The England Trip - Ch. 1 I can't believe that Michael and I have been together for about a year now. We had plans to celebrate our first anniversary together. I couldn't believe how happy being with Michael has made me. It's like all of my loneliness has vanished. Anyway, I didn't expect my mom to come in and throw all of my plans that I had for Michael and me out the window. Mom knocked on my bedroom door. "Come in." I said. Mom came in and sat down at the foot of my bed. Well crap I thought, this must be something big for her to come and sit down on my bed. "Kenny, your dad and I discussed it, we have decided to spend the summer with your grandparents." She said. "You mean Nanna and Pappa?" I asked. "In Hawaii?" "No," she replied. "Your Pepaw and Memaw." "Oh." I said. "So we are going to spend the whole summer in London?" "Yes Kenny." I hated going to London, It was definitely beautiful, but I remember the last time we went I was 8. The only people who were there were all older then me. The only cousins I have around my age couldn't make it that year. I was so bored with out them. "Your dad and I decided that you could bring one friend with us to London." She said. "Can it be Michael?" I asked. "Yes," she said. "If it's ok with Michael's parents." I was happy with that answer and started smiling. Mom started laughing. "Why don't you call him now and ask his parents, so that if he can go we can get him a passport." She said. "We are going to be leaving in two weeks." Mom got up and left. I quickly went to my phone and started dialing Michael's number. "Hello?" Said Mr. Smith. "Hi Mr. Smith." I said, "Is Michael there?" "Yes, hang on Kenny." I heard Mr. Smith put down the phone. "Hey Michael, Kenny is on the phone for you." I heard Michael pick the phone up. "Hey Kenny!" He said. "How are you doing?" "I'm ok." I said. "I know that we were planning on spending our anniversary together, but..." "Don't tell me that you are backing out Kenny." Michael said. "No not at all." I said. "Its just that my pepaw is turning 70 this summer, and my parents are wanting us to go to London the week that school gets out." "How are we going to spend our anniversary together?" Michael asked. "Mom told me that I could bring a friend with me to London." I said. "Would you like to come with me? You have to ask your parents first." "I'll ask them tonight over dinner, and I'll call you back." Michael said. "OK," I replied, "Please don't forget." We hung up the phone and I went to help mom make dinner. "Did you ask Michael about London, Kenny?" Dad asked. "I did," I told him. "He said he's going to ask his parents over dinner and call me back tonight." "Sounds good." He said. "I am sure that your memaw and pepaw would love to meet the Michael person you keep telling them about." He winked at mom when she looked over at him. I went into the kitchen and helped mom make dinner. We had cheese burgers and home made French fries. I set the table for dinner. After we ate, I cleared the table and washed the dishes. I put all of the dishes in the drain and heard the phone in my room ring. "Hello?" I said. "Hey Kenny its Michael" he said. "I asked my parents about the London trip. They said that I could go, if I found out how much it would cost." "Nothing, everything will be paid for." I told him. "We just have to get you a passport so we don't have to leave you in London." We both started laughing. "Hey, depending on how nice it is over there, we both may want to stay." Michael said. "Oops, I forgot my passport in my bag at my house." I was laughing. "Yeah right." I said. "It is really pretty over there, wait until you see all of the castles, and the Museums, oh and the Globe Theater. I know that you love the theater, so I asked my mom if we can take you to see the most famous one of all." "Awesome!" Michael said." I can't wait!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We were all busy for the next few weeks leading us to London. The closer it got to going the happier I got. This was the first time I was allowed to take a friend of mine out of the states. The best part of it was the fact that it was Michael who was the chosen one to go. Dad told me that it was my choice to tell the rest of my family about Mine and Michael's relationship. I told him that I wasn't sure yet if I wanted to be open to them yet or not. "Take your time Kenny." Dad said. "You know your mom and I have your back." "Yes I do." I said. "But I want to protect Michael." "Well as Michael and you both said a year ago to Michael's parents," dad was saying, "as long as the two of you have each other, everything else will be ok." "I know and I still believe that," I was saying, "but, I still feel like it is my responsibility to protect Michael." "I know son, I know." Said dad. "Just take your time, you will have Michael, your mom and me there for you." Mom came into the living room. "Hey Kenny," Mom said. "Tell Michael that his passport came in the mail today." "Yes Ma'am." I said. "Oh while I'm thinking about it, can Michael spend a few days with us before we go to London?" I asked. Mom and dad looked at each other for a bit before they gave me permission to ask him to say with us. Mom told me it would be easier in the long run, if both of us are here already, it will be less hectic on the day we leave for London. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -- The day before the Flight -- "Hey Michael," Mom said, opening the front door. "Kenny is up stairs. Dinner will be ready in about 10 minutes." "Sounds great!" Said Michael. I heard foot steps leading up the stairs. I went to my bedroom door and opened it. "Hey Michael!" I said. "Hey Kenny." He said. He walked in and put his bag down on the bed. He came over to me and gave me a hug. I of course hugged him back and gave him a light kiss on his soft cheek. "I'm looking forward to meeting some of your family Kenny." Michael said. "They don't know about us." Kenny said. "What do you mean?" Asked Michael. "I mean I haven't told any of my family about me and you dating." I said. "Well now is the time to do it." Michael was saying. "You have the support; you have me and your parents." "I know, but I want to protect you." Kenny said. "That's nice," Michael said. "But are you trying to protect me or your self?" "What do you mean?" I asked. "I mean I think it is nice that you are trying to protect me from your family, but do you remember what we told my parents?" Michael stated. "As long as we have each other, no matter what other people say or think really matters." "Yes, and I still believe that." I said. "Then why don't we come clean to your family," Michael was saying. "After all they live on the other side of the world." We both started laughing. Then mom called us down for dinner. We were having pizza and wings. That way we didn't have to clean up such a big mess. "We leave for London in the morning." Mom said. "Our plane departs at 8:30 AM so we will have to wake up at 5:00 AM. We have to be there 2 hours early for the check in process." Dad said. "How long is the flight?" Michael asked. "15 hours and 10 minutes." Said Mom. "We have a layover in Miami also." Said dad. After dinner, Michael and I cleaned up the mess. Mom and dad went to bed and Michael and I took some movies to my room to watch some while we were laying down. I ended up falling to sleep in Michael's arms that night.
