One in particular, Quinn by name, has been seeking him out daily since the beginning of school a month ago. Of course the school has a policy against bullying but Quinn makes sure that there are no teachers or other staff members around when he engages in his favorite activity. Fortunately for Senan he has a good friend, Kenneth, that will stick up for him and make sure that no one bothers Senan, at least while he's around. The students who like to pick on the weak know that Kenneth is willing to fight to protect his friend and leave them alone, all except Qujinn, especially when his friends Jax Cooper and Davis Jackson are with him. Quinn seems to increase his bullying when his friends are around, he likes to show off for his friends "Look at Quinn over there Kenny, he's just waiting for someone to come along so he can ruin their day." Senan has a habit of staying alert for the bullies that make his life a daily hell. "Probably waiting for his goony friends to show up, why do you care, Senan? Let's go get lunch, I'm starved," Kenneth responds. Although he feels he can hold his own against Quinn he won't try when Senan is with him. He knows that Senan is a favorite target of Quinn and does everything he can to keep the two apart. Also, he isn't sure where Quinn's cohorts are, and if those two show during a confrontation Kenneth knows he could be in trouble. A moment more of watching to make sure that they can safely escape and the two boys leave their hiding spot to start walking towards the cafeteria, keeping an eye for the two others who seem to be around whenever Quinn is up to no good. "I care because I seem to be his main target lately and I don't want any of them to sneak up on me." While Senan keeps the conversation going they get their lunch and find a place where they can sit and eat together. They keep an eye out for Quinn and his companions as lunch is a particularly vulnerable time at the middle school for the bullies to attack, they use the busyness and general chaos that eating creates to find and isolate their targets, knowing that they would have up to twenty minutes before there was any chance of discovery. Senan and Kenneth finish their lunch, scrape the trays in the garbage can, and set them on the cleaning counter before they spot Quinn and his associates entering the eating area. "Just in time." Senan says as he sighs in relief, after lunch he and Kenneth usually spend the rest of lunch in the Library where they knew they would be safe. Suddenly Quinn makes a hard right turn and a beeline toward Senan, calling out to him as he walks closer. "Seman, buddy!" Using the nickname that he knows Senan hates more than anything else, "There you are, I was looking all over for you. Do you have the money you owe me?" As he gets closer his two allies, Jax and Davis, flank the other boys, cutting off any hope of escape. "What money? I don't owe you any money, and besides I don't have any money, in case you haven't noticed we are leaving the cafeteria, that means we've already eaten. I spent my money on my lunch." With that Senan tries to shoulder his way past Quinn's pal Davis but the taller boy isn't allowing it. "Listen shrimp", Davis tries to sound menacing but his voice cracking mars the attempt. "If Quinn says that you owe him money then you better pay up." The boy moves to take hold of Senan's shirt making sure that he won't be able to leave before Quinn is done tormenting him. "Mr. Jackson, I hope that you are only reaching out to brush crumbs from his shirt." All of the boys are startled as they recognize the voice of their Principal, Mr. Carson. Turning almost as one they see him walking towards them from his office down the hall. "I certainly can't think of any other reason for you to look as if you are about to violate the school policy on bullying." Mr. Carson times the finish of his warning to coincide to the time that he is standing in front of all the boys. "Oh, yeah, sure Mr. Carson. That's all, I thought he had some food on his shirt and was gonna make sure that it was gone is all." Davis replies as he lets go of the shirt and makes motions as if he is cleaning it. With that Jax and Davis quickly make their exit not wanting to stick around in case the Principal decides some actual punishment might be in order. This allows space for Senan and Kenneth to exit the cafeteria and go down the hall to their original destination, the library. Before Quinn can leave and join his friends he is stopped by Mr. Carson, "Quinn, I've been meaning to talk with you, how about you and I track down your coach." It might sound like a question but it really isn't and even if it is Quinn isn't enough of a trouble maker to defy the man. Within five minutes Quinn finds himself with the principal, at the office of his gym coach, standing there while the two men talk quietly. "Well, young