Dad I know I didn't tell you this enough before you died, but I love you and you will always be my hero. Special Memorial: Hello, My dad was in a bad car wreck in the early part of June of 2008 and fought for his life until October 1 2008. My dad who was my hero didn't have the strength to fight anymore and peacefully died in his sleep. I love you Dad and I miss you so much. You will always be my hero. Matt Jones "Silent Ninja" Editing Thanks: Special thanks go to Miguel Sanchez for his great work on proof reading and editing this chapter for me. Thanks Miguel, I really appreciate your hard work on making this chapter even better by clearing up my mistakes. From The Previous Chapter: "Oh Shawn, my mom and Mr. Wilcox are getting married, and he is making us move away." He told me through his tears. "Mr. Wilcox don't like living around here and he told my mom he thought you were a bad influence on me and it would be better to move me to Washington where his family lives." He said while trying not to totally break down at school. "We are moving to Washington Friday, so we just have a few more days together." He whispered to me as we walked to our next class. My world was crashing down around me, Cody was moving away and I would never see him again. When I got home from school my granddad saw that I had been crying, and he asked me what was going on. When I told him what Cody told me, he got really mad. He told me to get my homework done and he would finish dinner when he got back because he had to run a quick errand. He hugged me and told me he would be back in a little while. Well I found out later my granddad went over to Cody's house and confronted Mr. Wilcox about what Cody had told me. The worse thing was he couldn't change their minds and Cody, his mom, and Mr. Wilcox moved anyway and my world fell in around me. I became depressed and very moody. My granddad tried everything to help me and even flew Miss Brown out here for a visit to see if she could help bring me out of my depression. I was glad to see her but it still didn't change the fact that the love of my life, my soul mate, Cody was gone. Chapter 2: What's The Use, He's Gone! I really enjoyed Miss Brown's visit but other than that my summer sucked, Cody was gone and life as I knew it was over. I just didn't want to go on. My granddad tried everything to cheer me up. He took me to counseling, we went to Disney World, and even took me camping and fishing for two weeks. Nothing helped, my life was over and I didn't care about anything. It has been six weeks now since Cody and his mom had moved and I haven't heard a word from him. Each day it gets harder to deal with. I was down in the dumps and depressed all the time. I even considered suicide. My granddad was very worried about me so he took me back to Dr. Sutton and he put me on some medication for my depression because all I could think about was Cody. I haven't heard a word from him since he left and he must not love me anymore. The meds helped some but my world as I knew it was over without my soul mate Cody. Over dinner granddad told me that school would be starting in two weeks and he would be taking me shopping in the morning for all new school clothes and supplies. As I nodded my head in agreement I thought to myself. "Oh Cody, Where are you?" The next morning granddad took me shopping. I got my new school clothes and all the school supplies I would need to start my freshman year in high school. While we were shopping I made my mind up. I was going to throw myself in my studies and just get through one day at a time. I was going to try to bury the pain. The following morning I woke up 45 minutes before my alarm clock started its buzzing. I got up and began to get ready for my first day at high school. After getting dressed, brushing my hair, and getting my book bag ready, I went downstairs to eat breakfast with my granddad. Granddad and I made small talk over a breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast. When I finished my breakfast I went to brush my teeth before granddad took me to school. When we got to the school granddad told me he was proud of me and to try to enjoy myself. I got out of his truck waved to him and ran inside the school without saying a word to anyone. As I entered the school I saw several people I knew from last year making their way to the auditorium. I fell in behind them and as we entered the auditorium I took a seat with about 325 other freshmen. The principal got up and proceeded to give a very long and boring welcome speech that just about put everyone to sleep. Then he went over the rules and what was expected out of the students here at Westside High School. I never have been a trouble maker so I zoned him out and began to day dream about Cody. The next thing I knew he had dismissed us to get in line to get our class schedules. I got into the right line and began to inch my way up to the table where one of the counselors were giving out our class schedules. I hadn't been paying much attention to anything around me but when I finally made my way up to the table where the counselor was sitting, I got a very big surprise. There sat Miss Brown my seventh grade teacher. Miss Brown's Point a View... When I looked up from my clipboard I saw my all time favorite student Shawn standing there. When he saw me his mouth dropped open like a fish, I giggled at him and said. Hello Shawn, I am your new counselor this year. If you need anything this year at all come see me." Then I handed him a class schedule, and an envelope and sent him on his way Shawn's Point a