Chapter Six

Michael was up several times during the night, throwing up the spoiled fish. Since the lights came on every time one of us moved that meant neither of us got much sleep last night. I asked our constant monitor if they had anything for Michael's stomach. The disembodied voice said it was better for him to purge it, that his digestive system probably knew best. Little comfort to Michael who was sick as a dog (no pun intended), nor to me who was worried for him. Around three in the morning, by my best estimate, he was finally down to pure clear bile. The door buzzed and a very fatigued-looking Niko delivered one of those drinks that replaces one's electrolytes. Michael sipped on it for a while, then passed out. I took the bottle from his hands and screwed the cap back on it so it wouldn't spill and sat it on the night table next to him, then settled in for my approximately three hours of sleep.

When the lights came on promptly at six, I checked on Michael. He was still looking a little green. I told the surveillance camera I didn't think Michael would be able to work today.

"Do you think you remember the route to your workstation?" came the voice of Sebastian.

"Yes, it's a pretty simple path" I replied.

"Just let us know when you're ready and we'll test your trustworthiness" Sebastian quipped.

I helped Michael to the bathroom and washed him off, making sure to clean all the places the vomit had clung to his fur. I dried us both and tucked him back into bed. I pulled my clothes on and slipped into my shoes, walked to the door and said "I'm ready." The door buzzed and I began my trek to the work pods area. Vasily was awaiting me on his closed-circuit screen.

"I heard Michael was sick, I hope he is better" Vas said.

"Just some bad fish" I replied "he should be better this afternoon."

"Good, good. Take a look at this" he said, sending me pages of work to go over. Once again, as I had yesterday, I became fixated on the pages; the time flew by.

"Henry! You're late for lunch" Vasily said. I looked at the clock on the computer for the first time today. 12:20.

"So I am. I guess I'll continue this tomorrow. Have a good day."

I wasn't sure what to do, as nobody had given me any concrete instructions, so I headed toward the dining area. When I arrived, my food was ready for me so I assumed I was being allowed to escort myself today. Today's fare was Irish stew with fresh baked bread; quite tasty, actually. I was about halfway through the large bowl when Sebastian walked in and sat across from me. He slid a key across the table to me.

"Niko had the salmon, as well, so you're on your own today" he said, "don't worry about any temptation you may have, the key will only allow you access to Levels 20 and 30."

"How magnanimous of you" I said very dryly, while chewing a piece of beef from the stew.

"Update on Michael. I sent the doctor in when you left to give him meds for his stomach. He, Niko and several others who had the salmon turned up a little worse for the wear, but they should be back on their feet tomorrow."

"Thank you for letting me know" I said.

"If you're done eating, I'd like you to come with me. I've let Gregor know you'll be a few minutes late" he said.

We went out of the dining area and continued farther down that same hall until Sebastian stopped at a door marked 3060. The door buzzed and Sebastian turned the handle and went in beckoning me to follow. This room was a replica of the one Michael and I shared, but lacking the private bathroom. Sitting at the terminal was yet another chimera. He appeared to be based on a Eurasian wolf, black, gray and brown. He was quite large; I could tell even with him being seated. Before he saw me, I flashed to him in English, hoping he could understand "act surprised, don't let on I'm communicating with you." He slowly turned around, and when he saw me, he looked alarmed.

"Lukas, darf Ich Henry vorstellen" Sebastian said "Henry, Lukas."

"Hello" I said "do you speak any English?"

"A little" he said "please to meet you."

"Pleased" Sebastian corrected.

"Henry, Lukas here is having a little trouble wrapping his head around his new life. I was hoping to bring Michael in, since records show Michael has some German under his belt. But since he is under the weather, perhaps you can help him."

"I'd be happy to do what I can" I said.

"I'll leave you two alone, I'm afraid Gregor would only release you until 1:30 so you only have about 20 minutes allowing for travel time, I'll be back for you then" Sebastian said.

"How did this happen to you?" I asked Gregor.

"They tell me the automobile iss burning, when rescue comes, I vass near dead, they bringing me here to safe life" he said in heavily accented English.

"Most of what they tell us is lies" I thought to him "do you actually remember any of that?"

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. We all come from tragic circumstances" I say aloud.

"No. I remember nothing" he flicked back to me, then said "Seltsam...how in English you say?...strange...co-ink...ahh..."

"Coincidence? Yes, it does seem so" I said. "What is your job...what do you do?" I thought to him.

To all appearances, we sat silently commiserating. Lukas sent his answer to me "Genetic biologist, military applications, Major Lukas Becker."

The door opened; our time was up.

"Perhaps they will let Michael visit you later, his communication skills will be much better than mine" I say.

"You have helped just by being here" he said.

"Come Henry, you will be late for Gregor" Sebastian said. Sebastian made sure Lukas was secure then shooed me away toward the lift.

Walking into the gym, I was instantly blinded by the cascading light show. Once the lights went back to normal, I saw another chimera on the opposite side of the room from me. He and I were fairly well matched in height and weight from what I could ascertain. I quickly deduced this must be the Spanish one, since I'd already made the acquaintance of Lukas. I further deduced that his trigger must be the same as mine. Not seeing Gregor anywhere around, I introduced myself.
"Hello, I'm Henry Miller" I said.

"Diego Garcia" he replied.

"Te hablé antes" I thought to him.

"Lo sé. Te vi en mi mente" he said he had seen me in his mind. "¿Dónde está el gris?" (where is the gray one?)

