Douglas CHAPTER 63 BOYS BEING BOYS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13 Gordy made it to Kalie's by two. Like Gordy, Kalie had played a soccer game in the morning. She played on a thirteen-and-under girls' team. They won their game 2-1. Kalie was the goal keeper for her team, which was undefeated. Ian and Gretchen went to the game with their parents. They played soccer as well, but neither one had a game scheduled that weekend. Kalie showered in the back house. Both Ian and Gretchen were fascinated by Kalie's naked body, but neither one undressed. They watched her take off her uniform and undergarments in the living room and then watched her as she dried off after she finished showering. Kalie was not shy about her body, and enjoyed showing it off for her cousins. Thirteen-year-old Ian wondered if it was possible to ride a horse with a raging hard-on. Gordy's parents dropped him off at Kalie's house. He knocked on the front door and was greeted by Kalie's mother who told Gordy she was with her cousins in the back house. "Just go through the kitchen and out the back door," Kalie's mother said as if this was Gordy's first visit. Gordy entered the back house just as Kalie slipped on her boxers. He stood and stared at the eleven-year-old girl as she covered her white ass with her brown underpants. Kalie looked at Gordy and grinned. "Hey, it's not like you've never seen me naked before." "I know, but I just wasn't expecting it," Gordy told her. "Are you going to shower? You are all muddy." "I'm just going to get muddier riding so I might as well wait to shower." Gordy looked at the doors to the two bedrooms and the bathroom. "Where can I change?" "How about right here," Ian said. "It worked for Kalie." "That's okay. I'll change in the little bedroom since that's where Kalie said I was going to sleep." Gordy was not ready to do a striptease in front of the two girls and the older boy. "Whatever floats your boat." Kalie had told Ian about what she'd done with Gordy so he didn't understand what his cousin's friend was shy about. Gordy changed quickly and the four were soon out in the barn getting their horses saddled. They were all experienced horseback riders so it didn't take them long to get everything ready. Kalie was glad that Aiden hadn't been able to come for two reasons: there were only four horses available and because of his inexperience it would have taken much longer to get Aiden's horse ready. They rode around the farm for a little over an hour until the light mist that had been falling turned to heavy rain. They quickly returned to the barn drenched and covered with mud. Kalie's mother and father were in the barn when they entered and helped clean and rub down the horses. As soon as the necessary tasks were completed the four kids went to the back house. "Me and Gretchen are going to the main house and use the shower there," Kalie told the boys. "Ian, you and Gordy can shower here." "Since when did you become the boss?" Ian asked. "Since I've been standing here wet and cold. I don't want to have to wait to shower and I know you don't either." "I hate it when she makes sense," Ian told Gordy. After they entered the back house Ian suggested they shower together. Because he was tired and cold, Gordy went along with the older boy's suggestion. Getting naked with Ian was different than doing it when Ian and two girls were just sitting and watching him undress. This time he and Ian were undressing for a definite purpose. Gordy wasn't attacked by shyness because he and Ian were both taking their clothes off together. "Are you gonna sleep with Kalie tonight?" Ian asked as they stood under the warm shower. "No. She said she was sleeping with Gretchen in her bedroom." "Yeah, well, Kalie is good at sneaking out of her bedroom at night. So don't be surprised if she ends up in your bed." "Then I better not sleep naked," Gordy giggled. "Or maybe you should," Ian smirked, "'cuz if she don't sleep with you then maybe I will. I'm so cold I think I'm gonna have to sleep with somebody and it ain't gonna be my sister—not that we don't mess around a little bit." "If we slept together from the start then I wouldn't have to worry about Kalie." "Kalie has a major crush on you, you know." "I know," Gordy blushed. He wasn't ready to reveal that the feeling was mutual. "I'm just scared of sleeping with a girl, especially when everybody promised my parents that nothing like that was gonna happen since only you and me would be in the back house." "Hey, it's cool," Ian assured him. "I know my cousin and let me tell you she's been turning into a horny bitch over the last few months. Do you have any feelings for her?" Gordy nodded shyly. "Good. I think you and