowly handed his back the phone., "You little shit, I could have gotten fired for that little scheme you just pulled." "Hey that's your fault, not mine." Rhett answered crossing his arms over his chest. Evan tightened his fists again. "err.... You're excused. But we're not finished here, you hear me?" Rhett rose to his feet and couldn't help but smile. "whatever." he said tossing his messenger bag over one shoulder and walking out of Evan's office. ____________________________________ "You are unbelievable, you know that?" Jaelyn said sitting down on the chair across from Rhett and laughing. "I cannot believe he was stupid enough to fall for something like that." Rhett laid back on the couch and stretched his arms. "Ah, I know. While he was going on about me being a disgrace to our kind I accidentally called my brother, who in return called me back and the stupid ass thought I was talking to a friend or something." "If you keep this up Rhett they're going to expel you." she said tucking back her long strawberry blonde hair behind her right ear. "Nah, I highly doubt it. I mean yes, occasionally I'll do something that gets me in trouble. But that's because I'm bored. I know all the material we're learning. I get good grades. I mean, none of the stuff I do is too obvious to give away what I am. I mean, for all Madam Lynn knows, I dyed her cat blue." "But you didn't." Jaelyn giggled. "No I didn't. But I mean, Gabriel won't let me test my powers. I want to know what I'm capable of but according to him that's to risky. Well... Fuck risks. " Jaelyn stood up as well and walked over to Rhett. "Listen Cuz, I know how frustrating not knowing your full capability is, believe me, I was seventeen once. But trust me, what Gabriel is doing is for your own good." she said soothingly. "But don't worry, the big night is only a few weeks go. Then you're on your own." "Yeah I guess so." Rhett said forcing a smile as he took her hand. "You know, sometimes I think you're the only one who gets me Jae." The older woman smiled as she wrapped her arms around her cousin. "That's because I'm such an awesome and understanding person." she said giving Rhett a kiss on the cheek. "Eww..." Rhett exclaimed wiping his cheek. "Don't kiss me, that's disgusting. " he said wincing. Jaelyn walked back over to the couch a sat down. "So, what are you waiting for your big one, eight?" she asked twirling a strand of hair between her fingers. "I dunno. Clothes." He answered looking out the window at the students walking towards the dorms. "No! Really? I thought you were going naked." Jaelyn said jokingly as she gave her cousin a smile. Rhett rolled his eyes. "Well... Gabriel and I are suppose to have a long talk in about ten minutes. Of course in his language that means twenty minutes tops." "That's for sure. He can't give long lectures. He doesn't have it in him I guess." Jaelyn said with a smile. "Well, wish me luck." "G' Luck." ____________________________________ Gabriel's office was dimly lit by a few candles on the desk and above the fire place. Soft music was playing softly by an invisible pianist on the oak piano beside the large bay window. Rhett sat down in one of the arm chairs across from his father's desk and leaned back listening to the sound of the slow music. A moment later, the door on the far side of the room opened and a tall man wearing a dark purple silk shirt and black pants walked into the office. "Gabe." Rhett said acknowledging his brother's presence. "Oh, you're here already Rhett, I was about to have Lena call for you." he said taking his seat behind the desk and crossing his arms. "So, what was the whole situation with you and Madam Lynn's cat? You made him green?" "Blue." Rhett said softly under his breath. "Ah, Blue." Gabriel said looking down at a black folder with Rhett's name on the side tab. "You know your rebelliousness is going to expose us if you continue pulling stuff like this." he said looking at his brother through his thin silver glasses. "Gabe, it's little stuff. Stuff no one will ever suspect - " "Someone who knows what to look for would notice. You put us all at risk." Gabriel said coldly as he brushed a strand of his black hair away from his face.. "We cannot risk exposure Rhett. Do you understand that? "Yes, sir." Rhett answered lowering his head. "Three weeks from Saturday is the black festival, it also happens to be your eighteenth birthday; I do not want to have to strip you of your powers that night, do you hear me?" "Yes." "Good. Now, I hope you understand Rhett, that when it comes to our kind, we are superior. You are a full blooded vampire. We are not that common