Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 51: Cookies by Tripp Savidge * Scene 1 * "I don't care! Drag them out if you have to!" someone shouted. Skye was vaguely aware that the man sounded familiar and wondered if it was important. He felt Noud lift off him and reached out to grab the elf to keep him in place. He didn't care that River and Mica were in the room; he had been enjoying Noud's attention. "Sexy times are over, Bro. Come on, I need you to at least try to fight it," River said. 'Don't want to,' Mistral grumbled, equally upset that Noud was pulled away. "Why'd you take Noud? He wasn't done, and we don't want to fight it," Skye complained. "Mica, grab his other arm. We can worry about his modesty once we get him clear of these friggin' blossoms," River said. "Garrett, dude, enough already. Corbin, you take Revali. I'm pretty sure you're going to have to carry him." "Not like you to be a buzzkill," Garrett grumbled as he released Revali from his grip. "I think they're slipping under again, Mica. Shit, this stuff is potent," River said, and Skye felt Bram pulled away from beside him. A cloud of flower petals rose up around him. "You okay, River?" Mica asked as he pushed Bram and the siren out of the room. "Yes, but I'm not gonna last long. Storm is starting to protest that it would be easier to join them." "Go! Get out of here, and we can send in someone else. Arnak said Lady Telawynn was sending more guards from the hold." Skye felt Mica's arm wrap around him, his blond hair tickling the side of Skye's face. "Mm, you smell good, Mica." A smack landed on his ass, and Skye squeaked. "Quit," River scolded. "God, I can't believe this, me, choosing not to have sex." "You could change your mind," Skye said, hoping River would give in. "Try to get them to the grand hall for now. That may be far enough." Skye recognized Arnak's voice as they dragged him past. He was with it enough to wonder why the fae king was giving orders. You know, Mistral, Arnak would make a great dragon mate if he weren't already taken. All tall, dark, and broody like Taleel. I miss Taleel. 'We need to reconnect with him once we escape Underhill. Jerrick as well. But did you forget Jhaeros? He's in Underhill too,' Mistral said. Mica and River lowered Skye to the floor next to Garrett, and Skye instinctively cuddled into his mate. River dropped on the floor beside him and took a deep breath before pulling off the scarf around his head. Skye couldn't help but notice every one of his wing was glowing brightly. "Damn," River muttered, leaning his head back against the wall. "Can you scoot over just a little, River?" a new voice asked. Skye looked up to see Master Mage Quanta. "Hey, look into my eyes, Skye. You are practically vibrating with magic, how interesting. Okay, I'm going to try to help dispel the effects of the blossoms. That's the way...oh my...this might feel funny." Quanta's eyes glowed like the dragons, and Skye could feel the magic swell around him before it felt like he was dunked in ice water. "Ack! What?" Skye gasped as he struggled to catch his breath. "Try to breathe regularly. The cold and shock will pass quickly. Give it a minute and take deep breaths in...and out." "Holy shit. Was that necessary?" Skye grumbled and became very aware of being naked. "You'll be fine now. River?" Quanta asked, touching River's cheek to look into his eyes. "Do me." River grunted as the magic swelled again before Quanta moved to Garrett. "Are you feeling better?" Itheral asked as he knelt next to Skye. He extended his hand over Skye and closed his eyes. "Healthy as a centaur." "Yeah, I feel pretty good actually," Skye said as he took inventory of himself and tried to sense if he could identify anything about the magic Quanta mentioned. He felt buzzed like he'd had too much caffeine, but nothing seemed to be wrong. Skye wondered if he could ask for some clothes just as a guard, he didn't know, set a stack of leathers next to his feet. "The delea blossoms are a combination of biology and magic. The effects would wear off eventually, but the mage figured out how to do a quick fix," Itheral said as he moved to check River. "He trying to take your job?" River asked. "A good healer never turns down help." "Wait, is Revali, the siren, okay?" "He is. I already checked him over. Might not have been the treatment I'd have recommended, but it worked. His humours are in much better alignment, and his aura is a nice healthy color. Good work," Itheral said before he also moved on. Shit, Mistral, I should have asked about Bram and Noud. I wonder if Itheral can tell? Is there a noticeable change, or does it take a while? 'It's done now, and I don't regret a moment of it. They wanted us before Underhill interfered, and you have to agree that the sex was so good. Now, they can find the dragon of their dreams.' But we didn't give them a choice. 'We gave them an option and did not take anything away. They can still choose to partner with an elf or whomever else they want. It doesn't have to be a dragon. But, if they do find a dragon, now they can be a true bond-mate.' "Wow, can I say again that having you as my mate has been the best thing that ever happened to me," Garrett said, interrupting Skye and Mistral's internal conversation. "I love you too, but what brought that on?" Skye asked. "I used to worry that I might get bored once I had a bond-mate. But with you, it's like I never know what to expect. Revali was delicious; then you drew two gorgeous elves into our bed. Fuck, I am the luckiest dragon ever!" River snickered, and Skye turned to give his brother his best glare. "The man speaks truth, Bro. Nik's not complaining either. Though I don't quite understand why Underhill did it." "Me neither," Arnak said, walking up to where they were seated. He didn't even hide giving Skye a thorough once over. Skye grabbed the leathers and began pulling them on, trying his best to ignore the stares. He could feel multiple sets of eyes watching him, and their thoughts were distracting, even without the effects of the delea blossoms. He saw that River and the others were also getting dressed. "Any ideas?" River asked. "I was hoping one of you would have an explanation. I may have been gone for a long time, but I'm not unfamiliar with Underhill or the delea grove. Yet, I never heard of Underhill using the blossoms outside of the grove or on a group where it served no apparent purpose. My memory was that it focused on bringing elves together or encouraging the creation of little ones. You and Prince Garrett didn't-" "God, no! I mean no, there are no dragonlings in our near future," Skye turned to Garrett to make sure. "Nope. Though I guess we could have..." Garrett's voice faded as he looked away. Skye knew Garrett was thinking about what it would be like, but he sure wasn't going to share that with the group. "And your guards already seem to be very close but are any...um...together now?" Arnak asked. "Not that I know of." Skye felt a stab of guilt and wondered if he should confess what he'd done or explain his powers. He opened his mind to his wing just to double-check that there were no new relationships. "Strange." Arnak glanced off as if he were thinking. "The brownies are clearing out the rooms and will let us know when it's safe for you and your team to return." Arnak turned and strode off. "Wait. Aren't they affected by the blossoms?" River asked. "Brownies are one of the few fae races who seem to be immune; however, there are some mushrooms that have a similar effect on them and give the rest of us wild hallucinations," Itheral said. "I guess that's good, or it would have taken us forever to get anything done." River poked Skye in the side. **You're going to have to explain your ability to Arnak eventually, 'cause I'm pretty sure his son's going to be one of our wing and likely bonded to a dragon someday.** **We don't know that,** Skye objected. He hadn't touched Jhaeros, so he didn't know for sure. The pull could be...anything. 'Right...' Mistral chided. **Skye, I'm not the only one that felt a pull to the night elf. You may not have gotten close enough for your magic to knock you on your ass, but we both know it's going to happen. And I don't know for sure, but I can't imagine Jhaeros not wanting a dragon mate if he could have one. Unless he's not into guys...** 'He's right,' Mistral echoed in Skye's mind. 'And we already suspect that being with men will not be a problem.' **I'd rather not think about that right now. We have enough issues to deal with, like getting out of here for one. Besides, we haven't seen Jhaeros since we arrived. One problem at a time.** Skye saw Quanta approaching and finished tightening the ties on his vest. "Everyone is clear-headed again. You up to helping me finish with the mages?" "Don't you need to rest after removing the effects of the blossoms?" Skye asked. "Hardly. It was a very simple casting, and with as much magic as is flowing through this place, it was as easy as calling hand fire," Quanta explained. "I have to keep reminding myself not to get spoiled. While the magic is a rush, I really don't want to spend the rest of my days in Underhill." "At least you were wise enough to bring your mate. I hope you're going to make it up to him," Skye said. "Don't let him fool you. Other than my brief lapse, Aksel's having the time of his life." Skye and Quanta both turned when they heard loud laughter coming from Skye's wing-mates. "You're quite the miracle worker, Skye. I haven't seen the young siren look that happy or animated since his arrival," Quanta said. Skye debated only seconds before deciding that it was better just to tell the mage. "Revali is part of our wing now. We had planned for that part last night, just not the other stuff. The guys are happy to have him bonded, and it also took away some of the tension." "There was a problem?" Quanta turned to look at Skye. "I was out of it by the time you returned with your team." "Not really, but when my magic notices someone, they can all feel it. When the person is nearby, and I don't complete the bond, it gets to be uncomfortable for all of us," Skye explained. "Interesting. I'm going to hold all my questions for now, though I do want to know more about your bond and the process. As the master mage, I feel it is my duty to make sure I know as much as possible and record it for future generations. While I was there when you bonded Zopyros, I'd love to observe the process with a true wing-mate." Skye was speechless for a moment as the thought of Quanta watching rolled through his mind. "I'm not sure I'm ready for that. It's a rather...personal-" "Oh... OH! No, no." Quanta's face went red and he stammered. "Uh, we'll figure out something, but I'm not a voyeur. I want to understand how the magic works with your bonding process since we've had little luck finding records. I'd also like to see how your magic reacts around the heartstone. It seems to react to you and River differently than the rest of us." "Great, this means more tests, doesn't it?" Skye groaned. "Of course. You and River are unique, and it fascinates me that your powers are manifesting differently. Testing is a necessary part of your training as well." "Wait, how'd I get dragged into this? I'm fine with you testing Skye, no need to poke and prod me!" River said. "You need training too, perhaps even more than Skye, so you don't hurt yourself or those you care about. And the poking and prodding will be magic and psychic, though practicing spell work while in a combat situation is a good idea." Something else I'm not going to worry about right now. Skye stood and stretched, looking down at his mate and then offering him a hand. "Are you going to join us?" "Yeah, my stinky hair will have to wait for another time." "Garrett, I didn't say it was stinky. And you're not allowed to go back to the room until it has been cleaned." Skye pulled Garrett into him and kissed him. **And no banging any elves when I'm not with you.