Dancing with the Dragon Chapter 57: Unexpected Gift by Tripp Savidge * Scene 1 * The torri gate in the palace garden began to glow and then the air in the center shimmered and blurred. The hum of magic raised goosebumps on Skye's arms. He pictured returning to Underhill in the same place, and hopefully, close to the same time as when they'd left. Mica guided Venci to the gate and then stepped back to allow their wing- mate to step through. He turned and gave Garrett a nod. Skye wasn't sure he was ready to return. He had more questions than answers and had no idea how they'd solve the multitude of challenges. He knew he was almost vibrating from the stress. He looked up at the gate again. I wonder why we can't see the other side when we open the gate, Mistral? When we left, we could see the garden. 'Not sure, but you know how secretive the elves are. Perhaps they don't want anyone to see what lies beyond.' Garrett stepped through the opening, disappearing from sight. The image through the portal rippled like Garrett had passed through water. Skye cringed at the sudden drop in their connection. It was still there but barely. "You next, Skye," Mica said. Skye glanced back at River and Nik, trying not to worry about anything going wrong before stepping through. Seeing the antechamber with Venci's desk and Garrett and Venci waiting, and the immediate return of their connection was a relief. Skye moved farther into the room so he wasn't in the way. As he waited, he checked on the links to his other wing-mates in Underhill. I can't wait until we're all on the same side and I can feel them all. 'Soon,' Mistral assured him. "I guess some time has passed since everyone isn't still here," Garrett said. From this side of the portal, Skye could see the garden and watched Mica make one last scan before he followed Nik and River. When he was through, the view of the garden dimmed until it showed the wall mosaic. "Weird that we could see through from this side, but not the other," Nik said. "I was just wondering about that." Skye turned when he heard and felt someone enter. "You're back!" Corbin glanced at each of them, giving a concerned look. "How long have we been gone?" Mica asked. "An hour, maybe?" Corbin responded. "Everything go okay?" "Yeah, it was not quite two days on the other side." Mica gave Corbin a bro-hug. "Whew. I was worried." "We probably ought to gather everyone, tell them what we learned, and figure out a plan," Garrett said. "Let's use the dining hall. There's enough room and chairs for everyone. Have the others gone back to our rooms, Corbin?" Venci asked. "Except for Keeper. No idea where he is." "I'm sure he knows we've returned. We'll need to get word to Lady Telawynn and Arnakkhor as well. We need them. Quanta and his mages too." "Do you need me to get anyone?" Corbin looked at Skye expectantly. "If you could let our wing know. I've been in Quanta's and Arnakkhor's head enough I should be able to mind-speak them. Unless Underhill objects." "Not Lady Telawynn?" River seemed surprised. "I could, but I'm not comfortable doing that. She never gave me permission, and it might feel intrusive." "Yeah, maybe don't anger the Queen Mother," Nik said. "Lesson learned at home, right?" River bumped shoulders with Nik. "Anyway, let's get started. I'm ready to go back, and the sooner we take care of our part, the sooner that can happen," Garrett said. "You could ask Bram or Noud." Corbin made the suggestion before heading toward their rooms. Skye closed his eyes and quickly found Noud, asking him to deliver a message to the Queen Mother. Arnakkhor and Quanta were also easy to find, which Skye found unusual since they weren't wing-mates. Perhaps Underhill was helping? "I'm going to see if there's any food. I didn't take time to eat breakfast before we left." River draped his arm over Nik's shoulders and led him toward the dining hall. "An amazing likeness, isn't it?" Garrett asked. "The things you can do with magic." Skye looked at the new mosaic on the antechamber wall. It did look very much like the royal garden, down to the detailed carving on the torri gate. "Do you think Underhill will change it if we move the portal?" "I think it's more likely it will be moved to a different place. This seems to be an odd location for a doorway. Especially when the room of doors is just a few steps away." Garrett wrapped his arms around Skye, pulling his back into his chest. Skye could feel his wing-mates' curiosity as they all headed to the other room. A quick check showed him that Quanta and Arnakkhor would be on their way soon, and Noud and Bram were accompanying Lady Telawynn. "Ready?" Garrett stepped back. "Give me a second. I'll be in." Skye took a deep breath and closed his eyes. Mistral, I'm not even sure where to start. I'm not sure I can do this. 'We can. Take it one step at a time. The others will help.' Yeah. Skye headed to join the group. He got to the doorway, and when he stepped through... "Awe, come on! Really? You said you wouldn't keep doing this to me! You promised!" Skye shouted into the trees. Shit, shit, shit. He looked at his surroundings and found himself unable to appreciate the beauty or the sounds. He was still too upset at being snatched away. 'We better let Garrett and the others know before they freak out,' Mistral said. Good point. **Guys? Underhill did it again. I'm in Keeper's tree village. I'm okay, other than being miffed. I'll let you know once I know more.** **Fuck, Skye. Do I need to put a leash on you? You've got to fucking stop disappearing,** River growled through their link. **Wasn't my choice.** **How can I protect you if you don't stay with me?** **I'm sorry, River. I'll keep my connection open with Garrett. The rest of you can update the others, and hopefully, I'll be with you soon.** Skye closed his mental connection to the wing. **Love you, babe. Be careful,** **I'll do my best. Love you, Garrett.** Skye stepped toward the familiar red doors, and they opened before he got close enough to grab the handle. Guess it's not like we weren't expected, Skye grumbled to Mistral. He stopped and removed his boots before continuing. The shoji doors were already open. Keeper sat at the low table, pouring tea. "Do join me. I think you need this." Skye thought about responding with snark but figured it was pointless. He sat cross-legged on the cushion and waited for Keeper to finish. The tea smelled wonderful, and as Skye took his first sip, he could feel the tension draining away. "Is it magic?" "Only in the sense that some of the herbs only grow in Underhill. Do you like it?" Keeper sipped from his own cup as he watched Skye. "I do. I thought we agreed you weren't going to kidnap me anymore, now that we're partners." "No need to be dramatic. It was expedient, and we both know if I'd asked you to come here straight away, you'd have refused." Skye opened his mouth to object but felt Mistral's pull. 'Don't bother; he's right.' Skye took another sip and breathed in the aroma. "You're right." He was surprised he'd already finished the first pour. The jittery feeling he had before had calmed, and the tightness in his chest eased. "Here, I think you'll need several." Keeper refilled the small teacup and then stood, stepping out of the room, returning with a couple of bowls on a tray. He set one down in front of Skye, along with a set of chopsticks and a ceramic spoon. "Ramen?" "Of a sort. It will be similar, but the flavors are unique. This is a recipe from one of the other human worlds." Skye looked up at Keeper skeptically. "What? You thought that only those on Earth could invent noodles? Please, Skye. The Universe is vast, and there are so many foods and delicacies that you have yet to experience. Try it. I think you'll be pleased." "Are you going to tell me why you brought me here?" Skye lifted a few of the long noodles, letting them cool before he took a bite. Wow...really good but also different. "Your thoughts are scattered, and you've lost focus. I'm limited in what I can tell you but will do my best to help. Your visit may have been short, but you set many things in motion." "Hopefully that's good." Skye continued with the noodles and broth, still trying to figure out what the flavors were. The seasonings were savory and very tasty, but he couldn't identify them. "Time will tell. What are your priorities?" "Huh?" Skye looked up and had to think for a minute. "Get back to Draga?" 'I think that was the wrong answer,' Mistral whispered, and given Keeper's expression, Skye had to agree. "Try again." Keeper refilled his teacup and sat back, giving Skye an expectant look. Guess I better think about this, Mistral. 'Perhaps think about what we need people on this side to do so we are prepared when we can return?' "First thing would be explaining what happened during our time on Draga and the Emperor's plans. We need Master Mage Quanta to help resolve the alarms on the palace so we can move back and forth. Arnakkhor needs to decide if he'll speak for the dark fae until someone else is chosen. Someone who the dark fae trusts needs to help prepare them and act as their liaison with the Empire. We also need to come up with a way that the elves don't tell everyone that I was the one that made it so they can be bond-mates. I think those are the main ones." Skye waited to see Keeper's reaction. "A good start. I expect your mate's pater will quickly come up with a solution to the elves sharing your involvement, and Underhill will also assist Arnakkhor in his part. Once you've initiated the tasks, I fear you'll be at loose ends." **Does he know Pater? That's kind of creepy, but I can't disagree,** Garrett mentally whispered. "Meaning what?" Skye could tell there was a ton that Keeper wasn't saying even without trying to read him. He agreed with his mate that Keeper always seemed to know too much, and the thought of opening his mind to Underhill's envoy was somewhat terrifying. "You and your wing will have some time to kill as you wait for your time to return. Unlike in the past, time must run concurrently between here and Draga. There will be too much back and forth to do otherwise." Skye finished the noodles and sipped at his tea. Mistral, I have the very strong sense we're being herded again. "You have suggestions?" Skye asked. "First, are you feeling better?" It didn't take Skye long to conclude that he was much calmer and clearer- headed. "Yes, thank you." Keeper nodded. "I can't tell you what you should do, but can suggest possibilities. Perhaps use this gift of time to think, relax, and connect with your wing-mates and Underhill. Spend some time with your grandmother. And certainly, there are those among your group who could use more practice with their magic. Once you return, you will be in a world of chaos." "That's for sure." Skye knew that others being able to bond and the impact of the shifters being brought further under the Empire's control would be huge. Not to mention the media hounding them about where he and his team had been. "I'd also ask that you think about what type of retreat you'd like for your wing. Once the dark fae have moved on, Underhill should have the resources to give you a place that meets all of your wing's needs. It does not have to be part of the hold." "I haven't thought about it." "Are you ready to return to the hold?" "I am. Thank you for the noodles and especially the tea. I think it's one of my new favorites." Keeper bowed. "I'll make sure to send some with you when you return. Along with instructions on how best to brew it for the most effect." "That would be great, thanks." Skye sat to pull on his boots. **Garrett, I'm on my way back. Did you get the sense that Keeper was trying to hint at something without saying it?** Keeper extended an arm pointing to the exit. "The door will take you directly to the hold." He gave a brief bow before stepping back and sliding the screen closed. **He did give some specific suggestions, which seem fairly obvious,** Garrett said. **Why does that worry me?