Chapter 3: Heart Ache and a New Chance At Love As I sat there on the company jet I thought to myself, 'Oh man, I'll be in Denver for a month training them on the security software I designed.' A few hours later I arrived at the private aviation area of the Denver International Airport and was met there by CEO Buck Davis and his attorney Fred Green. After the introductions were out of the way, Buck asked me if I was hungry. When I said I was starving they took me to a very nice restaurant called The Palace. Over a very fancy lunch we talked business and I laid out my training outline to them both. When lunch was over Buck and Fred began to show me around Denver a little before taking me to the Brown Palace Hotel where I would be staying during my visit. Once we arrived at the hotel Buck and Fred immediately took me on up to the penthouse to show me my accommodations. They left me to get settled in a few minutes later telling me they would be by to get me at seven thirty so we could grab some breakfast before heading over to the Western head quarters of Rainbow Enterprises. After I unpacked I decided to call home to let granddad know I met with Buck and everything was on schedule to begin tomorrow morning. Then Granddad told me that he was working on a project that would make me very happy if things worked out the way he was hoping they would. No matter how hard I tried to get him to tell me what he was working on he wouldn't budge. Granddad's Point a View: Since my grandson Shawn is out of town I can finally put my plan in to action. My P. I. Mark Blackman was able to locate Cody Littlehorse for me and he also got me his current address and phone number in Washington. As soon as I got back to the office I placed my very important phone call to see if I could reunite Shawn with his soul mate Cody Littlehorse. "Hello? May I speak with Cody Littlehorse?" I asked when someone answered the phone. When the person confirmed that he was Cody Littlehorse I introduced myself. When Cody realized who I was I heard him inhale sharply and then he began to sob. Before Cody had time to speak I began by asking, "Cody? Are you alright? We've missed you around here son. I want to talk to you in person how soon can you travel here? I'll pay for your trip." When Cody told me he could come tomorrow I told him I would make all of the arrangements and would call him back in a few minutes with the details. After I called Cody back and told him about the arrangements I hung up the phone and started preparing for Cody's visit. The next morning I was up and ready before my alarm clock even woke up. I was at the airport forty five minutes before Cody's plane was scheduled to land. I spotted Cody as soon as he walked into the airport terminal and I walked over to him and gave him a big hug. When we broke our hug I looked at Cody while saying, Welcome home son, we've missed you around here." After retrieving Cody's luggage we headed to the ranch. The closer we got to the ranch the more nervous Cody became. I put him at ease by telling him Shawn was on a business trip and would be gone for a few weeks. As Cody relaxed when he heard Shawn wouldn't be there I also saw disappointment come across his face as well. When we got to the ranch I left Cody to get settled in while I went down to prepare some lunch. Over lunch I began to tell Cody how much Shawn still loves him, and how he has never liked or even went out with anyone else. I told him he could call me a meddling old granddad if he wanted but I told him I loved my grandson and I wanted to see him happy. Then I looked Cody in the eyes and told him that he made my grandson very happy and if he still loved Shawn I wanted to see them both happy again before I died. I told him I wanted to see him and Shawn run M & M Electronics one day and I would do anything to help make that dream come true. Then Cody began to tell me a story that almost made me lose my lunch. Cody's point a View? As I sat here listening to the words coming out of Mr. Matthews's mouth I was totally shocked. I began to tell him about what happened from the time we left Montana up and until now. I told him how Mr. Wilcox told me every day over and over how useless I was and how he wouldn't have no fag living with him. Then I told Mr. Matthews about a letter that Mr. Wilcox showed me that was supposed to have been from Shawn telling me he didn't want to have anything to do with me ever again. The letter also said that he hated me and hoped I would die. As tears ran down my cheeks I looked Mr. Matthews in the eyes and said, "My world came to an end that day, I gave up trying to contact Shawn thinking he hated me." Then I explained how my mom and Mr. Wilcox were killed in a car wreck last year and I have no one now. I finished up by telling Mr. Matthews that I still loved Shawn and there hasn't been a day go by I haven't thought of him. Granddad Matthews point a view? I was horrified at what Cody had gone through and told him he always had a family with