her should start going together unless you're gay like some of her other friends." Ian was thinking of Aiden and Mason in particular, even though he'd once watched Aiden make out with Kalie in the back house. "Maybe," Gordy said as Ian shut off the shower. Gordy couldn't help but notice Ian's almost five-inch boner or the dusting of pubes topping it. Gordy wasn't hard, but he could feel things stirring inside of him. The boys dried, got dressed, and went to the main house where dinner was being prepared. After a feast of meat loaf, mashed potatoes, carrots, along with apple pie and ice cream for dessert, the four children went out to the back house. After arguing over what to watch on television, they popped in an animated film titled "The Lonely Dragon". Ian, Gordy, and Kalie sat on the couch while Gretchen took a seat on one of the two overstuffed chairs. As the opening credits started to play, Ian stood up and opened his jeans. "I'm gonna get comfortable," he said to no one in particular as he slid the jeans down and stepped out of them. He made no attempt to cover the bulge in his boxer shorts. Gordy, Kalie, and his sister Gretchen had seen him boned up before—quite a few times in the case of the two girls. This time, Gordy felt his little cock harden inside of his pants. Ian had gone from a big kid with a hard-on in the shower to a horny boy on the couch. "Come on, Gordy, join me. It's a lot nicer watching something on TV without having pants squeezing you." "Okay," Gordy said, "but just my pants, not my underpants." Gordy pulled off his jeans, but adjusted his boxers to try to hide the fact that he had a hard-on as well. He wasn't successful. "Gordy's got a boner," Gretchen pointed out. "That must mean he wants to kiss me or Kalie." "Or me," Ian grinned as he pulled off his t-shirt. "Ian, what are you doing?" Kalie asked. "Getting comfortable, what does it look like?" Gordy looked over at the chair and watched Gretchen take off her jeans. He wasn't even aware that his boner had popped out of the cock hole in his boxers until Kalie pointed it out. When he looked down at his crotch, Gordy turned crimson. He now truly wished he had gone home after dinner. "Who do you want to kiss, Gordy?" Ian asked. "I dunno." Gordy wanted to kiss Kalie, but he didn't want to hurt Gretchen's feelings, so he decided not to commit himself. After all, Gretchen was the first girl he'd ever made out with and she knew it. Deciding that he could always kiss Kalie later, Gordy got off the couch and walked over to the chair. "I'll kiss you," he told Gretchen. "What about me?" Kalie asked. "I thought you liked me." "I do, and I promise I'll kiss you again, but I want to kiss Gretchen again." The chair was big enough for Gordy to squeeze in next to Gretchen. As soon as they adjusted to the space, the two preteens busily began trading spit. Gordy moaned when the eleven-year-old girl put her fingers around his exposed member. He sensed movement on the couch and saw that Kalie and Ian were both stripped down to their underwear and were making out. He had no idea how that happened, but decided to do what they had done. Gordy was starting to feel hot. He stopped kissing long enough to pull off his t-shirt, which was getting damp with sweat. "I want to kiss Gordy for a while," Kalie said as she broke away from her cousin. "I mean, HE IS my boyfriend." When Gordy heard that, he almost coughed into Gretchen's mouth. The two quickly broke their kiss. "You're Kalie's boyfriend?" she asked incredulously. "I'm sorry, I didn't know." Gordy wanted to say that he didn't know either, that this was the first he knew about it, but all he could get out was a short squeak. If I'm Kalie's boyfriend, he thought, then why didn't she tell me? And what am I doing on this chair wearing just my underpants with my dick sticking out while I'm kissing her cousin. "Go kiss Kalie," Gretchen said. "I can jerk off Ian while you make out." Gordy tucked his three-and-a-half-inch boy tool back into his boxers and walked over to the couch. He was confused about what to do next, even though it would probably be something simple like sitting next to Kalie and kissing her. But if he really was her boyfriend, then didn't that make her his girlfriend, and didn't that mean he was supposed to behave differently? He suddenly had no clue about what to do and wished that he and Ian were the only ones in the room. Boys weren't close to being as confusing as girls—you just got each other off and that was all there was to it. As he sat down on the couch, he considered the fact that there was more to the business of messing around—making out with Aiden was often confusing because his feelings for his best friend were