Chapter Two

There was a chill in the air tonight, Jake was almost sure snow was on the way. He was feeling a little anxious as it was getting close to 11pm and Carter wasn't back from the Jensen's yet. Carter was head over hills for Paul Jensen's daughter Katy, and tried to spend every spare minute with her. It was just a matter of time now till the two decided to marry and set up their own house, but as long as Carter was under his roof, Jake couldn't help but worry about him. Maggie came and stood beside him to stare out into the darkness.

"Any sign of him yet?" she asked Jake.

"No, not yet" he said, at least he wasn't the only one worried.

They sat back down on the sofa and quietly watched the fireplace. At some point they must have fallen asleep; they were startled when the door opened and Carter came in. Jake looked at his pocket watch; 12:15am.

"What are you two still doing up?" Carter asked.

"Praying that you hadn't run into a tree and gotten yourself killed" Maggie told him.

"You know better than that, Mom" he said, "I just lost track of time."

"Seems to happen a lot these days" Jake said, "your mother and I can't sleep if we're worrying about you. I know you don't understand that; but you will when you have kids of your own."

"Well, speaking of that, me and Katy are ready to set a date" he said.

"When are you thinking about?" Maggie asked him.

"Probably in the next week or so. Katy said she hasn't had monthlies for two months. Mrs. Jensen is pretty sure that it's for real" Carter said quietly. Jake and Maggie sat in stunned silence for a time; letting the new sink in.

"Well, we figured you two would end up together. You're as thick with each other as your mama and I were back in the day" Jake said, "only thing worries me, is winter's coming. I hope we have enough fair days to get you a house built."

"Go on up to bed, we'll discuss it more in the morning" Maggie told Carter.

"Yes, ma'am. Good night" he said, climbing the stairs.

Maggie looked at Jake, she could see the stress in his face. She reached over and smoothed his hair, trying to comfort him.

"Everything will be all right, honey. This is how we intended things to work out. For our community to grow there has to be births" Maggie said.

"I just hate losing my number one" Jake said "and the Grandpa thing makes me feel really old." He sat looking at the embers of fire in the fireplace a minute, then got up and laid another log on the fire. He and Maggie stretched out on the couch together and he drifted off into a dreamlike memory.

"See Mags, it'll be easy. All we need is basically a big box with a roof" Jake said, pushing the crude drawing around the table.

Maggie looked at the sketch very skeptically. "Where will we put the kids?" she asked.

"We don't have any kids" Jake said, looking up at his young wife who, for some reason, looked like she was almost glowing.

"We will in six months, more or less" she said, matter-of-factly. Jake, not fully processing what she'd said, just nodded vacantly for a second until his brain caught up.

"Wait...you're...?"

"Yes, love. You're about to be a daddy" she kissed him on the forehead, "so redraw your little plan. Make it at least 3 bedrooms."

"That'll blow the budget way up" he mumbled, still looking at the plan. It took a minute for the news to settle in. Finally, the gravity of what Maggie told him sunk into his brain and a huge smile exploded on his face. "Oh my God, I can't believe we're having a baby! I love you so much!" he said excitedly, as he stood and picked Maggie up in a huge bear-hug of an embrace.

"We'll name him Carter, after my dad" Jake said.

"What if she's a girl? That'll be kind of awkward" Maggie said giddily.

Jake sat back down and started drawing again, this time the plan was two floors. It's cheaper to build up than out; the bottom floor larger than the top. The first floor would have the big room serving as a combo living room/kitchen, behind that room would be the master bedroom and the pantry/armory/utility room. The upper floor was divided into two large rooms. "One for the boys and one for the girls" Jake said. This basic design was the one Maggie approved and the same that Jake took to the architect to be made up into real building plans.

"If he is a boy, we'll name him after both our fathers, Carter Nelson" Maggie said.