us. Then I presented my business proposal to him. I told him I wanted him to start immediately and I would have his stuff moved to one of the apartments in the M & M Electronics building ASAP. This way you and Shawn can get to know each other again. Then I picked up the phone and placed a call to Billy and asked him to meet me at the ranch in the morning because I needed his help with something. When I hung up with Billy I asked Cody to follow me out to the barn for a moment. As soon as we walked in the barn Dream Catcher popped his head out of his stall and gave out a loud nay. Cody's face broke into a mile wide grin as he ran over to the stall door and began to fuss over the spotted horse that he thought he would never see again. As he stood there fussing over Dream Catcher he began to cry all over again. When Cody looked at me with that question in his eyes, I just nodded my head and Cody opened Dream Catcher's stall and began to saddle him up. While Cody was on his ride I called Billy back and filled him in on what I needed him to do and with that out of the way I turned to go back into the house. As I turned I felt a sharp pain in my chest and I just stood there trying to catch my breath for about three minutes. When the pain eased up I went in to the house and took another nitroglycerine pill. By the time Cody got back from his ride I was feeling fine and suggested we go out for dinner. I took Cody to the Long Horn Stake House for dinner and we both were stuffed by the time we left the restaurant. That night as I laid in bed I said a little prayer. "Lord, Please let this work out for my grandson. I love him so much. I know my time to go is coming near and I'm asking you for just one more thing. Please Lord, watch over them and bless their little family." As I said amen I felt a wonderful peace come over me and I fell fast to sleep. The next morning Billy arrived at the ranch bright and early and after I fed them a good breakfast I took them to the airport to catch their flight to Washington. On the plane Billy and Cody got to know each other better and became friends. Cody's point a view? Oh wow this must be a dream I thought to myself as we flew toward Washington to retrieve my belongings. Billy and I got to know each other better during our flight as well and when we reached Washington we headed to my apartment after stopping to get some boxes. When we arrived at my apartment I made a quick phone call to a real estate agent and made arrangements to meet her over at my mom's house later this afternoon. Then I placed a call to the phone company and the electric company and made arrangements to have them both cut off tomorrow and to have the final bills automatically deducted from my bank account. Then I got Billy to help me box up all of the food out of my cabinets, pantry and refrigerator and then we took the food over to another apartment where a very nice lady lived with her three kids. I explained to her I was moving back to Montana and couldn't take the food with me on the plane. I got all four of them to follow me back to my apartment so they could get any of my dishes or pots and pans she wanted while explaining to her if she didn't take them I was just going to leave them behind. She ended up taking them all and before they went back to their apartment I handed her the keys and title to my van. When she looked at the title she saw I had already signed it over to her. When she went to protest, I told her I wouldn't take no for an answer and I wanted them to have it. They all gave me a hug and promised to keep in touch with me through email. Now with the kitchen all cleaned out I began to box up all of my pictures and stuff I wanted to keep. When that was completed I started on my clothes. When I was all packed Billy and I began to take boxes down to the explorer. When we had the explorer fully packed we headed over to the FedEx office. By the time we finished at the FedEx office we headed to the house that was left to me by my mom because it was almost time to meet the real estate agent. I hated this house because it reminded me of Mr. Wilcox and how he treated me. Billy and I were there about ten minutes before Miss Phillips pulled into the driveway. She got out and introduced herself to Billy and I while shaking our hands. I walked her through the house and also around the house showing her everything. I answered all of her questions about the house and then she totally shocked me by immediately making me an offer on the house that was higher than what I was going to ask. She told me she was looking for a house like this for herself and she could go to the Bank of America with me right now and transfer the money straight into my account. She had her lawyer meet us at the bank and I signed all the paperwork needed to transfer the house to her and she in turn transferred 350,000 into my account. Now by this time Billy and I was starving so we headed over to a local mom and pop type restaurant near my apartment that I liked a