confusing. Sometimes he felt like Aiden was more than just a friend. He had no idea what that meant or if Aiden felt the same way about him. Gordy felt like he was on automatic pilot as he leaned in to kiss Kalie. It felt to him that it didn't mean anything, even though it should since he was Kalie's boyfriend. But as soon as their lips touched Gordy's entire outlook changed. It was like he was in Aiden's basement again, seriously making out with Kalie and loving every second of it even though those seconds were frightening. The two eleven-year-olds battled with their tongues, traded spit, felt each other's bare chests, and broke their kiss in order to lick each other's nipples. Kalie was still flat chested, but Gordy could swear that her breasts were swelling just a little bit. "Get naked," Kalie commanded in a hoarse whisper. There was no doubt as to who was in charge between the two preteens. Gordy kicked his boxers off and Kalie did the same. The two paid no attention to Gretchen and Ian, who sat naked together on the other end of the couch. The siblings were watching Gordy and Kalie while Gretchen fondled Ian's teen cock and balls. Gordy's doubts and indecision were gone. His kisses were passionate, his caresses full of feeling, his cock throbbing. As they kissed, Kalie's hand stroked Gordy's cock, rubbing his smooth little ball sack. Gordy rubbed his hand between Kalie's legs, not sure what he was supposed to touch and what he was supposed to do to make a girl feel good. What Gordy did know was that he was on the verge of cumming. He rolled on top of Kalie and humped her belly. It didn't take long for him to elicit another squeak, but this one was a squeak of pleasure instead of a squeak of surprise. "Ewww, you got your stuff on me," Kalie squawked. "Cool," Ian cooed. "Can I see?" Gretchen asked. "I didn't know he could do that. Gordy kisses better than anybody in my school and he even makes cum like my brother. None of my friends at school can make cum." Gretchen looked at the deposit of clear young boy cum on Kalie's belly and smiled. As she was looking, Ian finished himself off, shooting his somewhat thicker cum over his belly and into his scattered pubes. Gretchen started dressing, but Ian, Gordy, and Kalie stayed naked. Kalie, who was still turned on, scooted up next to Gordy. "Do you want to go out?" "Does that mean I'm your boyfriend?" "I called you my boyfriend, didn't I?" "Yeah, but you never asked me if I wanted to be. But, yeah, I guess I can try being your boyfriend." Kalie had been hanging around Gordy and his friends long enough to understand that this was as solid of a commitment as she was going to get. She gave Gordy a quick kiss on his lips. "Can I tell my friends we're going together?" "Yeah, if I can tell mine. I don't know if I want to tell them yet, though. But you can tell your friends." Gordy had a tendency to be shy and naïve. He didn't realize that any secret told to the likes of Autumn or Brittany or Donna was not going to be a secret for long. But even if he had known, he would have made the same decision. He actually had a girlfriend. It was something that made him feel five years older and two feet taller. "You're going to have to let me show you how to make me have one of those orgasms. Girls get them, too, you know," Kalie told Gordy. "I knew that," Gordy said, which was true. "Are you going to show me now?" "No. Me and Gretchen better go to the house; it's getting late. But next time you gotta make me get a girl cum." "Like, making you squirt the way I do?" "No, we just get good feelings," Kalie said in her own youthful, ignorant fashion. Kalie got dressed along with Gretchen. The boys stayed naked. The girls said goodnight and left. "Do you want to sleep with me?" Ian asked Gordy once they were alone. "No. I'm, like really tired and have a lot of stuff to think about." "Just because Kalie is your girlfriend doesn't mean you can't mess around with guys. I have a girlfriend and I mess around with a couple of my friends and a little bit with my sister. It's not like we're married and shit." "I know, but not this time." Gordy was leery of sleeping with Ian. He knew there would be sex involved. Gordy liked Ian, but for him, messing around with guys meant messing around with his best friends. Nobody came into Gordy's bed that night. When he awoke, he wasn't sure if he should be happy or disappointed. But as he thought about it, he was surprised that he felt a sense of disappointment that Kalie never returned to the back house that night. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14 Sunday made the on and off drizzle of Saturday look almost arid. There would be no horseback riding that morning. Kalie called Aiden to give him the news just before Aiden called to ask. "Are you coming over anyway?" Kalie asked. "No. I can spend more time with my overnight friends, now." Aiden was referring to Lenny and Lance who, after all the dust settled the day before, ended up being Aiden's overnight guests. Mason ended up staying with Miles while Gordy was at Kalie's. Kalie was tempted to tell Aiden that she and Gordy were going out together, but she had told Gordy that she would give the news to her friends and not to his friends. She decided to leave that to her new boyfriend. The twins had slept with Aiden in his bed. The three boys traded blow jobs after the tucking in was completed by Phil. When the preteen dry orgasms finally ended, Aiden and Lance had two apiece while Lenny managed to squeeze out three. The boys agreed it had been a great messing around session. They slept naked with Lenny snuggling in to Aiden's left and Lance to his right. The boys showered in the basement the next morning. Larry wasn't surprised to see three naked boys dashing down the stairs and into the basement. Aiden would tell him if he asked that they were simply saving water, but Larry was certain there was more to it than that. "Dang, Lenny, you've got a boner again," Lance giggled as the boys started the two showers. Lenny went under the same showerhead as Aiden. "Yeah, he's a horn dog," Aiden said, using a term that he'd heard often from older boys and that was now a part of the lexicon of him and his friends. "I like being a horn dog," Lenny grinned. He commenced stroking his three-inch erection, making sure his brother and Aiden could see the action. He grabbed the body lotion from its holder, rubbed it on his cock and then really went to town. Watching Lenny go at it got Aiden hard and he followed the lead of his younger friend. They masturbated to orgasm within minutes. Lance played with himself as he watched, getting semi-hard, but he didn't get serious about jerking himself off. "I guess my twin isn't a horn dog," Lenny observed after his dry orgasm. "Yes, I am," Lance protested, "just not this time." "You guys haven't gotten to puberty yet," Aiden pointed out. "You haven't either," Lenny said. "Maybe, maybe not, but I'm almost twelve, which means I'm close." "You were just eleven last month." "I know, but saying I'm almost twelve might mean I'll be shooting cum faster." Aiden knew that wasn't true, but he thought it sounded good. The boys dried off and went upstairs, carrying their towels, but not bothering to cover their junk. "Well, we seem to have expanded from one naked wood elf to three naked wood elves," Phil chuckled. "We're naked boys, not elves," Aiden said in a huff. "Yeah, and we're almost at puberty." The boys bounded up the stairs as Larry and Phil shook their heads. "I can't help but dread the full onset of puberty in those three," Larry said. "They're crazy enough as it is right now." "And we weren't crazy?" Phil asked. "Oh, hell no. We comported ourselves like we knew exactly what we were doing and what we were supposed to do." "And who's the crazy one now?" Phil grinned. The boys came back down and ate breakfast wearing only long t-shirts; a routine that had made itself acceptable during meals, at least for breakfast. "How come you didn't make breakfast?" Lance asked Aiden. "Because Pop was quicker than me." Aiden only fixed breakfast when he was in the mood and volunteered for it. That morning he wasn't in the mood—he wanted to hang with the twins whom he only saw at soccer games and practices. "Oh," Lance said, even though he had a suspicion that wasn't the real reason. The twins left not long after breakfast when their mother picked them up for church. Brenda was sent up the steps to fetch them. "I wish I could spend the night with Aiden," Brenda lamented as her brothers came to the door "You can't, doofus," Lance said. "Because you're a girl and he's a boy," Lenny finished. "But he's cute and I like him because he's nice to me." Phil overheard the little chat from the living room. It was obvious that Brenda was suffering from a total boy crush on Aiden as were her brothers. He smiled to himself as he thought how Aiden seemed to attract crushes from quite a few kids of both genders. After helping clean up the kitchen, Aiden went upstairs and checked the Arizona Fall League website. He saw that Marty's Peoria team had won 7-3. Marty went 1-for-4 with a run scored and had committed an error. The box score indicated it was a throwing error. Aiden was happy that it didn't create a run for the other team. He was just closing the site when his phone rang. He picked it up and saw it was Gordy. They chatted back and forth as Aiden waited for Gordy to reveal what had happened