If this is not to your liking, not legal where you live or you are under 18 years of age please leave. My Daryl This story starts with me, my name is brad, at my usual after school activity. I guess I should tell you a little about myself. I am 5 feet 3 inches tall, I have light brown, almost chocolate looking, hair that is cut In what is called a gentleman style. I have dark green eyes. I have fairly dark complexion which has nothing to do with being in the sun. I am 13 years old small and thin but with a heart as big as all outdoors, oh did I mention that I am Gay I was just getting ready to head over to the local hospital, were I volunteer 4 days a week working in the pediatrics ward playing with the kids and being friends to some that are far from home and miss family and friends. I was talked into this by my mom who is a nurse here and thought that as a hyper kid with a lot of time on my hands that it would be good for me. Once I got into it I had to admit that these kids really are special. There was this one boy there who had been there off and on for four years, he was 11 and suffering for Hodgkin's disease. His name was Daryl, he had a sense of humor that was just unbelievable, He was 4 foot 9 inches blonde hair that was falling out and weighed about 80 pounds. He was my pride and joy. I always looked forward to seeing him on days when I was a little under the weather. He always had a smile on his face and when I would get ready to leave he would not let me go without give me a hug and saying thanks. I was watching a movie at the house one day and and I was very sad. the move was about a little boy about Daryl's age that had A.I.D.S. It was called THE CURE. there were parts in the movie that made me cry and others that made me laugh. I cried like a baby at the end of the movie when the little boy died. I had gone to the hospital the following day and Daryl asked if I watched a lot of movies and I said yes. I was quite surprised when Daryl told me his favorite movie was THE CURE. I mentioned that I had just seen it yesterday and that I thought that it was a great movie but also very sad. He look at me and said why. I had such a hard trying to explain that The little boy being sick made me unhappy, then at the end when he died I just cried. He looked at me and said you know we all die just some sooner then others. What he was saying was beginning to scare me a little bit. I came in the next afternoon and as it was no surprise to see some of the regular kid had gone home for the weekend I got there and did my usual things play games with some of the kids some I would wheel around in wheel chairs, and some I would just sit and read stories to. I have always tried to keep my head while I am there but I was not able to do that with Daryl. That little guy just snuck right into my heart. He would usually go home on Friday and then be back on Sunday for the treatments that he would get during the week. I would come down and be there on Monday. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Sometimes I would switch days and sometime I would go in for 5 or 6 days. I really like going and I love working with all the kids. I came in on Monday and one of the other kids told my that Daryl was here earlier but the doctor came and got him a while ago. The kids on the floor just get upset when someone leaves during the day and are gone for any length of time. I had read some stories played some games and wheeled some kids around in the wheel chair. I had been there for nearly 4 hours and Daryl had not been brought back yet, now I was starting to worry. I went to the nurses station and inquired about Daryl and was told that he was in intensive care I had to go see him. I got to the second floor and the elevator door opened and I went to the nurses station and asked about Daryl. I was told that only family members could visit. I said But I volunteer, and wanted to know why I could not see him. then a lady came out of one of the rooms and came up to me and asked if my name was Brad. I said yes, she looked at the nurse and said it was ok, then asked me to follow her. I did and she went into the same room where I found Daryl. I asked if she was Daryl's mom and she said the Daryl's mom died three years ago and that he had been living in a orphanage. we sat and talked and she told my that Daryl did nothing but talk about bard on the weekends when he was there. I aksed if he had any other family and was told no. I asked if I could talk to him and she said for a couple minutes. I stood and walked to the side of the bed. and said Daryl it's my Brad He opened his eyes and smiled at me and said that I was the closest thing to family he can remember. I said how would you you like to be my real brother his eyes got big and he said really. I said really as soon as you get to go home. He asked if I would be his real brother, and I said you bet. He took my hand and squeezed it and said Brad I love. I said I loved him to. I pulled up a chair and sat the for a while. I asked if I could come back in a little bitand the lady said yes. I went out to the nurses station and called my mom and told here where I was so she would not worry, She said she would come get me and I said OK. I wemt back in and took Daryl's hand he smiled at me and closed his eyes. I sat there for about 20 minutes when the machine started to beep. The nurse came in and asked us to step out for a minute. That was the last time I ever saw Daryl. He died that night and I have never been able to go back to the hospital konwing that that was where Daryl, My Daryl died. This story is dedicated to all the Daryl's that have left this world without really being known but to just a few people, They were not famous their passing was news worthy. But to all the loved ones that have lost the young children as I lost my brother at the age of 11, we miss you all and think of you often knowing that you are in heave watching over us. If you wouls like to let me know what you think of this story that would be great My email is spiderwick1@hotmail.com thanks for reading