man, I am glad that you're able to find the time to talk to me." Coach Phelps said. "I hear that you are having some trouble in your math class. I've been informed that there is a good possibility of you failing. You know what happens if you do fail math, right?" Quinn looks down at his feet, he has been dreading this moment ever since he had failed his last math test. "Yeah, I get kicked off the wrestling team. How can I stop that from happening?" He heard the whining and pleading in his voice and hated it but had no idea how to stop it from happening, being on the wrestling team means a lot to him, it is the one thing that makes his father proud of him. "Pick up your grades. Even if you can manage a C that will be enough to keep you on the team." Coach Phelps replied. "I suggest that you consider getting one of the other kids in your class to tutor you." At that moment Mr. Carson spoke up. "I think I know just who would be good for that. You might want to talk to Senan, I'm pretty sure he is passing the class with a solid A" Quinn feels his stomach turn at the thought of asking anybody for help, especially Senan. He thinks of the boy as a target, not an aid, but he felt desperate. "Fine, I'll ask him, I only have to do enough to pass right?" "That's correct but that doesn't mean getting him to do your work for you. Remember there will be a test at the end of the semester and you will need to pass it." Mr. Carson reminded him. Meantime Senan and Kenneth are in the library sitting and talking quietly by themselves. "I don't understand why they feel the need to pick on me." Quinn and his cohorts aren't Senan's favorite topic but it is one that occupies a large portion of his free time. "It's easy," Kenneth responds, "you're smart and they aren't. To them, you're different and happy, and that scares them. Therefore you must become what they think of as normal. You know, sad and miserable like them." "That makes no sense, you're just as smart as I am. Why don't they pick on you, or any of the other straight A students?" "First of all they do pick on other students but yes you are their favorite. Second, I am not as smart as you, I'm smart I'll agree with that but you are the one who skipped sixth grade and got here a year ahead of schedule." He smiles at his friend, even though Senan thinks his skipping a grade is a pain in his behind Kenneth is quite proud of his friend. As lunch ends the boys pick up their school books and head to their next class, one of the many they have together. They don't go to separate classes until their last class of the day when Kenneth goes to P.E. and Senan heads towards math. Seeing Quinn walking into math brings back to Senan's mind the incident at lunch and the fact that Quinn and his allies had been interrupted. Senan isn't looking forward to math today, he feels certain that Quinn is going to continue his harassment, and if he could come up with a way to skip class and not get in trouble for it he would do that. The two things that Senan has going for him is that he and Quinn didn't sit near each other and that Quinn doesn't have his allies with him, therefore anything he might do will not be backed up by anyone else. To Senan's surprise besides a few sideways glances, Quinn leaves him alone for the entire class. Whenever he looks at Quinn his head is buried in his math book. Senan is surprised when he's called up to the teacher's desk at the end of class and he's even more surprised to see Quinn standing there too when he walks to his teacher. "What's up Mr. P?" He asks, trying not to look at Quinn. "It's me. I need to talk to you." Quinn speaks up before the teacher can say anything. "I'm having trouble in math, a lot of trouble. In fact, if I don't improve soon I'm gonna flunk. I don't want to flunk." The more he speaks the darker his face gets, embarrassment and anger forces blood to rush to his cheeks. "If I flunk then I can't wrestle anymore. I can't wrestle, I'm going to get very angry. You don't want me to get angry." "Now Quinn, is that the best way to ask?" Their teacher speaks for the first time since Senan arrived at his desk. "Fine," he drags out the word, turning it into an exasperated reply. "Senan, I need help with math and despite everything, I keep getting told that you are the best person to help me. Can you make sure I don't get kicked off the wrestling team?" Senan looks at Quinn in surprise, this is the last thing he expects to hear from his main tormentor, and if not for his teacher sitting right there this whole time he would think that he's being set up for some type of prank. Senan looks at Quinn, trying to catch his eye but finding it difficult as the other boy refuses to make eye contact, refusing to look at him above his chin. "Maybe, I mean it depends on what you mean by help. I won't do your work for you if that's what