Please be waiting Sam!" "Nice catch son, but I think I would have let it slide just this once if you finished the word. We're almost there." "Thanks dad. This has been just an awful 24 hours, not even 24 hours. I'm just so worried because it's all my fault." "Virgil, did you force Sam to undress? Or do anything else once you were in that condition?" "No, of course not." "Well then, it's not all your fault. Sam was a willing participant. He just didn't handle the consequences as calmly as you did." "I was calm? Ha. But it all started because of something I said that I've wished a thousand times since last night I never said." "I understand how you feel. But put that aside because now you just need to be there for your friend. He's so scared his parents are going to be mad. You need to support him as much as you can until he realizes everything WILL be OK." "I will. And thanks for being so understanding dad." "You're welcome. You may not realize it but I was a teenage boy once too. I don't know exactly what you did, and you don't ever need to tell me, but let's just say I may have done it myself when I was young." Wow, dad just admitted he fooled around with other boys? Maybe what we did wasn't so bad. "So, you're not disappointed in me?" "No, of course not. Like I said earlier, it's not uncommon for boys your age to experiment sexually with other boys. I'm not necessarily happy you're growing up so fast, but I know it's part of life. Okay, here we are. Do you see Sam anywhere?" "Thanks. Oh boy, no I don't... Oh, there he is, I guess he was hiding behind that post." We stop the truck in front of Sam and he gets in the back seat, where I'm sitting. "Hi Mr. Caine. Thanks for coming to get me." "You're welcome. Where's your bike?" "Oh, I forgot about that. It's over by the main entrance near Sears, locked to the bike rack. I hope." He didn't say hi to me. Is he mad at me because I started all this? "Sam, I'm so glad you're OK. I, we, were all so worried when we found out you hadn't gone home." "Uh huh. Can we just sit quietly? I'm really not looking forward to going home." "OK. But everything will be alright." "If you say so." Yeah, he's still upset about all this. Hopefully he doesn't hate me. I'll just have to let him get home, see everything is OK and then we'll be OK again. We get to the bike rack, Sam and my dad get out to put it in the truck's bed and we quietly drive to Sam's house. "Thanks again for the ride. I'll see you when I can Virgil. At least in school I guess." What? Not before then? Oh god, I really fucked things up. He hates me and doesn't even want to be friends anymore. "We'll walk up with you if it will make you feel any better." "Yes, that would help. Thanks." So sad. And afraid. I'm not sure who is in a worse mood, Sam because he's afraid or me because our friendship may be over. CHAPTER 5 - Trying to be Patient Maureen Lassiter "Goodbye Roger and Linda. And thank you so much Virgil for coming to fill us in. I know it was hard. He sounded so scared based on your account." "You're welcome. He is. Bye" "Goodnight." "Night." I'm so relieved Sam is OK, but I'm worried about Phil. He was too quiet during our discussion and when he did speak, it seemed like he was trying to hold in an explosion. "Honey, I could tell you were angry while the Caines were here. I hope you won't do anything rash when Sam gets home." "Angry? How about fucking pissed off that my son turned out being a poof. I almost wish he DID run away." "Phil, you can't really mean that." "No? It's better than hoping he got picked up by some perv and sold into a sex ring. But he might enjoy that too much." I could tell I wasn't going to be able to say anything to change his mind or at least calm him down. I knew he was 'manly' but I didn't think he was so homophobic. Well, no matter what it takes, he's not going to hurt Sam or kick him out. Bobby I heard the phone ring a little while ago. It's way past my normal bed time, but there's no way I can fall asleep worrying about Sam. I snuck out to the top of the stairs to listen. I thought hopefully it's something good about Sam. I could only hear mom's side of the conversation, but I'm soooo happy now. "Hello? Oh yes, Virgil. Sam called you and he's OK? ... Oh, thank God. I'll have to let the police know to call off the search. Thank you for calling back. We'll see you soon... Yes, thank you again, bye." Sam's coming home! I'll take the spanking I'm going to get for being out of bed, but I'm going down there when he gets home. It's hard to believe he was gone only a few hours, I missed him so much. Time to park it at my window, I can just see the end of the driveway so I'll know when Virgil's family will be here to drop him off. Sam Moment of truth. We just parked in my driveway. 