We have to be checked in by ten o'clock!" Mum yelled into my bedroom. I was just waking up from a restless slumber. I decided to get up before Mum dragged me out of bed. I grabbed some clothes that would be good for flying in. I grabbed a pair of blue track pants, plain white tee and a jersey. I walked slowly to the bathroom. I opened the door and walked in. I looked in the mirror and see a shy, self-conscious boy that has shortish brown hair, bright blue eyes and a well-defined chest. That boy is sadly me. I striped and got into the shower. While the warm water cascaded down my slender body I remembered the events that have caused this day to happen. Mum and Dad went through a messy divorce that was caused by me. I came out to my Mother a few months back, we told Dad a few days after I told her. Dad went bat shit crazy, flipping the coffee table in front of me and grabbing my throat. I remember thinking "This is the end" and then Mum hauled my so called Dad off my body. Mum being a black belt in karate in her younger days had no trouble doing so. She hauled Dad to his feet and threw him out the door. Mum filed for a divorce and it was accepted. Next was the custody hearing. Dad tried to get me so I could be `cured' but Mum convinced the judge not to let him have custody. Mum then brought a house in Broad Beach in Australia close to where her parents live so we could have a fresh start. Mum was knocking loudly on the bathroom door telling me that it was quarter past nine. I got out of the shower and towelled off. I got into my clothes for today and walked out to the lounge where Mum was packing the rest of our possessions. She told me to look in my room one last time to see if I had missed anything. So I headed to my room, the only things that were in there were my now stripped bare bed, empty bookshelf and clear desk. I would be getting more furniture in Australia. I looked through my desk drawers. There was a picture frame with a picture of me and Dad on a fishing trip. My eyes started to tear up. I picked it up and threw it at the wall. It shattered, I walked up to it and took out the photo, I ripped it in half so Dad was out of the picture. I smiled and wiped my tears and thought "That bastard." I took the half with me on it with me and left `Dad' on the floor, by himself. We loaded our suitcases into a taxi van and we set off towards the Invercargill Airport. Once we got there, there were hardly any people in the terminal. I could see a ATR 72 that I expected we would be going on. We checked in and got our itinerary for the day. We would fly to Christchurch in an ATR 72 then fly from Christchurch to Auckland in an Airbus A320 then to The Gold Coast in an Boeing 737. This process would take eight hours. Mum and I went to the small café and Mum got two packs of Airwave chewing gum so when we were ascending we could chew it so our ears pop. We went up the stairs and sat in one of the 70's style waiting lounge. We engaged in a light conversation about what would happen over the next day. "Flight NZ469 bound for Christchurch is now boarding at gate 2 on the second floor air bridge. Please proceed to this gate if this concerns you. Have your tickets ready for the flight attendant." I look at Mum and she looked back and nodded. We got up and Mum put her arm around my shoulder and we walked to our gate. We went through the procedure of giving our tickets and boarding and we found our seats. The plane was rather small so it didn't take long to fill up. As the cabin crew closed the door Mum said "Take one last look at this hell hole. I hope we never have to come back." I just smile and look out the window as we taxi down the runway. We turn when we reach the end of the runway and we speed up and take off. I put a piece of gum in my mouth and started chewing vigorously. For the rest of the flight I looked out the window and watched the farms and small towns that littered the ground tens of thousands of feet under us. As we approached the Christchurch area we started our decent, again I repeated the gum process. We land and we exit the craft greeted by a rather warm wind. We get inside the terminal and rush off to the domestic departure lounge as our next flight was in an hours' time. We checked in and took a seat on the funny shaped chairs. I looked around the lounge surveying the people on our next flight. My eyes came to a rest on a boy who looked about my age, had long brown hair that went over his ears, dark piercing blue eyes and thin red lips. He turned his head away from his family who were laughing. He had a small smile still on his face as he turned towards me. He must have noticed me staring and smiled at me. I blushed profusely and looked away quickly. Mum noticed me staring and leaned in to me and whispered. "He's cute!" I gave her the evil eye and went back to looking around. I decided I needed to get a drink so I got up and took some of Mum's money to buy one. I started walking towards the drink machine and looked for a bottle of Lift Plus. I found it, punched in the code and inserted the required amount of money. A conveyer belt went up and the drink was pushed onto the conveyer, it was then taken down and taken to the opening. I grabbed it and started walking back and noticed the cute boy from the departure lounge walking towards the same machine. He gave me a smile as we passed each other. I smiled back and surprisingly didn't blush. I walked smiling because I couldn't believe I had my second crush just after my first. That then made my smile dim. I got back to Mum as our flight was being called over the speakers. We walked to our gate which was surprisingly close and gave our tickets to the flight attendant. We found our seats and settled in for our short flight to Auckland. As promised I gave Mum the window seat. "Look Alexis! That boy is coming on our plane!" I rolled my eyes. Then I saw the boy and his family from the lounge walking down the marked path. They boarded the A320 and walked down the