View... "Oh wow!" I said to myself as I walked off to find my first period math class. When I found room 221 I took the first desk I came to and quickly sat down. While the teacher was issuing books I took a moment to read my letter that Miss Brown gave me. Dear Shawn: When my brother told me this counselor's job was coming open I immediately applied for the position. Butte is my home town and it is good to finally come home. When I found out I got the job I immediately requested to have you placed into my case load. If you need anything, please come see me. You are a special young man Shawn and I'm here for you if you need to talk. Miss Brown Mr. Watson gave the normal speech about what he expected in his class and what all we would be covering this year. As soon as he finished the bell rang for second period. Every class went the same way until fifth period PE class. As soon as I walked into the gym, TJ Smith, a boy I had trouble with last year started running his mouth by saying, "Hey Shawn, where's your Indian boyfriend Crazyhorse?" I froze for a moment before walking over to an empty locker. Then I sat my stuff down on the bench before turning to face TJ saying, "Back off asshole, if it is any of your business my best friend's name is Cody Littlehorse not Crazyhorse." The next thing I knew TJ attacked me and I let him throw the first punch before flying into him like a tornado. Coach Stevens pulled me off of TJ asking what the hell was going on and who started the fight. I stood there not saying a word when Billy Crosswhite a friend of mine from last year said, "Coach Stevens, TJ started the fight when he called Shawn and his best friend Cody Littlehorse boyfriends. He also threw the first punch Coach." He told Coach Stevens as TJ glared at him. Then Coach looked at me asking, "Shawn is that what happened?" When I nodded my head in the affirmative he took TJ to the office. When he returned he told us what to expect this year in gym class. About ten minutes before gym class was over they called my name over the intercom system to report to the guidance counselor's office. When I arrived in the office, Miss Fielding told me to go right on into Miss Brown's office that she was expecting me. When I walked into Miss Brown's office she gave me a big smile before saying, "Shawn, are you alright? I heard about what happened. Do you need me to call your granddad?" She asked before I had time to respond to her first question. "I'm ok Miss Brown; you don't need to call Granddad." I said giving her my most reassuring smile. "I didn't start the fight, TJ did." I hurriedly said thinking I might be in trouble. "Shawn you are not in trouble at all so please relax. I just wanted to make sure you were alright and not hurt." She told me as she stood up handing me a hall pass. I gave her a hug thanked her for her concern and headed for my last class of the day. When my last class was over I headed for my locker, grabbed what I needed for the night and went to find my granddad's truck. I filled him in on what happen as we headed home and as we were pulling into our driveway I ask my granddad if I could go riding for a little while. He said I could so I went to my room, quickly changed out of my school clothes into my riding jeans and headed out to saddle Hercules. I had a special spot in mind so Hercules and I made our way to my favorite place on the entire ranch. It was a large hill that you could see the entire valley from the top. I dismounted, tied Hercules reins to a scrub bush and just gazed out over the valley. This was my thinking spot. This is where I brought Cody on our first ride. I mounted back up about forty five minutes later and headed back to the house. When I reached the house I unsaddled Hercules, brushed him out real good and fed him for the night before going to get cleaned up myself. After dinner I went to my room done what little homework I needed to do and went to bed early. The next day I began my plan to take one day at a time and get the best education I could get at this school. The teachers really liked this attitude and helped me with anything I needed. I had no more trouble my freshman year with anyone picking on me or trying to start a fight with me and before I knew it, it was two weeks before school got out for the summer. While sitting in math class today Billy Crosswhite passed me a note telling me to read it after class. Shawn, There's a rodeo the second weekend after school is out for the summer and I need a partner in the team roping competition. Would you be my partner? If so can we start practicing this weekend? Will you let me know if you're interested in gym class? I thought about it until we got into the locker room and began dressing out for class when I told Billy I would be his partner in the team roping competition. We talked about the rodeo all the time we were changing into our gym clothes and agreed to meet at my house Saturday morning at 9:00 A.M to practice. Saturday morning about ten minutes before nine Billy came riding up on his pinto quarter horse Jax. My granddad and I were ready for him and Billy and I began to practice immediately. By lunch time Billy and I were working together really well and would be a hard team to beat at the rodeo. Granddad fixed hamburgers on the grill and after we ate we practiced for two more hours before Billy had to get home. We made arrangements to practice again tomorrow and he took off home. Billy and I got together the next day, practiced for a little while before I asked him to follow me because there was something I wanted to show him. I took him