Turning eleven probably made him feel grown, especially since he was starting middle school in the fall. Donnie and I were thirteen and would be eighth graders by then, so we especially felt grown with just a year left before high school. Today, Sammy had on a sleeveless hoodie in navy-blue, along with jersey shorts in the same color, black socks, and black sneakers. What an odd choice for summertime, unlike the bright blues and yellows for the party decorations. Granted, it wasn't sweltering hot like the past week, but it still made me feel hot looking at it---Donnie and I wore tank tops, shorts, and flip-flops in light colors. Now that I thought about it, Sammy had been wearing a lot of dark colors lately, and even his music preference seemed less cheery than before. Oddly enough, I'd recently had a dream about being the light in his supposed dark world, even though he didn't strike me as the dark type. Sammy still looked nice, though. His dark brown hair and pale skin always made him look like a little Snow White boy. His blue eyes were like bright and shiny marbles, making me smile effortlessly. Okay, he didn't just look nice; he was super cute! He often made me feel stuff in my heart and especially below, just like Donnie did for extra confusion. In a perfect world, I could have both at the same time, but that wasn't normal in town, let alone two boys together. I still chuckled at the sight of Sammy's peculiar birthday cake, big and blue. It was supposed to be shaped like a whole peanut but ended up looking like two testicles, and the two yellow candles shaped like number ones didn't help with being centered like all birthday candles were. Was Ralphie trying to be funny when he'd suggested it? Poor Sammy. He'd thought it was a cool idea and didn't realize the hidden meaning. Meanwhile, Ralphie, who was still wet in his red swim trunks after swimming in the nearby lake with his high school friends, talked to his on-again-off-again girlfriend for most of the party. Every time they were together, Donnie, Sammy, and I were practically ghosts. Was that how romance worked? If so, what was the point? Sammy and Ralphie's parents called everyone to gather around the small table where the cake and plastic utensils were. It was time to sing "Happy Birthday", and Donnie stood next to me as we watched Sammy anticipating the moment. Standing in front of his candlelit birthday cake, Sammy pondered his wish, all while looking straight at me for some reason, given the high number of people here. Why was he staring at me with a blushing smile? It felt like the longest of seconds, but it also surprised me with an erection that I immediately had to hide. After cautiously glancing around, I dug my hands into my pockets and pushed them forward a bit to prevent a tent from showing, even though it was little. Finally, Sammy blew both number-one candles in an exaggerated way, probably for dramatic effect, and all of us cheered with happy smiles. When I glanced at Donnie, his smile seemed weaker than everyone else's. "Are you okay?" I asked in a low tone. He shrugged but didn't say a word, making me both curious and worried. Was he suddenly not feeling well? "Donnie, you can tell me." "No, it's stupid!" "Aww, why would it be stupid? Nothing you say is ever stupid to me, you know that." He paused for a moment, then sighed, still frowning. "Do you like Sammy? You know, like a boyfriend? Because we both know he likes you." Oh... Donnie must have seen Sammy staring at me while making his wish. It didn't seem like a big deal, but I could tell it was for Donnie. The last thing I wanted was for our friendship to be affected by it. What could be a solution? "See, Billy? You can't even give me an answer. You do, don't you?" I remained silent because there was no point in lying about it. Had it been that obvious all along, or had Donnie just figured it out? Sammy quickly came up to us with a big smile, always happy to be around us. "Billy, want to stay the night? You can sleep in my bed, I don't mind!" Donnie rolled his eyes. "Of course," he muttered. As much as I hated drama, he was my best friend, and I didn't want to ignore whatever conflicts we had. "Um...sure, Sammy." What else was I supposed to say? It wouldn't be fair to decline the harmless offer. Donnie sighed as if desperate, looking red and flustered. "Can I stay the night, too, Sammy? I can sleep on Ralphie's bed like I usually do." "Okay!" That brightened Sammy's mood even more, always oblivious to what really went on. For a boy who wore dark colors, his general mood was anything but. Besides, it was his birthday; he deserved to have fun. Donnie leaned close to my ear. "Maybe Ralphie will be my first instead of you." Oh... That was not what I'd expected! Donnie saving himself for me was supposed to be special. I might not be into romance, but our friendship turning into something more made me see things differently. Ralphie approached us, smirking. "Hey, little dorks, what's up?" Donnie managed a smile. "Me and Billy are staying the night." Then, he leaned close to Ralphie's ear and whispered something that suddenly made Ralphie look excited. "Nice, can't wait." He winked at me. "Thanks, Billy." Oh... For what? And wasn't Ralphie supposed to be ignoring us after getting back together with his girlfriend? Now, I was more jealous than I'd ever been, and I hated this feeling. =====BB===== braddyboyce.wordpress.com nifty.org/nifty/authors.html#braddyboyce (c) 2023, Braddy Boyce. All rights reserved.