** * Scene 2 * Skye stepped through the door and into Garrett's arms. Immediately pulled into a kiss that left him breathless. **I like that greeting,** Skye said to his mate as he held on for a few extra seconds. "That shit has to stop," River grumbled. Nik smacked River with the back of his hand. "Think again." "Hey!" River rubbed his chest and glared at Nik. "Not the kissing. I meant the disappearing." "May I say you look well for having an unexpected journey," Lady Telawynn said. She was seated at the end of the table nearest Skye and gave him a fond smile. She looked stunning as always, today in shades of deep red that set off her coloring. "Thank you. I'm sorry for delaying everyone." Arnakkhor was the first to laugh before the others joined in. "I believe we can all accept that Underhill does as it pleases, and we are but pieces on the game board." "Scary, but the longer I'm here, the more that is apparent," Quanta added. "I'll get you some food." Venci pushed back in his chair and stood. "No, I'm fine. Keeper fed me when I was there." Skye glanced and saw that those who'd gone with him to Draga were eating but the others not. "He fed you?" River repeated. Skye nodded as he sat in the chair Garrett pulled out for him. "I think he also had me drink an entire pot of that special tea he brews." Skye could feel the weight of Arnakkhor and Lady Telawynn's gazes. The other elves appeared to be shocked. "What?" "Keeper stays very much to himself, and those who've interacted with him have found his presence to be overwhelming and intimidating. He is 'other' and yet you sit down and have tea with him," Lady Telawynn said. "Huh... I can see that, but he's been very gracious to us. Other than the snatching me away part." "What do you mean other? He didn't seem all that different from the other elves we've met," River asked. "You did not find his magic or presence uncomfortable?" Arnakkhor asked. "Not really. I mean he speaks for Underhill, so that's unnerving. Grandma B. seems to think of him fondly and enjoys his visits. I don't think she's bothered. Venci, you probably interacted with him most; what did you think?" "Obviously, his magic is noticeable, but I'm around you and River all the time. And as for intimidating, he doesn't come close to Prince Argos." Venci shuddered. "Yeah, poor Braden," Nik said. "Why? What happened to Braden?" Corbin asked. "Oh, I thought you'd have already talked about our visit." Skye glanced at the others around the table who were shaking their heads. "No, we wanted to wait for you." Garrett rested his hand on Skye's leg and gave a gentle squeeze. "Okay then. I guess I'll start with updates on our wing." Skye started, and the others who'd gone with him added as he recounted their time on Draga. As expected, there were a lot of questions. When the conversation quieted and everyone's curiosity had been satisfied, Skye decided it was time to move on to action. "Quanta, do you have any ideas on how we can alter the security spells at the palace so some of us can pass through?" Skye felt awkward not addressing the other mages who'd crossed with Quanta and Aksel, but he'd only worked with Quanta and Hanan and didn't remember their names. "It's a better question for Greython. He's the one who has been maintaining and overseeing the wardings and spells on the Imperial Palace." Quanta turned to look at one of the silver dragons Skye didn't know well though he knew he'd been training several of his wing-mates. "I have but not alone. Hanan and Henrik have both assisted," Greython said. "Could you alter the spells to ignore those passing through from the portal?" Mica asked. "I don't think it's wise to have an open doorway into the palace. What if someone with ill intent used the portal?" Greython asked. "For now, at least, only a select group can activate that doorway. But it's a good point," Skye agreed. "Could the spell you used be keyed to exempt specific individuals?" Quanta asked. Greython cringed. "It could, Master Quanta; however, it is somewhat intrusive as I'd need something like a strand of hair and..." Skye could feel the sudden spike in tension that filled the room. "Someone want to tell the newbie why that freaked everyone out?" "Something so personal is a direct link that could be used for any number of nefarious purposes. Just as some fae creatures will never reveal their true name. It could be used to give power over the person," Lady Telawynn explained. Skye looked at Quanta, hoping the master mage would say something. "Is there no other way to key the spell for certain individuals?" Garrett asked. "I'm sorry. Not that would be any less intrusive," Greython said. "Once the spell is cast, then the risk is gone, correct?" Skye asked, looking at the mages. "That is true. The hair is added to a vessel and burned in the casting," Quanta said. "Could you spell the caster so they could only use the hair for that specific spell or have someone else there as insurance?" Nik asked. "Either or both." Quanta looked at his mages, and all three nodded. "What if Fionn or Mordish were the mage to assist? I expect that the only people who will need to be included are my wing-mates. Many on the outside know that the master mage, Lady Telawynn and Hanan, Greython, and Henrik came to Underhill, so they'd be expected to return when the main portal reopens. Venci and Jayce also came through once the others were involved, but Venci will have to go back and forth to help Arnakkhor work on the resettlement." Skye knew he was somewhat thinking out loud but wanted an agreeable solution. "I agree with Skye. No offense, Lady Telawynn, but I don't think Father or his security advisors would want others being able to enter the palace grounds in secret," Garrett said. "I'd also rather not carry that burden or ever have the risk of Aksel being questioned," Quanta added. "Seems to me that the wing-mates would be the ones who have to decide if it's worth the risk and what they're willing to accept as insurance," Mica said. "I would agree if both a restrictive spell were cast and Mordish was included in the casting. I fully trust Skye to protect his people; however, Master Mage, neither you nor your mages are part of his wing," Lady Telawynn said. "Master Mage, I would prefer that as well," Greython said. "I should also say that I can only address the security of the palace grounds, not the palace itself. Because I was the one to cast, I can enter the grounds without triggering the spell, but I cannot enter the palace without an express invitation. It was a security precaution that no one caster had all access." "That makes a lot of sense," River said. "The palace isn't an issue. All of my wing-mates are already cleared-" "Not true, bro. The new wing-mates have never been in the palace. Zeus wouldn't recognize them. No idea about any spells." "The spells are interconnected with the palace's artificial intelligence. Unless they had ill intent, they wouldn't be triggered if Zeus accepted them," Quanta said. "If I have to go back and forth to work on the resettlement, I could make sure they are added before you bring them through," Venci said. "Then they only have to be scanned in on their first visit." Skye nodded in agreement then felt Mistral prod him. 'The stones.' "Oh." Skye pulled out the drawstring pouch and tossed it on the table. "Rilien sent spelled stones to pass messages back and forth. That's how we'll communicate as Prince Argos will have someone checking the gate regularly. Quanta, would you mind keeping them safe?" The pouch was passed down the table to the master mage. He poured them out onto the table and smiled. "Something wrong?" Garrett asked. "Not at all. Just proud of my student. I told you Rilien has talent, and I can tell he was the one to create these. Given that it's not something he's been taught, I'm impressed. I can modify them slightly to be more powerful, but it was well done." "We thought we should warn them whenever any of us would be crossing over. Even if the alarms aren't triggered, we don't want anyone getting shot," River said. "I will take point and work with Greython and Mordish to make it happen." Quanta scooped up the stones into the bag and tucked it into his doublet. "Lady Telawynn, Prince Argos asked that I invite you to stay at the palace on your return. Pretty sure that he's hoping you would work with him and the Emperor to make sure everything goes smoothly. They value your opinions," Skye said. She gave a warm smile. "That would be quite the honor. And if given the opportunity to communicate with Prince Argos, please let him know I'd be delighted." Skye grinned, pleased that he could make both the Queen Mother and Pater happy. "Arnakkhor, are you willing to work with me as an intermediary with the Empire and speak for those looking for new homes until you can talk to them directly?" Venci asked. "I am, and Lady Telawynn, I'd also appreciate you being involved if you're willing. Some of this may affect the light fae, and I am very disconnected from the current world." "Of course." Lady Telawynn gave a head bow and then glanced at Skye with a knowing smile. Um...Mistral, any hints on why the look? Did I miss something? 'Not that I heard and I do not suggest trying to read her.' "Is there anything else we need to talk about or get started? Until Venci can start passing back and forth and working on the plans, I think we're in a waiting pattern," Garrett said. "We still need to figure out a way that the elves that were changed don't speak about it once they're on Draga. We don't need that kind of attention," River said. "Keeper said that he thought Pater would come up with a plan." Skye felt all the eyes on him as soon as he finished. "That just gives me chills," Corbin said, visually shuddering. "Imagine if the prince and Underhill figured out how to work together?" "Don't. Don't even think it. You don't know how bad that would be," Nik said, looking terrified. "I gotta agree with my little brother." Garrett squeezed Skye's leg - a little harder than was comfortable. Nik turned and gave Garrett a glare. 'Guess Nik doesn't like being called little,' Mistral said with a snicker. "Arnakkhor and I will work on it as well. I agree that it would be better if others did not know exactly how the elves became compatible," Lady Telawynn said. "I'd appreciate it. If no one else needs us, I'd really like a nap. My body has no idea what time of day it is, and we've been going so fast since we left there has been very little downtime." Skye glanced around at the others and felt the agreement from those who'd gone with him. "We'll keep you updated, Prince Skye." Quanta stood and offered his hand to Aksel. * Scene 3 * Chaz moved in close to Skye and tapped his forehead as they returned to the rooms where the wing had been staying.**Make a point to greet Kibli and Revali. I know you weren't gone long, but they're both freaked. Corbin's been keeping tabs on Kibli, and Revali has stayed glued to my side.** **Will do. Thanks for the heads up.