** **Are you...jealous?** Garrett teased. **Protective is a better word. You are my dragon, Garrett D'Or Drakken. And I'd rather we stick together until we figure out what Underhill is up to.** "Ready to heal some mages? I don't think they're in imminent danger, but the sooner we destroy the remnants of that curse, the better I'll breathe," Quanta said. "Yeah, we are. I'm sorry for putting you and your men in danger, Quanta," Skye said. "Don't be. This has been a great learning experience for all of us and getting the chance to see the legendary Underhill. I'm honored and humbled to be of help." * Scene 2 * Skye bit at his lip nervously as he stood where Quanta had placed him. Unlike the last time, Quanta put Skye inside the triangle and protective circle with him and the mage to be healed. Oisin and Fionn were at two of the triangle's points outside the wards, and Mordish had recovered enough to stand at the third. "You've got this, babe," Garrett encouraged from where he was standing against the wall with River and Jayce. Gilian was standing guard in the hallway. Skye couldn't help but appreciate how handsome Garrett looked in his dark, tight-fitting leathers. I think if I had my way, Mistral, I'd keep Garrett in leather all the time. 'Or naked, naked is nice,' Mistral added. "Yeah, and no feeling up the sexy druid," River added. "River!" Skye yelled as the heat crept into his face. River smirked and shrugged in response. Skye hadn't touched, but it wasn't because he didn't want to. The druid's golden-brown hair was haloed around his head over the pillow, and his scruff looked even darker, setting off his high cheekbones. And why did they strip him to the waist? Not that Skye didn't appreciate the view. Mattekin was ripped and had a beautiful Celtic style tattoo across his pecs. Skye reminded himself that he needed to focus. "What do you want me to do, Quanta?" Skye asked. "Shield yourself, and if you don't mind, me as well. It will let me concentrate on the curse. If anything goes wrong, I welcome whatever intervention you think might work. It was effective for Mordish, so I'm not expecting problems." Quanta answered without acknowledging River's comment, though he was smiling. "I can do that." "I'd also like you to keep your mind open to me and observe carefully. Being in my head, the spells should make sense to you; just be careful not to repeat the words out loud." "Got it." Skye wondered what would happen but wasn't about to test it. "Do I need to do anything with Mattekin?" "No. I expect that he put himself in a trance like I did." Quanta rolled up the sleeves on his tunic, and Skye wondered why the mage got normal clothes. Not that he didn't like the leathers, but why? "Mordish, are you ready?" "We are." Mordish signaled to Oisin and Fionn, and Fionn started the chant. Mordish and Oisin joined in, and within seconds, the sigils chalked onto the walls began to glow. Quanta looked at Skye and nodded. Skye extended his shield, wrapping it around the master mage as well as himself. Once he checked to make sure it was stable, he opened his mind to Quanta. **It's in place.** **I can tell. Your shielding is impeccable, and you do it as if it was second nature. I'll activate the wardings.** Quanta spoke a word out loud, and the circle, triangle, and sigils burst with light as if the mage had thrown a switch. Quanta's hands hovered over Mattekin. **I'm going to open my mind's eye to the magic so that I can see the power as it builds. It isn't required, but it can help you control your power. Skye...are you intentionally extending your magic to the druid?** **What? No. I'm doing the shields just like you asked.** **Interesting.** Quanta turned and gave Skye a skeptical look but dropped it for the moment. **I'm going to begin.** Skye listened closely as Quanta started the spell. He felt the power behind the words and picked up the nuances from Quanta's mind. Skye wanted to avoid looking too much at the druid, but then he wouldn't be able to help. Like before, he watched as the shadowy worm lifted and was cocooned in bands of light. It was different than the large dark cloud that they'd drawn from Zo. This one was substantially smaller. He also noticed that the process was much faster with Quanta than it had been with Mordish. If Skye hadn't been paying close attention, he would have missed the curse bursting into nothing. He also tried to see what Quanta had questioned about his magic reaching out to the druid. Even seeing it for himself, he didn't understand the golden glow that seemed to tether him to Mattekin's core. Quanta carefully checked the druid for any remaining vestiges of the curse and then checked Mattekin's magic. **He looks good. His power is clean, and I see no signs of the curse. What about you?** **It's gone. Are you feeling well?** Skye turned his attention to Quanta and did a quick scan. The mage seemed fine and showed no signs of fatigue. **Like I said, doing spells now that the heartstone is clean is like being plugged into a node of power. You can release the shielding now.** Quanta spoke a word and the glow from the protective wardings faded. The other mages ended their chant, and the sigils went out as well. "He is already waking. We'll need to talk about this, Skye." The master mage turned and faced Skye. "Even when you dropped the shielding, your magic stayed connected to him. Something you want to tell me?" Quanta carefully stepped out of the chalked markings to give room to the elf guards who entered to help the groggy and stumbling druid from the room. Itheral supervised, and soon other guards carried in another mage. The silence was heavy. "My magic um...might have noticed him? I didn't touch him, so I can't say for sure." "You mean like it did with your other wing-mates? That's how it starts?" "I never used my magic sight before on someone who it noticed. So...um...I don't know?" "UGH! Discipline, Skye. If you're going to be adept at magic, you must learn these things. We'll discuss it later." "Did you have any problems? It seemed to go quickly, and I didn't sense anything," Skye said, hoping to distract the mage from being angry with him. He watched as Mordish and Oisin touched up and repaired the chalked circle where the elves had scuffed it. "The remnants of the curse were very weak and may have even dissipated on their own. I can't compare to my own, but since I was the closest, I may have gotten the brunt of the blowback. Observe again on the next one, and I may walk you through doing the spell." Skye considered arguing but figured it was pointless. Somehow it didn't surprise him that Quanta would turn this into a training exercise. He watched as Quanta conferred with the other mages and picked up that he was making sure they were up to doing more. The next two went smoothly, and the elves were bringing in the last of the infected mages. Skye was pretty sure the mage was one of the helpers who'd been outside the wards when Quanta had removed the curse from Zo. "Can you show me what you see? If the curse on Hanan is no stronger than the others we've removed, I'd like you to do it, and I'll hold the shielding," Quanta said as they stepped up to the cot. "I don't think I'm ready for-" "Of course you are. If you're in my head, I can guide you through every step. You'll do fine." "But I can't tap the magic here and-" "Stop arguing, Skye. You have more than enough innate magic to handle this. Prepare yourself and show me. Mordish, set the outer wards," Quanta ordered. **I have faith in you, Skye. You can do this,** Garrett encouraged. 'I agree, Skye. Quanta won't let us fail,' Mistral said. Skye opened his other sight and took Quanta's hand, showing him the shadowy curse trying to get through Hanan's shields. "This one looks even weaker, perfect. Connect to me, and we'll begin." Quanta activated the wards, and Skye felt the magic of the master mage's shield wrap around him. **Ah, there you are. You'd probably have no trouble shielding yourself, but I want all your concentration on the spell. The wards are all in place, now, repeat after me.** Skye felt odd chanting the strange words, but as he did, he could feel the magic building and taking form. The image and intent of the spell were clear in his mind. He focused as hard as he could on following Quanta's instructions. **You're doing very well, we're almost there,** Quanta said. Skye felt the magic recoil slightly as the curse was destroyed. He gathered in the power and slowly let it dissipate as Quanta guided him. He took a deep breath and used his other sight to confirm that the curse was gone. "Good job, Skye. I knew you could do it," Quanta said. "May I check him over now?" Itheral asked from the doorway. "Yes, please come in." Quanta put his hand on Skye's shoulder and walked over to where Garrett and River waited. "Prince Skye, if you and the others wish to return to your rooms, they have been cleaned of the blossoms and should be safe now," Itheral said when he stepped into the room. "I'm sure you'd all like to clean up since you didn't get a chance this morning. But before you go, I wanted to say that while we're stuck here in Underhill, I think it would be a great time to continue your lessons. With Mattekin and Mordish's help, I think we can also work with your wing-mates. Maybe at least confirm their potential," Quanta said. "Isn't that dangerous here? The magic seems much stronger here than on Draga," River said. "It is stronger, but since most of you are dragons, that shouldn't have a huge impact. You aren't tapping into the flow directly. I'd be more worried about us if Mattekin and Mordish weren't already accustomed to working in Underhill." Skye noticed Quanta didn't include himself in the concerns. "I think it's a good idea, but I also thought we ought to help