up to my special place where we dismounted and talked for a long while. I told him I was gay, explained to him why I lived with my granddad and all about Cody and me. I couldn't help it I needed a friend I could talk to you know someone my own age? I took a big chance confiding in Billy but I was hoping he wouldn't betray my confidence. Billy's Point a View: When I heard Shawn's story all I could do is cry. I was so honored he would trust me enough to tell me what all he has been through the last few years. When I looked up at him I saw fear of rejection in his face so I said, "Oh man Shawn I don't know what to say, I'm so sorry you had to go through all that hell." Then I stood up, walked over to Shawn and gave him a big hug. As I stood there hugging Shawn I said, "Shawn, I'm your friend no matter if you like guys or gals." "I like you for who you are not who you like." "I'm proud to be your friend." Shawn's Point a View: As I stood there crying on Billy's shoulder I thought to myself, "Oh wow, I told him everything and he ain't running away from me, maybe I can go on after all." Billy and I mounted back up and made our way back to my house. When we got back, Billy had to head on home for supper. I unsaddled Hercules, brushed him down and fed him before heading in to get cleaned up myself. Billy and I practiced a few more times before the night of the rodeo where we ended up taking first place in our age division of the team roping competition. After that night Billy and I were best friends forever and were together all the time. We were not boyfriends just best friends and would do anything for each other. Billy and I were involved in everything at school from sports to politics our sophomore and junior years. I wrestled and Billy ran track. I was class president of our sophomore year and Billy was class president of our junior year. Then before we realized it we were going into our last year of high school. We would be seniors this year then on to college. Our senior year started off with a bang when the coach of the wrestling team came up to me the first day and told me that the wrestling team voted Unanimously in favor of making me team captain. I stood there in total shock and when I could talk I said, "Oh wow Coach, I'll do my best to make you and the team proud." When I caught up with Billy in third period and told him my good news, he congratulated me while giving me a high five. This was just the beginning of good news though because when Billy sat down beside me during lunch he told me he was now the captain of the track team. I was just as happy for him as he was for me. It looks like our senior year is going to be totally AWESOME! Our senior year was everything we could imagine it would be and more. During the last six weeks of school Billy and I were called to the office. When we got there we were told to go right on into Principal Brooks' office. When we walked through the door of Principal Brooks' office, we saw Billy's parents, my granddad, Miss Brown and Principal Brooks. As soon as Billy and I took the only two seats left in the room Principal Brooks began talking, "Well boys I have some very good news for both of you. Shawn due to your GPA being the highest in the school so that makes you our Valedictorian this year and Billy your GPA was just a half of a point lower than Shawn's so you will be our Salutatorian at our graduation. Everyone in this office is very proud of you guys and I want to be the first to congratulate you both." He said as he stood to shake our hands. After that everyone started congratulating us. My granddad gave me a big hug telling me how proud he was of me while Billy's parents were doing the same to him. Then Mr. and Mrs. Crosswhite gave me a hug while my granddad gave Billy a hug as well. Then Miss Brown came up to me with tears in her eyes and gave me a big hug. As she was hugging me she told me how proud she was of me. The night of graduation was finally here and it was my turn to give my Valedictorian speech. I stepped up to the mic, took a deep breath and began speaking from the heart. "Welcome to all family members, friends, West Side High School faculty and fellow classmates. "I entered this school four years ago a very timid and confused young person, but today I leave this school as a confident self assured young man knowing I can face what comes my way. "I can hold my head up high and face trouble head on because of what I've learned right here at West Side High School in the last four years. "On behalf of the class of 2010 I want to thank the teachers, counselors and staff here at West Side High School for your hard work and dedication in helping us achieve an education that will take us far into the future. "Last but certainly not least I want to thank three very important people in my life. First off I want to thank Miss Brown for being there for me during a very difficult time in my life. I think you're an AWESOME lady and it has been an honor to have had you as both a teacher and a counselor." "Now for my best friend Billy Crosswhite; thanks man for being a friend when I needed a friend and a shoulder to lean on during the hard times. Billy, I'm proud to call you my best friend and if you ever need me I'm there for you. "Now for my hero; Granddad you will always be my hero, because you rescued me from a time of my life that pains me to think about. You always encouraged me in everything I tried to do no matter what. Granddad I'm here today because of you, I love you! "Thank you all for making these last four years challenging, fun and very rewarding. "God