** "We're really glad that everything went well." Jayce dropped onto the couch and tipped his head back. "Still can't believe anyone would try to hurt Gregg." "Makes no sense," Bryan added. "Who is Gregg?" Raphael asked. "A wing-mate, wolf shifter. He's one of those guys that's friendly with everyone," Bryan continued. "Unlike you. I'd have no trouble imagining someone coming after you," Kuai said. "Hey!" Raphael objected. "It's okay, love. Kuai is right. I've pissed off more than my share." "Don't worry about Gregg. Pater's decided he's one of his, so pity anyone who tries anything." River grabbed Nik and pulled him into his arms. "Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I need some shut-eye. I don't think I even got an hour last night...this morning, whatever it was." River pulled Nik back toward their room. "It's midday here if it matters." Gilian sat on the back of the couch and looked at Skye, raising an eyebrow. "What?" "Even after the grove?" Gilian asked, glancing toward the retreating pair. Garrett broke out laughing and was quickly joined by Mica and Venci. "River said it was better on the big comfy bed." Skye shrugged, feeling a blush heat his face. "And you two?" Teak pointed at Skye and Garrett. "Nah, we tried to get some rest. That trip to the 'secret facility' really did a number on my mate." Garrett hugged Skye. "I have a feeling that's not over yet," Corbin said. "Why?" Kibli asked. "I'm sorry. Never mind. I don't understand half of what was said, and I have no idea who you're talking about, so just ignore me." "We will never ignore you. I'll explain things once these two head off to rest." Corbin walked over to Kibli and turned the new wing-member's face to him. "We got you." "Could I listen too. I'm with Kibli." Revali looked nervous. "Of course. You two go rest. Mica, you and Venci should do the same. There's nothing happening here," Chaz said. "If it's still light when we wake up, and if not then tomorrow, I'd like us to introduce our other selves to the new wing-mates. Also it's been a while since Revali got to stretch his wings. I think it would be good for all of us," Skye said. Skye was too tired to care how they reacted. He turned and let Garrett guide him to their room. Odd that Underhill could feel like a safe place to just let go and sleep. 'It's nice knowing that Underhill is watching out for us,' Mistral said. Yeah, still not convinced I totally trust him. Garrett pushed Skye onto the bed, then pulled off his boots and unlaced the vest. "You want to take the pants off?" Garrett asked. "Yeah. You're going to strip too, right?" Skye lifted up on his elbows. Garrett was already pulling off the leather pants. He then helped Skye and tossed the clothing to the side of the bed. He crawled up and kissed Skye, pressing the length of their bodies together. "Sleep now, sex later?" Skye asked. Another deep kiss. "Lots of sex later." Garrett turned Skye so he was spooned against his back. "Love you." "Love you so much." Skye closed his eyes and let sleep take him. * Scene 4 * Skye stretched and reached a hand out to find the bed empty beside him. He listened and heard the sound of the shower. A quick check on his bonds and Skye relaxed. All was good. Or at least no one was upset or calling out to him. He turned his head when he heard his mate approaching. Garrett was in the doorway, gloriously naked. He had a towel around his neck and was braiding his hair. Even as Skye watched, Garrett's cock began to fill out. Garrett looked up and grinned. "Can't blame me for enjoying the view. You are so gorgeous. You feeling better?" Skye asked. "Well, frustrated at the moment. I really miss Dillon. I'll confess that I took him for granted. Now that I have to deal with my hair by myself, I understand all the mumbling and cursing he used to do." "He will again. He loves taking care of you." Garrett smiled as he tied off the braid. He pulled the covers back and climbed onto the bed until he was on his hands and knees straddling Skye. "I don't think I'll ever get used to the idea that you're mine." Skye ran his hands over Garrett's muscled chest, teasing his nipples. His dark golden skin still glistened with moisture. Skye loved how full and round Garrett's pecs were and traced the curve with his fingers, grinning as the nipples plumped and hardened. "Forever and always. And don't get any strange ideas, I'm the lucky one. You are perfect, and just the sight of you makes me crazy with need." Garrett kissed down Skye's neck to that spot that drove him crazy. Garrett nuzzled, licked, and sucked until Skye moaned. Skye gripped Garrett's strong shoulders and let his fingers trail over the biceps that were almost as big as Skye's thighs. "Scared to take you back to Earth. Every man and woman who sees you is going to want you. They'll flirt and proposition, and I might have to kill a few. They won't be able to resist all these finely crafted muscles." "Yeah? Is my pretty dragon jealous?" Garrett lowered his body so their cocks were rubbing against each other. "You're mine." "Uh-huh, I am. And don't forget that goes both ways. You are mine as well. Anyone touches my mate, and they'll have some broken bones." Garrett's growl let Skye know that his dragon, Rett was fully engaged. "Even our wing-mates?" Skye raised an eyebrow and then gasped as Garrett bit one of his nipples. "You know better. Wing-mates are family. They're ours too, and Rett knows they're not a threat. Doesn't your dragon feel the same?" "He does. Mistral also wants you to quit teasing and get inside us." "I like it when everyone can smell me on you and knows I've pumped you full of my dragon seed." Garrett kissed down Skye's stomach. "Even better when they know I returned the favor..." Skye's voice trailed off as Garrett took Skye's cock into his mouth and began sucking. Skye opened himself up to his mate, letting their thoughts, feelings, and the sensations they experienced pass between them. There was nothing he knew of that was more intimate than these times. They shared their bodies and souls. "I love worshipping you. You've put on a lot of muscle since I stole you," Garrett whispered. He moved between Skye's legs, lifting them onto his shoulders. His tongue trailed over Skye's balls, then lower, teasing the delicate skin, getting closer and closer to where Skye wanted him. "Had to make sure I was worthy of my mate." Skye threw his head back when wet heat teased his entrance. Garrett's arms looped around his thighs, spreading him wider and holding him in place. "You were already perfect. Mmmm..." Garrett growled again sending a shiver through Skye. **You're so wet for me.** Duh. Skye wanted to scream at his mate, but Garrett already knew, as confirmed by the rumbling laugh that shook his body. **Get on with it already!** Skye said into Garrett's mind. **Such an impatient dragon. If it makes you feel better, I'm pretty sure I'm even slicker than you. I can feel it running down my legs. Rett really wants this beautiful dick in our ass.** Skye let out an agonized cry of frustration. It must have been enough because the next thing he felt was Garrett's tongue press inside him. He fisted the sheets as Garrett attacked his hole like he was starving for it. It hardly seemed possible, but Garrett's skills had improved. Perhaps it was being able to directly feel the effects. Regardless of how, Skye lost track of time and the ability to think. Mistral purred in satisfaction as he assured Skye he'd remember enough to return the favor to his mate and his wing-mates. "I can't hold out, babe. I need to be inside you." Garrett pulled back and pressed his body against Skye, capturing his mouth in a hard kiss. He pushed Skye's legs wide and began working his way inside Skye's body. "So good," Skye moaned as Garrett filled him. After the rimming and tongue work, Garrett easily slid inside and ground his body into him. His cock sending jolts of pleasure through Skye. Every time he had a dick inside, he again thanked the universe that his dragon change had come with some of the benefits of being born dragon. Even if he didn't get the flutter, the slick, nubs, and extra nerve endings inside took him to a new plateau of pleasure. Dragons truly were made for sex. Garrett was pounding him deep and hard, more so than usual. There was an almost desperate need to his thrusting, and it was quickly sending Skye over the top. Feeling their combined senses was always a high, but at the moment, he felt like he was soaring. With Mistral's prodding and assistance, Skye pulled his magic and immediately felt Garrett's respond. He used his abilities to tease Garrett's nipples and prostate making his mate's thrusting even more erratic. Intertwining their magic, he held it, waiting... "FUCK!" Garrett cried out, signaling Skye to release the magic before his own orgasm took him. Skye couldn't think of words to describe the overwhelming pleasure that flooded him and made him fly. Garrett's dragon seed filled him with burning heat and caused his body to spurt again and again. Vaguely aware of the loud cries of pleasure echoing in the room, everything else ceased to exist. No sound, no smells, everything blindingly white... * Scene 5 * Waking up wrapped around Garrett was one of Skye's very favorite things. "Wow." Garrett let out a deep sigh. "I think I might know how some of our new wing-brothers felt. Don't recall ever passing out from sex before." Skye couldn't help the laugh that snuck out. "You think that's funny?" Garrett grumbled. "No. Just reminded again how weird my life is. If it makes you feel better, I'm pretty sure I passed out too. And so worth it." Skye stared at the ceiling for a few minutes. "We need to make sure we have more time for just us. I love our wing and don't misunderstand, I'll admit the sex is awesome, but nothing beats just you and me letting go." Garrett chuckled. "My dragon just threatened me and said I had to be honest. Rett and I agree with you, but I gotta say it's hard for a dragon to admit. Maybe it's because you're a platinum..." "We still don't know much. Either way, it makes me happy that it worked out this way. I can't stop taking care of our wing, but you're the one I couldn't live without." Garrett turned and pulled Skye into a kiss. "You ready to let our dragons out?" Skye asked. "More than. Rett really wants to meet the new wing-mates, and I think it would be good for all of us. The new guys need to get comfortable being around our other forms." "I wonder if any of them will ever be interested in learning how to ride." Skye turned as he was climbing out of bed and smacked Garrett's ass. "Not that kind of ride!" "Sorry, Jhaeros came to mind... Revali has already had the pleasure, but I'm not sure he'd remember it well or as a positive. Raphael has at least seen us in dragon form, as has Jhaeros." Skye groaned and then stood and stretched. "I'm most worried about Mattekin and Kibli. Kibli seems to be as skittish as Revali, and Mattekin is a stag. Aren't they considered prey?" "Yes and no. As a shifter, others should recognize them and avoid them. But non-shifter predators would certainly consider them so." "I think it's important for Raphael to meet Bryan's dragon as well. It will help their bond." Garrett stopped what he was doing, and he looked sad. "I'm sorry it took so long for me to introduce you to Rett. That was thoughtless and irresponsible. I knew better..." Skye stood and pulled Garrett into his arms. "We all make mistakes. Me more than most. I think it worked out just fine, and I'm not sure I would have been ready." They kissed before cleaning up and getting dressed. Skye was the first out the door and stopped when he reached the common room as his wing- mates stood and applauded. "What?" Skye was confused. "Definitely a ten, big bro." River lifted the ceramic cup he was drinking from as if toasting. That was when Skye realized what this was about, and his face heated. "Um...Sorry." "No, no, it's quite all right. It was a great teaching opportunity for our new wing-mates." Venci tone did not match his words. Nor did the eye roll. Skye did a quick search and saw a huge grin on Jhaeros's face. Revali looked very uncomfortable, and Kibli refused to meet his eyes. His face was buried in Corbin's side at the moment. **Corbin, is he okay?** **Embarrassed and confused. You made him cum in his pants again.** "Oh, God." Skye's voice wasn't loud, but shifter hearing made that irrelevant. "Soooooo... Anyone interested in making a trek outside and shifting?" Garrett came to Skye's rescue. "It's still just late afternoon. Plenty of time for a nice flight and meeting the new guys." "And the rest of us?" Gilian's look would do an angry Pater proud. Skye was impressed she could put that much disdain in her expression alone. "You can ride. You're pretty good at that." Garrett's face was full-on smirk, and Skye face palmed. **What ARE you doing? We are not to ever speak of what happened in the delea grove with Gilian. EVER!