Carter Nelson Harper came into this world a little after 2am on the 30th of September, 2033. The country was reeling in the years following the economic collapse. Carter would be the only one of their children to be born in an actual hospital; hospitals had become a luxury for rich people. Carter was also the only child to be born truly American. In the years following his birth America, as it was, disappeared; devolving into a tangled mess of rural places such as the area Jake and his friends created, and the scavenger colonies that surrounded what was left of the cities. When the economy went to hell, the United States defaulted on repaying its debts to other countries. The Chinese decided they would call in their loans; this led to war. The 16th of October, 2033, only weeks after Carter was born, became known as The Day of Tears as nearly a billion people were evaporated in blazes of light. In the initial round of nuclear exchanges with China, several of the large U.S. population centers were decimated. New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC; all gone in flashes of light. Of course, in retaliation, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and others also disappeared from the map along with their millions of lives. By the time the bombs were dropping, the consortium of six families had already left `civilization' for the piece of land they named `Six Points Ranch' for the six families inhabiting it. The last images Jake remembered seeing before the internet went off permanently were those showing the blinding flash of light and mushroom cloud where New York had once stood.

Jake woke up in a cold sweat. Maggie was gone, the fire had died down again. He pulled out his pocket watch and held it at an angle to the light from the fireplace; 3:50. He got up and stumbled his way into the master bedroom, got into the big bed with Maggie and tried to go back to sleep but sleep was elusive.

He must have nodded off sometime; when he opened his weary eyes, dim daylight was streaming in through the curtains. He was on his back and Maggie's head rested in the junction of his shoulder. He yawned and tried to stay still, not wanting to wake her.

"The kids will be up soon" Maggie whispered.

"I thought you were asleep" he answered.

"I tossed and turned too. When I fell off the couch, I came in here" she said.

"First thing after breakfast, me and Carter will go over to Kowalski's and get Adam's opinion about building a house before winter sets in" Jake said.

"I'll go over and talk to Norma about wedding plans" Maggie said.

"I hate to leave Dix and Ben together in the same space too long, we may not have a house to come back to" Jake said.

"I'll put Sandra in charge when I leave. She'll keep those two in line" Maggie said.

Ben could tell something was up at breakfast, but nobody was talking about it. Since yesterday's brawl, he and Dixon were seated at opposite ends and sides of the table, probably best that way. Dad told them him and Carter had to do some errands early today and they took off right after breakfast. Then mom said she needed to run over to see Norma Jensen for a few minutes, then she said the dreaded words "Sandy is in charge while I'm gone." It wasn't that Sandy was mean or anything like that, it's just that she knew what was expected from mom and dad and she saw herself as an enforcer. She didn't take any crap off of any of us. While she and Laura started picking up the breakfast dishes, she said "I remember daddy saying that you two have laundry duty today. Get on it!" Dixon blew out a breath and started to complain, but when Sandra turned around and stared him down, he closed his mouth and got up and went out the back door. Ben followed along behind him.

Ben opened the door on the old cast iron pot belly stove and started a fire then added a couple of sticks of wood; it was freezing inside the laundry shed. Dixon picked up the big canvas hamper and dumped the clothes on the table for sorting. The two worked around each other, each mutually avoiding the other.

"This is your fault" Dixon muttered.

"How do you figure that?" Ben said incredulously.

"Any idiot would know to roll away from the mudhole" Dixon said.

"Well, only an asshole would push their brother off a moving four-wheeler, so I'd say you had a little more to do with it than I did" Ben said.

"Most people's brothers wouldn't be poking their brother in the back with a hard-on causing the brother to get pissed off and push them off a moving four-wheeler" Dixon said.

"I can't help when it does that" Ben said "I promise it wasn't because of you. It was just the movement and how close we were sitting. I don't feel that way about you, don't worry. I wouldn't try to do anything with you that you didn't want."

"I'm sorry I pushed you off. It's just ever since I saw you and Micah..." Dixon said.

"Dix, we never did any of that stuff until after we saw you and Jamie" Bennett interrupted.

"Me and Jamie were just fooling around, Ben, what you two do is serious" Dixon said "We're all supposed to grow up and make the next generation; you can't do that rooting around in another boy's butt." He picked up the light-colored clothes and started putting them in the washing machine, turning his back to Ben. He added the detergent and hit the button before he realized they hadn't switched on the circuit breaker for the laundry shed. When the washer and dryer were running all the house power was shunted to them until they finished. He walked outside and flipped the switch and watched the lights go out inside the house, then saw the flickering light as Sandy lit a lantern. When he walked back into the shed Ben was sitting at the folding table with his head in his hands.