search for the portal," Skye said. "Not to worry, I think there's enough time to do both. Or perhaps we have those not being trained search and then trade off," Quanta said. "If you don't mind, I'm going to follow you back. I'd like to examine the heartstone." "Skye and I both checked it again, and we didn't see any signs of the curse," River said. "I should hope not. Could you feel a difference in the magic?" Quanta asked. "Oh, yeah. Much stronger, like it wanted to pull me in," River said. "It felt like with that much power, I could do anything." "It's a bit scary. I'm kinda glad we can't use it," Skye added. "So why can't dragons tap into the magic like human and other mages? I mean, Skye and I are still half-human, right? And I could certainly feel the power, it gave me a wild buzz," River asked. "Yes and no. I can't give you a clear answer other than that's just not how dragons work. And while you may have a human form, it isn't the same as still being human. And you 'can' tap into ley lines and nodes, or in this case the heartstone, you just can't turn that magic directly into spells." "So what good would it do to tap into that power?" Skye asked. "It will recharge your store of magic, and you could channel the power into a mage and increase their abilities beyond what they could draw on their own. Somewhat like you can draw on your wing-mates when your own power is waning, you'd be a conduit," Quanta explained. "Wouldn't they burn out if you pushed too much magic?" River asked. "If they tried to draw it themselves, yes. We are limited in what we can draw and how much magic we can channel on our own. Each mage is different, and few could handle tapping into the heartstone. But magic filtered through another mage or dragon is different." "Shit, so all those books we read about evil wizards, using other magic users to build their power and sacrificing them, were actually true?" Skye asked. "I can't speak to the books, but the concept is correct. Though the sacrifices would be considered abhorrent and would bring down the wrath of the Circle." "The Circle? Is that like the Ministry of Magic?" River asked. "I'm not familiar with them. The Circle is the governing body for users of magic and ultimately reports to the Emperor." We're going to have to ask Father about that one, Mistral. I sure never heard of it. **Have you, Garrett?** **Never. I don't ever recall Father talking about the Circle.** "Well, let's go. I'm looking forward to a shower," Skye said, taking Garrett's hand. Garrett laughed. **Yeah, you just want to escape before the druid shows up. Can't fool me, baby. And now that Quanta is on to you, I don't think he's going to let it rest.** "Garrett, you might want to clean up too. You're a bit fragrant," River teased. "It's my hair, damn it. I don't have time to deal with it, so you can just suffer," Garrett growled. "A cleansing spell would take care of that. Maybe if you learned how to use your magic, you wouldn't have these problems," Quanta said, not even trying to hide the snark as they walked back toward their rooms and the room of doors. **Guess I'm not the only one Quanta's going after.** Skye teased his mate. "Wait." River paused and looked around. "This hallway..." "Yeah, appears Underhill moved things again," Skye said. "Hold back and let us walk on ahead." Gilian gestured for them to remain, and then she and Jayce continued on. "How do they live with this? It would drive me crazy," Quanta muttered. "Pretty sure that for some, it does," Skye said, turning to look at the master mage. "Can I ask? Do you have the sense of being watched all the time?" "Only when I'm using magic, why?" Quanta asked. "From what we were told, the elves and I guess some of the other fae have that feeling all the time." Skye smiled as Garrett wrapped him in his arms. Skye turned his head for a quick kiss. "It's clear." Gilian returned far enough to beckon them to follow. She didn't say anything else until they caught up with her. "Strangely enough, everything is even closer than it was before." "I guess that's not a bad thing," River said. "Are we going to search for the gateway once everyone has a chance to clean up?" "Unless Quanta needs us for something or finds a safe enough place to continue your lessons, I assume so," Skye said. "What do you mean by that?" River protested. "That's a good point. I'll check out the heartstone and then look for a suitable 'safe' location," Quanta said with a smile. "Oh, yeah. You guys are so funny," River muttered. * Scene 3 * "You don't have to go with us if you don't want to," Skye repeated, somewhat worried about the fear he was picking up from Revali. "I thought you might want to shift and get some flying time in. You wouldn't be by yourself. I expect that several of the dragons will shift and fly with you. We'll take a pack with your stuff, and if you get too tired, you can shift and walk with the others." "You're not flying?" Revali asked. "If you need me to, I will, but I think others need it more than I do. Hey, you'll get to see Chaz in his were-dagger form." "Yeah?" "Sure, and while he looks scary, I promise he's the same sweet guy." Skye smiled when he felt Revali's reaction, glad that the siren liked the idea of seeing Chaz. They'd all been very cautious around Revali since the bonding to make sure he was adapting okay. From what Skye sensed, the siren was in a much better place, and Skye hoped not to jinx things with the thought that the siren seemed happy. "Do you think you'll find whatever you're looking for?" "I don't know, but it's worth a try. Underhill is like a place 'in- between,' and just like the portal you walked through to get here, there should be others to let us return home. Right now, we just don't happen to know where they are. Any who are fae should be able to 'feel' or sense the presence of a portal. I know it didn't work that way on Hell-World, but it should here." "I want to help." Revali stood a little taller and got a determined look on his face. "Good. We're going to have different teams. River, Nik, Kuai, and Bryan will be in the first group. Mica, Teak, Venci, Gilian, and Raphael will be in the second group, and we'll go with Garrett, Chaz, Corbin, and Jayce." "Bram and Noud aren't coming with us?" Revali asked. "They're leading their own group with some other elves. Why?" Skye asked and realized that Revali had grown rather attached to the two elves, especially after their night of...intimacy. Mistral's laugh echoed in Skye's head. 'Is that what we're calling it now? Intimacy? Maybe I'm a simple dragon, but I'd call it fucking. Very good, hot, and satisfying sex, but fucking, nonetheless.' I guess I should be thankful we didn't scar him and that he enjoyed what happened, Skye said to his dragon. 'Might be an understatement. He was very good with what went down. Have you noticed his thoughts about Chaz? He'd really like to try repeating the activities with him, then Jayce, then Corbin...' Yes, yes. I get it. Revali liked the sex, and the bonds are working overtime with his wing-mates. 'The bonds feel stronger here...' Mistral said. "Okay, everyone is ready," Gilian called out. "We'll all exit the hold together and then group up into our teams. Skye, your telepathy still works here, right?" "Yes." Skye did a quick mental check and easily felt all his wing-mates that were in Underhill. Unfortunately, it reminded him of how many of his wing were cut off and remained out of reach. It wasn't that the bonds were gone, just stretched so thin that he couldn't do more than acknowledge the connections were there. Skye was pleased that Mica had put Gilian in the lead. She was the most familiar with Underhill, or at least as familiar as anyone could be with a place that was constantly changing. "So, he should keep us on group chat?" River chimed in. "If that means we can all hear each other, yes. Damn, okay, we need to make a change, Bram, you go with Mica's group, and I'll take your place with Noud's team. That way, all the teams can stay in touch with Skye." The group followed Gilian as she led them to the tunnel that would take them to the exit. Skye watched to see if anything looked familiar to when Queen Caladwen brought him into Underhill the last time. It wasn't until they'd almost reached the end that he recognized the finished stone transitioning to a rough-hewn cave. Roots had broken through in places and trailed across the ceiling. Skye spent enough time looking around that he ended up being toward the rear of their procession as they stepped out of the underground area of the hold. He turned and looked back at the almost hidden entrance and wondered why the fae halls weren't built more like a castle above ground. He doubted it was a limitation on the magic but couldn't think of a good reason. "There is a clearing a few minutes' walk from here, where those who are going to shift can do so. The path should lead us there, but just in case, please follow me," Gilian called out. River fell back to walk beside Skye. "It's just like you said." River gawked up at the trees towering overhead. The forest was indeed as Skye had remembered, where all of the trees and plants were larger and more colorful than he'd ever seen anywhere else. Even the ferns that grew under the heavy canopy were taller than any of their group. The scents of earth, woods, and growing things were thick in the air. Fortunately, not the scent of the delea blossoms, he thought. Strange bird and insect sounds surrounded them, making him think of a jungle. "This is so cool!" River said. "Yeah, but be careful and check with Gilian or Teak before you touch anything. Pretty sure some of the plants are carnivorous." He didn't see any of the large flowering plants near their path and then realized that unlike the last time he visited, everything looked healthy. At least where they were now, he didn't see any signs of death and decay. River turned to Skye with wide eyes bringing him back to the moment. "Seriously?" "This is the same place that has the delea grove. I'm not assuming anything is safe. Are you or Nik going to shift?" Skye asked. He wondered how Gilian would organize their search since it relied on them feeling the magic of the gateway. "Nik is really antsy, and I'm feeling pretty good. Storm said he can wait. That puts one of us in the air with Bryan, and Kuai and I can scout on the ground," River said. "The two of them doing okay?" Skye asked in a whisper. "Seem to be. You know you could just read them? But from what I pick up and the heated looks they keep giving each other, I think they needed the hard fucking." "Good, maybe they can concentrate now and spend less time finding ways to irritate each other." River laughed. "I didn't say they were there yet. I think it's going to take a lot more fucking until they've got it out of their system." Skye groaned and reminded himself to watch the path as he