anymore." he said rising to his feet. "Mother and father were full blood, and that makes it a lot easier on us. We have more right then vampires who are half or less. Ancient vampire blood runs through our veins. You have to be more responsible about what you do for now on. Especially after the black festival." Gabriel said sitting on the corner of his desk. "I don't mean to be harsh on you Rhett. But I only have your best interest in mind, that's all." He leaned over and opened the top drawer of the desk and pulled out a small black velvet box. "I know it's a bit early, but I figured I should give you this early." Gabriel opened the box and pulled out a silver necklace with a six-sided star pedant on it. In the center of the star was a small black crystal. "Wear this at all time." he said placing the pedant in his brother's hand. "That crystal will allow you to be out in the day light once you officially become a vampire. You know what happens without it." Rhett nodded his head and put the necklace around his neck. "Thank you Gabriel." "I promised father when he died I would look after you. I'm only doing what I promised him." Gabriel answered. "You're excused." Rhett stood up and walked out of his brother's office and back up to his dorm. ____________________________________ The moonlight sit the lake below the boy's dorm building making it almost look like glass. Rhett sat on the window seal starring up at the window fidgeting with the pedant Gabriel had given him. In just a few weeks his life would change forever. ____________________________________ "What in the name of Lucifer are you doing?" Chastity asked crossing her arms over her chest as she walked into her brother's room and flicked on the bedroom light. "Do you fucking mind, Chastity?" the dark haired young man asked as he stood up. "Not until I get an answer, Zero." Chastity said with a smile that exposed her fangs. He rolled his eyes and stepped away to reveal a young man lying half naked in his bed, blood slowly pouring out of two small holes in the side of his neck. "There, happy?" Chastity walked over to the lifeless body on her brother's bed. "Cute kid, where'd you find this one?" she asked as her brother walked over to the full length mirror and wiped the blood off of his exposed chest. "Who cares?" he answered pulling on a clean white shirt. Chastity gently caressed the lifeless boy's cheek. " I think you broke him, Hun." she said standing up and walking over to Zero. "Nah, you think?" She smiled and reached for a drop of blood on the side of his mouth. "you missed a spot." she answered smiling as she licked the drop from her finger. "Is there a reason why you chose to disturb me?" he asked agitatedly as he pulled his shoulder length black hair into a ponytail. "What does it matter? You were finished with him anyways." Chastity said tilting her head towards his bed. "Yeah, but what if I wasn't?" "I figured you were." She answered watching her brother try to fix his black tie. "Here, give me that." she said yanking it out of his hands and tying it for him. "Are you going to answer my question?" he asked getting impatient. "What do you want?" Zero snapped. "What? Can't a girl come and have a nice little conversation with her little brother?" Chastity asked sweetly. "No." Zero answered as he looked at himself in the mirror. His piercing dark blue eyes stood out from under the few lose strands of hair. "You know, you're the only guy I've ever talked to who didn't find everything I say completely interesting." she said sitting on the corner of Zero's bed and taking off her shoes. Zero rolled his eyes and tucked in his shirt. "That's because half the time you have them under some kind of trance. And second because I'm your brother. I don't see you in that way and if I did, that would be incest and that would be wrong." She smiled softly. "You know, you really should wear your hair like that more often, it really brings out your eyes." "I could care less about my eyes." Chastity's smile widened. "What crawled up your ass and died?" "Nothing. You're just annoying me." He said as he leaned up against the dresser. "Well... I'm going out again. Will you do me a favor and get rid of him for me?" Chastity glanced over at the boy next to her. "Yeah don't worry, he'll be gone when you get back." she said as she started running her fingers through his hair. Zero raised an eye brow before leaving the room. "God, there is definitely something wrong with that guy." e-mail --- _tearsdry66@aol.com_ (mailto:tearsdry66@aol.com) Web site - _http://beautiful.tragedy.66.tripod.com/_ (http://beautiful.tragedy.66.tripod.com/)
