The members of the house had all stayed close together in the great room, just in case there was any news about poor Towns. They had also leaned on each other for much-needed comfort and support. The police had arrived shortly after being called when the young boy had been discovered missing. They had issued an Amber Alert because the security camera footage clearly showed the young boy's abduction. But so far, there had been no leads reported regarding Towns's whereabouts. "Is Towns gonna be okay...?" Taylor ask in a small, sad voice as Tyde cradled the young twin while sitting together on the carpeted floor in front of the large fireplace. "I...I really hope so," the thought of someone hurting his little brother was unbearable to Tyde. He recalled being at the hospital the day the twins were born and holding them for the first time--they seemed so small and helpless, the only thing he had wanted to do at that moment was keep them both safe and be a good big brother. Tyde thought about how may times Towns had crawled into his lap for a cuddle, just like he was now holding Taylor, and his heart broke all over again because the gentle boy wasn't there with them--and he didn't know where to find him or how to bring him home. *** Britany drove her car as fast as she dared through the streets of the small town as she raced back to her trailer. She knew, whatever her brother and Blue Hat had planned for the kid, she had to get back there quickly to put a stop to it. The green Pontiac had barely screeched to a halt in her parking space before she jumped out and ran to her front door--she could already hear the little boy screaming even before she threw open the door. "Get the FUCK away from him!" Britany yelled, upon seeing the scene inside the trailer. Blue Hat had set up a video camera and was pulling the boy out of the cage. The kid clung to the wire mesh walls with all his strength, his blood-curdling screams echoed of the walls of the room. "I ain't gonna hurt him much...just break one of his arms is all..." Blue Hat replied, continuing to climb into the cage to pry loose the boy's small hands from the wire mesh. "I said, get the hell away from him you asshole!" Pulling a stun gun from her purse, Britany pressed the trigger and placed it on the exposed skin at the base of the man's spine. Blue Hat tried to scream through his clenched jaws but only made a loud grunting noise before collapsing unconscious to the bottom of the doggie kennel. She called to the boy, "Come here...he's not gonna hurt you now." Towns had stopped screaming but still clung to the side of the cage and didn't move toward her open arms. "Look kid...you gotta get out of there before he wakes up. I might not be able to stop him next time." Towns slowly released his grip on the wire mesh, he quickly crawled over the man to get away from him and out of the kennel. Britany pushed Blue Hat's legs the rest of the way inside the cage, closed the door, then secured the lock--she knew, without the key, he would be unable to quickly free himself. But she also knew, a full-grown man might be able to eventually break out, so she had to move fast protect herself and the boy. *** On the second day following Towns's disappearance, a package arrived at the church. Inside the group found the little boy's Santa's helper outfit and a handwritten letter. "We have the boy, if you want him back alive, send three-hundred thousand dollars in crypto currency to the account below within one day of receiving this package. If you do not, we will hurt the boy and you will never see his narrow ass alive again." Everyone in the great room was stunned into silence after Monica had read the letter aloud. No one knew what to say and they didn't know what to do. It was Holland who first broke the silence, "I...I think I might know where he is..." *** The local police kicked in the door of Britany's trailer an hour after Holland had made the connection with the ransom letter and his father's sister, Britany. Inside, the officers had discovered the man on the video who had taken the little boy. He had been locked inside a doggie kennel and was attempting to break free. Holland had only heard one other person use the term, `narrow ass,' before in his life and he thought there might be a small chance Britany might somehow be involved--but he had no idea why she would do such a thing to the gentle boy. That is, until his moms informed him she and his father had attempted to extort them for money regarding his adoption. The police officer working with the church family reported they had found the man responsible for the abduction, but the boy was not in the trailer. The police put out an alert to look for Britany with the hopes they would soon find the missing child. *** "You boys should try to get some sleep," Monica spoke calmly to the worried group still gathered in the great room that evening, "...it's been a long two days, we will be sure to wake you if we hear anything about Towns." All of the boys in the house were hesitant to depart the space as long as one of their own was still missing. "Come on guys, let's go..." Ashton's dad encouraged the boys, "...you all need showers and a good night's sleep...get going." The boys reluctantly picked