** **Why not-** Garrett's thoughts were interrupted. "That would be good. It would show the others they have nothing to fear," Mica interposed. Skye was glad Mica stepped in and noticed everyone rousing to head outside the hold. He waited until Chaz was close. "You might want to talk to Revali and Kibli beforehand. At least warn them," Skye whispered. Chaz raised an eyebrow. "Whatever are you implying?" Skye knew he was teasing, but still. "You, my beautiful, sexy were-dagger are scary." "You mean fucking scary," River said as he brushed past Skye. "Hm. That sure wasn't your response the first time you rode me." Chaz followed River laughing to himself. What is it with these people, Mistral? You'd think they had sex on the brain. 'I believe he was referring to our rescue. When you were drugged and had to be carried out through the tunnels?' Oh, that. Skye blushed again. He glanced around the common room and realized that all of his wing seemed to be joining them. Mica and Corbin were the only others left, and they were obviously waiting for Skye and Garrett to leave first. "Should I reach out to Bram and Noud? I know they don't shift and aren't technically part of the wing, but it seems odd to leave them out," Skye asked. "No reason not to," Garrett said. "What about Arnakkhor?" "He's meeting with all of the fae leaders to update them on your visit and what happens next." Mica stepped in closer and pointed to the door. "Shit. I forgot to mention the bio-comms and symbiots to Arnakkhor." Skye turned a worried look to Garrett. "Don't worry. That would probably have been too much all at once. I think he'll be meeting with them regularly until they leave. Let's ease them into this." Garrett draped his arm over Skye's shoulders as they followed the others down the halls that would lead them outside. They exited the hold and stood on the edge of the forest, grouping into a circle around Mica. The sounds of birds and animals in the forest filled the air. "Gilian, any suggestions on where we should go? Maybe the clearing where we took Revali?" Mica asked. "Too small for the whole wing. There's a large meadow beyond where they set up the tents for the celebration. It's only a few minutes farther to walk. It's also the opposite direction from the farms, so we don't have to worry about the dragons scaring the animals." "We're not going near the delea grove, are we?" Skye didn't want to be anywhere near that place for the foreseeable future. "There's a path we can take that will keep us away from the grove." "Unless Underhill wants us there," Nik helpfully added. River gave him a playful smack and a glare. "You're messing with my Zen." "I would have thought Underhill was done with that since Skye agreed to the deal, but then he whisked him off again without warning, so..." Jayce said. "Exactly. I'm not quite ready to trust," Corbin grumbled. Gilian took the lead, and the rest fell in behind. The path was only wide enough for two people side-by-side at most. Skye looked up into the canopy, hoping to spot some of the animals or birds making all the noise. Mistral, the forest looks much lusher and healthier than on our first trip. Maybe even more than it did a day or two ago. 'It thrums with magic as well.' Knowing that Mica and Corbin were forever diligent, Skye allowed himself the luxury of gawking at the world around him and not paying too much attention to anything else. Garrett kept him on the path and was there to grab him if he stumbled. He caught glimpses of the birds' bright foliage as they flitted from tree to tree. Skye thought he saw other movement and flashes of color as branches shook, but he couldn't make anything out for certain. "It's sort of like jungle, but not." Skye stared at a vivid red flower that was as big as the span of his arms. "Nothing in Underhill looks quite right if you ask me. And even though the elves swear those won't eat us, a flower should not track you and turn as if it's about to grab you," Corbin grumbled. "Raphael said those are sensitive to magic. That's why it turns," Skye said but had to agree it was creepy and made him want to walk faster. "I promise I'll warn you if there's anything dangerous," Raphael called back. "Most of the carnivorous plants are kept away from the paths. I'll also make sure Gil or I point out any of the sneaky ones." "What the fuck do you mean, sneaky ones?" River shouted. Gilian and Raphael both laughed while the other faces Skye could see looked concerned. The walk was longer than Skye expected but also enjoyable since he didn't often have the luxury of just looking around and absorbing the strange world around him. "Whoa! This looks really familiar," River said, drawing Skye's attention from the trees. The meadow ahead of them appeared to be very similar, if not the same, as the one they crossed to reach Keeper's grove. "Wonder how big it is this time?" Skye looked at the mountain in the distance and remembered how long it took to get close. "Shouldn't matter since we'll be flying, and I certainly have no plans on dropping in for a visit." River moved farther into the field and turned, looking back at them. "How are we doing this?" Everyone turned their attention on Skye. "Um..." Skye thought for a moment. Other than giving everyone a chance to meet our other forms, this is also a good opportunity for a stretch. "How about if the dragons shift one by one and greet the newer wing-mates? We can take turns and maybe keep a dragon on the ground to guard along with Chaz. Revali could also take his eagle form and fly with us. Teak, it's your call on either riding or staying on the ground." "What about Mattekin? Shouldn't he shift too?" Nik asked. "Whenever he's ready. I think it would be good for the stag to meet the dragons and know they're not a threat, but that's up to you, Mattekin." "They won't eat us, will they?" Kibli asked, glancing nervously around the group. "No, Kibli. Shifters keep their sense of self and will know you, regardless of the form they take. We can also recognize other shifters, so there's no accidental eating of someone who happens to be in a form that 'could' be food." Garrett gave a meaningful look at Mattekin. "Does anyone want a ride? I know we don't have the saddles and harnesses with us, but you're still safe," Corbin asked. "I would as long as we're okay not leaving an elf on the ground." Gilian sent a glare at Garrett as if warning him away from any innuendo. His response was to laugh. "Do you think maybe I could ride on you, Bryan," Raphael asked quietly. "Of course!" Bryan agreed enthusiastically. "I'd like to fly," Teak said. "I don't care which dragon." "Why? Don't you have wings and fly on your own?" Jhaeros asked. "Yes, but I can't fly as fast or as high as a dragon." "When we return to Draga, I'll ask Colonel Bianchi to give riding lessons to anyone who wants to learn. It would at least make you more comfortable, and you'd have the extra security of the riding tack." Skye watched for a reaction and kept his shields down enough to know if anyone started to panic. "Skye, I'd like to move the group farther into the meadow. That way, we'll see if anyone is approaching, and once we have dragons in the air, we can better protect those remaining," Mica said. The group followed Mica until he was happy with the distance between them and the forest. Skye moved to stand with Kibli, Jhaeros, Revali, and Mattekin. "You're not going to shift?" Mattekin asked. "I'll wait until you've met all the others." Skye opened his telepathy with the wing so they could speak mind-to-mind. While he knew dragons could speak in their other form, he thought it might be rather unnerving for a first meeting. "Everyone. May I suggest that you move behind the group when you undress and shift? I know most of you aren't modest, but I wouldn't want anyone getting distracted and focusing on sexy times rather than why we're here." "You're talking mostly about yourself, right, bro?" River teased. "I won't deny that most of you cause a reaction when I see you naked." Skye blushed. "Jayce, you go first, then Kuai," Mica said. They only waited a minute or two until Jayce's mind voice called. **You can turn around now.** The gold lumbered toward them, the ground shaking with each step. Jayce's dragon scales were bright gold like Garrett's, but instead of blue, his accents were purple. When the light caught it just right, it looked like he was bejeweled with amethysts. "Goddess!" Kibli squeaked and backed into Skye. "Beautiful, isn't he?" Skye put a reassuring hand on Kibli's shoulder and pushed calming magic into the half-dwarf. "You sure he won't eat me. Maybe tell him dwarves taste really bad, and I'd barely be a snack." Jayce's dragon huffed in laughter and crouched low, so his head rested on the ground. "He can hear you, Kibli. I know you might not be ready yet, but you can also speak mind-to-mind. And I promise none of the dragons will eat you. Let's get closer, and you can pet him." Skye led Kibli until they were in arms' length of the dragon, with Jhaeros and Revali following close on his heels. "You can pet their snout, or what really feels good is if you rub between their brows or along the ridges over their eyes." Skye demonstrated and then stepped back so the others could get closer. Kibli jumped when Jayce took a deep breath. His eyes went wide, and he turned to Skye. "It's okay. Dragons have a very strong sense of smell, and he's letting his dragon get to know the three of you." Jhaeros and Revali seemed to be very comfortable, and Jhaeros even went so far as to wrap his arms across Jayce's snout. "He's really big." Revali rubbed his hand along Jayce. "Pretty standard for a gold," Garrett said. "The golds are usually the largest, followed by silvers, then copper, and bronze. The chromas vary but usually, similar to silvers or coppers." Revali turned to look at Skye. "But you were a lot bigger, and so was River." Garrett laughed. "Platinums are in a category by themselves, and yeah, they're big." Jayce took a good sniff of the new wing-mates and even got pets from Mattekin. He'd held back, but Skye suspected that curiosity finally got the best of him. Kuai was up next and as he came around in front of the group elicited gasps and wide eyes. "One of these dragons is not like the others..." River sang. "I don't think they'll get it, River," Skye said. "There are many types of dragon, though the most common ones look more like Jayce," Venci added. "You might as well know now. There's a fair bit of prejudice in the empire, and since the golds hold the most power, they've pushed for the belief that they are superior." "But it's not true. Kuai is a Chinese golden dragon." Skye led them up to Kuai. His body was more serpentine, long and slender, with four legs ending in felid-like paws. His base color was bright gold, but he had scattered jewel-tone scales in shades of blue and green. "How does he fly without wings?" Kibli asked, not even hesitating to pet Kuai's brow. "Magic," Garrett answered. "What's also really cool is Kuai is totally silent when he flies." Skye remembered back to their training exercises at the cabin when he had to get past a patrolling Kuai-who could sneak up on him at any moment. They got through all the dragons successfully. No one freaked out, and no one was eaten, not even nibbled. Skye was the only dragon remaining who hadn't greeted them, but he wanted to wait until he could introduce them to Chaz. That was the shift that worried him most. River was scary and intimidating but didn't produce the gut-level fear that the were-dagger did. "Aren't you going to shift, Skye?" Gilian asked. "After they meet Chaz. Any of you thought more about taking a ride?" Skye asked. "I still want to," Raphael said. Skye turned to the others. Mattekin looked up to see the dragons circling in the sky. "I think someday, maybe. I've got to build up my courage first." "I'd like to, but I want to fly on my own today. I need to stretch my wings," Revali said, grinning. "Maybe when we have saddles and something to hold onto," Jhaeros replied. Skye could feel Kibli's nervousness so didn't push for a response. "Chaz is the last one to shift. He is a were-dagger and if you haven't seen one before, they can be a little scary. Just remember that it is still Chaz. When we're back on Draga, we have other shifters in the wing as well, including a wolf, a bear, and a panther." Skye turned to Chaz. **Go for it.