All similarities between this story's plot line, characters, names, places, or any other item are purely coincidence David The lunch was pretty good this time. Whoever was cooking knew how to properly make fried chicken and grits. Good grits don't exist outside of Georgia, period. The afternoon workshop was pretty interesting too. Alex, Austin, and I had opted for the one about controversial issues and how we were to try and find ways to reconcile our differences. They went on to say we must accept them regardless of our acceptance of their choices and lifestyles. I don't remember much else from it, but it was interesting to discuss. But now it was time for my favorite part of the day; taking a dip in the lake. I walked up to the beach with Alex and Austin next to me. We placed our towels down on the green and sat around a bit before actually getting in. "So why are we waiting here?" I asked, somewhat confused on why we weren't jumping straight in. "Just to warm up a bit from the air conditioning so that the water feels that much better" Austin replied as he removed his sunglasses. It had actually been cold inside, so this was a nice change, at least for the moment. I leaned back and let the warm rays of the sun in combination with the humidity warm me up. I felt a slight sweat begin to form on my skin. I was thrown out of my tranquil world by loud laughter coming from behind me. I looked back to see David, Nicholas, and a few other boys that looked like jocks walking toward the beach. David was dressed in a neon green and black suit with some billabong logo on it. A black pair of aviators and backwards red hat to cover him summed up his outfit. I thought the hat was stupid, but honestly it all didn't look that bad combined. The rest of his group was dressed about the same. I turned back around and stood up. "So we gonna swim or not?" I asked as I began to head towards the water. Before I knew it Alex and Austin had sprinted ahead and were already on the sand. I took off as fast as I could. My years on track had kicked in and I just managed to get to the water before they could. Alex came up from under the water and threw a huge wall of water at me. "No Fair! You're on track!" Alex yelled before dipping back under the surface. Moments later I felt something grab my legs and pulled me under. I was grabbed from behind in a tight embrace and brought back up to the surface only to be thrown a few feet away. Alex quickly leapt back onto me and we began wrestling. I barely managed to escape and held up my hands in the air to indicate I needed a break. I was panting hard from this. "No fair" I said in between breaths "you're on swim team!" I yelled as I began to regain control of my breath. "Well it's least fair cause I'm not on any of those teams" Austin lamented. I looked over at Alex who nodded. A wicked grin formed on our faces as we began to move towards Austin. It was only then Austin realized what we were doing. His eyes went wide as he began trying to run across the water. "No, No, No, NO! Screw you guys!" He said trying to outrun us. I looked over and saw Alex go under water. It was only ten seconds later that I saw Austin trip and Alex come up to hold him. I sprinted across as fast as the water would allow me and caught up with the two. Alex was holding Austin from behind. I grabbed under his armpits and began to try tickling him. I knew he was extremely ticklish. He began laughing hard, trying to catch his breath and escape from Alex's hold. "Screw....you...guys" Austin managed to shout out between fits of laughing. I looked up at Alex who nodded. I reached down for Austin's ankles and gripped them firmly. Alex and I lifted him out of the water and began swinging him. "One...two....three!" We released Austin who went sailing across the surface of the water to come crashing down about six or so feet away. We began laughing hysterically when Austin came up from the water with a betrayed, but amused, look on his face. We threw water at each other for a bit longer before deciding to finally settle down for a bit. For a few moments the only sound I could here was the lapping of the water against the beach. This tranquility was broken a few moments later when I heard loud splashing, shortly followed by yelling. I looked over to see David and his friends running into the water at the opposite side of the beach. I watched as David seemed to get the best of his group of friends. He looked over at me for a moment before diverting his attention back to wrestling his companions. I began to feel my hands prune. I walked over to the beach and lay out on my towel. Alex and Austin were soon to follow and lay down on their respective towels. I let the sun's rays warm my skin and dry off the beads of water from my body. The atmosphere felt tranquil despite the loud noises from David and his group. I felt a hand on my shoulder, causing me to sit up and open my eyes. I looked up to see Austin standing over me. "Dinner's going to be served in about thirty minutes. You should probably get a shower and get changed." Austin said "Got ya" I got up and walked with Austin back to the main