almost tripped. "I don't think I really looked around when you brought us through before. We somewhat went straight to the hold and then the throne room," Garrett said. "It feels different this time. More alive..." Skye couldn't stop himself from touching one of the large trees they passed. He felt a quiver flow through him at the touch, but unlike before, the tree was already healthy, and his touch didn't seem to change anything. They stepped into a clearing, and Skye had a flashback to walking through the same meadow when he had noticed Teak. Numerous gigantic butterflies flitted from flower to flower as he watched, some were the size of dinner plates, and others had to have at least a meter wing-span. "Okay, people, those who are going to shift, leave your clothes over here. Except you, Rev. Put yours in the pack and give it to Garrett. Please make sure to stay close to your team at all times. You'll need to concentrate to feel the hum of magic that a portal gives off, but I promise, you'll know it if you find it. Skye will be listening, so if anything seems strange or you see something you consider a threat, let him know right away," Gilian shouted to the group. "Each team will take a different direction. Skye's group will go north, River's group take the south, Mica you take west, and my group will go east. Don't go farther than an hour's flight without checking in." Skye looked up and wondered if they could even travel an hour's distance. When he flew here before, he couldn't go half that distance before he found himself back where he started. Maybe I just trust Gilian since it won't change anything. He watched as several of his wing-mates began to strip. Nik, Bryan, Teak, Venci, Chaz, and Corbin had all elected to go in their other form. Revali was glancing over at Skye nervously. "It's okay, Rev. Corbin will fly with you from our team, and we'll be nearby. Itheral thought it would be good for you now that you've gotten some rest and food." Skye rubbed Revali's arm as they spoke. "I'm not a dragon." Revali said it like it was a failing. "No, you're a bad-ass bird of prey. Chaz and Teak aren't dragons, and someday you'll meet your other brothers. I know it doesn't mean anything to you now, but we also have a panther shifter, a wolf shifter, and a bear shifter. And are you saying Gil is less because she's not a shifter at all?" "No! Of course not...it's just that..." "Close your eyes, and try to find our connection. Once you can find it, then feel for your ties to the others. I know it's new, but if you concentrate, you'll get a sense of them and their emotions and even strong thoughts. Is anyone thinking you're not one of us?" "Well, no..." "Eventually, it will get stronger, and you'll pick up more. I can assure you that everyone was nervous when they first joined. Give it a try, and if you're still uncomfortable flying, I'll shift and join you. How does that sound?" Revali gave Skye a bashful smile. "Okay. I miss flying. They sent me to patrol multiple times a day, so it's been weird staying inside all the time." "I'll help him, Skye. Something you might want to check on over there," Garrett said as he strode up to them. He gave a head toss toward Corbin, and Skye's eyes followed. "Right." Skye smiled as he heard Garrett's "You're welcome" echo in his mind. Corbin hadn't gotten far, just his vest removed as he bent over and struggled to get the laced boots off. Skye stepped behind him and slid his hand over Corbin's round leather-clad ass. "What?" Corbin startled and almost fell when he stood since his boot was still half on. Skye caught him and gripped an ass cheek giving it a squeeze. "Little pig, little pig, let me in..." "Oh, Father Dragon," Corbin groaned as he managed to extricate himself from the boot. Skye slid his hands around to unlace the leather pants as he pressed into Corbin's back. "No nasty armor to hide behind this time, little pig." "You're going to kill me. Is that your plan?" Corbin sighed as his dick fought to escape when Skye slid the pants down his thighs. "Shit, Skye. You know I'd gladly let you in anytime you wanted. Fuck, I miss you." Skye helped Corbin out of the pants but stayed behind him, letting his fingers tease down the dragon's crack to his already slick dragon-hole. He gently teased it, sliding his finger inside. "Yeah?" "Father Dragon, yes. You're going to make it really hard for me to pay attention. You want to give me a quick fuck?" "No more quick fucks for you, Corbin. You deserve more. This is just a promise for later. Maybe you could swap out sleeping arrangements tonight and join Garrett and me." Skye licked up Corbin's neck and nibbled at his ear. "Yes," Corbin moaned. "Take good care of Revali up there. He's nervous and scared." "Of course." Corbin turned in Skye's arms, and they kissed before Skye pulled away. "Tonight," Skye said as he winked and walked over to the others. Chaz had already shifted and was butting his huge head against Revali. Skye assumed he was encouraging the siren to get undressed and shift. "Pretty magnificent, isn't he?" Skye ran his hand along Chaz's leathery flank, feeling the heat and powerful muscles of the were-dagger. "You were right; he is really scary looking," Revali said with a bit of tremble in his voice. "Chaz explained to me that were-daggers are somewhat of a cross between a panther and a black dragon. He's amazing in a fight, and while he can't fly, he's damn fast and can leap like you wouldn't believe," Skye explained. "I've never seen a panther either. Can he still talk?" Revali moved closer and ran his hands down the dragon-like snout. "Yes. Maybe because he's part dragon. Most of the shifters other than dragons can't. But they can usually still communicate with their own kind. Any of them can speak to us mentally if River or I facilitate." **Don't forget Kwill and Beck,** Chaz reminded him. **I'm trying not to terrify him just yet, Chaz. Besides, when have they ever done that?** **But they could.** Chaz let out a low rumbling purr that vibrated through Skye's body. "Does that mean he's going to eat me?" Revali asked as he stepped back. Skye laughed. "No, not at all. That's his purr. It means he's happy, but I agree if you didn't know him, it is unnerving. It's time to shift, Rev." "Okay." Revali moved away toward the edge of the forest and began to undress. Skye noted several of his wing-mates watched protectively. Skye hoped that the self-confidence would eventually come. Revali's form began to shimmer, and then a giant eagle-like bird stood and stretched his wings. "He might not be a dragon, but he sure is big," Skye said as he felt Mica step up beside him. "Did you notice that he's substantially larger than the female sirens? You know if he trained, he's more than big enough to carry one or two riders," Mica said. "Huh... You're right. Maybe when we get back, we could ask Bianchi to work with him. I'd think some of the same rules would apply. And thank you for already thinking to include him, Mica." "Of course. That's my job, you know." Mica leaned in and gave Skye a shoulder bump. "I hear I need to find a new bedmate tonight." "Oh, yeah. I hope that's okay," Skye turned to look into Mica's blue eyes and felt a wave of relief at the sparkle and the smile that lit his surfer dude's face. "Sure. But you owe me." Mica turned and strode off, and Skye couldn't help but laugh. Corbin had shifted and already taken off, calling out to Revali to join him. Corbin's golden scales gleamed in the sunlight. He was a magnificent beast with an almost regal bearing. Revali took off and was soon flying and diving with his new wing-mate. Skye watched as the others took to the air. Nik was still smaller than most of the dragons, but Garrett assured him he'd grow larger. Bryan was as bulky in his dragon form as he was as a man, a thick broad head and heavy tail made him obvious even at a distance. Then there was Venci's Prada. The copper dragon's scales glowed like a smoldering fire, and in keeping with his personality, he was one of the more fine-featured dragons with a frill instead of horns from his skull down his neck. "Time to trek on," Garrett said as he and Jayce joined Skye. They caught up with Chaz at the edge of the meadow and let the were-dagger take the lead in finding a path through the forest. "Makes you feel rather puny and insignificant, doesn't it?" Jayce commented, looking up into the canopy. "Yes. I might be envying Corbin at the moment. You can't even see the sky, and the air is thick," Garrett said. "And yet it's also beautiful. I'm picking up so much magic in the air, and in everything around us, I'm kinda afraid I won't be able to pick out the portal even if it's here." Skye and Mistral basked in the sensations. "Have you heard anything from Underhill?" Jayce asked. "Not a thing," Skye grumbled. "We're not glowing as much, is that good or bad?" Garrett asked. "When Caladwen brought me here, it faded over time. Not my eyes, but the general glow. I don't know that it means anything." "Why don't the other fae glow like dragons?" Jayce asked as he ducked under a large fern. "I don't know...maybe because dragons have more magic in their nature? That's just a guess. I've noticed that Underhill is already showing signs of recovery. When I was here before, there were sections that looked dead and blighted." "I haven't seen anything like that," Garrett said, holding back foliage so Skye could pass. **Corbin, are you and Rev seeing anything from up there?