you are asking. But I guess I could spend a few hours a week helping you understand the math concepts we're working on in class for the week." Mr. Pandey speaks up again. "It might take more than that. He is seriously behind in his assignments. Not only does he need to get the old assignments turned in but he then needs to be able to stay current and prepare to pass the rest of the tests for the semester." "Now wait a minute!" Quinn speaks loudly as he turns to the teacher, "I was told that I needed to pass the final test and that was all. No one said anything about any school work!" "It's all part of passing the class, Quinn. The test is an important, probably the most important, part of your grade but not all of it alone." Senan considers his options carefully, aware of how much power is being placed in his hands at this moment. "I can help, but I want two things from you before I agree to it. First I want you to promise to take this seriously, I'm not going to waste my time if you don't plan on really learning how to do the work." "I promise. Like I said if I don't then I get kicked off the wrestling team and I don't want that. What's the second thing?" "That will be determined at the first session, but don't worry it won't be anything horrible." Senan says as he looks at Quinn again, still trying to catch his eye. "Excellent! Then all that needs to be decided is the schedule, I recommend not too much, a couple of hours each day should do it. You don't want to overwhelm him and you need to make sure he has enough time to do his other homework as well. But when and where I shall leave up to you two, now scoot!" Their teacher waves them away and then turns to some papers on his desk. Leaving the classroom the two boys agree to meet the next day after school. Senan wants to meet at his house because he knows his mom will be there and will put a stop to anything if Quinn tries to cause trouble. Quinn counters with the fact that his house is just a few blocks from school so not only could they get there easier but they could also get the work started sooner and therefore get it over faster. Senan gets Quinn to promise that he won't have his friends show up while they are there and Quinn gets Senan to promise not to tell anyone that he is helping him, they both agree to the plan and exchange phone numbers in case any parents feel the need to confirm what is going on. Parting ways Senan meets up with Kenneth in front of the school. "There you are, I was wondering if Quinn and his goon squad had caught you somewhere. I was thinking of asking the Principal if he would help me look for you." Kenneth says as Senan walks up to him. "Nah, it's all good." Senan says, putting up a hand to interrupt his friend. "I was held up by Quinn but it was in math and Jax and Davis aren't in that class so no worries. You wouldn't believe what happened." After looking around to make sure no one could overhear them he continues talking before Kenneth can ask a question or posit a theory. "Quinn asked me to tutor him. Turns out that he's flunking math and if that happens then he can't wrestle anymore." "Oh, that would be terrible." Kenneth responds sarcastically. "Actually it would, he says getting kicked off the team would really piss him off. Can you imagine what he'd be like if he were pissed off? I'd rather help him and deal with his regular anger and stupidity. Besides, I think I have an idea that just might get him off my back. Maybe everyone's." He smiles at that thought and then the two boys race to the bus to get home. Kenneth usually goes to Senan's home after school but this day he has a doctor's appointment so he gets off at his own stop with a promise to call later. "So when are you going to start tutoring him?" It isn't until after dinner that Kenneth has a chance to call his friend, after he had gotten back from the doctor's office Kenneth had to do his homework which had taken him the rest of the afternoon. "Um, tomorrow. I guess I'm going to his house after school." Senan replies, hearing the nervousness in his voice. "What, that's crazy! Why are you going to go there? Can't you tutor him someplace safer, like your place, or the Library, or I don't know just about anywhere." "Quinn says his place is closer, I guess he lives within walking distance of the school. Besides he promises that his buddies wouldn't be there or show up while I was there." "How are you going to make sure he keeps that promise?" Kenneth challenges. "I got his phone number, my mom has already talked to his mom so if something happens I'll call her. She's already planning on getting me at five so if I need to I'll call early." Senan is nervous but he's hoping that having both sets of parents openly knowing what's going on will keep Quinn from doing anything stupid. "Remember, you can't tell anyone. If it gets out that I'm