After kicking his only son out, Neil turned around and saw his wife right up against him. But this time she was fighting back. "I can't believe you threw out your only son just because of the way he is. He cannot help that he isn't normal to your fuckin' standards." "Michelle, he's..." "He's just like any boy to me. Neil, he is a great son, he is our only child. We can't have anymore kids, it is over for me." "Michelle, I know he's our only child, but I don't want him..." Michelle stopped him in his tracks again. "If you don't take him back into this house, then I'm leaving you and you can live here alone. Then we'll see that you would come crawling back wishing for Devin and I to live with you." Neil was about to hit her again, when she raised her hand and stopped him, "Neil don't hit me or I'm calling the police. They'll politely take you away for a bit because they have heard way too many cases of assault. You are going to take him back and love him like you never did before. I talked to Devin and he was not going to go crazy with Coleman." "But..." "No buts, you have one hour to think about what you did or I'm leaving." Neil didn't like the ultimatum that his wife gave to him, however he had to decide with the lesser of two evils. The decision he was about to make contradicted a belief that he has grown up with his ultra-conservative father. Then again it is his only son that he is dealing with. Michelle won't be able to bear another child. He just has to face reality and accept Devin for who he is. "Alright, Devin can stay with us." "Good...I don't want to have a split family because of this, so I'm going to find Devin." Michelle walked confidently into the den, as Neil just stood there shocked as to what just happened. His son, HIS ONLY CHILD, is gay. He cannot believe that his wife does not stand by his decision and stands by the boy. The boy is a symbol for everything that he has been against for his entire conscious life. He remembers being a young lad growing up in the conservative early 1960s that homosexuality is not acceptable. He remembers that he intimidate fellow male classmates in junior high if they were acting queer or even had a hint of homosexuality. However, his morals break down to the idea that he would lose his family if he does not accept his son's sexuality. Neil then realizes it is not 1963 anymore, 2002 is vastly different for his son's generation compared to his own. A gay young man must be accepted more than it was during his time. Maybe Neil has not caught up with the times. As Neil is spellbound, Michelle walks as if she just took down the evil dragon and coming home to reap the benefits. However, when she sat down on the couch, she started to sob. She won the battle, but she might have just lost the war. Her only son ran away because his father was lashing out on him and might not come back. However, she quickly realized that those ideas she just made were just from emotion, not what actually happened. She had the intuition that Devin went to Coleman's house to be comforted by his boy. She decided to stay where she was and allowed Devin to talk about all of his problems to Coleman before she goes rescues him. On the other side of town, Coleman was in his bedroom relaxing while his mother was downstairs doing some housecleaning. Coleman just looked up at his ceiling, thinking he should be doing something productive but decided against it. He knew that school was starting up again in three days while he would have practice on Tuesday and the first game of the season would happen on Thursday the 6th. He loved the summer because of the void of responsibilities, the magical late nights, waking up at noon, the times with friends in the woods, the innocence of youth, and especially that he can see Devin without a worry about how others would perceive him. But that is all to be taken away from him very soon. This summer is one of the last where he can be a kid. Maybe within the next two years he would have to have a job! That magical feeling of summer would all but fade away. He liked not having the stigmas that younger kids have but he still did not want to grow up. He wished he could be forever fourteen while Devin is forever sixteen. Coleman slowly crept into an interlude that had him in his bedroom, but he was looking out the window during the middle of the night. The bright, full moon was shining through the windows casting Coleman's silhouette onto the opposite wall. Coleman turned around and saw this astonishing boy. The boy was about Coleman's age but he had incredible long, curly blond locks, the only hair visible on this boy's body. The boy had only vines and ivory covering his boyish body, protecting him from being exposed. Not that would have been a problem with Coleman. No words were said by the two boys as they looked at each other in awe. Coleman thought that this boy was an angel coming down to rescue him, he was just gorgeous. The boy embraced Coleman and the boys just stayed there. Coleman could feel the boy's heart beating. The boy pecked Coleman on the cheek and walked over to the window. At the window the boy said, "I want to take you to this magical place where you can be forever fourteen," a long silence occurred before the boy said, "This magical place has many beautiful boys your age wanting to stay young as well. There, they can be boys without a care in the world because it is always summer. No responsibilities." Coleman reacted with such vigor that the boy knew he wanted to come with him. "But this place is not just for any boy, it is for boys who love other boys and can show their love to a special boy there." Coleman's eyes became starry, he wanted to go to this magical place. He wanted to stay a boy forever and be with other boys. "We can't stay here too long, so we must go. I have another boy to pick up." The boy opened the window and climbed out. Coleman didn't see where he went, so he peered out into the night and he was tugged by the boy into the night sky. They flew for just seconds until they arrived in another bedroom. In the bedroom, they saw another boy. But because of the lack of lighting, they could not see the boy too well. Coleman walked up to this boy and realized it was Devin. The boy that ventured into his room and they ventured together to Devin's room. He was going to take them away and take them to this parameter where they can all be young boys forever. Coleman hugged Devin while Devin reciprocated the action. The boys were hugging each other, ready to go to