** Skye stepped out in front of the others and turned to face them. He knew the moment Chaz was behind him. Not only could he sense his wing-mate, the expressions greeting him were a mix of shock and fear. Chaz snuffled the back of Skye's neck and head-butted him, knocking him forward. "Quit! You're going to make them nervous." Skye wrapped his arm under Chaz's neck and pulled him close. "See, it's still Chaz." "Don't think a headlock is going to work, Skye." Mattekin's voice wasn't nearly as confident as his words. "Nah, I'm just loving on him." "Is he going to eat us?" Kibli asked, moving behind Jhaeros and Revali. "No. I promise you're safe." Skye trailed his hand down Chaz's neck and was pleased when Revali moved close. "You can pet him," Skye encouraged. Revali let out a squeak when Chaz nuzzled into his hair. "He's scent-oriented like the dragons." Revali laughed, and a smile lit his face as he began petting the were- dagger in earnest. It was enough to bring the other three closer. "Didn't you say you rode on Chaz? How? These spines are sharp!" Mattekin ran his fingers along one of the sharp appendages that ran down the were- dagger's back. "He can fold them down," Skye explained, and Chaz was kind enough to demonstrate. "Huh. They almost disappear." Mattekin ran his hands over Chaz's flank. Probably noting that the were-dagger was about the same size as his stag. After they'd all greeted Chaz, Skye realized it was his turn. "After I shift and introduce you to Mistral then we can bring Bryan back down to pick you up, Raphael. And Garrett will carry Teak. That's also the time for you to shift Revali. Maybe you too, Mattekin. Chaz will stay on the ground for now to keep you company. That is, unless you've changed your mind about going for a ride." "I haven't, and I can't imagine many creatures wanting to deal with Chaz or the dragons circling overhead," Mattekin said. 'Maybe we can at least get Kibli to climb on our back. Even if he doesn't want to fly,' Mistral whispered. "You ready?" Skye asked. It didn't take him long to shift, and he gave control over to Mistral. **Can you all hear me?** Skye mind-spoke, knowing that his dragon voice was rather loud and disconcerting. Kibli clutched his head, eyes wide and mouth hanging open. "It's okay, Kibli. Remember, Skye and the others can speak to us in our head," Jhaeros said, putting an arm over Kibli's shoulders. Skye was surprised that he, of the wing-mates was the one to comfort Kibli. Maybe being half dark elf Jhaeros felt some connection to him. "Goddess..." Kibli whispered. "Yeah, huge but not as scary as River," Revali said. "They can't really do it here, I guess, but it's so cool when they breathe fire," Raphael said. **We're not taking any chances with offending Underhill.** Mistral lowered their head, so it was resting on the ground. It was about as much as they could offer to be less intimidating. **Come on, get close. I need to scent you.** Raphael was the first to greet Skye and Mistral took in his scent with satisfaction, from both the bond to Skye and to his wing-mate Bryan. Revali was next and wrapped himself around Skye's snout. Jhaeros moved in and ran his hand over Skye's brow. "You will have to share," Mattekin said as he pulled Kibli up to join them. 'Ours.' Mistral purred, causing the others to laugh at his rumble. **See, we're not so scary.** Kibli snorted. "Yeah, you are. But at least I see you in your dragon's eyes, and I can feel you." He tapped his chest. "That's the bond we share," Gilian said. "You'll always be able to feel your wing-mates' presence, but Skye's is the strongest." **Kibli, do you want to at least climb on my back to see what it feels like?** "No thanks. Pretty sure my feet were meant to stay on the ground." Kibli backed away as if Skye was going to scoop him up. 'Give him time. We'll eventually get him to fly with us,' Mistral said. **Gilian, you okay riding with me?** **Are you serious?** She was the only one who'd responded telepathically and Skye felt a wave of pride. **Very.** "I'll show you how it's done, Raphael. You and Bryan are going to need to practice," Gilian teased as she ran up Skye's flank and leaped onto his back as if she'd been doing it for years. "Okay, I'm impressed," Raphael admitted. **Bryan! Time to come pick up your elf,** Skye shouted to his wing-mate. **Garrett, you need to pick up Teak.** Mistral, you're sure you can keep Gilian safe? 'Of course. I could keep Kibli safe too, but Gilian's trained and practiced with us. It will take no effort at all.' **Ready, Gilian? We're going to take off.** **So ready.** Gilian pressed her legs into his sides. Mistral turned away from the others, took a few running steps, and leaped into the air. His wings spread and flapped a few times, catching the air and lifting them up. Gilian shouted with joy as they flew higher. Within seconds, Garrett's Rett, with Teak on his back, fell into formation at their right wing. Rett was the largest of the golds and a magnificent dragon in his own right. Mistral turned to look to his left and saw River's Storm fall in at his left wing. He knew Corbin flew above and slightly ahead of them. They'd already agreed that Mica and Jayce would stay back to guard the others. Mistral banked to make a circle around where the others stood watching on the ground. Skye was pleased to see that Mattekin had shifted but surprised to see Jhaeros on his back. He was even more surprised to see Kibli on Chaz. What's up with that, Mistral? I distinctly remember being told how much Chaz hated having someone on his back. 'Maybe after he carried you, he decided it wasn't so bad. Either way you can't argue it's a good way to build trust with the half-dwarf.' Raphael was already on Bryan, and the bulky gold dragon was lumbering forward to take off. **Revali, do you want to fly with us or stay close to Mica and Jayce?** **Can I stay with you?** the siren asked. **Of course. Don't hesitate to tell us if you get tired. We can always stop and let you ride on River or Corbin. Okay it's time to fly. Anyone have preference on destination?** Skye sent to the others flying with him. **Let's see if we can find Keeper's grove. I'd like to see it,** Nik sent. **Are we sure that's okay? I, for one, do not want to irritate Underhill,** Venci added. **I think Underhill or Keeper would warn us before we got close if they don't want us approaching. Let's go; I really want you all to see it.** Skye flew toward the mountain in the distance. He sensed Bryan catch up to them and join the wing. Mistral climbed higher, and Skye could feel his dragon's joy at being able to let loose again. Even though they'd flown while on hell world, it wasn't the same. This was for pleasure with very little chance of threats. Mistral kept a cautious eye out for Revali. They weren't yet sure of his speed or how well he'd keep up with the dragons. So far, he was hanging in, right behind Garrett. Skye concentrated on the others and was pleased to find the dragons equally enjoying the outing. Even Gilian and Raphael seemed to be happier than usual. Though Skye was pretty sure that Raphael being with his mate and sharing this new experience was enjoying it more than anyone. 'Why is the field so empty?' Mistral asked. I have no idea. **Gilian or Raphael, Mistral wants to know why the fields below are so empty. We haven't seen any signs of life since we left the forest.** **We were told that when the magic faded, many of the herd animals died out. They took those that survived into the farms where they could be cared for. The birds and smaller creatures weren't as affected,** Raphael answered. **Are there natural predators?** Venci asked. **Not really. The fae are the only real predators. This was long before the dark fae returned to Underhill, so while there are a few who'd prey on the herd animals, it wasn't enough to cause their decline,** Raphael explained. **Maybe the herds will return now that the magic is healing,** Corbin said. **We can hope,** Gilian sent. In the distance, Mistral's keen vision could pick up the unusual grove of trees at the base of the mountain. It appears to be the grove where Keeper lives, Skye thought to his dragon. **Guess you guys weren't kidding when you said they were really tall trees,** Nik sent to the group. **Are we flying over, or do you want to avoid the grove?** Corbin asked. Since he was somewhat in the lead, it was a good question. 'Circle it and then decide,' Mistral said. 'I want to get a good look from above.' **Circle to the South, Corbin. Mistral wants to check it out. If it looks safe, we'll fly over as well.** Skye was as curious as his dragon and hoped they'd be able to show the others the village in the treetops. Seeing the grove from above gave Skye a sense of awe at the sheer size of the unusual trees. The Underhill version of skyscrapers. Each one magnificent with a massive canopy of thick golden-green foliage. **You know...seeing it from above, I think it's a lot bigger than a grove. This might count as a forest,** River sent as they began their circuit. **I've heard of the trees, but I don't remember having seen them in person,** Gilian sent. **Me either. And I thought I'd seen most of Underhill,** Raphael added. **But it's not all that far from the hold,** Nik said. **Are they considered sacred? Perhaps there is magic keeping the elves away. If this is Keeper's domain, it wouldn't be illogical.** Venci's dragon Prada was one of the smallest of their wing. He was fine-boned and graceful with coppery scales that glowed in the sunlight like a smoldering fire. 'River is right. The forest is much bigger than I expected, and the foliage is dense enough you can't see anything below. Underhill could hide a lot in there. I'm not sure we'll be able to see his village.' Mistral continued to fly along the edge of the trees. They had reached the foot of the mountain that seemed to rise up out of the golden forest. By the time they had completely circled, Skye was ready for a closer look. Mistral guided them over the trees and kept a watchful eye for any signs. 'Skye, look. Isn't that Keeper?' **Skye, I don't remember a helicopter pad from our visit,** River sent. Skye guessed the others had spotted what Mistral had. And while he was pretty sure they didn't have helicopters in Underhill, that was what it looked like. As they got closer, they could see Keeper wave. **I'm totally guessing, but on Draga, that would be a pad for a dragon to land and take off,** Garrett conjectured. **Skye?** Keeper's voice echoed in Skye's mind. **Keeper. I hope we are not disturbing you,** Skye responded. **Not at all; it is a rare sight to see a wing of dragons flying in the sky. I must say it makes an impressive show.** **Is that a landing pad?** Skye decided he might as well ask. **It is. I thought it would be much more convenient when you needed to visit than traipsing across land. No need to stop today. You'll need to return soon. Oh, and Skye. The magic will start manifesting soon in the dark fae. Be extra careful.** **What?** Skye asked. **Safe flight, I'll see you again soon.** Keeper walked to the edge of the platform and seemed to disappear. It wasn't until they were almost on top of it that he could see the stairway winding down into the canopy. **Did anyone else hear Keeper?