tutoring him I'm not sure what might happen and for me to get him to back off on the bullying I've got to make sure that this works." "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone. Unless you don't show up at school on Friday, then I'll call the police and tell them where you were and who you were with last." Kenneth laughs at his own joke but he's only half-kidding. He's very concerned for his friend and doesn't want to see him get hurt. The two boys talk for a little while longer, Senan asks about the doctor's appointment and is reassured that nothing is wrong, it was just a regular check-up. Both of them enjoy each other's company and do not want to end the conversation however Senan's mom reminds him that he still needs to take a bath before he goes to bed. "Okay, mom!" He calls out with his hand over the mouthpiece. "Well, I gotta go Kenneth. Mom says I need to take a bath." "Good, I didn't want to say anything but you were a little stinky on the bus today." Kenneth and Senan both laugh at this then say good night to each other as they hang up simultaneously. Senan doesn't sleep well that night, plagued by strange dreams he has to be woken twice by his father, and when he does get up and ready for school he is in a foul mood. Waiting for the bus doesn't help, all the younger kids are noisy and won't stand still, constantly bumping into him and not allowing him a chance to try and remember his dream. Usually, when Senan is in a bad mood Kenneth can get him out of it so he is looking forward to his friend getting on the bus that morning. However, when he sees Kenneth climb aboard the bus the sight of his friend only makes him feel more uneasy. He still doesn't remember his dream yet but he felt pretty sure that Kenneth is involved somehow. When Kenneth joins him Senan tries to fake a smile but feels that his friend can see right through it. "Nervous?" Kenneth asked his friend. "No, why would I be nervous? What's happened that I should be nervous about?" He tries to keep calm but inside he's thinking "Oh shit!! He knows! He knows that I had some sort of a weird dream and that he was in it!" "Oh, I don't know. Maybe because you're going home with the school bully after school?" Kenneth is careful not to say this too loud, in fact, he leans in and whispers it into Senan's ear. The effect is to send a thrill into Kenneth's body, he's been trying to figure out a way to get this close to his friend since the school year started. Senan sees his friend lean toward him and whisper in his ear and he wants to lean closer, he wonders to himself what it would feel like to have Kenneth's lips press against his skin. The only reason he doesn't is that he isn't sure how his friend would react. Besides that, they were on the school bus and Senan doesn't want to do anything to attract attention to them. These feelings he's experiencing are new to him and he isn't sure what to make of them, but he knows that until he has a chance to figure them out he doesn't want to act upon them or have anyone else know about them. "I had some sort of a bad dream last night and didn't sleep well. So I'm feeling pretty tired. Great day to start tutor- I mean to start my new job." He catches himself just in time to stop from saying the words that he'd gotten Kenneth not to say. "Maybe you can postpone him. Tell him you're not feeling well or something." Kenneth says, trying to be helpful. "No, I can't put this off. I told you I got plans to make things better for me and others. The longer I put this off the harder it's going to be." Then Senan leans in close to Kenneth's ear, wanting to see if he can duplicate the feeling his friend had just created in him. "I'm going to ask Quinn why he likes bullying me, if I know the reason for that maybe I can figure out a way to get him to stop." He discovers that having his lips that close to Kenneth's ear is just as exciting. He is hoping that maybe the bus will hit a bump and give him an excuse to press his lips against his friend but that doesn't happen. The day at school is unremarkable, they go to their classes, turn in their homework, try to avoid the school bullies. Unfortunately for Senan, his mood doesn't improve during the day. During math class, Senan notices that Quinn has his usual attitude in class, ignoring him and putting his head down, and not paying any attention in class. Part of Senan is hoping that Quinn will cancel the whole thing but then he remembers the greater goal he is trying to put into play and tells himself that he can get through this afternoon, that it will be no more than a couple of hours and then he will be finished for the day. As class ends Senan's hope for a last-minute change of plans are dashed as Quinn walks up to him with a large grin on his face. "Hey, Seman, are you ready to go?" He says as he walks up to Senan, putting his