"I can't help the way I feel" Ben said to Dixon. "Maybe, when the time comes, I can make myself do it with a girl, but its gross to me; I don't like girls that way. I wish I could explain to you how I feel about Micah. I'm happy when me and him are together, even if we're just talking or walking trails. Sometimes when the weather's bad and we can't see each other I get depressed. It's like he's the other half of me...I don't know how to explain it."

"You just did, it sounds like love," Dixon replied, "just love that's wrong." He felt bad as soon as he said it. "I'm sorry, Ben, I don't mean that. Let's have a truce. I'm tired of being mad all the time."

"Good. I'm tired of you being mad all the time" Ben said.

"I was really just afraid you'd tell mom and dad about me and Jamie doing stuff; you weren't supposed to be there that day. You said you and Micah were going to play in the barn."

"I'd never run and tell on you like that, Dixon. I hope you wouldn't do that to me either. I'll keep your secret if you'll keep mine."

"Deal. I'm sorry I've been such a dick lately" Dix said. Ben nodded, glad to (hopefully) have all of the animosity behind him. The door opened and Sandra came in.

"How's it going?" she said.

"First load is rinsing now, still have to do the colors and put them in the dryer" Dixon said.

"I meant your little spat, actually" she said.

"We're good" Ben said, "we worked it out."

"It's about time. You've got to let Bennett be who he is Dixon. He can't help who he loves" Sandy said.

"What?" Ben said, his eyes going wide as saucers.

"Bennett Jarvis Harper, I hope you didn't think I am so stupid that I can't see how you and Micah act around each other" she said.

"Do mom and dad know" Ben asked.

"I don't know if they've really paid attention or not, but I'll always be there for you baby brother" Sandra said, then doing a total change of subject, "Dix, do you know if Jamie is sweet on anybody right now?"

"I don't know, I haven't seen him in a while" Dix replied.

"Put your feelers out for me. The Halloween party is coming up and I'm hoping he'll ask me to go" she said.

"I'll see what I can find out" Dixon said, for some reason feeling a small pang of jealousy.

"You two get through as quick as you can, I need to make bread" she said as she walked back out.

"Guess I need to be a little less obvious" Ben said to Dix.

"I think it's just a Sandra thing" Dix said "If I didn't know, I wouldn't know, if you know what I mean."

They were folding the last of the colored clothes when the rattle of the diesel outside announced that mom was back. She had a sack of stuff like ribbons and bows as she went into the house. Ben and Dixon brought the armloads of clean clothes inside. Sandy and Laura separated them by who they belonged to and took them up to the bedrooms. Dix went back out and switched the breaker back off to throw the power back into the main house.

"What's up with all the decoration stuff?" Ben asked his mom.

"It's to make you ask questions" she said, ending that conversation.

As Jake and Carter pulled their ATVs up in the Kowalski's front yard, chickens scattered in every direction. Millie, Adam's golden retriever came running over and ran circle around the two as they tried to walk up to the porch. Adam came out and called her to him so they could walk.

"Hey guys! What brings you over so early?" Adam asked.

"Well Adam, we're going to need another house" Jake said, looking at Carter.

"So, you and Katy are making it official?" he asked Carter.

"Yes sir" Carter answered.

"Good deal! Come on out to the workshop and we'll see what we can come up with" Adam said walking toward the small white building behind the house. Inside, he rummaged around and pulled out a pasteboard tube with the property map inside.

"Where are you thinking about putting it?" he asked.

"You're the engineer, but what do you think about that hill above the creek at the back of the canyon?" Jake asked. Adam shook his head no.

"Too much extra upkeep. We'd have to build a bridge; you know how the creek gets up in spring" he said. "How about over here?" he pointed to an area between Jake's place and the Jensen's, south of the big field, a little clearing on the south side of the woods.

"Is it enough room?" Jake asked.

"Should be. High ground, shade, sure to be water for a well..." he said.

"The big question is whether we can get it done before winter knocks us out of commission" Jake said.

"We can probably get the shell up. Then we can work on it a little at a time if we have to. Why the rush?" Adam asked.

"Carter and Katy are going to have a little Carter" Jake said.