** **Birds and other creatures in the canopy, but nothing noteworthy. The forest stretches as far as we can see. I don't see any breaks, but there does appear to be a mountain range in the far distance,** Corbin answered. After an hour of walking, Skye did a mental check-in with the other wing- mates. Unfortunately, no one had found the portal, and they all agreed to continue. He debated for only a few minutes, and though he felt a little guilty for making his mate carry his clothing, Skye decided he might do more good flying. He quickly stripped, stowing his clothes in a pack, then shifted and took to the air, joining Corbin and Revali. Revali screeched and flew a loop around Mistral. Skye taking flight worked out in their favor when Skye felt the gnome village and was able to guide Garrett, Chaz, and Jayce, around, so they didn't disturb them. The canopy was thick enough, they couldn't see through it with their eyes. Mistral had no problem skimming over the treetops to keep them close enough to sense the magic that might be hidden below. They also found it much more enjoyable than their flights on Hell-World. Somehow it just felt right to be here, and Skye was glad Revali was enjoying himself. * Scene 4 * "Well, that was a waste of time," Gilian said as she slumped in her chair, staring at her food as if she wished it would levitate into her mouth. "Not totally. We learned a few things..." Skye said as he took another bite. "But nothing that helps us find a way out," River said. "I guess it does make me feel better that the food we're eating is real, and now I know where it comes from." "You thought it was magic?" Gilian asked. "Why not? Look at all the things we've seen. I don't think it was that far-fetched. Somehow seeing farm fields and herds of livestock stretching all the way to the horizon seems like a letdown. Though it was pretty obvious from their panicked reaction, the farm animals have no experience with dragons." "Lady Telawynn says we're some of the first to be here. I doubt the guards who came on the emperor's visits went out for a flight," Skye said. "It still makes me wonder why the last time when I tried to fly, the place seemed so small. We covered a lot of ground, and as far as I could see, we were nowhere close to a border," Skye said. "The farms have been here as long as I can remember, but I agree that it seemed bigger. I'm not sure why, but I can't remember ever exploring far beyond the hold," Gilian said. "Maybe bringing back the fae and removing the curse let Underhill expand," Garrett said. "Or more likely, Underhill was just fucking with you the last time. And since Mica's team found the delea grove, you know that part wasn't your imagination," River added. "True, but it worries me that what you saw was so much larger than the grove I remember." Skye was focused on his food but felt a shift in the room and noticed others around him turn to look toward the door. 'He's here,' Mistral whispered. Skye took a deep breath and turned to see the druid standing in the doorway while Master Mage Quanta and his mate, Aksel, stepped in to help themselves at the sideboard of food. "Hello, everyone. I was beginning to think you were all avoiding me. How am I supposed to say 'thank you'?" Mattekin said, crossing his arms over his chest. All eyes turned to look at Skye, and he could hear them all echoing the same questions in his head. "Thanks aren't necessary, I assure you. Quanta did the heavy lifting, but you're welcome." Skye turned back to his meal and felt the surge of disbelief from his wing. It was taking all of his self-control not to attack the poor druid, and pleasantries were simply out of the question. "You're too modest, Skye. I told Mattekin you and River have very strong potential," Quanta replied. **Baby, you cannot ignore him. The man is standing right there! He helped heal the heartstone, and we can all feel the pull. What's going on with you? You feel like you're going to lose it,** Garrett said. "Have you eaten? Why don't you join us?" Venci said, standing and waving a hand to the food. "Thank you. I guess I should introduce myself to everyone. I'm Mattekin." "No, please forgive our rudeness." Venci turned a pointed glare at Skye before he gave formal introductions to Skye's wing, making each stand as they were introduced. He introduced Bram and Noud as well, who had joined them after spending the day searching. "No one can fault Underhill for the quality or quantity of food." Mattekin prepared a plate and sat next to Venci. He ate slowly, glancing around at the others as they spoke of the day's search. Skye noticed the druid's eyes continually came back to rest on him. He didn't have to concentrate to feel the pull of the magic or know that the druid was confused by what he was feeling. Even Quanta, who was seated at the far end of the table, seemed to sense it and was watching Skye. "Please forgive me, but I've never spent much time around dragon shifters before. Several of you almost vibrate with magic." Mattekin pushed the empty plate away as he spoke. "How could you be from Draga and not have been around dragons?" River asked, and Venci gave a barely audible gasp. Skye wasn't surprised. Venci was supposed to help them with decorum and manners, and Skye was pretty sure he had already earned a lecture; why should River be any different? "I was born and raised on the fae lands and have spent my life there or here in Underhill," Mattekin responded, not showing any offense. "You're fae?" Nik asked. Mattekin laughed. "Not in the least, but having been born and raised among them, they've accepted me and let me come and go at will. I also help with the farms." "Because you're a druid?" Nik asked. "Yes. Which is why I've never had a desire to venture outside into what others call the modern world. I'm very comfortable here and in the fae lands." "Bet he and Willow would get on well," Garrett said quietly to Skye. Mattekin must have heard Garrett as he looked at Skye in question. "One of our wing-mates is a nymph. He is also very attuned to nature," Skye said. "How does he survive in the city? I assume that's where he lives," Mattekin said. "He does, and the Emperor and Prince Argos have given him his own section of the royal gardens to tend. While it isn't like being in the forest, the grounds at the palace are fairly extensive. Or at least enough to keep him happy," Skye explained. "May I ask, does your magic come from nature as well? It's hard to explain, but I feel this strong pull or draw to you, and I can't explain it," Mattekin asked. There were numerous snorts and coughs around the table, including Quanta, and Gilian went so far as to laugh out loud. Skye's glare did nothing to stop her, and if anything, she laughed harder. Mattekin looked around in confusion - probably replaying his questions in his mind. "You might as well tell him, babe," Garrett draped his arm over Skye's shoulders as he leaned in to talk. Obviously not trying to keep it a secret since he didn't just mind-speak. **I could be wrong, but I think Quanta is about to come out of his seat if he doesn't get answers soon.** "Tell me what? It's fairly clear that I'm the only one who doesn't know what's going on," Mattekin said. "I don't know either," Revali offered meekly. Chaz snorted and pulled Revali into him, rubbing his knuckles over the siren's scalp while he had him in a headlock. "Sure you do." Chaz leaned in and whispered in Revali's ear, both of them looking back at Skye and Mattekin. Skye saw the realization hit in Revali's eyes when he understood. His lips forming a perfect "o." "Yes, Skye, do explain it," Quanta urged. Skye looked at the druid who was giving him an inquisitive stare. He is handsome, Mistral. I think he'll be very popular with the wing if he can survive coming out of his forest. Fighting this is pointless. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. 'Sometimes you say very strange things,' Mistral said. 'Besides, Willow hasn't had any trouble and neither has Teak.' "A demonstration might make this clearer," Skye said as he stood and walked over to stand by Mattekin. "May I take your hand?" Skye was very aware of everyone watching. Mattekin lifted his hand to Skye and gasped as their fingers intertwined. His head dropped back, and he let out a deep moan as Skye gripped the chair to stay on his feet. The jolt of magic shot through Skye, making his head spin. "Wow... Did anyone else feel that?" Revali glanced around at the others nervously. "Welcome to being a wing-mate, Rev. When Skye's magic discovers a brother, we all feel it," Garrett said. "Eh...we also get other feelings too, but not to worry, you'll know when it's happening," River said. There were more laughs and snickers around the table but no one elaborated for Revali. "I could feel the surge of magic, but what did you feel?" Quanta asked. "It's sort of like a jolt of energy, but also, I don't know...erotic? Personal and intimate? Each wing-mate is different, but it doesn't seem to change the bond or connection. It only happens like that the first time we physically touch; if we do it again, it won't be as strong," Skye explained. "Mattekin?" Quanta asked. "Yeah, that's what it felt like to me too, but what does it mean?" "Skye, you should answer, and I'll fill in what I know and what we've learned from the priests' research," Quanta said. "Part of my magic as a platinum dragon is that it tells me when I find someone who is a good fit for my wing. It usually means they have a personality, skills, or abilities that make us stronger as a team. It starts as an attraction or pull, and when I touch the person, my magic reacts. The pull will get stronger and stronger until I use my powers to create a bond," Skye explained. "The bond is very similar to a mate bond but not as strong, Mattekin. It also extends to the others in Skye's wing, like a web. Not every platinum gets that ability, but those that do were often bound for positions of power or leadership. Many of the records were lost or destroyed. What has been found documents that those who the magic identifies tend to be within the circle of power that the platinum creates. They become advisors, generals, and leaders for the dragon," Quanta explained. "I didn't get that ability, though I'm also a platinum. My ability is to sense who is friend or foe regardless of a bond," River added. "And all of you are bonded to Prince Skye?" Mattekin asked. "Not all. Bram, Noud, Raphael, Quanta, and Aksel are not," Garrett said. "Do I have a choice?" Mattekin asked. "I would never force a bond on someone against their will. So yes, it is your choice. You should also know that the magic doesn't play fair, and it may get to be...uncomfortable." "I need to think about this," Mattekin stood and gave a bow to the group before leaving. When he had been gone for a minute, Quanta spoke again. "He doesn't really have a choice does he, Skye?" "No, not really. Unless the magic decides he's no longer a fit. One of my wing-mates fought it for quite a while, but it became almost an obsession. How strong it is and how quickly it progresses seems to be unique to each person. The pull eventually starts interfering with your life and becomes painful." Skye wasn't sure he wanted Quanta to know about Eluf, so he kept his name out of the explanation. "I won't ask you to divulge what you read from him. But I can venture to guess that he is torn. Mattekin shared with me that he has tried to avoid the outside world for some time. He's likely feeling that he's about to be ripped from everything he knows. That's a lot to take in," Quanta shared. "It is," Skye agreed. "River, I'd like to observe your power in action as well. Perhaps we can do that when we continue your training," Quanta said. "Um...sure." River glanced at Nik and took his hand. Skye was glad his brother had Nik and could feel how much comfort their bond gave the reticent dragon. Skye could understand why River was nervous about his magic; so far, it had been rather explosive. As everyone finished their meal, Skye felt the curiosity building in the master mage. He's not going to ask to watch me bond Mattekin is he, Mistral? 