this land. The boy with the locks grabbed Devin and Coleman's hand and they walked up to the window, opened it and flew into the night. But the dream was cut short when he heard the doorbell ring. He knew he couldn't have been dazing for too long. Coleman finally decided to stand up and leave the bed. As soon as he stood up, he forgot what his dream was. Little did Coleman know that he let his own imagination run wild. It was an amazing interlude that he would love to have. Coleman walks down the stairs and opens the door. Delighted to see his boy again, however the mood was sunken because he knew why he was here. Devin started to tear up when he saw his boy come to the rescue. Devin starting whimpering and hugging Coleman as he said, "My dad kicked me out, my dad kicked me out! He beat me up and took me out of the house." Coleman held him in his arms as he tried to calm him down. He did not want to say anything; but just have Devin come back down to Earth, so they can talk. Coleman almost directed Devin so they were walking to the couch. Even though they were walking, Devin could not stop crying. He has had such an incredible emotional and physical rollercoaster during the last seven days. He could not take anymore; he just had to let it all out. "Devin, Devin, I bet your father just had to lash out at something just because of the big news. He wasn't expecting it. He loves you very much and will not let you go just because of you liking other boys," Coleman whispered as he was stroking Devin's hair. "I guess your right. But I am so upset that he did this to me," Devin sniffled. "I just want him to love me as a son and like me as a gay or bi boy." "I think if you go home in a little while, I bet everything will be just fine. I think your dad just has to be by himself and think about what he has done. Your mother won't allow for your preference to interfere with your family. Everything will be just fine." "I hope so." Coleman didn't know what else to do in this situation. He wanted to control the situation, but he only knew that he was able to by kissing him. But his mother was probably nearby. Coleman didn't care anymore, he loved Devin Kelly and was indifferent to his mother knowing about his love towards Coleman. Coleman sank his lips toward Devin's and they contacted each other. The lips didn't move because it was more than just a physical act; it was a display of affection for Coleman caring for his boy. While this kiss was happening, Mrs. Fleming watched her son kiss his new buddy. She was not phased by the circumstances that were going on in front of her. She had an idea that her son might be gay since he was in seventh grade. It was his mannerisms and tells that made his sexual orientation very questionable. But now she knows. She didn't want to interrupt. She stepped away into the kitchen and she would talk to him after he was done with Devin. After their lips separated from each other, the boys had nothing to say. Their actions did all the talking. They just looked at each other with a loving glaze in their eyes as they caressed each other. The sunlight filtered through the curtains and blinds, causing Devin's hair to shine a golden colour to Coleman while Coleman's hair was slightly lighter. It was a beautiful sight. "Hey I better go home now and fix things up," Devin said as he broke the silence. "I need to take care of some unfinished business." "Alright, well I hope it works out for you Devin." "It definitely will," Devin said as he kissed Coleman on the cheek. "See ya." "See ya," Devin said as he left the house. Coleman got up to the front window and saw Devin walk away. Mrs. Fleming walked up and placed her hands on top of his shoulders as they watched Devin walk away. "You love that boy, don't you Coleman?" Coleman was hesitant with his answer. He gulped as his mother felt his Adam's apple jump up and down in his throat. She knew that this was going to be difficult. "I love Devin mom. He has been the first person I have had any feelings on." "Son, I had this feeling inside me that you were gay. I'm perfectly fine with that and I love you for who you are. Just be careful with what you do because guys can take advantage of you incredibly easily." "I know mom, I thank you for caring about me but I am very sure I love Devin and he loves me back." "I just don't want you to be hurt." "Devin will never hurt me, mom." "I think he won't either, he seems like a terrific young man." Devin walks to his house, for what seems like he is facing the arch nemesis, but at the same time he feels like everything will be okay. He walks up to his front stoop and sees the door open. He sees his mother saying, "Devin you're back! Everything will be just fine." "Oh good, where's dad? How is he doing?" "I think he just didn't know how to react when he found out. So the only way he could was to release his anger on somebody, and I think it had to be you." "How did he react to you?" "Not as bad. He was upset, because you are his ONLY child and he wanted grandchildren. So you being gay was an obstruction towards that, ya know?" "Well, I want to talk to him about that." "I think he is upstairs in the bedroom. He had to think of a lot lately." "Yeah, well I'm going to talk to him." "I think that's a great idea. I'll stay away from you two because that will be a very private talk." "Yep." Devin walked up the stairs to his parents' bedroom and knocked on the door. A faint voice said, "Come in." Devin entered the room and saw his dad sitting up on the bed. "Devin, I'm so sorry for reacting the way I did, I could not believe what I had done to my own son." "That's okay dad. It was something that's not easy to find out. Especially when it deals with your only son." "Devin, I'm proud of you, but I want you to be whoever you want to be. And you being gay made me upset because it was a surprise. I thought you would live out my dream of you having a great wife and children." "Well, I can still have a family, but that's too far out in the future." "I love you Devin, but I don't want you to be hurt. Remember, we live in a conservative area, and there's a lot of animosity towards queers. So please be careful." "I will dad." Devin and Neil hugged each other, knowing that what happened is behind them. Devin got over one hurtle; now he has one more. He needs to patch up the friendship with Phil. It seemed like all ties with him are cut, but he wants Phil to be friends again. They released from their hug and Devin got up to have a date with destiny. End of Chapter 13.
