Dragon's Tears Chapter 1 The worst thing about living in a big city is knowing that out of the millions of people that surround you every day, none of them are like you. That's the thought that went through my head that morning as I set off for work. I know what you're gonna tell me, that no one suffers alone. And for usual problems, I'd agree. But what I'm talking about, well, it's not really a problem. It just is. Ok, let me lay some background for you so you know what's going on. My name is Brenten Tine. My family originally hails from Ireland. I know you're probably thinking what does that matter, it's 2009. Well, in my life, it's very important. You see, my family isn't just a family, we're also a clan. If you want to get technical, my name is really Brenten of Tine. Ok, before you go off thinking we're in a cult or something, I should probably explain that too. My clan, that is to say my family and I, aren't just humans. Actually, our human form is our secondary form. We only have it so we can blend in with the rest of the world. We're actually dragons. Dragons originated around Ireland in the early centuries to protect the humans from malevolent forces. Yeah, that's a whole other thing, but I guess I kind of have to fill you in on the basics of it. Back then magic existed. Not the kind of magic that kids read about today in books like "Harry Potter," but real magic. Herbs were used to bring about certain mind sets, thus allowing the magic to flow through the people who had the innate ability to harness and control it. And as with everything, there were two sides to the magic, both good and bad; so the dragon was created to protect the humans from magic, and the creatures that magic can bring forth. Dragons have an average life-span of 150 years, and can only mate with other dragons. When we are in our human form, we're sterile, which is a good thing! Trust me; you do not want little half-dragons running around. There's only one way to kill a dragon, and no, I'm not telling you what it is. Besides, it wouldn't do you any good. When we do transform into our original selves, we transfer to a different plain of being. On this plain, only dragons exist. I think this was something that the goddesses changed after the world had lost magic, but I'm not for certain as I wasn't alive when the real battles were going on. Something tells me that they didn't want to kill us off. We were pretty much doing that on our own. There are four clans of dragons, each named after an element. There's my clan, Tine, which is named after fire; the Aeris clan, which is named after air; the Jagi clan, named after ice; and the Erde clan, named after earth. The Aeris and Erde clans were killed off during battles with each other. Each clan felt it was their duty to protect the world, and when they encountered a dragon from another clan, would try to kill it. Maybe the goddesses thought we'd eventually kill each other off, but that's not how it happened. The Jagi and Tine clans separated, going to opposite ends of Ireland. If they happened to meet up in the middle, it was ignored. When the new world was founded my clan moved with the settlers. So we were now in a new land, and magic was still thriving. The Tine clan became the protectors of what would become North America. The times were slowly changing and the people were changing with them. Within a short 200 years, magic was dead in the new land. This was not our doing. Well, not entirely. We never attacked the witches or sorcerers, just what they created. People began to believe in other things, and the herbs continued to grow, connected to the earth. I'll fast forward you here to a short 50 years ago. Word had spread through the country that a very rich and prominent family was moving over from Ireland. The Jagi family was no longer satisfied with their lives and sought something new. We knew they didn't forget that we had come over here, but something didn't seem right. From what I've been told of our clan history, a treaty was struck, dividing the United States in half; the Tine clan keeping the East Cost to Illinois, and the Jagi clan the rest of the way to the end of Alaska/Hawaii. For 50 years, that seemed to work fine, until two years before I was born. There's actually a lore story that they've written, but I'll spare you having to try and read it. Basically, the story goes like this (in modern English): Two Christmas' before you were born, one of Jagi broke the treaty. They not only crossed the Peace Line, but killed one of our own. High Council from both clans screamed Treason, but this killer would not stop. For two years our clan went into hiding, only coming out to work, and the kids to go to school. We had learned to blend perfectly at the time, so it wasn't as hard as one may think. But dragons have a way, an innate knowledge, of knowing when they've encountered another mythical being; so still many of us were killed. We didn't dare retaliate, as we didn't know how the Jagi would respond. While we were used to this land for longer than they, they're numbers were greater than ours. It was finally my older brother who set off in the middle of the night, alone to attempt to stop this killer, or to die trying. As I told you, there is only one way to kill a dragon. And my brother succeeded, but in that success also forfeited his own life. Elric Tine will always be a hero to me, even though I never knew him. He died on my birthday. After that, things went back to being peaceful among the two clans, both living on their respective sides of the country. Now, let me take you back to present day. Things were still decent between the two clans, but none of us had ever met, as we weren't allowed to cross the peace line. This is why the hairs in my neck