the day before other than riding horses and eating dinner. Gordy finally warmed up enough to talk about the happenings in the back house after dinner. "You humped Kalie and got your cum on her?" Aiden asked with incredulity. Gordy seemed to be getting really serious about making out with girls. "It was just like a drop. I don't make much you know." "Still, she's a girl. I didn't think she would like having cum on her." "She didn't seem to mind." "Did you sleep with anybody?" "Just with little old me. I was really happy." That wasn't entirely true, but Gordy thought it sounded good. "But you and me need to have an overnight so we can mess around again. Best friends should mess around when they can." Gordy surprised Aiden yet again. He never thought he'd hear Gordy confessing that sometimes he liked to overnight so he could mess around. His usual claim was that he and Aiden or his other friends never planned to mess around, it just seemed to happen. After Gordy hung up, Aiden slipped on a pair of briefs, grabbed Horace, and went downstairs to watch the Seahawks with his dads. He wore the briefs because he wanted to cuddle with one or both of them. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 17 Aiden's week at school was plugging along routinely. The only complaint he had was Mr. Lawrence giving him a B on his creative writing paper because he hadn't followed directions. Between periods Aiden took his paper to Mr. Lawrence's desk and argued that he was being creative with the directions and that made his writing creative. "Isn't being creative what the assignment is about?" he argued persuasively. "I think at your age following directions takes priority." "But I have followed directions on everything you make us write like essays and stuff. Writing stories is different. I mean you and my dad talked about that when you gave me a C- on my first creative writing paper." "I didn't give you anything. You earned that grade by writing a story that was different from the one I assigned," Mr. Lawrence said. The assignment had been to tell the story of a person who finds a blank envelope in a field with one thousand dollars in it and what the person spent it on. Aiden wrote his story about a boy who found the envelope Mr. Lawrence described, but he ended up playing detective and finding the person who lost the envelope, whereupon he returned the envelope to its owner. The result of the C- grade was Larry making a visit to the middle school to talk to Aiden's teacher about what constituted creative writing. Larry told Mr. Lawrence that in his opinion the teacher's philosophy worked great for nonfiction assignments but not for fiction. Mr. Lawrence disagreed, but said he would try to give Aiden a little more slack on future assignments. Aiden started getting B's on his creative writing, but he didn't think getting a B on an A paper was what he deserved. On the B paper that had just been handed back, the assignment had been to write a story where somebody gets lost on a family camping trip. He had the family camping trip, only the two boys in his story didn't get lost, everybody just thought they were lost. Instead they found a field about a half-mile from the camping area where they lay on their backs and tried to use their star map to find constellations in the sky. At the end of the story they did get into trouble for not telling their parents where they were going. Aiden would have loved writing that they made out with each other after watching the stars, but knew that wouldn't go over very well with his teacher or his dads. "I gave you the plot to the story and expected you to follow that plot. In other words, I expected you to follow directions." Aiden wanted to explode, but he paused as he had been taught to do by Marty and by his dads. "I had the boys where they didn't belong and their parents got mad and then scared. The boys watched the stars and did some good things while they were alone. I thought it was a good story and I only had two mistakes on it. I think it should be an A." "It wasn't the assignment. Your boys weren't lost." "But everybody thought they were lost. What's the difference?" "Aiden, the discussion is finished. The B stands." "Fine." Aiden carried his paper back to his desk, not at all satisfied with Mr. Lawrence's decision. He wanted to complain to his dads, but that would be whining and he knew he wasn't a whiner. On the other hand, he had shown them the story just like he did all of his stories and they had liked it. He knew they would now want to see his grade. Aiden wasn't going to whine, but he was interested in what his dads would think of his grade. The end result was that Larry and Phil were disappointed with the grade. "You