"Then...where have you been all this time?  And...why didn't you come get

His mother's expression changed to one of despondency and regret,
"Cade...I've made a lot of mistakes in my life...and my biggest was

very long story.  I will always regret not being with you and keeping you

Cade didn't know what to say and didn't know how to feel--this sudden

"Listen, if you'd like, we can make time to have a talk later...Sage and
I will be in town all day today," his mother said, "...but I don't want
to make you late for your own adoption ceremony," turning to the judge,
she said, "I'm ready to sign now."

Judge Donnelly passed a single form to the young woman and she quickly
signed her name before passing it back to the judge.

After inspecting the document, Judge Donnelly, also signed the form
before placing it in a folder for Ms. Wright.

"All right, Cade, we can go downstairs and join your family now," Ms.
Wright said, standing to leave, "I will need to return here for another
meeting but I will see you at the ceremony."

"Wait...what happens now...?" Cade asked his mother and brother as he
stood from the table, "...will you both be coming to the adoption
ceremony?"

His mother stood and said, "We didn't come here to interrupt your life,
Cade.  I only wanted to see you again and to let you meet Sage.  That's
why they didn't tell you I was going to be here today.  You have a new
family now...and...this is your special day.  I don't feel we have the
right to be a distraction for you."

"But what if I want you to be there?  Both of you..."

His mother smiled then glanced at Sage, who nodded in agreement, "That
would make us both really happy to be there with you."

"Do you think...I mean...if you're okay with it, I could maybe give you a

"It's okay, mom," Sage said, taking her hand in his, "you did the

"...plus, now we have a chance to spend time together and get to know

"Right...I want to get to know everything about you and be together as