'Doubtful. I don't get the sense he wants to intrude on the intimacy, but his desire for knowledge may be warring with the idea.' "Skye, would you and River be willing to join me at the heartstone? I'd like to see how your magic reacts," Quanta asked. "Do you need me there as well?" Aksel asked. "No, love. I know it makes you uncomfortable. Perhaps you can talk military with Garrett?" "Unless Skye needs me?" Garrett said. "No, that's fine. You can stay with the others," Skye said. "I want at least two of us with you, Skye," Mica added. "How about Corbin and I join you." "That works. You guys stay out of trouble until River and I get back," Skye said. "No promises," Gilian retorted. Master Mage Quanta led them to the room of doors and slowly walked around the heartstone as if he expected to see something. River and Skye watched silently while Mica and Corbin took positions to either side of the entrance. "Did you want us to do something?" River asked. "In a moment. I don't have your natural talents, Skye. I need to use spell work to open my other sight to the magic." Quanta took a deep breath and closed his eyes. He lifted his hands and said a few strange words. Skye was aware that Quanta cast the spell, but there was so much magic in the room with the heartstone, he couldn't distinguish Quanta's casting from the rest. "Now I'm ready. I never thought to ask you, River, can you see the magic and flows as easily as Skye does?" River opened his mouth then closed it again for a second. "I've never tried." "Hmm...we'll have to add that to your lessons. Skye, what do you see when you look at the heartstone?" Quanta asked. "I can only glance for a second. It's too bright-more like looking into the sun. If I look to the side, I can tell it has a regular pulse of growing bigger and brighter, then it eases off and repeats." "River, if you would be so kind as to put your hands on the heartstone," Quanta instructed. Skye kept his other sight open, looking somewhat to the side, so he wasn't blinded. As soon as River was near, before he even touched the man-sized crystal, the light reached out and wrapped around his brother. River's colorful aura became as bright as the heartstone. "Fascinating. What do you feel, River?" "Power. Raw magical power. If I don't fight it, I'm afraid it will pull me in and drown me in magic." "You can step away. Skye, can you try it now?" Skye stepped forward, took a deep breath, and placed his hands on the smooth faceted surface. He was always surprised at how warm it felt when he'd expect the stone to feel cold. Just as River had said, Skye could feel the overwhelming magic pulsing through himself as well as the heartstone. "What is this showing you, Quanta?" Skye asked. "I'll need to do more tests. River's and your powers seem to be in tune with the heartstone, and to my mind's eye, you meld with it upon touching. It also reached out to both of you before you came in contact with it. Something it did not do with any of the other mages." But we don't know any more than we did before, Mistral. 'He is trying, Skye. Give the master mage time to figure it out.' "Quanta...something I don't understand is why the heartstone is here. In a room of doors, accessible to any who want to wander in. Does it need to be this close, so the doors work?" River asked. "And if it is so important, shouldn't it be protected? How do we make sure it isn't cursed again? I agree with River; I'd think Underhill would want it buried deep where no one could get to it." "I asked the elves a similar question. None of them had an answer, nor could any of them remember any stories or legends about the heartstone, other than it existed and was thought lost. Maybe if Underhill speaks to you again, you could ask. I'd like to talk with the other mages and come up with some experiments that will help us learn more about this resonance you have with the heartstone. Once we have a plan, I'll ask for your help again." "Skye will be glad to," River volunteered, which drew a glare from Quanta. "Nice try, little brother. Pretty sure he meant both of us." Quanta didn't say more as he led the way out of the room. They stepped into the antechamber, and just as Skye reached the halfway point, the subtle light that always illuminated the halls of Underhill went dark. "Don't move!" Mica called out. "Not to freak out even more, but something's pulling me away from Skye," River said. "Hey!" Skye got out before he felt himself falling. Something or someone had pushed him hard, and when he didn't hit the wall that was right beside him seconds ago, he knew he was in trouble. "Skye!" Mica and Corbin called out. Skye could feel their panic and knew from their thoughts they were trying to catch him, but he also knew he was already out of reach. * Scene 5 * Skye felt the braided rag rug beneath his hands and looked around in confusion. "What the hell?" he muttered. 'We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto, despite what it looks like," Mistral said. Skye wondered for a moment how Mistral even picked up the reference, then wanted to smack himself for forgetting that "he" was Mistral and mistral was "him." Skye stood and dusted off...his jeans? Looking around just confused him more. He was in a farmhouse, in someone's front parlor. Old fashioned lights provided a warm glow. The place looked well used and well-loved. He walked over to the fireplace and felt his heart drop to his toes when he saw who was in the photos on the mantle. "Oh, my God." Skye held the photo in his hand, tears beginning to form. It was of River and him with his parents, taken not long before they were killed. There were others. Mostly of River and Skye, but there were a few of his mother as a young girl and his parent's wedding picture. He glanced around, feeling an odd sense that he should know this place. 'Skye, stop and think. I can still feel the heartstone, we must still be in Underhill.' Skye concentrated and realized that Mistral was right. He could clearly feel the bonds to those who had come with him through the portal...and the others, still as weak as before. **River? Mica? I don't know where I am, but I'm okay. Mistral and I think we're still in Underhill.** **Fuck. Everyone is freaking out. As soon as you disappeared, the light returned. Do we need to come find you?** River sent. **I don't think so. I'm guessing Underhill might be ready to talk. I can still feel Garrett, so he should be able to sense what's happening to me. Don't worry, if anything happens, I'll scream real loud.** **Be careful, babe. I love you,** Garrett said. **I'll keep the others up to date.** **Love you too. Wish me luck.** Skye kept the connection open to Garrett but focused again on the here and now. He breathed deeply, and his stomach growled. The place smelled so good-like fresh baked pies? And cookies? Skye turned after setting the photo carefully back in its spot and followed his nose. He kept getting a strange feeling that he should know this place, like he'd seen it before. He passed an elegant dining room with a large table and lace tablecloth. He pushed on the swinging door that led into the large farm kitchen and froze. A plump older woman turned and smiled at him. She had her gray hair pulled back in a bun and was wearing a ruffled apron as she took a tray of cookies out of the oven. "There you are, Skye. I wondered when you'd get here. Sit down at the table, and you can have some cookies hot out of the oven. I made your favorite." Skye felt the tears coming again; it wasn't possible, and yet, his mind screamed that this was his grandmother. His mother's mother, who had died when he was young. "Grandma B?" "Oh, don't fuss, dear. My, but you have grown into a handsome young man. Would you like a glass of milk, or are you too old for that now? I have coffee." "Milk is fine." Skye stared at her as she poured the milk into a glass and set it on the table in front of him, along with a plate of cookies. It can't be. "Well, go ahead, dear. I made them for you." She returned to the stove and began placing the remaining cookies on a cooling rack. "Eat them while they're warm, that's when they're best." Skye took one of the cookies and bit into it. The flavors took him back to being a kid and sitting at this very table. He could almost feel the books underneath him that let him sit in the big chair at the table. Mistral, what's going on? 'I have no idea.' The woman sat down at the table and propped her head on her hands and looked at Skye. "So handsome. You have your mother's nose. Always knew you'd be a looker. Tell me, how is little River?" "Uh...fine?" Skye stammered. "Sometime you'll have to bring him back with you. I do miss that little devil. He still getting himself into trouble? He always had a talent for mischief. I heard he and some of the others passed by earlier today. My, but those dragons sure put a fright into the animals." "Uh...yeah." Skye looked over her shoulder and noticed pies cooling on the counter. "Do you like pie? I made several for the boys. They're always so hungry after chores, and those elves really do have a sweet tooth. They come by every morning to check on me." Skye's mind struggled to keep up, boys, pies, elves... "I don't understand." She reached out and laid her hand over Skye's. "It's okay, dear. You're not going crazy. I live here now and help out as I can. The elves who work on the farm adopted me as their grandmother when I first arrived. They've been so good to me. So in return, I cook and bake for them." "You live in Underhill? And you knew I'd be coming? How are you still alive?" Skye felt like his head was full of cobwebs, none of this made sense. "Oh, yes. The Keeper told me to expect you, said I needed to talk you and explain a few things. It will all be fine, dear. I promise. I know this is all very hard to accept. But I am your grandma, and I'm as real as I ever was. Now, eat your cookies." Skye ate the cookies and drank the milk while trying to get a better sense of the woman beside him. Her thoughts were simple and clear, no subterfuge or manipulations. She longed to hug him and hold him tight. She was afraid he wouldn't believe, that he wouldn't accept her, and she wasn't sure if she could handle it after waiting so long. Can it really be her, Mistral? How did she end up in Underhill? 