did great, Aiden," Larry told him. "It's a very good story. You did a wonderful job of telling the boy's adventures. I am going to see Mr. Lawrence and express my displeasure with the grade." "No, please don't, pop. I don't want him to think I came home and whined about it." "Well, this is not the first time it's happened. Apparently your teacher and I are having a failure to communicate." "I thought I followed the assignment. It's just they didn't really get lost, even if everybody thought they did." "I'll tell you what. I'll keep this in a file. If there is a repeat, then I reserve the right to have another chat with your teacher. What do you think Phil?" "I can live with that," Phil replied. Phil wanted to go straight to the teacher and give him a piece of his mind about how his insistence on following directions was stifling creativity. He wondered how many students in the class wrote the story to satisfy the teacher instead of writing the story they first conjured up in their minds. He was proud of Aiden for writing his own story while staying loosely within the framework of the assignment. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 18 Thursday found a strange change in Aiden's routine. He had PE seventh period, his last class of the day. Rusty and Russell were both in his class. As he changed out of his PE clothes, he noticed a bit of an altercation between the two boys. "What's with those two?" Aiden asked Miles who was changing next to him. "I dunno. I just know that they seemed okay at lunch," Miles answered. "Rusty won't do what Russell tells him to do," Muddy said. Aiden knew that Muddy was accepted by Russell and his friends which gave him a better perspective. "Why don't you get naked and take a shower?" they overheard Russell say. "It would fit a chicken faggot like you." Muddy was the one to react. He stepped over to Russell and angrily told him to shut his mouth. Muddy's size alone made him intimidating and when he was angry nobody in the sixth grade was willing to stand up to him except for the stupid ones—and Russell ranked in the stupid category. He was ready to say something when he noticed Aiden standing next to Muddy, wearing nothing but socks and white briefs. He was obviously livid. Russell was leerier of Aiden than he was of Muddy. He considered Muddy to be a friend and didn't think he'd want to get into a fight, but he saw Aiden as a loose cannon. "Okay, fine, don't shower. But you better do what I say, or I'll kick your ass." This time Aiden reacted first. He stepped in front of Russell, who was three inches taller, looked up at him and said, "If you kick his ass you'll have to kick my ass too. I'll come after you because you're a butthead." At that point Mr. Harkness, the PE teacher came out of his office and stepped in. He told all of the boys to move away from each other and reminded them that if they got into a fight at school they would be suspended from school. After the last bell rang, Aiden went to his locker and grabbed the books that he needed. After that he looked for Rusty, but couldn't find him. That evening Aiden tried to get his mind on one thing—the Cobras. Getting focused on a game after a day in school, especially one like that day and the business with Rusty and Russell, wasn't easy for him, especially in soccer. Even under the best of conditions he was never able to get into a zone in soccer like he could in baseball. The Cobras knocked off the Monte Bulldogs for the second time. They were up 3-0 at the half and won 5-1 and the game wasn't really that close. Aiden didn't play the last twenty minutes as the bench players finished out the game. Toward the end of the game he swore he had seen Rusty on the sidelines, but he didn't see any sign of him after the game. For a moment Aiden thought he had been hallucinating, but Gordy said he had seen Rusty as well. Everybody noted before the game started that Russell was a no-show. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19 Gordy spent Friday night at Aiden's house and slept in Aiden's bed, naked of course. But, the two boys didn't mess around. They had talked about it knowing it wasn't going to happen. They had to get up early for the Cobra soccer game at Harborview. The parents allowed the sleepover only with the promise by both boys that they would be in bed early. More importantly, they promised to get to sleep early. "Why else would we go to bed early but to sleep?" Aiden asked his dads the night before with all of the innocence he could muster. "First, the two of you could probably talk all night. And you know that we know that on some nights more happens in your bed than talk and sleep," Phil replied. Aiden blushed a deep