** Skye asked. The response was a clear "no" from his wing. **He said it was time for us to return. Not sure if it was a suggestion or a warning, so let's not take chances.** * Scene 6 * Skye leaned in the doorway as Garrett finished cleaning up for dinner. "I have no idea, Skye. Don't know why he couldn't tell you more." "Manifesting magic could mean lots of things and not all of them good." He agreed that the fae were too cryptic, and it was getting old. "Any more thoughts on Bram and Noud?" "I think you have to trust your gut. I understand that your magic hasn't recognized them as wing-mates, but you've said several times that there's something 'more.' I think we can trust them, and even if they can enter the garden, Zeus would still know if they entered the palace." Skye sighed. "I always seem to have more questions than answers." "Quanta is gathering the materials himself, correct?" "He is. Mordish suggested it as further insurance. The spellcaster won't know which one belongs to whom. Not important for this spell, and it prevents him from using it for anything else. That on top of the spell Quanta will cast and Mordish's oversight, I feel good about it. Though, I'll need to tell Quanta to get a hair from Bram and Noud as well. I think he's gathered all the others." "It's happening quickly. I didn't expect them to already place a message stone," Garrett said. "Quanta wants them to cross over and cast the spell tonight. Then Venci can visit at will to work on the plans for the dark fae." Skye paused. "We need to think of a way to thank or reward Venci. He's taken on so many things during this adventure." "And done them all well. We're lucky he came to our wing. You ready for food?" Garrett asked. "Very, flying makes me super hungry." Skye was surprised to find almost everyone already seated at the table. The chair at the end closest to the door and the one next to it were left open. "Get some food; it's amazing as always," Jayce said. "They have your favorite roasted meat, Skye." "I've got his favorite meat right here." Garrett grabbed his crotch and did an exaggerated thrust. "I swear, I am NOT related to him," Nik groaned, and River laughed. "That's okay, Garrett. I love variety, and many of my favorites are all in this room." Skye put his hand on his mate's chest and batted his eyes, giving his best attempt at sweet and innocent. "Slam!" River shouted as he punched a fist in the air. "You go, bro!" Skye felt some of his tension ease as the room broke into laughter and conversation. He was a little embarrassed at the heaping plate he brought back to the table then noticed that most of the others had more than one plate in front of them. "Refueling after flying takes a lot of food," Corbin said with a grin. "Almost as much as sex," River added. Nik gave him a playful punch before digging back in. "Thank you for taking me with you." Revali looked up from his plate and met Skye's eyes. "Of course. I'm sorry we didn't get you out sooner. I promise we'll try and get you out every day that we can. I'm guessing that you're used to flying pretty regularly?" "A few times a day. Both for patrolling around the mountain and hunting for food. There were a lot of mouths to feed, and since I was bigger, I had better luck," Revali said. Skye noticed that Revali was moving stiffly and cringing occasionally. "I'm guessing you were their best hunter." "I don't think the sirens would ever admit that I was good at anything, but thank you," Revali said. Skye brushed against Corbin's mind. **Hey, you know how to give a massage, right? I know Venci's been trained, but he's already got too much on his plate, and it looks like Revali is suffering.** **I'm no professional, but I've had to help out more than a few mates over the years. Combat went really hard on the new guys. And I'd be glad to take care of him. I'll ask Chaz to be there too. Revali seems to trust him more than the rest of us,** Corbin sent. The food was amazing as always, and while the roasted meat was his favorite, Skye was still afraid to ask what it was. Some things were better left unknown. He glanced down the table and saw that not only had Bram and Noud joined them but Aksel and Master Mage Quanta as well. That's also when it registered that Aksel was a dragon, and Skye hadn't included him. "Aksel, I am so sorry! I never thought to invite you when we went flying." Skye's outburst silenced the table, and all eyes turned to him. "That's quite alright, Prince Skye. I've been helping Quanta prepare for tonight, so I wouldn't have been able to join anyway. Perhaps another day?" A note of hope was in Aksel's voice. "Of course. If you haven't had the chance, Underhill is a beautiful place to fly. And I expect that Revali won't be the only one taking to the air each day." "Bram and Noud, we were disappointed that you weren't able to join us," Garrett said. They glanced at each other before Bram responded. "Lady Telawynn asked us to accompany her when she went with Arnakkhor to see the dwarves." "Is there a problem?" They had Mica's attention now. Another odd glance between the two elves. "It didn't have anything to do with Kibli. Oisin and Itheral joined us as well." Bram now had everyone's attention at the table. 'Skye...' Mistral nudged. No, Mistral, I'm not going to just pull it out of his head. He's getting there, give him time. "They weren't sure what was happening, that's why the odd group. According to Oisin, it seems that one of the younger dwarves has come into some mage powers. It started with him setting fires when he got emotional, and it got worse when Gramthor tried to calm him." "I didn't think any of the dark fae had magic because of hell world," River said. "That was clearly Arnakkhor and Gramthor's belief as well. But Oisin was adamant the dwarf was acting like a mage who just came into his powers. Itheral had to sedate him." "Shit." Everyone turned to Skye. "Sorry, I just remembered something odd that Keeper said. He warned me that the magic would start manifesting soon in the dark fae." The room was silent for several minutes. "In theory, it isn't out of the realm of possibilities," Quanta began. "If there was no magic on hell world, there would have been nothing for a latent mage to tap into. Bring them to Underhill where there's an abundance of magic, and bam, the doors are blown open. You said all the exiles who had mage talents died early on?" "That's what we were told. Inherent talents remained but nothing more," Garrett said. Quanta nodded and turned to Bram. "Was the dwarf relatively young, someone likely born after the exile?" "I believe so," Bram said. "Then I think we should assume there may be more cases," Quanta said. "Why now? They've been here several days," Nik asked. "None of them were in good health. They may need to recover first, and it's likely that it requires extended exposure. Mages don't typically manifest their abilities until puberty, so they have years to absorb and acclimate to the magic." "We'll need to warn Arnakkhor and Lady Telawynn," Skye said. "I'll see Oisin, Fionn, and Mordish tonight when Greython does the spell," Quanta said. "We can talk about options on how to help." "Quanta, I'd like Greython to include Noud and Bram in those he keys for passage," Skye said. "I'll take care of it," Quanta responded. "Are any of us needed for tonight's spell?" Mica asked. "Just Venci. The fewer people involved, the better. The spell casting won't take long once Greython passes through the gate. After it is done, we'll have Venci step through to make sure it worked and leave a message stone. Then, we wait." Skye let out a deep breath. "We do a lot of that." "Speak for yourself," Venci grumbled. "The next several days are going to be hell for some of us. I did not sign up to be in the Emperor's cross- hairs." "But it's for a good cause, and we know you'll do a fantastic job," Garrett said. "How long until the rest of us will have to go through?" Mattekin asked. "We don't know. It's dependent on the Emperor and Prince Argos getting everything ready on their side. They'll tell us when it's time," Skye said. "Until then, I'd like the dragons to return to magic lessons. There's not much else we can do while we wait, and this is the perfect place to train. I also have mages with nothing else to occupy their time. It will keep them out of trouble as well," Quanta said. "Let us know who and where and we'll be there," Skye committed. * Scene 7 * It had been four days since the spell on the palace grounds had been fixed. Venci had been going back to Draga daily, only to return and meet with Arnakkhor, other dark fae leaders, and Lady Telawynn to prepare for the next negotiation session. He looked harried but assured Skye he was fine. It was no surprise to Skye when they'd broached the idea of bio-comms and symbiot implants that they got a mixed response. The night elves were the first to sign on, followed by the dwarves, the gnomes, and the trolls. The group that surprised Skye was the ogres. He didn't really expect that they'd be willing. The hobgoblins were still debating while the goblins gave an emphatic no. It wasn't really an option for banshees. The Slaugh, Red caps, sirens, and goblins didn't want any connection that might allow them to be tracked. Skye felt rather guilty when he learned from Venci that the Emperor's plan was any who wanted to step foot on Draga soil would have a tracker, with the exception of the banshees - being a spirit and all. Venci said they'd implant it as part of the inoculation to protect them from any of Draga's viruses or diseases. It was some solace that Arnakkhor didn't seem to be bothered or worried about it. He had Venci warn the Emperor's team that as magical creatures, they might discover or destroy the trackers. Skye was pretty sure that if Pater was involved, they would have already thought of that and had them tested. "The whole point of this excursion was for you to relax. I can tell from your breathing alone that you're getting yourself worked up about something," Jayce chided. "I'm trying." Skye lay back on the rock and took pleasure in the heat from the sun and the breezes bringing sweet, clean scents on the air. He counted his breaths in and out, trying to push away all his worries about re-homing the fae. Skye was glad that Jayce was with him; he was one of a handful of his wing-mates that seemed to have a stronger bond. They were the ones who helped ground him and let him feel like he could be completely himself. "You think the master mage is going to work us twice as hard tomorrow since he gave us the day off?" Jayce sat with his legs crossed, giving a worried look across the ravine to the forest beyond. "I don't think so. Quanta told me he was very pleased with everyone's progress. I think he gave us a break because it was the only way to get Mattekin to do so. And so you know, the stag's still there and doing fine. I've been keeping my link open to him." "He's struggling a bit. I think he likes being part of the wing but having been somewhat on his own for so long, the sudden connection to so many has him rattled. I noticed that Garrett and River were specifically told they had to continue with their lessons." Skye chuckled. "Quanta said, and I quote 'Garrett's too damned stubborn, and River is too dangerous for them to miss a session.' I think Mica and Corbin were included just because Quanta wanted to keep his mages busy." He sat up, resting his elbows on his knees as he looked over the edge of the rock platform to the stream below. The memory of seeing Mattekin at the stream came back to him. "I think Mattekin's more upset by the prospect of returning to Draga and Capital City than being part of the wing. He's never been outside the fae kingdom." "Are we closer to returning?" Jayce asked. "Venci said we are, maybe as soon as a few days. He doesn't know the specifics but was told that we're waiting on something that's not in our control." Jayce raised an eyebrow and