lot. While we were eating I pump Billy for information about Shawn, I wanted to know everything. After we ate we went back to my apartment where I saw my landlord. Once I explained to him I was moving back to Montana, I went ahead and handed him my keys. I gave him M & M Electronics address and he told me he would send me my deposit in the next few days. Billy and I turned in early because we had to be at the airport by five thirty tomorrow morning. As soon as Billy and I had my two suitcases in the explorer we headed for the airport. The plane Mr. Matthews had chartered for us was ready and we were on our way back to Montana by ten minutes after six. Granddad Matthews was waiting on us at the airport when we arrived. He took us to the M & M Electronics building where I put my suitcases in the apartment that was assigned to me. Then we went to the cafeteria on the first floor and had a great lunch. After we ate, Billy headed off to his office and Granddad Matthews took me to do some errands. We went to the Bank of America where I got my account switch to Montana and before we left the bank i withdrew enough money to pay cash for my truck and insurance on it for a year. Then we headed off to the Ford dealership so I could pick me out a truck. I looked over the lot and didn't see anything I wanted until I saw a beautiful turquoise colored F-350 SD that was loaded with all the bells and whistles known to man. I knew I had to have this truck no matter what. When I sat down at the sales manager's desk, I told him I wanted that truck and I wasn't here to finance the truck but to pay cash for it today. Then I proceeded to tell him I wanted the best deal possible or I would go to another Ford dealership. He was more than glad to give me a good deal so I paid for the truck and went next door to Allstate and got my insurance. Before I left the Ford dealership I gave Granddad Matthews a big hug and told him I would see him in the morning at M & M Electronics. Then I headed back to my apartment to make me a list of what all I needed to stock my apartment but to my great surprise all I needed was groceries so I headed off to the grocery store. Once I had the groceries put away and my clothes hung up I cooked up some cube steaks and gravy and some homemade biscuits. When dinner was over and I had the dishes washed, I worked on a program I'm designing for a couple of hours before heading off to bed. When my alarm started buzzing the next morning I got up, took my shower and with laptop in hand went downstairs to work. When I got to Granddad Matthews's office he was waiting on me and showed me to my office. When I sat down at my desk I saw five files already waiting on me so Granddad explained that these five new companies wanted us to design and maintain their websites and then he went back to his office so I could get started on them. I immediately began reading through each file very carefully to learn as much as I could not only about the company but what they wanted on their websites. In the next two weeks, I had all five websites up, running and the customers were very happy with the results. One evening after work while I was watching a DVD, I got a disturbing phone call from Granddad Matthews telling me to get to the ranch he thought he was having a heart-a-tack. I think I broke every traffic law in Montana from running red lights, stop signs to speeding getting to the ranch. As I was speeding up the driveway of Granddad Matthews's ranch someone else pulled in behind me as well. I jumped out of my truck almost before it came to a complete stop and sprinted to the back door. As I let myself in Granddad's back door I prayed please Lord let him be alright. As I reached Granddad Matthews's side I could hear the siren of the ambulance getting close so I knelt down beside him and whispered, "Hang on Granddad help is on the way. Granddad Matthews View: As I opened my eyes I saw Cody kneeling beside me so I smiled at him saying, "I love you Cody. Please make me a promise. Promise me you'll take care of Shawn for me because he deserves to be happy." Cody's point a view: I told him I would take good care of Shawn but he needed to worry about getting better. I told him he was going to be around to watch over us for a long time and I would be there for him and Shawn both as long as they wanted me to be. Then Granddad's lawyer came up beside us and when Granddad saw him he said, "Robert my friend, you know what to do if I don't make it right? Please call Shawn for me, I need to see him before I die." As the paramedics prepared Granddad so they could transport him to the hospital Mr. Maxwell placed a call to Shawn he that he really didn't want to make. Robert Maxwell's and Shawn's point a view: I jolted out of a sound sleep as the phone began to ring in my hotel room. As I Reached for the phone I glanced at my digital alarm clock and noticed it was only 5:45 A.M. I was instantly wide awake and expecting bad news. "Hello?" I said into the phone receiver somewhat