'Only way to know is to ask,' Mistral responded. "Can I ask...so if it is really you, how'd you get here?" "You always were a skeptic. Terrible at trying new foods. You'd glare and screw up your face, making little fists like we were trying to trick you. Dear, you already know it's me. You can feel it in here." She tapped her chest. "Grandpa?" "He passed on, sweetheart. They tried, but the elves arrived too late to save him. He's in a better place now. He didn't take your mother's death well and was never quite the same after the accident. When the bad men broke into the house and attacked us, your grandpa stood up to them to keep me safe. I think he was ready to go. The elves in their glowing armor came through and either killed or scared off the others, but it was too late for him. I was so glad you boys weren't there." "Elves?" Skye confirmed. "Yes, dear, and wasn't I surprised! Never thought such a thing existed, then they show up, rescue me, and took me through my very own broom closet to this place. I'll tell you I'd been opening that door for decades, and it never took me somewhere new!" "Broom closet." Skye was trying to make sense of it, but if Underhill opened a doorway... "Are you still hungry? There are more cookies." "No, I'm fine, thank you. They brought you here? I'm sorry, Grandma B, I don't think I'm following any of this." "They did. Well it wasn't like this at first. I was here a few days staying with the elves, thinking I'd lost my mind, and then they told me my place was ready and brought me here." She raised her hands palms up like she was going to talk to God. "My home, just as I'd left it...or rather the way it was before the bad men came." "Why? And who were the men that broke in?" Skye asked. "No one ever told me who they were, but they did say they worked for the same people who caused the accident. Grandpa and I always had thought it was suspicious how the driver of the truck that hit your parent's car disappeared without a trace. But the police said it was an accident, and we were so thankful both of you boys made it out okay. I knew someone was watching over us when the plans changed and you and River weren't with us the night of the break in." "Wait, what plans?" "You and River alternated weekends between us and Charlie and Nancy. It was supposed to be your time with us, but Nancy scored tickets at the last minute for that Thomas the Tank thing that River loved so much, and we'd switched." "But why bring you here, and how did the elves know?" "For you, dear. And River. The Keeper said the Oracle had a vision, and they acted as quickly as they could. He told me that I'd need to help you someday, and here you are!" "Who is the Keeper?" "I'm sorry, I don't know. The elves tease me that I imagined him, but I assure you I'm not senile. He's an older distinguished elf who visits me occasionally. Usually, if there's something I need to do. I call him the Keeper because he's always trying to keep things in order, but he's never given me his name. He showed up early this morning before the elves came. Told me that today was the day and that I needed to tell you a few things. He also wanted me to warn the boys that the animals would be skittish when the dragons came by." Skye felt a little guilty about all the questions and that he wasn't just hugging his grandmother and being thankful, but he couldn't help the doubts and skepticism - it's who he was. "Do you know how you're supposed to help me?" "Not completely. For this visit, I'm supposed to talk to you and explain a few things. I don't know what comes next. But he said I'm not done." "Okay then, I'm listening." "Aren't you grown up now! My, my, your parents would be so proud. But I hear that you're as stubborn as ever. You always did fight change." "Can you tell me how I can get my people out of Underhill?" "Oh, it's not time for that yet. There are some things that have to happen first, but I can get you started on the path. The Keeper wanted me to thank you for bringing the dark fae back to Underhill, but your work isn't done. The balance has to be restored and plans set in motion to get them resettled. The dragons and the fae need to increase their numbers and work together to prepare for what's coming." "And that means what?" Skye asked. "The Keeper said that he can help you, but to do so you've got to make more of the elves compatible for dragons and bring the others into your wing. He said you'd know who." "All the elves? I don't think so. I am not about to have sex with 'all' the elves, thank you very much!" 'There aren't "that" many in Underhill,' Mistral reminded him. More than I want to bang, thank you. Skye felt a bit miffed that Mistral didn't see an issue. His grandmother let out a sigh. "You're overthinking this, dear. Don't you understand your own abilities? You don't have to have carnal relations to change them." "Carnal relations?" Skye snickered. "Is that your way of saying sex? How have you survived among the fae?" She waved her hand at him. "You know what I meant." "And to your question, no, I don't know my own abilities, and apparently neither do the other dragons. I didn't get a guide book or an instruction manual, so I'm playing it by ear." "Hmm. That explains a few of the things the Keeper told me. Your magic is what brings about the compatibility, not the coupling. When you add the physical to the magic, it doesn't just make them compatible, it begins the change." "So if I just did the magic portion, they'd what? Be like humans and only change when they were bonded?" Skye asked. "That's my understanding. He said to tell you it will work on shifters as well as elves and fairies. I understand you already know it works on male nymphs?" "Yeah, well we think it does. Did this 'Keeper' say it would work on anyone else?" "Not that he told me. He doesn't know about the other races because they're not his and haven't been to Underhill. Something he said was important for you to know is that the change carries forward. So whether it's shifters or elves, if they mated with their own and had offspring, they too would carry the compatibility." "If that's true, why didn't it stick around from the last time there was someone like me? And if he knows all this, why can't he explain it to me?" Skye asked. "I don't know. Once you finish your bonds and use your magic on those he presents to you, he'll contact you again. He said to tell you that there are many ways that Underhill can help you and prepare you for what's coming." "How do I know this 'keeper' won't just keep adding to the list of demands? And what do you mean, 'what's coming'?" "You still don't trust anyone, do you, Skye? You'll have to take it on faith, dear. I've told you everything he passed on. Maybe you can ask when he contacts you? I do hope you'll come back and visit. Next time, maybe you can bring River?" Skye heard the pleading in her voice and knew from her thoughts there was nothing else she could tell him about what was coming, his powers, or what Underhill wanted from him. There was still so much he didn't understand, but he had no doubts she believed that she was his grandmother, and if the images that flittered through her head were any indications, it didn't give him much room to doubt her claim. "When we get the portal open, you can come home with us. You'll be more than welcome, and we can set you up in the palace and-" He stopped when he saw her shaking her head. "No, dear. I can't leave Underhill. This is my home now." "But-" "It was part of the agreement, Skye. You and River can visit me here." She glanced up as if she heard something. "It's time for you to go, dear. Now give this old woman a hug. I've missed you." Skye wrapped his arms around her and hugged tightly. Her scent brought back such strong memories, and he didn't even try to fight the tears this time. When she let go and stepped back, she had a sad look in her eyes that he desperately wanted to fix. She pointed to a door in the corner of the kitchen. Skye opened it slowly, only to see darkness beyond before he stepped through. * Scene 6 * Skye found himself back in their bedroom, and even before he got his bearings, Garrett wrapped him in his arms. "Are you okay?" "Shaken up, but yeah. You caught it, didn't you?" "I did. She was your other grandmother?" "She was. I thought she and my grandfather died shortly after my parents. That's what I was told, but River and I were pretty young, so my memory is rather spotty. The smells, though..." "Sense of smell is one of the strongest for memories, so I guess that makes sense. Do you think she was real?" Garrett asked. "I think so. Not sure it matters. You heard what Underhill wants me to do?" "I did, and I'm sorry you're feeling manipulated again. That seems to be happening a lot lately. But the silver lining is you already knew you had to bond Mattekin and likely, Jhaeros. And the big one, you don't have to have sex with someone to enable them to be a bond-mate. That's good news, right?" "I guess." Skye buried his face in Garrett's neck and held him tight. "How do you think Underhill can help us? And what was all that about 'what's coming'? Sounds rather ominous." "It does. So far, Underhill has told you what you needed to know and given what you needed in the moment and not before. Perhaps we take it one step at a time and see where it takes us? You probably ought to tell River." Skye sighed. "You're right, I'm not sure how he'll react but it's his call. I don't know if River remembers Grandma B, even my memories are vague. We don't have a lot of choices on what's next, Mattekin needs to think things over, and we haven't seen Jhaeros. I have no idea how to start on the elves, but maybe if we talk to the wing, someone will have ideas. And since we can't go anywhere, I think accepting Quanta's offer to train us more on magic is a good move." "Regrettably, Rett agrees with you and is excited about learning magic. The traitor. But Skye, there's more you need to know; something happened while you were gone. Most of the wing got visions. And before you ask, they were awake at the time, though it did knock everyone on their asses." "Visions? Did you?" "Not me, but the others. Underhill communicated some expectations to them." Skye could feel Garrett's apprehension. "Just spit it out, Garrett, or do I need to drag it out of your head?" A knock sounded at the door before Skye could finish. "Come in," Garrett called. The door opened, and Teak and Chaz stepped in. "Hey, guys. What is it?" Skye asked. "We just wanted to tell you," Chaz looked at Teak, who nodded. "We're glad you're back safe, and we both want you to do the thing to us. We agreed, we want to be able to be dragon bond-mates. Just...um... thought you should know it was our choice. No need to worry about it or feel guilty. That's all." "Yeah," Teak said. "We'll go now." They turned, and River stepped into the doorway as they passed. "You okay, bro?" "I am, but I learned some stuff. Can I tell you in the morning?" Skye asked. "Sure. You gotta stop scaring me, Skye. Do it again, and I might have to put a leash on you," River teased before he left, pulling the door closed behind him. "Garrett?" "Not everyone got the same vision. I didn't have time to get details, but Chaz and Teak's was about being bond-mates. And if you think about it, they already know about Dillon and have had time to think about what it would be like. Maybe that's not such a big leap. The rest of wing got some kinda crazy wild-ass visions of having an orgy with elves." "But if I don't have to have sex with them, then why?" Skye protested. "In the um...vision, they said you did your thing while the wing did theirs. I didn't get the vision, but you have to admit it would make the experience more memorable for the elves." "Memorable?" Skye scoffed. "Like being mojo'd to be able to mate with a dragon isn't memorable? This sounds suspiciously like a dragon's fantasy." "I can't argue that. I'm surprised you didn't get any spillover," Garrett's said. "So their visions didn't tell them why, did it show where this happened or to whom?" Mistral, this sounds suspicious to me. 