"Ooohhh. I see. I'll see how fast I can get the dried lumber in here. If the mill doesn't have enough, maybe we can get the scavengers to make a trip into Denver" he said, "Why don't we go over and mark off the site?"

"Why don't you two get out from under our feet? Go see your friends" mom told Ben and Dixon.

"Ok, I'll be over at Micah's" Ben said.

"I'll go with you; I need to talk to Jamie anyway" Dixon said.

"Wow. Are you two actually getting along today?" she said in amazement.

"Yeah, mom. We're trying to do better" Dixon told her.

"Be back for supper" she said. They walked outside to the four-wheeler that was left.

"I think I may have a solution" Bennett said "Let me drive, and you get on the back." Ben got on and fired the engine up, Dix got on they took off. About halfway to the Peterson's place Ben could feel something hard poking him at the top of his butt crack. He stopped and turned around to look at Dixon who had a shit-eating grin on his face.

"Okay, I see what you mean about not being able to help it, I get it. Now let's go" Dix said, his face bright red. He stuck a hand inside his pants and rearranged himself so his peter was pointing up toward his left hip instead of into his brother's back. The incident had left Ben with a rock hard of his own. When they arrived at the house Jamie was in the yard feeding the ducks and chickens. He said Micah's in the barn feeding the horses. Ben climbed off the ATV and pulled at the front of his pants trying to let his still half-hard dick drop down the leg of his jeans, then he took off to the barn. By the time he found Micah in the last horse stall, his dick was back to full mast again.

Ben tiptoed up behind Micah, who had both arms over the gate to the stall, and grabbed him and pressed his hard, jeans-covered peter into the concave space between Micah's cheeks. Micah jumped and turned around to find Ben and automatically covered his mouth with his own, driving his tongue into Ben's mouth.

"Too many people home, we'll have to go to the woods" Micah said, pulling his lover though the back side of the barn onto the trail leading back toward the creek. They had a spot where there was a thicket of bushes, they'd made a tunnel in the bushes to the middle where they had their little `fort'.

"I can't mess up these clothes" Ben said dropping his jeans before crawling into the thicket. Micah looked around and did the same following Ben and watching Ben's ass open and close as he crawled. When Ben stopped at the middle, Micah kept coming until his face was planted between the cheeks of Ben's ass, tongue first. He reached around and fondled Bennett's rapidly stiffening tube as he French-kissed the hole, which was beginning to gape open. Micah could already get two fingers in the opening with no trouble, but he kept toying with it and rubbing Ben's special spot that was causing him to leak a stream of sticky fluid. Micah caught the clear fluid in his hand and smeared it around the hole, then lined up and pushed his dick all the way into Ben; the sudden onslaught causing Ben to clench up on the intruder. Ben let out a small yelp and put his hand back in a motion telling Micah to wait a minute. He clamped and released about a dozen times and started to relax and push back on the dick. Micah took that as a sign that he was ready to go and began laying it on, slapping flesh on every stroke. When the hole started relaxing too much, he grabbed Ben's dick and started jacking him almost to a cum, then he'd release it. They went on like this for a while, but Micah wanted a turn too, so he pulled out and lay on his back on the old blanket and pulled Ben down on top of him. Ben pushed Micah's legs up and licked and sucked on his winking star, getting it somewhat lubed up then eased his cock into the tight hole. Micah had edged him for so long it only took him a few strokes and he emptied his balls into Micah's ass. When he pulled out Micah turned them over and began humping his hard cock against Ben's deflating one. Right at the end he sat upright and jacked himself off shooting drops of cum all over Ben's lower stomach. Ben pulled the corner of the blanket over and wiped up the mess. He knew Dixon would be ready to go soon, so they needed to get back. Micah was content after having climaxed, and was especially happy carrying part of Ben inside him. The walked back into the barn and Micah acted like he was finishing up with the horses. Dix and Jamie came in a few minutes later.

"You ready to go, `squirt'?" Dixon asked.

"Sure, Dixon" he answered, wondering where Dixon came up with `squirt'. As they got on the four-wheeler Dixon grabbed Ben's wrist and sat his hand against his neck, right in the middle of a `squirt' he hadn't cleaned off.

Ben turned a deep shade of red, but the good thing was, he didn't get hard on the way back home.