hesitantly. "Who?" I asked trying to comprehend what the person was saying on the other end of the phone connection. "May I speak to Mr. Shawn Matthews?" The caller wearily asked. When I acknowledged that I was indeed Mr. Shawn Matthews he continued, "Shawn, this is Robert Maxwell your Granddad's attorney." My heart began to sink as Mr. Maxwell explained to me that my granddad had a heart-a-tack and was calling for me, tears streamed down my face as I hung up the phone. I quickly got dressed and began to pack my suitcase. Mr. Maxwell told me there wasn't much time and I needed to get to Butte Montana as soon as I could. Once packed, I called Houston's George Bush Intercontinental airport and booked a flight that would leave at 8:45 A.M., and would arrive in Butte Montana about 1:30 P.M. I checked out of the hotel I was staying at, jumped into my rental car and headed for the airport. Shawn's point a view: I made good time getting to the George Bush Intercontinental airport and after I had my boarding pass in hand I called Mr. Maxwell back and gave him my flight schedule. Once on the plane I began to think about my granddad and what he really means to me. When I walked into the terminal at the Bert Mooney Airport in Butte Montana, I froze. It was like 8th grade all over again. There stood Cody Littlehorse, my soul mate. He was dressed in stone washed jeans, a black cowboy shirt, black boots, and a charcoal gray Stetson. Tears began to run down my cheeks as I walked over to Cody and gave him a big bear hug, not caring how it looked or what anyone in the airport thought about it. Then he told me that Mr. Maxwell sent him to pick me up, and bring me to the hospital as soon as possible. We went to retrieve my luggage and then we hurried off to the hospital. Cody told me that my granddad tracked him down in a little town in Washington about three weeks ago and offered him a position with M&M Electronics. Cody told me he got here yesterday morning and he was with my granddad when he had his heart-a-tack. I also found out that Cody had a Bachelor's degree in Computer Programming and he was specializing in Software Engineering and web design. He told me that he still loved horses, fishing, and working with children. Then he told me he never stopped loving me. When I was able to speak I told him that I also had a Bachelor's degree in Computer Programming, and I also was specializing in Software Engineering and web design. I also told him he was my soul mate and I never stopped loving him either. Before we knew it we were pulling into the hospital's parking lot. I got out of his Land Rover, took a deep breath and then headed into the hospital. Mr. Maxwell met us in the hospital lobby and filled me in on my granddad's condition, and then he took us up to his room. Cody and Mr. Maxwell stopped just outside of my granddad's room and when they encouraged me to go on in alone, it really sank in that my granddad was dying. When I pushed the door open and walked into his room there was my granddad laying in his bed hooked up to all kinds of wires and machines. Before walking over to his bedside I silently prayed. Dear Lord, I love him so much, please let me tell him goodbye if you're going to take him home. Help me Lord; I want him to know how much he means to me. Amen. I took his frail hand into mine and began to tell him just how much I loved him an what he means to me. As I was talking to him he opened his eyes, smiled at me and softly began to speak. "Oh Shawn, I knew you would come." He said in a very weak voice. I just nodded my head because I couldn't trust my voice to speak. "I am so proud of you, I love you Shawn. I found Cody for you. I hope you and him are happy together." He said with a big smile on his face and tears running down his cheeks. Those would be the last words my granddad would ever say to me. "I love you too Granddad, you are my hero." I choked out through racking sobs. My granddad smiled at me, took a deep breath and died as I stood there holding his hand and crying my eyes out. Less than a minute after my granddad died a doctor and nurse came hurrying into my granddad's room, examined him, turned off the machines, and pronounced him dead. I felt like my entire world had collapsed and I was all alone. As I stood there in a daze with tears streaming down my cheeks I felt Cody's arm wrap around me and I heard him say, "I love you Shawn Matthews and I'll never leave you again." Cody and I walked out of my granddad's room where Mr. Maxwell gave me a hug and told me how sorry he was and that my granddad loved me very much. He told me he needed to talk to me in the next couple of days about my granddad's will and if he could help with any of the arrangements just let him know. Cody and I left the hospital and stopped at Harrison's funeral home and made arrangements for them to pick up my granddad from the hospital. I told Mr. Harrison I would be back in the morning to make the funeral arrangements, and then I told Cody to take me home.