backpack over one shoulder as he does so. "You know I don't like it when you call me that." Senan says, not only has his mood not improved but he has no hope of it doing so, based on how his tutoring seems to be starting. Once again he thinks briefly about ending this before it begins, and once again he reminds himself that if he doesn't at least try to help Quinn then nothing will get better for him until they graduate from High School, and right now that seems very far away. Quinn had been held back in fourth grade and as a result, he is taller than most of the other kids in his grade and since Senan skipped a grade he is noticeably smaller than most of the other students making the difference in their height seem even greater than the other students. Quinn isn't trying to do anything to attract attention to himself but his size does draw attention to him as he goes through the hall and since most of the students know that they are best off to avoid Quinn they leave a wide-open space around him as they go by. All of this combines to make Senan feel quite self-conscious as he leaves the school with Quinn. Senan is used to riding the bus and having just a little way to go between the bus stop and his house, therefore unless it is raining, or looks like it might, he doesn't usually have a jacket with him. It comes as a surprise to him just how cold it is. The fall air, crisp and chilly, the wind, although not strong does go through him like a knife. The twenty minutes it takes to walk to Quinn's home seem to last forever to the boy that isn't wearing a jacket. "Kick your shoes off, mom doesn't like having dirt tracked through the house." Quinn says as he unlocks and opens the front door. After the two are shoeless and Quinn has hung his jacket up in the closet by the front door he does something that comes as a complete surprise to Senan; he starts acting nice. "You look like you're cold, would you like some hot chocolate?" He asks as he gestures for Senan to follow him to the kitchen. After getting them both some hot chocolate Quinn sits down at a table and gestures for Senan to do the same. Senan does and for the next five minutes the two boys sit across from each other at the table drinking their drink and staring at each other, not saying a thing. Finally, Quinn breaks the silence. "So, you said that there was something you wanted me to do before you would tutor me, what is it?" Quinn sits there waiting to hear what the other boy wants, a look of anticipation on his face. "Oh, yeah, that." Senan pauses for a moment, stalling for time by taking a drink of his hot chocolate, however that moment is ruined by the fact that his cup is empty. Looking disappointedly into his cup he starts talking again. " I want you to answer a question, and I want an honest answer too." "When have I been anything but honest to you? I promised you that none of my friends would be here and they aren't. I also promised that they wouldn't bother you on the way here and they didn't. Why do you think I would start lying now? So far I've kept my word, can you say the same thing?" That response brings Senan up short. It surprises him to think about it but Quinn is right, he has been nothing but honest so far. "No, I can't, I'm sorry but I did tell Kenneth. But I had to, we ride the bus together every day and he was going to wonder where I was. I told him to not tell anyone though and he's kept his word." "Okay, that's cool. I actually already figured out that you told him. I just wanted to see if you were going to be honest about it is all." Quinn stops and tries to take a drink from his cup, looks down, sees that it is empty, and frowns. "So, what is it you wanted to ask of me?" He asks, brInging the conversation back around to the original topic. The last few minutes were odd for Senan causing him to look at Quinn in a different light giving him a bit of hope thinking that maybe his idea could work, for in truth he wasn't holding out much hope before this. "Okay, here's my request; I want you to stop picking on me. I want you to stop being a bully at school." He looks at Quinn as he says this, trying not to show any fear as he puts his request out there so boldly, so in-your-face to Quinn. If he were to reject this then everything else wouldn't work and could very well make his life a living hell. Quinn smiles, then starts to laugh. Finally, he calms down and gets around to responding to the request. "That all depends on how well you do your job. If I pass the class then sure, no problem I'll owe you one for the help. If I end up getting kicked off the wrestling team then I can guarantee that the `bullying" as you call it, will get even worse. So, that being said should we get started?" Quinn takes him upstairs to his room and Senan is surprised to see how neat it is. Together they sit down at a desk in the room