building. We parted and I went to the communal bathroom/shower room down the hall. I didn't even bring a towel and instead opted to just bathe in my suit quickly and walk back to my room. Time seemed to be going by in a blur as I dried off with my towel. I was about to change when I heard the door open. I looked up at David who was still in his bathing suit. I went back to getting my clothes laid out. I heard the sound of elastic and nylon moving. I looked over to see David with his suit at his ankles, changing into his clothes. It was nearly impossible not to stare. His defined torso and muscle definition on his legs drew me. Plus his skin was tanned even where you'd expect a tan line. And of course, he had a nice package. A little bit of hair was coming in, but it was still mostly smooth. I realized I'd been staring and looked up to see David looking over at me. A sly smile formed on his lips as I looked away. I know I blushed. David put on a pair of his silky Nike shorts before I heard him say softly "Jealous it's so much bigger than yours?" My embarrassment turned to rage in a matter of milliseconds. "I'm not smaller than you!" I shouted, a huff coming from my nose. "Prove it" David said smugly. I didn't even give it a seconds thought before I pulled down the front of my bathing suit and exposed myself to David. He looked down and the smug look from his face disappeared. Instead it was replaced with confusion and curiosity. "What's wrong with your dick?" Oh right...I forgot. "It's called foreskin" I said as I reached down and moved the skin back and forth a bit before I pulled my suit back up. "Is that normal?" David asked, a hint of disgust in his voice. "Yeah!" I shouted back. David stepped back, shocked at my sudden burst. I felt red line my cheeks as the embarrassment at my outburst reached me. "I mean, yeah" I said more quietly. I looked up at David who still looked confused but cautious. "When you're born doctors can either leave you uncircumcised like me, or they can do a circumcision. It's more common it the US to get a circumcision, but not much anywhere else. Since I was born in Canada, it just wasn't very common so my parents didn't get it done" I explained. David seemed less cautious now but I could still see curiosity on his face. "What'd you mean by circumcision?" "They cut off the foreskin that's on your penis" I explained. David's eyes went wide in shock. "They cut off part of my dick when I was born?" I shrugged. "Essentially, yeah" "Why?" I looked up at the ceiling trying to remember why people got circumcised anyway. "I know the Jewish do it for some religious reason. So do Christians. I think people think it's cleaner or something" I tried to explain, but I knew I didn't exactly know why either. "Is it?" I shrugged my shoulders again. "I've never had a problem with it. I think as long as you clean underneath the skin it's not a problem." "So they did it just cause they wanted to?" "Probably because it's the norm here" I explained. I pulled off my suit reached over to get a pair of underware to put on. I noticed out of the corner of my eye that David was watching me, and I could see where. I didn't give it much attention as I pulled my shorts on and lay on my bed for a few minutes. I could fee exhaustion overtaking me. I grabbed my book and began lazily reading it. "Well that's lame" David said harshly as he put on his shirt and lay on his bed. A few moments of silence passed by before I heard David speak up again. "Does it feel weird?" I put my book down and looked over at David. "What do you mean?" "I mean like does it feel weird wearing clothes and showering and stuff?" I shrugged my shoulders. "Not really. I've never not had it so I don't know what it'd feel like otherwise" I paused for a moment "Well I guess when I pull it back it feels really weird because it's sensitive since it's always covered" I tried to explain. A few more moments of silence passed by, and then the question I was expecting to be asked was asked. "How about when you jerk off?" I know I blushed at that moment. There was a strange tension in the room, and I could feel my heart go a little faster. I knew I wasn't fully aware of all the underlying nuances of this situation. I know hormones were causing irregular thinking. I didn't care. "It just feels like it would for anyone else. I guess I don't have to use lube or anything though since the skin kind of acts like that. Plus you can play with it some and it makes it feel even better" I could feel my stomach tensing up and my lungs like they were filled to their max. My breath was shallow and the adrenaline was in my veins. "It must be nice" I heard David say, a distinctive husk in his voice. We remained silent for a few more moments, not sure what was going to come next. "There's another guy on the football team like that" David started "I always thought something was wrong with his dick. A few other guys made fun of him, I didn't though. I didn't think it was okay to make fun of someone with something wrong. I just didn't know it was actually something you're born with" David explained. I was keenly paying attention