red. "Sure, like reading to each other," he finally managed to eke out. "Whatever. Just do what's expected and remember what the best policy is." Aiden knew Phil was referring to honesty. "Is this like a test?" "It's whatever you want it to be. Now, quit being contrary and promise to follow the rules or I'll call Gordy's parents and call tomorrow night's little overnight off." Aiden and Gordy enjoyed their evening, especially wrestling naked in the basement after their foosball game. They also enjoyed their shower together in the basement. Yet, even with their little cocks perpetually hard, they never got off. After getting ready for bed, they still had fifteen minutes until lights out. One of the things they talked about was Rusty and his behavior during the week. They had hoped to talk to him at school that day, asking him why he came to the soccer game and what was going on between him and Russell and his little gang. But, Rusty didn't come to school. Aiden was concerned and told Gordy he was thinking about talking to his dads about Rusty. Gordy said to wait until he talked to Rusty on Monday before he said anything. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 20 The drive to Harborview was the longest of the season for the Cobras. Aiden was riding alone with his dads, which was fine with him. Sometimes dad time was as important as friend and teammate time if not more important. This was one of those more important times. Aiden would have preferred to talk the night before, but with Gordy spending the night the opportunity didn't arise. Originally, Gordy was going to ride with Aiden and his dads, but Mason and Brody both needed rides to the game as well as rides home. After the adults dealt with the logistics of the day, both boys were going to be riding with Gordy and his parents. Aiden said he wanted to ride with his dads. Larry and Phil could both tell that something was bothering their son and they had a pretty good idea of what it was. It wasn't often that Aiden turned down riding with his teammates. After they left the house Larry drove out to Highway 12 and turned the Honda west on the highway . Phil opened the conversation. "What's on your mind, kiddo?" Usually Aiden played hard to read, but this time he wanted to tell his dads what he wanted right away so he could concentrate on his upcoming game. "It's about my sperm donor." "How about saying it's about your father." "It's about Keegan." Phil was about to open his mouth to correct Aiden again when he felt a nudge from Larry's elbow. Larry was right, now was not the time to be nitpicking; the boy was troubled about something and that was what needed to be addressed. "How has he managed to get you into a little tizzy? Have you decided not to have lunch with him or what?" "I'll do the lunch because I said I would, but I don't want to ride home with him. I want to ride home with you guys." "Why?" Larry asked. "I don't trust him enough yet. Can you just wait for me somewhere and I'll call you when I'm ready to be picked up?" "We will find some lunch of our own and wait for you," Phil told his son. "But, I'd like you to promise one thing." Larry gave his husband a quick glance. He felt this was not the time to be negotiating. "What?" Aiden asked sullenly. He didn't like his dad attaching strings to his request. He wished his pop was doing the talking because he wouldn't be doing that. "If you change your mind..." "I'm not going to change my mind," Aiden said with forceful finality. "I said IF you change your mind, son. In other words, don't go in there with a closed mind or your lunch will not be very enjoyable." It was obvious Aiden was having second thoughts regarding his lunch decision. "But, if you change your mind, don't hesitate to call and tell us. We'll understand, so don't let your Pop and me be a factor in your decision making." "Whatever that means." "It means, listen to your heart." Aiden nodded and lightened up a little. That piece of advice, whether it came from his dads, from Marty, or another person he trusted, had yet to fail him. "Okay, I promise." The Cobras had defeated the Harborview team 4-0 the first time they played. The results this time weren't much different as they played their way to a 6-2 win. While Aiden didn't always feel connected to the game, he played well, scoring the Cobras' second goal of the game, which broke a 1-1 tie. Keegan was there and this time watched the game from the Cobras' side of the field. Aiden noted that, as promised, he didn't bring Drake with him. One time, when he was on the sidelines, he noticed Keegan and Phil talking about something. He wondered what it was about since he was sure his dads and his sperm donor didn't like each other. After