"Nosotros no entrenamos juntos" I sent back, telling him we didn't train together. All these thoughts passed back and forth rapidly. This one was sharp as a razor blade.

"So, Diego, have you seen Gregor?" I asked aloud.

"No, we fight each other, no?" he asked.

"Very well, shall we begin?"

"Tres...dos...uno!"

Diego leapt at me more catlike than wolf, as he was in the air, I felt my body adjust and drop into a roll so that when he landed I was positioned behind him. I reached out to grab him and he was gone, quick as a puff of smoke. Christ, he was fast! I surveyed the room for him and almost too late I saw him in my peripheral vision; directly behind me shadowing my every move. In a split second I played out a scene in my mind: I faked a move with my arms while I swept backward with my leg to trip him then fall onto his body pinning him. Satisfied with the mental plan; I let my body unwind; attempting to carry out the planned maneuver. When I set it into motion, I swept back and my leg hit nothing. He was gone again. It was as if he could read my mind. I couldn't land a blow on this chap. I stopped and put my hands up in defeat.

"Side effect of la luz" he thought "I can see the plans you make in your mind."

"Just remember, someone is always watching" I flung back at him.

"Wow!" I said aloud, "either I'm slow and tired today or you're really good!"

"I'm full of energy for some reason" he said back, his eyes sparkling through the shared lie.

"Boys! How rude of you to start without Gregor" Gregor said.

For roughly the next hour and a half we trained at Gregor's behest. Most of what he taught was already included in our `programming' as I called it, for lack of a better word. Gregor said "let me show you one more move before we end for the day."

Diego's face was apprehensive, quickly he flicked to me "Close your eyes tight and roll your eyes back into your head!"

Without thinking, I did as he said. Just as my eyes closed, I saw the white light that comes before the colors. "It's okay now" Diego sent. Somehow, I knew this meant that skills were not limited to the dojo this time.

"Mañana, amigo" Diego said with a wink.

"Indeed" I replied.

I went back to our sleeping quarters to check on Michael. When I walked in, he was listening to a classical music piece.

"What's that?" I asked.

"It's Faure's Pavane" he said. Mentally he said "It's a molecular biology and biochemistry lesson."

"I had no idea you were so cultured" I said. In thought I added "Do they know?"

"No, at least I don't think so" he flicked. "Ahh, yes I have a weakness for the classical music. There's still a lot about me you don't know."

"I see. Dinner time is soon, are you feeling well enough to eat?" I said, as another piece started.

"I think so, he said. Let me stop the Elegie" he said going over to shut off the music player. "Most of Faure is laced with science lessons for those of my anomaly" he thought.

"Ok, we're ready for dinner" I said. The door buzzed and we headed for the dining hall. Today was apparently the day for socializing all the animals; seated at our table were Lukas and Diego. Lukas seemed much calmer.

"You seem to have lost some of your angst" I commented to him "by the way, this is Michael. Michael this is Lukas, and this is Diego."

"I lost my angst after gas forced rape" Lukas thought to me.

"Were you the rapist or the rapee?" I sent back. Diego caught my unguarded thought and smiled, grabbing his crotch.

"My arsch ist very tender right now" Lukas thought "but I ejected buckets while it was in progress. It vass the best sex I have ever had."

"The test is when they are not forcing you with the gas" I sent back to him.

I opened my covered tray to find butter chicken, something I'd not had since I left the curry capital of London. On the side was a glass of stout; seems I hit the jackpot tonight. Michael had a blander selection due to his stomach problems of yesterday; chicken noodle soup with club soda.

"Lukas, tell our friends the talent you discovered today" Diego thought so we all could hear.

"The count has increased" Lukas began "I heard four more pairs."

"That makes an even two hundred of us, 100 coupled pairs" Diego thought. "Lukas has the gift of distance hearing. He says we are scattered across the globe in bases such as this."

"Michael, what we suspected must be true, somebody is engineering a chimera army" I flicked.

"Who, and for what purpose?" Lukas interjected.

The door opened and Sebastian toddled in.

"Gentlemen, enjoying your meals and camaraderie, I assume?" he said.

"Yes, thank you" I said.

"Sebastian, are we allowed to ask questions?" I attempted.

"You may ask anything, I may or may not answer" he said.

"Who is the overseer of GREG?" I asked.

"As I said, I may not answer, and in this matter definitely not" he said, "does it matter?"

"Ilya Rostovich" came Diego's voice in my head.

"No, I guess not" I said.

Lukas' voice in my head said "Ilya Rostovich is head of the Novyy Poryadok, Chelminsk crime syndicate."

"Well, you fellows should be finishing up, your dining period is over in ten minutes" Sebastian said.

We all sat silently pondering what the news of the day meant. Diego let us know he would keep trying to pick up stray thoughts and we would know more tomorrow, he hoped.

It had been an exceptionally long day and though Michael was rested from being in bed all day I had not had that pleasure. I was planning to turn in and just catch up on sleep when the metal scented gas started up again. Even in my exhausted state, my dick went stiff as a board. I was lying on my back, so I stayed put as Michael straddled me and dropped his erect member into my mouth as he swallowed mine to the root. With the boost from the gas, it didn't take long for us to go from zero to mouths full of steaming hot cum. Michael turned around and we combined our loads and swapped the concoction back and forth until we had swallowed it all. The lights faded to black and the ventilation system cleared the gas out. We both fell dead asleep.