themselves off of the floor and sofas then quietly hugged their parents goodnight before walking silently up the spiral staircase toward the bedrooms, many of them still wearing their Open House outfits. The large walk-in shower could hold four boys at a time so half of them waited in the common area of the bedroom level while the others washed. "Do you think they'll find him soon?" Finn asked Sage as they sat together while they waited their turn in the bathroom. "Yeah, I do..." Sage replied, sounding hopeful, taking Finn's hand in his and interlacing their fingers, "Towns is a tough little kid, he'll be all right until they can locate him." Finn put his head on Sage's shoulder and began to quietly weep for the missing boy. Even though he had not known the young twin all that long, he knew from his time living at the bus station how cruel some people could be to kids and he felt a sweet boy like Towns didn't deserve to be treated that way. "Hey, we just gotta stay positive," Sage said, putting an arm around the boy and hugging him close. *** Cade and Ashton climbed into bed together following their showers and after brushing their teeth. Neither boy felt like doing anything more together than just holding each other for comfort. "I feel so badly for Taylor," Ashton spoke softly once they had snuggled together, "I can't imaging what he's going through right now...him being Towns's twin and all." "I know what you mean...those two are always together. As bad as we feel about Towns being gone, it must be terrible for him." Ashton paused before posing the unspoken question on everyone's mind, "What...what happens if they can't find him before..." he trailed off, not wanting to complete his sentence. Cade hesitated for a long moment, then quietly replied, "I...I honestly don't know." *** The boys had all slept in later than usual the following day before eventually making their way to the dining room for a late-morning meal. A few hours later, Ashton's mom climbed the large spiral staircase leading to the loft to check on the boys. She found them all in the spacious common area sprawled out on bean bags and couches watching a movie as a distraction on the wall-size projector display. It was heart-warming to see how close they had become in such a short time while they waited for any news about little Towns. She noticed her son, Ashton, napping on one of the sofas while holding the other young twin, Taylor, who was also sound asleep laying atop his chest. She was proud of her boy, of all of the boys, for being so thoughtful by looking after Taylor since his twin brother had gone missing. She felt, no matter what happened in the future, they would always be there for him, and each other. During the past few days, the unfortunate tragedy had forged a solid bond between the boys, and between the parents. They were no longer three separate families who had decided to live together in an old, renovated church; they were now one pack, one tribe--one family. *** The cafe waitress placed an order of chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, and a tall glass of cold milk in front of the pretty little girl before serving the woman a burger, fries, and some iced tea. "Is there anything else I can get for y'all...?" "No, thank you," Britany replied, trying to keep her interaction with the perky waitress to a minimum. "I must say, your little girl is just as pretty as can be...you must be a proud mom." Britany smiled but did not respond to the compliment. "Well, just holler if you folks need anything," the waitress spoke cheerfully before walking away from the table. "You're not my mom..." Towns said flatly, staring directly at Britany. "I know that...and keep your voice down. Just...eat your food. We gotta a long trip ahead of us and we won't be stopping very often to eat." Towns was hungry, but he didn't begin eating until he asked a final question, "Are you really gonna take me home?" "Yes," Britany responded with an annoyed tone, "...I told you so, didn't I? You were never supposed to be here in the first place. Now, eat your food...the bus will be leaving soon and we need to be on it." Britany had decided her only option for staying out of prison for years and years would be to return the boy safely to his home then surrender herself to the police--however, she also knew, if she were to be caught traveling with the boy, she would be arrested on the spot and charged with god knows what. The previous day, she had sold her old car for as much money as she could get then purchased two bus tickets to take her and the kid back to the church where he lived. She had also taken the boy shopping for little girl's clothes and a wig so he would be less recognizable. To anyone observing them, they appeared to be just a mother and daughter having a quiet dinner together. The `little girl' wore a cute yellow dress with white stockings and pretty shoes. Her blond hair was tied into a long braid going down her back. Because it was cold outside, she also wore an adorable pink coat to keep her warm. Britany had also changed her look by wearing a plain dress and a similar blond wig to cover her naturally dark hair. `Mother and daughter' quickly finished their lunch before departing for the nearby