30 seconds or so of freedom left I bet. I'm walking in behind Mr. Caine so dad can't kill me right away. No, he wouldn't kill me in front of them, he'll wait until they're gone. Maybe even wait until mom's asleep. God, the bushes along the sidewalk make it look like the 'Green Mile' in the dark. How fitting. I'm heading to my execution, it may as well look like death row. "I-I don't w-want to go in." "Sam, everything will be OK. We spoke to your parents earlier, they were understanding." "You don't know my father Mr. Caine. He probably seemed like sugar and spice, but I bet inside he was all piss and vinegar." "Sam. Give him a chance." "Dad, Mr. Lassiter did look like he was going to blow a fuse this afternoon." "You're both projecting your fears and turning them into his hatred." "But dad." "No buts. Let's get out of the truck and go inside." Bobby "Bobby! You'll get your ass upstairs and back into bed if you know what's good for you." "I want to see Sam." "I'm NOT telling you again." "Oh, okay. SAM, I'M GLAD YOU'RE HOME." "GO!" "I'm going dad." But I'm listening at the top of the stairs again you butthead. And you won't know, so you can't stop me. Nyah. Phil Lassiter "Ding dong" Great, they brought him to the door. Couldn't let the little pansy walk in by himself. Well, they're not staying long then I'll teach him a lesson he'll never forget. "Why don't you get it Maureen? I bet Sammy-pammy won't want to see my face right away." "Phil, please. At least give the boy a chance to explain himself. Maybe it's not as bad as you think." "I'll try, but I know it's worse than I think." She opens the door all sweet and nice. No wonder the kid's a fairy. Probably the little one is too. "Sam. I'm so glad you're OK. Roger, Virgil, thanks for bringing him home. Do you want to come in?" "Please come in with me?" "Okay, but we know it's late, we'll just stay long enough to let Sam settle down a bit after he sees everything will be OK." "Thanks Mr. Caine." Sam OK, so far so good. Dad's not part of the welcoming committee. Maybe he left instead of kicking me out. Shit, nope, there he is in the living room. I'm not saying a damn thing until I have to. I'll probably just cry anyway. Why did I agree to come home? Phil "Hello Roger. You don't need to stay. This is a family matter. Thanks for bringing the boy home." And I use the term boy very loosely. "Sam's really afraid you're going to be mad at him. I think he wants us to stay for a bit." "I don't care what the little shit wants. You'll leave now." Am I going to have to throw the other little fairy and his faggy father out physically? I will if I have to. Gladly. "Phil. Be reasonable." "You can leave with them too Maureen if you're not going to let me handle this my way." Ha! She thinks getting in between me and the fairy is going to stop me? "No. I'm not going to let you hurt him." "He needs a hurting. Now get out of my way. Sam. Get over here." I reach for his arm to pull him closer and all I see is stars. Damn, Roger hits har..... Roger "Oh, geez. I'm sorry Maureen. I just reacted. It looked like he was going to rip Sam's arm off." "No. I'm glad you did it. I've been trying to get him to be reasonable all evening. As you can obviously see. I failed. I don't know what I'm going to do. When he wakes up, he'll be a wild man." "Then you and Sam should come back to our house. Give him a chance to cool off, if that's possible." "I'm coming too. You c-can't leave me h-here." Bobby comes running down the stairs crying. "Please mom. Let's go with them. I just knew it was going to be something like this." "Oh. I just don't know... Okay, why don't you take Bobby back upstairs and get a change of clothes, your toothbrush, pajamas, whatever. I'll do the same. I guess. Oh, this is going to turn out so badly." "Come on Bobby. We'll put our stuff in my backpack." "O-okay." "I'll give Linda a quick call on the way. I know she won't mind, but I don't want to surprise her by walking in with three extra people. Wait, what about Steven?" "He's not home yet. I'll give him a call too and let him know what's going on. Is it OK if he shows up a little later if he wants to? I don't think he will, Phil's never had any problems with any of the kids before, and there's no doubt that Steven's straight. Oh no. Okay, I'm glad Sam went upstairs already, that wouldn't have sounded nice from his perspective. Sorry Virgil if that bothered you. I'm so flustered." "It's OK." "Yes, we can leave it up to him, but it would be nice to know if he was coming or not. I'd want to lock up." "Yes, okay. I'll ask him when I call. I hope Phil's going to be OK." I'd come off as too much of an asshole if I spoke what I'm thinking. I hope the bastard never wakes up. Looking at Virgil, I'd bet he agrees. In the Caine's truck "Hi Linda... Yeah, we're on our way back now, but there's been a little bit of a hiccup. Maureen and the two younger boys are coming back with us... Well, let's just say Sam was right to be afraid. I'll fill you in more when we get there, just didn't want to surprise you... Yeah, that's a good idea. We'll be there in a minute. Bye... Maureen, Linda's making up the guest room for you and getting a couple