to every word. In part because of the tension of situation, but also in part because I didn't expect David to have a soft side like that. He just never gave off that vibe, but I guess everyone's got a nice side somewhere in them. "I'm glad you did that for him. It was a nice thing to do" I said. "Thanks..." David paused for a few moments "and thanks for telling me about it. I just never knew" David said softly. "Anytime" I couldn't believe this conversation had gone from an insult to saying thank you. I couldn't believe that I was having racing thoughts like these, or that I was feeling a tension that wasn't hate filled with David. I knew what I was wanting. I was confused as to why, but maybe something else was there I wasn't aware of. My heart raced. "Guys time for dinner" Abraham said through the door. David and I jumped at the sudden noise. Our eyes wide and bodies tensed we sat up from the bed. I let out a sigh of relief wiped my hand across my forehead. "I didn't see that coming" I said with a bit of a laugh. "I didn't either" David said softly with a small smile. The tension was back in less than a second. I knew he wasn't referring to Abraham. I knew something else was there. My eyes locked with his for just a few moments. The blue was reflecting something else. I'd seen it before, but I wasn't sure why I was seeing it now. The door opened, once again causing a jump scare for both me and David. Nicholas appeared in the doorway with another boy in tow. "You ready to go?" "Yeah" David said and walked out the door with Nicholas. He turned his head just before he went into the hallway and our eyes locked for a brief moment before he was gone. I looked around for a few moments. I wasn't entirely sure what I was supposed to do next. I heard footsteps coming down the hall and saw Austin walking towards my room. "So ready for some subpar dining?" Austin said with a smile. The tension from before was nearly wiped away with that smile and joke. "Yup" I said as I joined Austin. Yet, in the very back of my mind, thoughts still raced around what'd just happened. I didn't know what I should be thinking, but I didn't want to give it any more thought. I just needed to distract myself. We'd just walked out the door and the setting sun's rays hit me. Red, yellow, orange, and all the other colors mixed to form a canvas on the horizon. It was beautiful, and it was different, but yet it felt relatable. I don't think I was thinking about the sunset anymore. Dinner had been okay and tonight we could actually go to each other's rooms if we wanted to. I'd just spent the last half hour before bed in Austin and Alex's room. Just a lot of talk about what we'd do when we got home. "Dude it's about time" Alex said pointing down to his watch. 9:47, lights out at 10 "Yeah, I've gotta go to brush my teeth and get ready for bed" I said as I picked myself off of Austin's bed. "I'm sure you'll survive another night" Austin said with a sly smile. I just rolled my eyes in response and stopped for a moment. I reflected for a second. Something was different. I knew it was. "I'm sure I will" I said with a nod. "Night man" Alex called out. "See ya tomorrow" Austin said. "Night guys" I said as I walked out the door. I began heading towards my room and passed Abraham on the way. He stopped me for a moment before I'd passed the commons. "I was just looking for you. David said you'd gone to Austin's room" Abraham said. "Yeah, sorry, was I supposed to be in my room earlier?" Abraham shook his head in response. "No, I was just coming to tell you that you need to start heading back to your room. But if you already know that, then I'll trust you to remember it in the future" Abraham said with a smile. "Thanks Abraham" I replied with a smile as well. Abraham reached out and patted me on the head. "Goodnight Joseph, sleep well" "Goodnight Abraham" I said as I began heading back down the hall. I'd just gotten to my room when I heard footsteps coming up behind me. I looked back to see David only clad in a towel around his waist. "Oh hey" David said as he walked around me into our room. "Hey" I responded. I realized that I was again staring at his physique a bit too long again. I forced myself to read a book instead and try to not focus. It felt like an eternity and a half before I'd glanced over and saw that David was fully dressed now. A part of me was relived, but another part was wishing I'd stared for a bit. David lay on his bed as I continued to read my book. "I'm gonna play some music before lights out" David announced. He pulled out a small blue set of speakers that look like a giant pill with some red beats logo on them. "Fine, as long as it's not that stupid hip hop crap" I said with disgust as I went back to my book. "Pfff, whatever man" David said. There's the asshole part of him again. He pulled out his iPod and hit play. I heard the first two seconds of the song and I froze. I knew this song, how the hell couldn't I know it. "Shit!" David said, desperately grabbing at his iPod to change the song. "That's Owl City!" I said as I shot up from my bed. "No its not!" David shot back as he unplugged his