bristled when I felt another dragon in my presence. I knew all the dragons in my family; all 1,700 cousins and numerous aunts and uncles. But the feeling I was getting was foreign to me. I glanced around and saw nothing out of the ordinary, so I went about my way, going to work. The feeling in my stomach continued to grow tighter the further I walked. That's when I saw him. He couldn't have been any older than 13 years old. He was lying on the sidewalk, his arms draped over his stomach as if he hadn't eaten in a week, and to be honest, he looked like he hadn't eaten in as long or longer. I had never seen this kid before, and knew deep in my heart of hearts that he was a Jagi. After everything I had been told about them, and to stay away if I ever encountered one, I couldn't help myself from seeing if he was ok. I slowly made my way towards him, keeping my mind clear, ready to transform if I needed to. When I reached him, I bent down slowly. "Gortaíonn tú?" I knew it was a stupid question, asking if he was hurt, but I couldn't be like the other millions of people in this city and just walk by. His eyes met mine and my breath stopped. They were the most radiant green I had ever seen. Despite how ragged and dirty he was, his eyes were clear. Briefly my mind registered attack, but quickly subsided when he shook his head. "Are you hungry?" He nodded. I reached out my hand and told him to come with me. We walked in silence to the nearest McDonald's and I ordered him as much food as I could afford. I watched as he shoveled it into his mouth, showing no manners. When he had finished eating, he sat back with a sigh. "Thanks." I nodded. I still wasn't sure what to make of this kid. Did I take him to social services, or to my grandfather, who was the current High Council for the Tine Clan. I sat still, continuing to watch him, my eyes attuned to every movement he made. He pulled his hand out of his hoodie pocket and ran it through his dirty hair. My guess is that it's dark blond, but with so much dirt in it, it looked almost black. He made a face at how sticky his hair was and asked in a shy voice, "Do you have a shower I can use?" No way was I going to leave this kid in my apartment on his own, and until I decided what to do I had to keep an eye on him. I pulled out my cell phone and called in to work, telling them I didn't feel well. Well, it wasn't exactly a lie. My stomach was still in a giant knot. As we left the restaurant, I asked him his name. "I'm Aden Jagi. What's your name?" I stopped. It was confirmed by him... he was from the opposite clan. Do I tell him my real name, or lie? I was never a good liar, "I'm Brenten Tine." I saw the smile flicker on his face, then he lowered his head. "So it is true..." he trailed off. "What's true?" "You guys do exist." I didn't know what to say to that. Of course we existed. "Yeah. What are you doing on this side of the peace line anyway?" "I got kicked out." What the fuck? How does one get kicked out of a clan? He must have done something pretty bad, but not bad enough to be killed. We usually never let one of our own go free. They know too much, so they're either held somewhere, or killed. "What happened?" I asked. "I don't want to talk about it." "Alright man. My apartment's up here." We walked the rest of the way in silence. When we finally reached my building I opened the door for him. We made our way up the stairs and he waited patiently while I unlocked the door. I could see Aden taking a look around, not appraising, just seeing what all was there. I pointed where the bathroom was and told him to throw his clothes into the hallway when he was taking them off so I could take them into the basement to get them cleaned. I may have had a lot of clothes, but nothing that would fit a 13 year old boy that he could wear out in public. As he went into the bathroom, I made my way into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. I had a feeling this was going to be a very long day. I heard the bathroom door open and the thump of his clothes hitting the floor. I sighed to myself and went to grab them. I noticed a hoodie, t- shirt, pants, socks and shoes. There was no underwear. I lightly tapped on the door and heard a squeak. The door opened and I saw his eyes in the gap. I pointed to the clothes and asked if he was forgetting something. "Um. Can't you just get them later?" "Not if you want them clean for when you're done showering." "Oh. Right. Ok" The door shut then opened a second later. Through the gap he handed me a somewhat small pair of white briefs that were stained with dirt and sweat. He smiled shyly and closed the door again. I went down to the laundry room and sat through the task of loading the items into the washer. As I got to his undies, I couldn't help myself. I looked around quickly to make sure that no one else was around, and then buried my face in them. Call me a freak, whatever. There's just something about a boy's underwear that makes me hot. Of course, the boys do too. I didn't see any scoot stains, but there were little drops of yellow from where his pee leaked out after he shook. Before you ask, NO I did not lick them. That's too much, even for me. Finally, when my erection felt like it was going to break off, I threw them into the hot water and closed the lid. When I opened the door to my apartment, I could hear Aden singing. I couldn't make out what song it was, but the kid had a good voice. I walked past the bathroom, into my bedroom, and pulled out some athletic shorts and a t-shirt for Aden to wear. I knew his clothes wouldn't be done for a while as I put them on Extra Long wash. Even then I may have to start it again. I set the clothes on the floor right outside the door and went into the living room and turned on the TV.