sleeping bags for the boys in Virgil's room." "Thank you Roger. I don't know what I would have done if we had to stay. I never knew he was that way." "No worries. Here we are. The door should be open, just go right in. Virgil, stay here with me a minute, please?" "Sure dad." They wait until the Lassiters get inside. "I know I probably don't have to tell you this, but no funny stuff after you boys go to bed. Let's not make a bad situation worse." "Yeah dad. I kind of doubt there will ever be any more 'funny stuff' between Sam and me anyway." Phil Ohhhh, achin' my head. What the hell? Oh yeah, now I remember, the little pansy's father blind-sided me. Well, he'll get a lesson too. Ow. As soon as it doesn't hurt my head to move. I guess Maureen, the fairy and Bobby went with them. He's 11 now. I think he needs to start using a grown up name before he turns out like the other one. I can't even say his name I'm so mad. I'm mad at Roger too. What right does he have to deck me? In my own home yet! Yeah, he'll be sorry he did that. I need to go get a couple aspirin and sit on the couch for just a minute to deaden this fuckin' headache. That asshole's going to have a lot more than a headache when I get through with him. Shit. What happened? Fuck, I passed out again. It's after 1 AM. First things first, some alcoholic courage. After a half dozen shots of bourbon, I'm ready. I'll wake the whole lot of them up and bang on the door until they let me in. Of course they probably won't let me in. Some other way... Sam "I'm sorry I've been such a wuss Virgil. I bet you thought I hated you. I was just so scared my father was going to react how he did, I couldn't think about anything else." "Yeah, I was worried you hated me too. Apology accepted." "Virgil, do you think I can get one of the sleeping bags now? I'm so tired. Sam, I'm glad you're OK and I wish dad wasn't so much of a butthead." "Bobby, that's not nice calling dad that." "Well, it's true." "Yeah. I suppose it is." "Virgil, I don't care if Bobby knows this, but can I sleep with you so you can hold me? I don't want to even feel like I'm alone." "Of course. The bed's a full-size, so there's enough room for both of us. I do need to hit the bathroom first, how about you guys?" "Yeah." "Yup." "Okay, I'll wait, Sam you know where it is, show Bobby and I'll go when you're both done. Then we can get some sleep. I'm fuckin' tired too. It's been a hell of a day." "You can say that again." Phil Geez, I'm glad there was only that one car on the road. It looked like it had a hundred headlights. Fuck. Which house is theirs? I think it's this one. Kill the headlights so they don't wake anybody. I want that pleasure myself. I stumble up to the door. God, I'm still dizzy from that asshole's punch. Well, he's going to get it worse if I have my choice. Thump! Thump! "Wake up in there! I want my family back. Open up!" "Bill... Bill" "Huh, what?" "There's some crazy man at the door. I think he said something about wanting his family back." "You sure you weren't dreaming?" Thump! Thump! Thump! "Let me the fuck in." "Call the cops Ann. I'll go downstairs and see if I can convince him he has the wrong house." "Be careful." "I will. I'll just go look out the side windows of the door until the cops get here." Finaly, I see a light go on, someone's coming down. I hope it's that asshole Roger. I'm ready for him. "Open up! I have a score to settle with you." There he is the asshole. I can see him through the sidelights. Just a little closer. Bang! Yes, I got him. Now he'll be sorry. "Whoop! whoop!" What the fuck is that? "This is the police. Drop your weapon." Oh fuck. What did I do? I turn around to look. Fuck that car was a cop. Now there's another one. "Don't move and drop the weapon!" Clang. The gun hits the porch and I realize how fucked I am. Linda "Roger. Was that a gunshot?" "Huh, yeah it sounded like one. Let me look out the window, see what's going on." "No. How do you know it's safe?" "I'll just peek from the sides. Holy shit, there are two cop cars outside. There's someone on the Robinson's porch across the street. Not enough light to see. Whoa, that searchlight is bright. Holy shit. I think it's Phil." "You're kidding. What would he be doing there?" "I guess he thought that was our house. Good thing he was only here that one time, he might have gotten it right. The cops have him on the ground and cuffed. I'm going outside to see what's what." "Be careful." "It's OK, he's flat on the ground." Sam "What was that? It woke me up, did you hear it Virgil?" "Yeah, it was probably just a car backfiring. Go back to sleep." "Yeah, you're probably right." Roger As soon as I open my door there's a cop at the bottom of the driveway. "Sir, stay inside. We don't know how many shooters there are." "Is everyone OK? I think I know who he is. If I'm right, he's alone." The cop heads up the driveway and sidewalk to the door. Meanwhile Linda steps up behind me. "You think you know him? He doesn't have any ID on him, I guess it would save us a lot of trouble if you come out and be sure. Linda's not liking that idea in the least. "No Roger. Wait until they know how it is, it may not be Phil and whoever it is may not be alone." From across the street in both directions we hear 'Clear this way.' So I follow the cop out. By this time the shooter is in the back of one of the cop cars. As we walk up to it we hear from the inside... "You mother fucker. If you didn't steal my family..." "That's him. Phil Lassiter. Our boys had a, um, situation today that he wasn't very happy about. 