the game was over and the handshaking and fist bumping was completed Keegan walked up to Aiden. "Good game, son," he said. "Thanks." Aiden disagreed as far as his own game was concerned; he knew he could play better. He had trouble focusing before and during the game and he blamed Keegan for that. But his team played a great game, and that was what counted. "Are we still having lunch together?" Keegan asked, fearful that Aiden would be fickle and change his mind. "I said we'd have lunch. But, my dads are going to drive me home so you don't have to drive all the way to Mayfield." Aiden was lying about the reason for the decision, but he didn't want his father to know how he felt. He was still afraid of him. Aiden could see the sudden change in his father's behavior; it was obvious that he wasn't pleased. He pointed to Larry and Phil. "Was this their idea?" he asked harshly. "Nope. It was mine." "I don't believe you. If I'd known I wasn't going to take you home I don't know if I would have driven all the way down here." Aiden looked directly at his father. This man was closer to the person he remembered than the friendly man he talked to at the Lacey soccer game. This man sounded like the kind of person who could grab a belt and swat his bare butt with it. "Fine then, if having lunch with me isn't good enough I'm going home now." Aiden turned and started walking toward his dads, who noticed that things between Keegan and Aiden didn't appear to be developing smoothly. "Wait!" Keegan shouted out, making a grab for his son. Aiden avoided his arm and kept striding away from him. "Please," Keegan added on with obvious reluctance. Larry and Phil both started toward Aiden and Keegan. Aiden stopped and turned. "We're not having lunch. If you don't believe me when I tell you that it was me and not my dads who decided on who I will ride with, then I don't want to be around you." He paused for a moment and went on. "And I did lie to you a little. The reason I told my dads I didn't want to ride home with you wasn't because you had to drive a long way, because I don't give a shit if you did." Aiden made sure to emphasize the word "shit". "I told them I didn't want to ride with you because I didn't trust you. I guess I was right." By then Aiden and his dads had reached each other. Aiden stood next to Larry, who placed his right arm around his son's shoulder. "That's it, hide behind Larry's skirts," Keegan sneered. "Maybe you should have your stuffed animal, too." Keegan turned his gaze to Phil and glared at him. "You said you were happy Aiden wanted to have lunch with me. You lied, you fucker. I'm not taking this lying down, I'll tell you that now. I'm getting my son one way or the other." Larry looked down at Aiden, and then over at Keegan, squeezing the boy's shoulder tighter. "The other thing you could do," Larry said calmly, "is treat your son with respect. You'd be surprised how easy he is to win over when you do. It worked for you a week ago." Keegan thought about apologizing, but realized that at this point it would be an empty gesture. He walked to the parking lot, realizing that once again he'd lost control of the situation to his eleven-year-old son. He wished there was a way he could take off his belt and swat the ungrateful boy's bare ass one more time—that would give him control for sure. It didn't occur to him that the week before, when he'd treated his son with respect and humility, that he had taken control of the meeting and that his son had, at the same time, returned that show of respect. That night, Phil and Larry weren't surprised to have visitors in their bedroom—a gray stuffed donkey and a somewhat depressed young boy. Aiden snuggled up to Phil, draping his arm around his dad's bare chest. "I shouldn't have said the word shit," Aiden said contritely. "True. You got mad and you didn't pause. It wasn't the worst usage of the word shit that I can remember, but you could still learn from it. "Did I do that all wrong?" Aiden asked his dads. "Nope," Larry replied. "Your father has to learn to accept that your decisions are actually yours, and not decisions made by me and your Dad." "Should I try to, like, make up to him?" "You were within your rights. Except for saying shit, you handled things well. And, like your Dad said, it wasn't the worst usage of the word he or I had ever heard." "As someone once told me, don't waste your energy on profanity. Use it only when it has effect. I think that fit what you did, but I would strongly suggest that there is no repeat." "I love you both," Aiden said softly. "I am grateful to have the best dads in the world." He felt Larry's hand slowly rub his bare back and was asleep within seconds. Next: Tween Angst