iPod. "Yes it is! That's Fireflies by Owl City!" I said again. I could see David's cheeks turning red as his eyes darted to the left. He looked like he was trapped. "If you say anything..." David started to say with a menacing look in his eyes. "It's okay David..." I paused for a second. Did I really want to put myself out there like this? Then again nobody really cared what music I liked. "I like Owl City to" I said. David's eyes went wide for a moment, but his shocked expression was quickly replaced by one of caution. "Really?" "Meteor Shower, This is the Future, Sky Diver, Cave In, The Saltwater Room, need I say anymore David" I said with a smile. David looked astounded for a few moments. "I didn't know other guys actually liked them" David said. "Well it's actually one guy so it's technically him" I said with a small laugh. "Just promise you won't tell anyone. I'd get shit for it from the team" David said, his gaze on the floor. "I promise I won't David. I wouldn't be a dick like that. Besides he makes good music so who cares?" "Only girls and wierdos listen to Owl City" David said reluctantly. I knew that's not what he believed, and I knew that's what he was being told. I wasn't surprised, Owl City was a bit more on the...well it wasn't something you'd expect a football player or jock to listen to. David was definitely not someone you'd expect to listen to Owl City. "Well you chose the bed first remember?" I said, hoping to god that came across as a joke like I meant it to. David looked up for a moment. And then he smiled and laughed some. "Ha, well I'd still get shit if anyone knew I listen to it" David said. He was more relaxed now and moved back to leaning against the wall beside his bed. I'd put my book down and was doing the same on my bed. "So what's your favorite song by them?" David's cheeks blushed again. He seemed hesitant for a moment but he looked up after a few seconds and responded. "Meteor Shower is my favorite" David said. He watched me, and I nodded for him to continue. "Why is it your favorite?" I asked. "It's how I feel about other people and about god..." David paused, and seemed really hesitant, as if he was about to divulge some dark secret. I could feel the tension and my excitement, but I had no clue as to what was coming. "I can be really weak sometimes. Like, I'm just a shitty person at times..." David paused again "well a lot of the time." He sat up from his bed and was sitting on the edge now. "It's not because I hate anyone, but people don't get me and sometimes I don't get me either, and I need people. I really need them and god when I'm not making sense...and" David looked up and let out a sigh as he collapsed back onto his bed. "I don't know man. I just don't know how to explain it." I didn't expect this at all. I wasn't ever expecting to see this side of David. Hell I didn't even know this side existed. I simply thought he was an asshole through and through. I wasn't expecting this, so I wasn't expecting my response either. I got up off my bed and walked across the room to be directly in front of David's bed. David sat up with a confused look on his face. "What?" I leaned in and pulled him into a hug. David pulled away for a moment because of the shock, but gave in and put his arms around me as well. "I get you David, I promise man, I do" I replied. "Thanks" We pulled away when the hug ended. Our eyes met for what felt like forever until he finally looked away, his cheeks turning red again. "Look, sorry if I seemed really girly or overemotional..." I cut him off before he could continue. "You've got emotions to man. It's okay to feel them, and I enjoyed talking to you. I'm actually glad we don't have to argue all the time" I said with a smile. David's embarrassed look turned to one of comfort as a smile came across his face. "Thanks" We heard a loud knock at the door. "Time for bed guys, its lights out" Abraham called through the door. We'd both jumped backwards and were equally shocked. I looked over at David, and soon we both let out sighs of relief and laughed it off a little. "I'll hit the lights" I said as I walked over and flipped the switch. "Hey Joseph" David said softly in the dark. "Yeah?" "When we get back home, maybe we should hang out sometime" I knew time must have froze for a moment. I'd never think I'd hang out with David, and it seemed that all past tensions had been gone within the blink of an eye. I began to wonder why we'd ever hated each other in the first place. This wasn't the David that treated me like shit all the time. This was someone else who happened to have the same name and body, and honestly, they were a pretty cool person. "Sure, I'd like that" I said softly. "Okay, night Joseph" David said. "Goodnight David" I replied. And with that I was left alone to ponder my thoughts and process the day's events. And for a few fleeting moments, a new thought appeared in my mind. I felt adrenaline in my veins and my chest tighten. I turned to look over at David who looked like he was nearly asleep. He really wasn't that bad looking, and maybe not that bad of a person either. Authors Note: Hey again everyone.