'Sounds like fun to me. Why can't we join in? I don't want to just watch, that's not fair.' Skye felt Mistral withdraw in a sulk. "They said it was in the delea grove and I didn't ask about who. I'm sure you could ask the guys yourself." A knock sounded at the door again. Skye turned to glare at it while Garrett checked and opened it to reveal a nervous Corbin. "I'm ah...assuming plans changed with the abduction, visions, and all but thought I should at least check." Corbin shuffled his feet and stared at the floor. Garret looked at Skye, leaving it up to him, but Skye knew what his mate wanted. "No, Corbin. Please join us." "Are you okay, Skye? Underhill didn't hurt you, did it?" "Not at all, but I'm done thinking about it for tonight. How about you two distract me? And Corbin, in case I'm not coherent enough to remember to tell you later, I want you to stay all night. No slipping out. You owe us cuddles." Corbin's smile lit up the room. "If you insist." Skye crawled onto the bed and turned around to watch Garrett and Corbin undress. He'd had a rough day and figured he deserved a treat. Seeing Garrett and Corbin reveal their muscled bodies most definitely counted. "Aren't you going to undress, Skye?" Garrett asked. "Hmm. I want to watch you two. If you want me naked, then I think I'll leave it in your capable hands," Skye teased. "I think we can handle that," Corbin said as he managed to get out of his leathers with a lot more grace when Skye wasn't distracting him. The hunk turned toward Garrett and waggled his eyebrows. "Need help?" He reached out and ran his finger down the ties of Garrett's pants, where Skye's mate was trying to break through. With more teasing and touching than Skye thought possible, Corbin undid the pants and slowly slid them down Garrett's thick thighs. Garrett's cock was already shiny and dripping pre-cum. "Don't miss a chance to taste him, Corbin. He can make more," Skye said and watched as Corbin took Garrett into his mouth and sucked hard. "Fuck!" Garrett threw his head back and moaned. Corbin's back muscles flexed as he slid Garret's pants off the rest of the way. Of all Skye's wing-mates, Corbin was the one who most looked like Skye's idea of a soldier. Had he met Corbin on Earth, that would have been his first assumption. "You have a talented mouth, Corbin," Garrett rasped. Now that they were both naked, they climbed up on the bed to join Skye. "Which end do you want first?" "Can I take the top? I want to kiss him." "He does have sweet lips, go for it. I'll get this end ready for you," Garrett said. Skye had already removed his boots, and Garrett got the pants off in record time while Corbin worked on his vest. It felt nice being taken care of, and Corbin knew exactly what Skye liked done with his nipples as he was proving yet again. "Fuck, you are so sexy, Corbin." Skye bit his lip as he felt Garrett's mouth on him while Corbin nibbled and sucked on his nipples. Corbin was straddling Skye as he moved up to kiss him. Skye welcomed Corbin's tongue and prepared himself as he picked up on Garrett's plan. Skye eagerly swallowed Corbin's moan as Garrett's tongue found the gold's dragon hole and dove inside. "Father Dragon!" Corbin cried out, breaking the kiss. Skye wrapped his hand around Corbin's neck and pulled him back in. Seconds later, Skye felt the gifted tongue circle his opening, and it was his turn to moan. **My baby's already slick for me,** Garrett sent. He continued moving back and forth between the two of them, proving how skilled he was with his tongue. Skye was ready for more, and Mistral had finally come back from sulking to share the experience. Skye pulled his magic and found that it responded faster and easier than usual. Now, Mistral, if we can manage to get to both of them at the same time. But first, we need to make sure Corbin is ready for Garrett. My mate is not the most patient. Skye used his magic to relax and open up Corbin's dragon hole, gently stimulating his entrance and making sure he was slick and ready for Garrett. When he was confident that Corbin could take Garrett, he reached up and teased Corbin's nipples. "Corbin, I want you inside me. Garrett has me more than ready." "Are you sure?" "Very." Skye knew what Garrett was planning and did his best to distract Corbin while his mate helped get them positioned. Skye let out a groan as Corbin slowly slid inside him, stretching him out and filling him. Most of his wing-mates weren't as large as Garrett, but Corbin was nicely endowed and thick enough to make Skye concentrate on relaxing. "Ugh," Corbin grunted, and Skye knew Garrett had just slid into Corbin's slick dragon-hole without warning. Skye was glad he'd opened up Corbin for his mate because while surprised, Corbin wasn't the least bit upset, and there was no discomfort. "Father Dragon," Corbin moaned as he froze between them. Even prepared, it still took a moment to adjust to Garrett. "Keep moving, Corbin. I want to feel you. Fill me with your dragon seed as Garrett takes you." Corbin put his hands on either side of Skye's head to brace himself and began moving. Skye knew that he was overwhelming the gold with every erogenous zone he was hitting, but that was okay. He owed the dragon some mind-blowing sex. **Fuck, he is so tight and so good, baby. I think we all went too long without sex.** Skye couldn't stop the mental laugh, since for Garrett, twenty-four hours was too long. Days of forced celibacy was surely one of the levels of hell for a dragon. He felt thoughts of Garrett's fantasies sneak in and tried to push it away. Focus on Corbin, not elf orgies and Underhill games. Focus on how good Corbin's dick feels. "You like being in the middle, don't you, Corbin?" Garrett asked. "Fuck, yes." "I'm going to fuck the cum right out of you, Corbin. Make you unload deep inside my mate," Garrett said, pounding harder into Corbin and forcing him deeper into Skye. Between that and feeling what Garrett did, it was enough to push Skye into a powerful orgasm. "Ugh..." Skye cried out as his cock fountained between him and Corbin. His ass squeezed and tightened, bringing the gold over the edge as Garrett filled his ass. Skye felt like he could melt into the bed as he wrapped his arms around Corbin to keep him in place. He wanted to keep the full feeling and the connection to his wing-mate. Corbin's lips brushed over Skye's. Garrett pulled out, and Skye swallowed Corbin's moan. "If you two let me, I could help clean up all that dragon seed going to waste," Garrett said. "No, don't pull out. Sit up and let Garrett do his thing," Skye pleaded. Corbin kissed him again and repositioned himself. Garrett licked Corbin clean first and then sucked Skye's cock into his mouth and licked it until Skye was hard and thinking of how good Corbin's ass would feel. **Go for it, babe. As soon as I'm done.** Garrett licked up the spilled cum and then slowly kissed up Skye's abs to his nipples. He teased them until they were hard and leaking. **Now you're ready.** "Skye looks pretty hard again, Corbin. You want to ride him?" Garrett asked. Corbin carefully withdrew and leaned forward again to kiss Skye. "You want me?" "Always, Corbin." Skye watched the powerful man straddle him while Garrett helped align them, and then Corbin slowly lowered down, throwing his head back as Skye slid inside. "So good." **You want me at the same time, babe? I miss being inside you,** Garrett asked. **Yes.** Skye tried to relax, but even so, he had to concentrate on breathing as Garrett pushed inside. He loved how stuffed he felt with Garrett inside him and added to the tight silky ass wrapped around his dick, Skye figured he was about as close to heaven as a dragon could get. **Nah, your mouth is still empty. But don't worry, it won't be long until I've got you properly trained,** Garrett teased. 'Hmm, sometimes our mate is so smart. You should listen to him,' Mistral said. Skye gave up trying to think and enjoyed being with his men. Men... not just one, he had a whole wing of gorgeous men ready and willing to come to his bed. How did I get here, Mistral? 'You're complaining? This is a dragon's dream. Are you bothered that it's too many? Maybe think of it this way, who do you want to give up?' Skye mentally cringed at the thought and then let out an audible groan as Garrett hit him just so, sending jolts of pleasure through him. No, I couldn't, Mistral. Who would protect them like I can? 'And we'll do the same for Mattekin and Jhaeros. I'm thinking Mattekin would look very good riding us, his eyes rolled back, his cock standing tall as we pleasure him..." We're not sure about Jhaeros yet. But I agree the druid is pretty sexy. I think maybe I should give Corbin a booster. What do you say? 'Yes. Let's see how much we can make him cum.' Skye drew his magic and then reached out and connected to Garrett. His mate was totally on board with the plan and reached around Corbin to tease his nipples while he pummeled Skye's ass. "Ohhhhhhhh," Corbin cried out as his orgasm hit and the magic filled him. His eyes lit up, and his skin glowed brightly. Skye didn't hold back and let his release fill the dragon, gripping his hips and holding him in place. Garrett's orgasm wasn't as loud or showy, but Skye felt the wet heat fill him, and Mistral purred in satisfaction. The next thing Skye knew, Garrett was lifting Corbin off of him and laying him on the bed beside Skye. "You did it again." "Hmm?" Skye turned on his side and cupped Corbin's cheek. There was a smile on his face, but he was no longer conscious. Garrett licked Corbin's jizz off of Skye then crawled in behind him, wrapping his arms around Skye's waist and burying his face in Skye's hair. "Pretty awesome, babe." "Yeah...it really was." Skye leaned forward and laid a gentle kiss on Corbin's lips. "You up to fucking me now? I miss you." Garrett turned over and pressed his ass against Skye. It took only seconds for Skye to get positioned to be inside his mate. Garrett was already slick, and his hole sucked Skye in like this is what he'd been waiting for all along. "Fuck me hard, babe. I need this." Garrett rolled onto his stomach. Skye lay on top of his mate and pushed back in, stretching Garrett's legs aside so he could go deep. He didn't worry about Corbin or how much noise they made. He gave Garrett exactly what he wanted-a pounding in his muscled ass he'd still be feeling tomorrow.