looked at Skye skeptically. Skye snorted. "I looked." A blush warmed his face. "They specifically avoided telling Venci any details, so I couldn't find out. And yes, that worries me, but there's not much we can do about it. Tell me, how do you think the other new wing-mates are doing?" "What? You can't pick that up?" Jayce asked. "I want to hear what you think." "Hm. Raphael is doing great. You'd think he's been part of the wing for a while. Not sure how much of that is his new bond to Bryan. Mattekin, as we already said, is struggling, but he doesn't seem uncomfortable with us, and I know he's hooked up with Mica and Corbin a few times." "Not you?" Skye was surprised. "After the delea grove, I decided to take a break. Not that I don't love my wing-brothers, but that was a lot. I know, I know, what's wrong with me?" Jayce paused. "I've always been more of a quality versus quantity kind of dragon. I'm not in it just for the sex. And before you ask, I know it's not typical, and I've gotten grief from my fellow dragons for years." "No judgment here." Skye held up his hands, palms out. Jayce gave Skye a humored look. "Anyway, Jhaeros is fitting in almost as well as Raphael." He laughed. "I think he has a dragon's soul." "Or at least a dragon's sex drive," Skye added. "Yeah. He's a bundle of energy and ready for the next adventure. Revali is cautious, but as long as Chaz is nearby, he seems content. To my knowledge, he hasn't put moves on anyone, but since he's got a human form, I can tell he likes Teak, as well as you and Garrett." Skye knew that Jayce was leaving out the attraction to himself, which he had to recognize if he picked up on the other. "Not Chaz?" "It's there but different. Chaz seems to make him feel safe. And sadly, that leaves Kibli. He hasn't been around us long, but I'm worried about him. I think his life with the dwarves was worse than he's told us. Pretty sure it was abusive given some of his reactions. I haven't picked up any arousal from him, mostly fear and insecurity." Skye sighed. "You're right. I haven't done a deep dive or anything invasive, but what I've picked up matches. I think it will take a good bit of TLC to bring him around. Not all that different from Christos." "You're always asking about us; how are you?" Jayce asked. Skye stretched out on the rock again, nesting his head in his hands as he watched the birds flying overhead. He knew Revali and Kuai were up there too, but nowhere in sight, and he could feel Bryan and Chaz's presence in the forest behind them. Mistral poked him, reminding Skye that he hadn't answered Jayce's question. "Overwhelmed, worried, wondering constantly how I ended up here. I still pinch myself occasionally to prove that I'm not dreaming. Mistral finds it hysterical." "You've been through a lot." "I guess, but I also have an amazing mate and this group of guys who've become my best friends," Skye said. "Hm. Just friends?" "You're right. More than friends and maybe more than brothers, though my relationship with River has changed as well. I still struggle with the sex at times, not because of any of you, but because of these ideas I have in my head. Mistral tells me he will purge all the stupidity he can, but that comes with a good bit of grumbling and huffing." "And here I was hoping you liked having sex with me." Jayce let out a dramatic sigh, and even knowing he was being baited, Skye couldn't resist responding. "I love having sex with you, even more than many of the others. But if I'm honest with myself, I love the sex with any of the wing-mates and enjoy it despite my messed up head. It has gotten better with time." "So if I tell you that I miss you and would be honored to return to your bed whenever you're ready..." "Then we'll figure out how to make it happen. Now that I answered you, tell me, how are you doing?" Skye asked. "Pretty good. Still in awe that we're in Underhill, and I will admit I never thought I'd get to see or experience half the things we've done. Only thing I'd change is being able to talk to my dads. I miss them, and there's so much I've wanted to share with them," Jayce said. "You're close with your family?" "Very. I have the best dads ever, and I love my brothers. I'd really like you to meet them sometime. I know that's probably not possible..." "Hey, you got to meet my grandma, actually both grandmas, I should be able to meet your dads and-" Skye's words were interrupted by shouts and screams in the forest. Stretching out with his senses, he found several hostile minds. **Chaz, Bryan?** **We're there, but I have no idea what to tell you. I don't even know how to explain it,** Bryan sent. Skye stood and held out a hand to Jayce. "Seriously, you're supposed to stay away from trouble, not head toward it," Jayce scolded. "They might need us." Skye turned his attention skyward and reached out to Kuai and Revali. **Guys, there's trouble of some kind in the forest. Keep your eyes open and be careful. Revali, you stay out of bow range!** **I've got him,** Kuai responded. Skye and Jayce hadn't made it far into the undergrowth when he felt a wave of confusion and horror from Bryan. **Skye, you're not going to believe this...** Bryan's mind voice was shaky and hesitant. **Skye, can you follow our connection?** Chaz asked. **We're on our way,** Skye sent. He knew they were getting close, and then he felt another strong presence nearby. "You don't need to see this, Prince Skye." Keeper stepped onto the path and joined them. "What aren't you telling me?" Skye asked as he continued toward his wing- mates. "There's much I don't tell you. But if you insist." Keeper let his words hang and walked with them. "...but the trees are magic, right? It would be bad to just start hacking away." Bryan's voice carried, letting Skye catch the last of his sentence. "You don't need to do anything," Keeper said as they approached Chaz and Bryan. "But, those elves! They're trapped and being...fuck, I don't know...eaten by the trees!" Bryan exclaimed. Keeper walked up to one of the large trees and ran his hand over the bark of the trunk. That was when Skye got close enough to see what they were talking about. Parts of an elvish face were still visible underneath the bark of the tree. The eyes wide in horror and the mouth already covered. "What?" Skye glanced between his wing-mates and Keeper. "They were warned." Keeper's response was brief and cold. Skye turned to Bryan and Chaz. "We don't know much. There was a group-six of them, all men. They had bows and swords, and we followed for a short distance to see where they were headed," Bryan explained. "They were talking about killing you, Skye." Chaz had a look in his eyes that matched Keeper's. Skye held silent, waiting for them to continue. "They were trying to be quiet, not following the pathway. Then all of a sudden the forest came to life. The trees literally reached out and grabbed them, pulling them into their trunks and..." Bryan paused, his eyes still wide. "We didn't have time to do anything. It happened so quickly. Once the trees grabbed them, they pulled them close and began to swallow them, their bodies melting into the trees. The other elves are." Chaz stopped and gestured to the trees behind them. Now that Skye knew what to look for, he could see signs of legs, arms, and faces being absorbed into the trees. "Keeper, shouldn't we try to help them?" Skye asked. "No, Skye, this is best." Keeper's voice showed no emotion. "Won't it kill them?" Bryan asked. "Eventually." Keeper shrugged and turned to face Skye. "I told you that Underhill would protect you. That doesn't mean you get to decide how that happens." "But if Underhill wanted to stop them, why let them get this far. Maybe a warning or locking them in their rooms," Skye said. "They were given dreams. Warnings of the risks they were taking. We gave them many opportunities to stop or turn back. They chose not to," Keeper said. "Why?" Skye was sure that the image would haunt his nightmares. Keeper turned to look at the face, now only the eyes showed. "They didn't want change. Didn't want their children mated to dragons. These are the elders who locked up their sons to keep them from the grove. Since that proved unsuccessful, they thought killing you would stop things from moving forward." Keeper turned back to Skye. "Underhill wants and needs change. These foolish elves not only threatened you, they threatened the very future of the fae and Underhill. So don't feel this is your fault." "Are they already dead?" Skye asked, feeling Mistral's strong presence wrapped around him. "Not yet. They have time to reconsider their views. Underhill will know if it's a true and honest change and release them. But I'm afraid from what is in their minds, that is an unlikely outcome." "So we're supposed to, what? Just walk away?" Chaz asked. "Yes. Consider the matter resolved." Keeper looked at Skye. "Our objective is to keep you safe and help where we can to ensure your success." Keeper gave a bow and then walked away into the forest. "Well, fuck! Can we like, move away from here?" Bryan gave a nervous glance at the tree. Fortunately there was no longer any sign of the elves who'd been captured. I am really freakin' glad that they couldn't scream for long, Mistral. I'm not sure I could have handled that on top of the look in their eyes. Skye shuddered and turned, letting Chaz lead them back toward the hold. A strong arm wrapped around his shoulders and pulled him close. Skye was glad for Jayce's company and put his arm around the gold's waist in return. "Maybe we'll just forget to include this part when we write down our adventures," Jayce whispered. Skye laughed. He really needed that. "What are we calling it? To there and back again?" Skye teased. "Nah, that's been used. Maybe something like a dragon's holiday?" "Oh, my God! What kind of vacations did you take as a kid? You know, maybe I don't want to meet your dads after all." Skye laughed again. Knowing that Jayce was trying to distract him and lighten the mood helped more than his wing-mate knew. * Scene 8 * Skye stood for a moment, staring at the house, the huge wrap-around porch, and the little signs that so reminded him of Earth. He still got a little homesick, but each day it seemed to get better, and the thought of having to give up his wing-mates? No, he'd never miss it that much. "Are you going to stand there forever? Come on, bro! There's bound to be pie or cookies, and you're holding me back," River complained. "Did I hear you right, young man? You just came to see me for my baking?" Grandma B. scolded through the screen door. She swung it open and stepped out on the porch, putting her hands on her hips while giving River the look. "Of course not! I came to see my favorite Grandma B. Now, if you also happen to have cookies..." River attempted to bat his eyes and look cute. Skye bent over laughing. "Oh, you, rascal! Get in here!" She grabbed River and wrapped her arms around him in a crushing hug. Skye followed, stepping onto the porch and hugged his grandma as soon as she was done with River. "Hey, Grandma." He bent over and kissed her on the cheek. "We love you. You know that, right?" "I do, but it's still nice hearing," she whispered back. "Now get in the house and let me spoil you. I heard tell; this is your last day here." Skye nodded as he followed them into the front parlor. He still found himself surprised when his grandmother knew what was going on, sometimes with more information or details than he had. "Yeah, the Emperor wants us to bring the new wing-mates over in the middle of the night. Pater wants them settled before the others come through the main portal. From what Venci told us, they've worked out an agreement and a plan," River said. "Which we're not to know about. I mean Venci knows some of it, but the rest of us are in the dark, and neither Arnakkhor nor Lady Telawynn is sharing," Skye added. "I'm surprised you didn't bring your mates with you." Grandma