and pull out their math books. Senan decides to start by seeing what the other boy knows already and then deciding where to start. It doesn't take long for him to realize that Quinn has a good knowledge of basic math, could improve on his multiplication tables, and has no idea how Algebra works at all. They spend the rest of the afternoon on the basics of Algebra and Senan does the homework assigned to them today with him. Quinn does his homework by mimicking what Senan puts down on his paper and at first that bothers the younger boy but then he realizes that at the very least he did the writing himself and that he doesn't grasp the concepts enough yet to try and do them on his own. Senan's answer to this problem is to talk through the problem as he does it so at least Quinn is hearing the process. At one point Quinn's mom comes in to check on them but it's really just a "Hi, I'm Mrs. Morris. Nice to meet you." type of thing, and then she leaves them alone. Letting the two boys continue to do their work without her checking up on them brings a trace of relief to her mind. She knows what the two boys are supposed to be doing but until she sees them doing the work she hadn't been sure if it was going to go as planned or not. In fact, Senan got so into helping Quinn that it came as a surprise when he was told that his mother was downstairs waiting for him. Picking up his books and putting them back in his bag he goes downstairs saying good-bye to both Quinn and his mom as he leaves the house. Walking out to their car they see another car drive up and a man who looks like an older version of Quinn gets out, looking as if he had a bad day, Senan tries to be nice and says hello to him but is rebuffed. As Senan is getting into the car he hears the man comment on him being a new boy for his son to get in trouble with. Right after dinner, the phone rings at Senan's house. "Why don't you get that Senan? It's probably Kenneth. He called earlier and I told him when it would be a good time for him to call back and talk to you." "Hey Kenneth, what's going on?" He asks after making sure it was his friend. "Not much, just wanted to see how things went. You know, make sure you got out of there alive and not beaten up. So what was his house like? Did you meet his parents? Figured out why he's such a jerk yet?" Kenneth rapidly fires the questions at his friend, not giving him a chance to answer one before the next one gets asked. "Woah buddy slow down. His house looks normal, so does his room, his mom is okay, all she did was say hi to me and then left us alone, his dad I only met as I was leaving and I think that maybe he had a bad day or something, he really didn't seem to be in a good mood." "Or maybe he's the reason that Quinn is such a jerk. You know, the apple not falling far from the tree and all that." Kenneth replies with an alternate way of looking at things. "Maybe, but honestly, Quinn at home is completely different from Quinn at school." "I don't know man, once a bully always a bully. I bet he goes back to his old ways once you get him to pass math. Then he won't have any use for you and he'll go back to treating you like shit." The two boys talk for a while more, stopping only when they are told that they need to get off the phone. "Well, my mom says I need to get off the phone now. She wants to spend a little time as a family before I need to go to bed. Hey, I just wanted to say that I missed having you on the bus coming home today, just not the same without you there. Well, see you in the morning." Kenneth says to his friend as he hangs up the phone. As he gets ready for bed he wonders why he said that last bit at the end, about missing Senan. "I mean it's true, the bus ride is a lot more boring without him on it, and there's no chance of us getting together after school as long as he's tutoring Quinn. But missing him? That sounds like, I don't know it just sounds weird is all." Kenneth is thinking aloud as he is getting ready for bed. By that time he has brushed his teeth and says good night to his parents before stripping down to his underwear and then climbs into his bed. Meanwhile, approximately a mile away, Senan is having similar thoughts. "What did he mean by that? It's not a big deal right? Sometimes we have different things we need to be doing is all. He knows I'd be there with him if I could, that I miss him just as much." This train of thought brings to mind the unremembered dream he'd had the previous night and the feeling that his friend Kenneth was part of it somehow. Partly hoping to have the dream again and partly dreading having the dream again, Senan slips under his covers delighting in the feel of the soft cotton sheets against his bare skin. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Just a reminder that if you want you can contact me at jinoff930@gmail.com