bless you all."" As I finished my speech and walked off the stage I had tears streaming down my cheeks. The Audience immediately erupted in loud applause. When I took my seat and looked up I noticed that the audience was not only clapping but they were giving me a standing ovation. When the graduation ceremony was over Billy was the first to walk up to me and give me a hug. Then he punched me in the arm saying, "That is for making me cry with your speech." Then I was grabbed and hugged by Miss Brown. While she was hugging me she said, "Oh Shawn I am so proud of you. You are a special young man and it has been an honor to have you as a student as well." Then my granddad walked up to me, gave me a bear hug and said, "Shawn, I am so proud of you. I have a surprise waiting for you in the parking lot as a graduation present." When the congratulations were over and only my closest friends were still there, my granddad asked everyone to follow him to the parking lot so he could show me my graduation present. When we reached the parking-lot I saw a vehicle with a cover over it. My granddad told me to remove the cover and there was a fully loaded 2010 convertible Mustang. It was candy apple red with black interior. I gave my granddad a big hug before asking Billy if he wanted to go for a ride. Billy and I rode around for a couple of hours before I took him home and headed home myself. When I arrived home my granddad was sitting in his recliner reading a book. He marked his place and looked up at me asking, "Well Shawn, how do you like it?" I told him how smooth it drove, how well it handled around curves and how much I loved it. My granddad and I talked well into the night before we both decided to head off to bed. I worked with my granddad at M & M Electronics during the summer and before I knew it, it was time to go back to school. I decided to go to the University here in Butte so I could still help my granddad here on the ranch. I went to the university to register for classes and as I was parking my mustang Billy pulled into the parking spot beside me. Billy and I walked into the university talking about what we would be majoring in. He was going to specialize in Computer Engineering and I was going to specialize in Software Engineering and Web Design. It turns out Billy and I would have a lot of classes together because of our two computer fields we would be specializing in. My granddad had already offered Billy a position with M & M Electronics as soon as we got our degrees. As I was driving home from the university I let my mind travel down painful paths again. I began to wonder where Cody was right now and if he was ok. I still have a hard time dealing with not hearing from him and I try not to think about it much because it just gets me depressed again. When I got back to the ranch I took Hercules out for a long ride and by the time I got to my special place I was sobbing uncontrollably. "Oh Cody where are you?" I cried out from the very depths of my heart. I didn't know what else to do so I began to pray. "Lord, I know I don't talk to you as much as I should but I need some help here. Please send Cody back to me, I need him and I love him. If he is not coming back to me please help me move on with my life." When I finished praying I mounted Hercules and headed back to the ranch. As I walked into the house granddad told me dinner would be ready as soon as I could get cleaned up. Over dinner granddad ask me all about my classes and I told him that Billy and I would have several classes together. The following week I officially started college. I took to my classes like a duck takes to water and by the time Christmas came around I was ahead of my classmates in all my classes. My granddad got me interested in computers at a young age. He is the CEO of M & M Electronics and he had me using computers at age three. Just like my granddad computers was in my blood. I worked hard over the next several months and it really paid off. It looks like I'm going to be able to graduate about six to nine months early. Billy was also doing good and was going to be able to graduate at the same time. He was able to build computers from the ground up with his eyes closed. He handled the hardware and I handled the software. When Billy and I got our BS degrees in our specialized fields we immediately went to work for my granddad at M & M Electronics. My granddad wanted me to learn the business from the ground up. He wanted me to run the company one day so I began to learn everything about the company I could possibly know, so when that day came I could take over for him. About six months later we got a major contract with Rainbow Enterprises. They wanted the security software I designed loaded on all their computers and their employees trained in how to use it. My granddad told me to go ahead and take the company jet to Denver and get them all set up because I would have to train them on how to use the security software anyway. Over the next few days granddad told me all about Rainbow Enterprises and their new CEO Buck Davis. He told me how he made friends with the Wong's and how they left everything to him in their will when they died. As my granddad drove me to the airport a few days later, I couldn't shake an uneasy feeling I had concerning my granddad. When we reached the private aviation area I gave my granddad another big hug and boarded our company jet. As I took my seat the uneasy feeling I was having about my granddad hit me hard and I almost got off the jet. But I didn't and I would regret that decision for the rest of my life.