B. sat in an overstuffed chair and gestured to the couch. They both sat. River glanced at Skye before responding. "We were being selfish. We wanted to spend time with you-just the two of us." "You're welcome anytime." "Thank you. It's...we're not sure when we'll be able to come back." Skye blurted out in a rush. "Understandable, but I'm not going anywhere, and Keeper assures me I've got a good while yet." She leaned forward conspiratorially. "That elvish ancestry comes in handy for some things." River snickered. "Yeah. Surprise, surprise. And we were stoked when we found out we had a vampire as an ancestor. Er, well, I guess he became a vampire after, but anyhoo." "Must have been on your father's side." Grandma B. said it as if it was a family skeleton that was not to be discussed. "Nah. He's been really good to me. He's even come to my rescue a few times. River hasn't had the chance to spend time with him, but my experiences have been good." "Oh, I'm just teasing you, dear. I'm pretty sure we've had some real doozies in our family tree." "And now we're adding dragons. Bet most people can't claim that. But...huh, wonder what they'll say at the next family reunion..." River looked off as if pondering all the possibilities. Grandma B. laughed. "You boys would certainly liven things up, but I'm afraid my last family reunion was long ago. I doubt many of my generation are still around." "We're glad you are," Skye said. "Are you really happy here, or did you say that just to make us feel better?" "My goodness, taking off the gloves now, are we?" She turned to River. "Are you being a bad influence? Skye was always the polite, well-mannered one. Tut tut. And yes, dear, I was being honest. I still miss your grandfather terribly, but I've made friends, and I have my boys to care for. Now, I have you two as well. I think things are looking pretty good." "Wait. You and Keeper aren't...you know, not..." River gave his grandmother a look that had Skye wondering if his brother was trying to read her thoughts. Either that or he was in pain. "No, River. We're very good friends." She leaned forward again and glanced as if checking to see if anyone was listening. "Also...I'm pretty sure I don't have the bits and pieces he likes best." She sat back and winked. River laughed and smacked his knee, turning to look at Skye. "I told you he wanted in Venci's pants!" "River!" Skye gave his best attempt at the "chill" look, his eyes tracking to his grandmother. "I'm too old to shock, Skye. Trust me. Live around elves as long as I have, and there's not much you haven't seen." "Is there anything we can do for you to make things better?" Skye asked. "You can help me eat some pie. Sadly I think I made too many, and I'd hate for it to go to waste. Other than that, I always enjoy your company. I also wouldn't mind visits from any of your handsome men. Don't get me wrong, the elves are pretty, but they don't fire my furnace like those dragons of yours. And, oh my, that young Jayce." Grandma B. fanned herself as she blushed. Skye smiled as he followed River and his grandmother into the kitchen. He'd been having similar thoughts about Jayce of late. With everything that was happening and trying to help the new guys adjust, there hadn't been an opportunity to follow up. "Would you like a glass of milk with your pie?" Grandma B. asked. "Please," River and Skye said. Skye saw an odd leather scroll tied with a cord lying on the table. "What's this?" "What's what, dear?" Grandma B. turned to look at them, glasses in hand. "Oh, that. Keeper brought it. Said to give it to you when you were here. Go on, open it up." "It's not dangerous or magicked or something?" Skye asked. "He didn't say it was." Grandma B. set the glasses of milk in front of them. Skye reached out with his magic and used the spell Quanta had taught him. He whispered it, hoping it wasn't a mistake to not set a protective circle. A glow came from inside, shining out around the seams. Does that make sense to you, Mistral? 'Maybe it will when we open it up.' Skye untied the cord and rolled out the oiled leather. It was bigger than he first thought and saw that it had a number of pockets, several of which appeared to be holding knives of some sort and things he didn't recognize. Maybe that was why his spell didn't work, there were too many objects. Skye carefully pulled out what looked like a dagger, marveling at the workmanship on the handle. When the blade came into view, he let out a gasp. "Wow, bro. That's elvish steel." River's hand moved out of sight, and he came back holding up the blade Skye had seen him use before when they cut the spelled amulet from the rogue. "It is but it also has runes carved into it." Skye tried to read them, and while he got a sense of the intent, the runes themselves seemed to blur. "Mine doesn't glow either. This is the one Gilian gave me. I thought she gave some elvish blades to you, too." "How about you set them aside for now and eat your pie." Grandma B. set the plates down in front of them and then got one for herself and sat at the end of the table. "Did he say anything about this?" Skye tapped the leather case. "Not really. He said it was a gift and that you'd know what to do with it." "Not fair, I didn't get anything," River grumbled. "It's not your birthday yet, is it? I believe Skye's was several days ago." "Huh. I forgot all about it. I guess we probably missed it with all the time differences between here and Draga," Skye said. River took a bite of pie and moaned. "Good?" Skye looked down and saw that it was berry, but not dragon berry this time. "So good." River moaned again. "When you're done with your pie, I have something for you too, Skye." "Thank you. But I gotta say I'm not sure why Keeper thought I'd know what these were for." Maybe if we ask Quanta, or even Lady Telawynn, Skye thought. They took their time to savor the pie, and all too soon, it was gone. "I think too much of your baking would spoil me," Skye said. "Says you. I like being spoiled," River countered. "Thank you, it's nice to have my baking appreciated by my favorite boys. Before I forget, I have some cookies to send back with you for the others." Grandma B. stood and pulled out a cloth covered basket and handed it to Skye. "I could carry it," River offered. "And no one else would get one. I think we'll let Skye carry it." Grandma B. gave River a fond smile. "Fine." She stepped out of the room and returned with a package wrapped in fabric and tied off with a ribbon. "I'm sorry, Skye. They don't have wrapping paper on this side of the veil. I had to improvise." Skye untied the ribbon and pulled away the fabric to find a thick book. "My Wish For You" was embossed on the cover, and when Skye opened it, he realized it was more like a scrapbook with handwritten notes. He glanced up at Grandma B., hoping she'd explain. "Your mother made that for you when you were born and kept it up to date until she passed. It's similar to a baby book, but the idea was that your mother would write down her thoughts, wishes, and dreams for you. Somehow when your parents passed, it ended up with me, and as you know, I had no way to get it to you." Skye flipped farther through the book and read some of his mother's inscriptions and notes until he couldn't see through the tears. It was so personal, and each was written to him as if he'd be the only one to read it. "Thank you," Skye choked. Grandma B. leaned down and kissed the top of his head. "She'd have wanted you to have it." "Um...Grandma B.," River started to say. "Hush, dear. This is for Skye's special day. Is it your birthday yet?" "Well, no. But I was wondering-" Grandma B. pressed a finger over River's lips. "Guess you'll just have to come back for a visit on YOUR birthday to find out." Even through Skye's tears, he managed a smile at seeing River sulk. "I'll treasure it," Skye said. Grandma B. sat at the table again, leaning her elbows on the table. "I should tell you some of the adventures your momma used to get into. She was very much like River, to tell the truth. Blunt as blunt could be, couldn't waste time talking around something if there was a quicker way to get there. Well anyway, one day she woke up with the idea that she was going to be a princess, but not the fancy dress and tiara kind. She was determined she was going to learn how to use a sword and rescue herself a prince. So..." Skye and River listened to Grandma B. until they had no choice but return to the hold. After lots of hugs and some tears, they said their goodbyes, promising to return as soon as they could. * Scene 9 * "I don't think we missed anything." Skye glanced around the room one more time. "Aren't you going to take the other leathers? You left several sets. What if you get bored and want a different color?" Garrett asked. "Ha ha. I think they're best left here. Can you imagine Pater's face if I started wearing these every day?" "What about my opinion? I think you look hot." Garrett gave Skye a steamy once over. "Stop. We don't have time for that." Skye picked up the leather satchel from the bed and checked to make sure the roll of blades and the tea Keeper had given him were there before he followed Garrett into the common room. The empty basket from Grandma B. still sat on the table. It hadn't taken any time at all for his wing-mates to polish off the cookies. "I think we're the last ones out." Garrett opened the door and led them to the antechamber where the others were waiting. "Quanta, Aksel, you didn't have to get up in the middle of the night," Skye said. "It wasn't a problem. We'll figure out those blades when I get back to Draga. Sorry we didn't have time last night," Quanta said. "You sure you're going to be okay? It could be a few days before they open the other portal," Garrett said. "We will. It serves no purpose for us to go back earlier-" Quanta began. "Other than letting our sons know we're not dead," Aksel inserted. "They'll be fine. Probably haven't even noticed we were gone, and we told them we were going to Underhill." Quanta turned back to Skye. "We'll be plenty busy helping with those coming into their powers. There were two more since last night." Shit, Mistral, what if Jhaeros or Kibli? 'Ask him,' Mistral responded. "Quanta, what do we do if one of ours shows signs?" Skye knew it was pointless to keep his voice down. But he whispered anyway. "It shouldn't be a problem. The dwarf was an unusual case. Most have manifested like any mage coming into his power. There will be others at the palace who know what to do and worst case take him to the Mage Halls." Skye let out his breath and nodded. "We can do that. At least some of us will be back when they open the other portal. Appearances and all. I know Venci and Jayce were seen by a number of people entering Underhill, and I don't know what the decision was on the rest of us." "Then we'll see you soon. Good luck." Quanta stepped back into Aksel's arms. Everyone was watching Skye as he approached the portal. "Are we ready?" "Ready or not, we need to go," Garrett reminded him. Skye smiled to himself as he saw Venci clutching his duffel. His missing clothing had shown up the night before. Mattekin looked like he was going to the gallows and the other new wing-mates looked scared. "It's going to be okay, guys. You're not doing this alone." Skye turned to the mosaic and pulled his magic. He placed his hand on the image of the torii gate and felt the responding hum as it came to life. "Everyone have their buddy?" River asked. "Don't want anyone getting lost and Teak, no wandering off. Stay with the group!" Skye was so grateful for his brother. "Alright guys, you know your order, and just like River said, take your partner's hand. Let's do this. Once you're through, move to the other side of the bridge and wait. We're doing this together," Mica directed. I'm glad we put him in charge, Mistral. End Chapter 57 | (Characters included below) Please donate to Nifty!