aisle until they slowed close to our row of seats. As the boy's family had four people and the seat rows had three people the father sat beside me. I sat there awkwardly waiting for the plane to taxi. Once we started moving the man started talking to me. "Where are you headed?" He said in a thick Australian accent. "Um, we are moving to Broad Beach." I said quietly, blushing as I do when I talk to people I don't know. "Oh, yea we live there. My names Mark Lucas. It's a nice place what school are you going to?" He said. "Alexis Hart. And I am going to Merrimac State School." I said quietly shaking his hand. "My son, Sam goes there." As he pointed at the brown haired boy who appeared to be staring out the window. I nodded. We did a turn and we took off. Once we reached cruising altitude we undid our seatbelts. Sam got out of his seat and clambered over his sister and mother, he then walked to the back of the plane to go to the toilets. Mark then got up and moved to Sam's seat. Mark then gave me a quick smile and pulled out the `Kia Ora' complementary magazine out of the pouch in front of him. Mum was sitting there also reading the magazine. I reached into my bag and pulled out the book I was reading and started my chapter. The book was `Carrie' by Stephen King, I just started reading the first page when Sam sat down beside me. "Hey." Sam said smiling but also blushing. "Hi." I said quietly. "What `cha reading?" He asked "Carrie by Stephen King." I replied quietly. "Cool! I have read that too! Do you like Stephen King?" He said excitedly. "Um, yea he is a good writer. I have a lot of his books." I said. We started talking about books for a while. "Sooo, where you headed?" Sam asked. "We are moving to Broad Beach because of recent events." I say. "Cool! That's where I live! What school are you going too?" "Merrimac State School." "That's where I go! You'll love it there!" He continued the conversations for the rest of the flight. "Soo. When's your next flight?" I asked. "Hold on I'll just check my ticket." He said looking through his backpack. "Three o'clock whens yours?" "Same!" I said, I wonder if we are on the same flight. "Let me see your ticket." He said. He compared our tickets and we found we had the same flights! I was so excited. The plane descended, landed and we went into the Auckland Airport domestic terminal. We introduced the parents to each other and we walked off to the customs area. We handed our passports over and they did all the necessary checks and we got waved through. The rest went smoothly and we found ourselves waiting for our next flight that would be two hours away. Sam and I sat down on a couch and pulled out his iPad. "What kind of movies do you like?" He asked as he connected it up to the airport wifi. "Um, mostly horrors and some fantasies." I replied. "Have you seen Insidious?" He asked. "No, what's it like?" "Awesome! Do you want to watch it now?" He asked. "Sure!" I smiled at him. He gave me one of his ear buds and we watched the movie. It was pretty good, but being close enough to Sam was distracting enough. Once it was finished we went to find the parents. We couldn't find them so I got my phone out and called Mum. "Hey! Hows it going?" Mum asked with chatter in the background. "Um great. Where are you guys?" "We are just in duty free! Come on over." She said. "Okay see you soon!" I said. I hung up and faced Sam. "They are in duty free. C'mon! Let's go!" I say grabbing his arm then letting go blushing with embarrassment. He just smiles at me and we walk off to find everyone. We found the parents wandering through the alcohol section. "Come on! Our flight is being called!" Sam said. They all looked at the time and we hurried off to the gate, which was down the other end of the airport. Once we reached the plane we boarded and took our seats. Since we were in the same area the parents sat together and Sam and I sat with another person who fell asleep during the flight. We watched `Paranormal Activity 2' and by the end of the movie we were close to Australia. The plane started to descend and we were hit by a large amount of turbulence. We both grabbed the armrest of the same chair, Sam grabbed my hand oblivious to doing so. Once we had settled he looked at our armrest and removed his hand blushing. I gave him a small smile to reassure him. We landed and the cabin crew opened the doors, there was a wave of warm air flowing down the plane. I needed to take my jersey off so I did and I felt instantly better. We walked down the terminal to the baggage claim area. We exchanged numbers and said our goodbyes. Nan and Pop were waiting by the door. Nan rushed over and pulled me into a massive hug and I also got loads of sloppy grandma kisses. I just shook Pop's hand then smiled and hugged him. I saw Sam walk off into the distance. Just thinking of Sam made my heart flutter with love for him. He probably won't feel the same way but I might not be able to contain my love for him for much longer... **************************************************************** Thanks for reading my chapter! You are a clap of thunder in the midst of a summer storm, exciting and full of life, but you are also the next day, when the sun is shining and there isn't a single cloud in the sky. You are restlessness, impatience, and the feeling that there is too much else that's keeping both of us away, but you are also contentment, and knowing that even if I don't get all of you right now, there isn't any rush, and the hope that even though forever is past the horizon, it's still there waiting for us ...someday. You are my favorite book, the one I know by heart and can recite all your greatest quotes, but you are also a book I've never read before, that I can't wait to learn more about with each new chapter. You are a lot of things that are completely new to me and I'm both curious and a little apprehensive, but you are also a lot of things that make me feel like I've known you my whole life and want to know you forever.
