The trio walked through the metal detector before a police officer gave them each a pat-down search to ensure they were not carrying and prohibited items into the visitor's center. Ms. Wright had been through the process many times during her career with Child Protective Services because so many of the kids who end up in Foster Care do so as a result of a parent, or both, being arrested--for Cade and Sage, this was a new experience. It had been five days since the boys had learned their mother had been arrested for attempting to purchase a large amount heroine from and undercover police officer. Following her arrest, she had requested to have no visitors, but now that she had been sentenced to serve the remainder of her original 20-year sentence in prison for violating the terms of her parole, she knew she would likely be moved to a different city very soon so she decided to allow her boys to see her before she was transferred. "You two boys can take a seat at one of the windows," the large police officer instructed the twins upon arriving to the small visitation room, "...but ma'am, you will have to wait here," he spoke to Ms. Wright who patently waited by the door. Cade and Sage walked to the side of the room with the small booths for speaking to the person on the other side of the transparent divider. Once seated, Cade looked at Sage's anxious face, "You okay...?" "Yeah, I'm fine...I just don't know what to say to her...." "Just say what's on your mind...you might not be able to see her again for a really long time." Just then, a door on the far side opened, the boys saw their mother walk into the room, handcuffed, wearing an orange jumpsuit. To Cade, she looked so young to be in jail as she took a seat at the window then picked up the old-fashioned phone receiver hanging on her side of he the glass wall. Sage picked up the receiver on their side, then spoke quietly, "Hi, mom..." "Hey, baby...thank you for coming to see me." "I...we...really wanted to see you when we found out you got arrested." "Sage, I and so sorry all this happened...I really screwed up this time...and broke my promise to you..." she trailed off, not knowing what more to say to her son. "I know mom...," Sage's voice began to quiver as a preamble to the quickly approaching tears, Cade took his twin brother's hand and held it gently, "I just...miss you so much and they said we can't even give you a hug..." Tears flowed down their mother's cheeks as she placed her hand on the glass--Sage placed his hand opposite hers. "I love you, Sage, and I'm so sorry for letting you down...for letting us both down. It's going to be a long time before I see you again...but I will think about you everyday..." "Oh, Mom..." was all Sage could say before he was no longer able to speak due to the overwhelming grief he was feeling. Cade gave his brother a hug while seated, "It's going to be okay, Sage...we've got each other now...it'll be all right." Cade took the receiver from his brother then spoke to his mother through the glass, "Don't worry about Sage, I'll look after him...he'll be okay." "Thank you, Cade. I am sorry we didn't get to spend much time together..." Cade was uncertain how he felt about his mother at the moment, after unintentional abandoning poor Sage. However, he had a question he'd intended to ask her since they'd met and now seemed like the only time he could do it, "I've been wanting to ask you something...can you tell us about our father...who is he?" She paused momentarily, as if carefully considering the question, then replied, "Your father was a married man when I got pregnant. I never even told him told him about the pregnancy, so he doesn't even know about you...but, now that you are both older, you have a right to know...he teaches at a local college, I know because I still follow him on social media..." She provided the man's name and the address of the university. Cade made note of it then ask, "Why didn't you ever tell him about us...? He might have wanted to meet us." "Like I've told you, I've made a lot of mistakes in my life, Cade...and I know I haven't done right by either of you. All I can say is I'm sorry and I hope someday, you can forgive me. Please take care of your brother, he really needs you now...you both need each other." With that, the visitation time expired and a police officer escorted their mother away. Sage was inconsolable and cried for his mother like a small child--Cade held him tightly and tried to sooth the boy because he could also sense his heartbreak. Ms. Wright drove the boys home but Sage had not spoken a word since leaving the jail. As soon as she wished them well then drove away, Cade began to briskly walk down the sidewalk. "Where...where are you going...?" Sage asked, confused. "To go find him..." "Who...?" "Our dad." *** Sage caught up with his brother as he marched at a sturdy pace, "How are we gonna find him...? We don't know what he looks like." "We know his name and where he works...that's enough for a start." The boys made their way to the nearest bus stop then took the first one going to the campus of the local university. Cade was able to find his name listed as one of the faculty members on the university's website using his phone, he also promptly found his office location. Cade was astonished to know his 'potential' biological father may have been living so close to him all this time and he had never known anything about him. The bus stopped on the grounds of the large campus before the boys disembarked. After finding a campus map, Cade was able to locate the building where the man worked. "Should we have told someone where we are going?" Sage asked, worried, as he trotted to keep up with Cade. "Nah, we won't be gone too long...and besides, if he's not here, we'll just turn around and go back home. Here it is...this is the place." Cade pushed open the glass door to large brick building then began looking at he office numbers. The boys found the office with their so-called father's name on the door, it was located on the second floor of the building. Cade paused to look at Sage before knocking, "Are you okay with everything...? I mean, I know you're still upset about our mom." "I'm okay...I'm just as curious as you are...so, yeah...let's do it." "Whatever happens, we stick together, no matter what...okay?" "Okay." Cade knocked on the door and the boys waited with bated breath. After several seconds, the door was open by a middle-age man with dark hair and very familiar deep-blue eyes. Cade recognized the man from his picture on the university website. "Yes, may I help you...?" "Um, hello...my name is Cade and this is my brother Sage...and...I think we might be your children." *** After being invited into the small office and offered a seat at a cluttered table, the boys relayed the story their mother had told them and how they had come to locate him. The twins were curious to know if what their mother had said was true. "Where is your mother now?" the man asked, clearly taking the boys seriously. "She's in jail, sir," Sage responded, sadly. "So, is it true...are you our father?" Cade asked, directly. The man removed his glasses then ran his hand through his dark graying hair, "I suppose it's possible, I did know your mother 13...no 14 years ago. She and I...well let's just say, I knew her well. But I never knew anything about her being pregnant or having twins." He looked at them both more closely, "I must say, you boys to look very much like my other children...I have a 12-year old son who looks just like the two of you." Searching his cluttered office, he located a picture frame with a young boy's image inside. The twins analyzed the picture and agreed, the boy looked remarkably like them, albeit he had slightly darker hair, but the same distinguishing deep-blue eyes. "Where does he live?" Cade asked. "A few blocks from campus...he lives with his mother. Unfortunately, I don't see him or his brothers often as I travel frequently for my research." "So, you might really be our dad," Cade concluded. The man smiled, "You are very 'convincing' Cade...I said it's possible, a simple DNA test will confirm it...but there's no denying, we do appear to share several familiar traits." "Can we meet him, your son?" Sage asked, with a hopeful expression on his face. "That's going to be up to his mother...as I said, I don't see my children often. But, I will give you the address so you can ask for yourself." *** Cade and Sage stood outside the gorgeous brownstone home then pushed the doorbell near the front door. While the boys waited, they both enjoyed the sweet aroma of warm cakes and pies coming from one of the nearby storefronts. Before leaving the campus, they had agreed to speak to their parents about getting a DNA test so they could know for sure if they were related. However, the pretty boy who answered the door removed all doubt, because the trio looked like they could be triplets. "Hello..." the boy greeted them cheerfully, looking at them like they were selling something. As second blonde-haired boy also appeared from behind the first--to his utter surprise, Cade recognized him immediately.