bus station. *** Towns had dosed off almost immediately after the long bus ride began. Britany could tell the kid was exhausted and needed some sleep. When he fell asleep against her shoulder, she allowed him to put his head in her lap then covered the `boy' with her own coat as he slumbered. Britany had to admit, the kid was cute and was pretty enough to easily pass for a little girl. As she watched over him, she thought about how different her life might have been if she had been able to have children of her own with her ex-husband. They had gotten married immediately after high school and tried to get pregnant right away. As it turned out, getting pregnant was not a problem for her--staying pregnant long enough was something she was unable to do. Each of the miscarriages had taken a toll on her--there had been three before she decided she couldn't bear to loose any more children. Ethan, Emma, and Eric were the names she had picked for her babies who didn't make it. She wanted to remember each of them so she had their names tattooed just above her boobs so she could see them every day. Her young husband had also wanted a large family, they had separated before eventually divorcing, leaving Britany to fill her emotional void with drugs and alcohol. Because she was still young, she began making a living as an `exotic dancer' and had a series of failed relationships with both men and women until time caught up with her. She became too old to make it as a stripper so she started bartending. After losing that job, taking Holland for ransom made perfect sense to her when Otis had suggested it. But now, holding the small boy in her lap, she knew it had been a mistake and wished she could have a `do over.' Britany had always wanted to be a mom since she was a little girl playing with Barbies. She allowed herself a moment to imagine what it would be like if she simply kept the boy with her and raised him as her son, they could go someplace where no one was looking for them and start a life together--but, she knew it was just a silly dream. The boy had a family who were desperate to get him back safely. Plus, he was now old enough to remember them and he would always long to return home. Britany was lost in thought when she too drifted off to sleep. *** "Everyone, please remain seated while we search the bus," the young police officer announced, waking Britany from her nap. They had stopped at a station and the bus was being searched by the police. Britany quickly realized they were probably looking for the boy and was immediately terrified she was about to be arrested. She quickly put on a pair of cheap sunglasses then pretended to also be asleep as the police began walking toward her at the back of the bus. She closed her eyes and prayed their disguises were good enough to fool them. She heard the sound of the police officer's boots as he walked near her then paused by her seat. Britany held her breath, her heart was beating uncontrollably. It wasn't until she heard the footsteps continue did she dare to even take a peak, the officer had turned around then walked back off the bus. Towns stirred in her lap but continued sleeping--without a care in the world. *** Towns had slept all night on Britany's lap, finally waking the following morning when they had to disembark at a station to await their next bus. "I gotta use the bathroom," Towns said, rubbing the sleep from his eyes in the bright sunlight. "Okay, but you need use the girls room, not the boys...do you want me to go with you?" Towns, unfamiliar with using the girls room, didn't know what to expect so he shook his head, `yes,' then held Britany's hand as they walked to the bathroom together. Once inside, Britany helped Towns with his stockings and his dress so he could sit on the toilet without making a mess. Once finished, she helped him wash his hands and face before adjusting his wig to ensure it was straight. "My, what a pretty little girl," an older woman remarked upon walking into the restroom, "...what's your daughter's name, sweetheart?" Britany smiled looking into Towns's pretty blue eyes and said, "Emma." "Well, Emma, you certainly are a darling girl," the woman said warmly before walking into one of the empty restroom stalls. *** "Why did you call me `Emma' in the bathroom?" Towns asked while eating his pancakes for breakfast. Britany paused before responding honestly, "I've always liked that name...and, if I had a little girl, that's what I would name her." "I really like that name," Towns said with a bright smile. Britany also smiled at the adorable little boy. It was the first time she had seen him grin, it made her feel ashamed of herself for getting him wrapped up in this terrible situation. But she knew, the best way to help him--and herself--was to get him back to his family. With any luck, she would have him home by tomorrow, Christmas Eve. *** End of Chapter Four To be continued in Chapter Five Prequels to this story: https://www.nifty.org/nifty/gay/young-friends/finding-holland/ https://www.nifty.org/nifty/gay/young-friends/convincing-cade/ Your feedback is greatly appreciated --> entirelyawesome@protonmail.com Other stories by this Nifty author: https://www.nifty.org/nifty/authors.html#entirelyawesome
