JR and RJ the Beginning The year was 1999 and I had just moved from the suburbs of Staten Island where the greatest city in the world was in my backyard to the suburbs of Orange County, CA where about the only exciting thing there is is Disneyland. Simply put I didn't know how life could be any worse. Sure not everything was great in NYC for me but it was the only life I knew and I couldn't imagine being so far away from the family that I loved so much, especially when it was all for a step-father and stepsister that I was particularly fond of having. I liked life the way it was just my mom and I in our own house living right down the street from the greatest uncle a guy could ever ask for. Well as it would turn out not everything was gonna be so bad about moving from one coast to the other. First a little background about me. My name is JR, well not really but it is my initials and what everyone calls me since I was named after my uncle and grandfather. I was born in 1989 and had a completely unmemorable experience when it came to my biological father being in my life. He split when I was about 12 months old. Things weren't that bad however. I had an awesome grandfather who was happy to have his first grandson and get to teach him all those same things he did with his sons, and a couple uncles who were awesome, and one that basically became my surrogate father. All in all life was pretty good. Then I turned 6 and my entire life was about to be turned upside down. It started when my mom finally finished getting her nursing degree and we were finally able to move out of her dad's house. Now that may not be the biggest deal but my grandpa was the coolest person to ever live and I hated the idea not getting to just walk down the hall to see him. It would be only a couple months later that he would get terminally ill first with Alzheimer's and then cancer. He would die when I was 7. That's when things would get really bad, as for the next 2.5 years I would be sexually abused by the babysitter who had taken the place of my grandpa. Finally a little before I turned 10 that secret would finally be exposed. However, as great as it was to have that chapter of my life over all was not great. My mom would be getting remarried and that afore mentioned move and crappy step-father and stepsister would become realities. Now if having to give everything that I knew wasn't bad enough I would also be making the transition of going from public school to Catholic school. Now sure either way I was on the other side of the U.S. so I was going to get used to new friends, but let's just say with everything that had happened to this point I wasn't the most devout Catholic person on the planet, and I wasn't keen on the idea of school that was going to sit there and say god has a plan for everyone and it is his will that makes everything happen. Screw god's plan the last 3+ years of my life were absolute shit and I couldn't understand how god could plan for a little kid to go through so much. Then on the first day of 5th would be how god and his plan would start to make up for all those recent crappy years. The first day of school I would meet the greatest friend that anyone could ever ask for and the one and only love of my life to this point. It would be on that day that I would meet RJ. Now by no means was this a love at first sight encounter. Actually for the first few months of school I was invisible to him. He was Mr. Popularity and I was the new kid that was way to into hockey and the New York Rangers. But things would begin to change in December. Shortly before we were about to have Christmas Break our teacher Mr. S assigned us one last project. We were required to do a presentation on one the Presidents' of the United States of America to that point. We were to work in pairs of two and because of the closeness of our birthdays RJ and I would be the team to have Grover Cleveland. This requirement would quickly become one the strongest friendships that I had ever seen. The project was finished and we managed to get an A and with that we would get the three weeks off for Christmas vocation. And for the first time this Catholic school thing didn't seem so bad. I was starting to develop a friendship with the cool kid at school and we got three weeks and not two off for Christmas like the public schools did. I guess it didn't hurt either that at least Christmas would be normal and spent in New York like the 10 before. However, it would be when we got home from New York shortly after New Year's that moving to California would finally seem to not be so bad. For the first few months we had lived in a rental house as our custom home was finished being built. When it finally came time to move into our new house I get the greatest surprise ever. RJ was to be my next door neighbor. That final week of Christmas vocation would be spent him and I building the inseparable bond that would keep us together like twins for the next 3.5 years.