12 and 13 year olds experimenting if you catch my drift. We brought his son home and he overeacted." "Arrest that mother fucker. I want to press assault charges." "You just quiet down for now Mr. Lassiter. We'll get to the bottom of this." "Yeah, fuck you too pig." "Take him away. Guess he won't be using an insanity defense after that exchange." Just then an ambulance pulls up to the Robinson's house. Ann opens up the door. The spotlights are still on and I can see she's upset. "Is Bill OK? The man who lives there?" "He should be. Gunshot wound in the shoulder, not life threatening. We'll let you go for now Mr..." "Caine." "Mr. Caine. We'll need you to come down to the station in the morning and give a statement. Obviously you know enough about what happened to clear this up pretty quickly. 9:00 OK?" "I'll be there." Virgil "Boys. Breakfast." Mom's knocking on the door. I look to see what time it is. 9:15. Fuck, it feels like I just fell asleep. Sam's curled up against me. I almost don't have the heart to wake him, but I gotta pee like a racehorse. "Sam. Wake up. I gotta pee." "Virgil? Huh, what are you doing here?" "I live here. It's my bedroom dumbass. Let me up and I'll remind you when I get back." Sam must have blacked out the whole episode from last night. Anyway, pee time. "Bobby, wake up. My mom's got breakfast ready. I'm going to take a pee." "OK. I gotta follow you so hurry up." "I will." Sam Well, we're all peed out and downstairs getting ready to sit down for breakfast. My mom is here too. It's coming back to me what happened. Dad blew a gasket. Mr. Caine belted him and we stayed here last night. I guess it really happened. "Mom, where's dad?" "Sit down and eat Virgil honey, we'll fill you in after you eat." "Fill us in? More happened? What?" "What part of after you eat didn't you understand?" I love how Virgil's mom can joke with him like that. Dad never lets mom treat us like humans, she needs to play drill seargent whenever he's around. Maybe his dad's in jail for belting my dad. My turn to make a joke. Um, no, maybe it's not a good idea to say that. Breakfast is over and our moms get this serious look on their faces. I know the news can't be good. Did Virgil's dad kill mine with one punch? Shit I hope not. I don't want him dead. Gone would be nice, but not dead. Nor would I want Virgil's dad to really go to jail. "Fortunately you boys slept through the excitement last night, or rather early this morning. It's a good thing Virgil's bedroom is on the back side of the house. You wouldn't have wanted to have seen this." "What?" "What?" "What happened?" The three of us can't seem to wait for the tale to be told fast enough. "I'm getting there. After we all went to bed, we heard a gunshot." "I didn't think it was a car backfiring." "You heard it Sam? No it wasn't a car. Apparently your father decided he wanted some level of revenge anaginst Virgil's dad..." "HE SHOT DAD????" "No. Just wait and listen. He got the houses mixed up and knocked on the Robinson's door. When he saw Mr. Robinson inside, I guess he thought it was Virgil's dad and shot him in the shoulder. He's going to be OK, but Sam, Bobby, your dad's in jail. I'm not sure what the charges will be, but Mr. Caine is at the police station now telling him what we know." "Is dad going to be OK with hitting Mr. L?" "Yes, I don't think that will be a problem since he was protecting Sam. Unfortunatley, we'll just have to wait to see exactly what happens next." "I hope they keep him there forever." "Me too." "Sam, Bobby, you can't mean that?" "Sorry Mrs. Caine, but the key word there is mean. He's mean and I'm pretty sure Bobby and me mean it." "Yeah." "Why don't you boys help Mrs. Caine clean up and then go play some video games or something until Mr. Caine gets back." We spend a few minutes helping clean up from breakfast. "OK. Virgil and I have some talking to do now. Come on Virge, Bobby." "You want me to come too?" "Yeah. It's something you'll end up finding out about soon enough anyway." Next up - "Jail, and coming out" Author's Note Wow, that took one hell of a turn. I ask you, who saw that coming? I sure didn't when I started this chapter. Heck, it wasn't even one of the two ideas I had for the next steps when I started it. Thanks to those of you who have sent email. I appreciate the comments, good or bad. Feel free to drop me a line if you haven't already. LRW
