Corey hopped off after me and I turned the engine off. "Man, that was pretty tight back there," Corey said to me, grinning. I flashed a quick smile back at him and walked him to the door. "Go inside, I'll be there in a minute," I told him, closing the door behind him. I walked to the sidewalk and saw Alex approaching me. "Who was that?" he asked me, rubbing his hands together for heat. He was wearing a blue fleece-sweater pull-over, a red abercrombie & fitch t-shirt underneath, badge pants and black nike's. Nice. "That's Corey, the guy who stayed over last night. He's cool, you'll like him," I said to him, hoping that they'd get along. I walked to the door with Alex by my side and we entered the warm house, feeling relieved from the cold. Corey was on the couch in the living room, his black leather jacket resting beside him. He must've changed his shirt earlier, because now he was wearing a red shirt with thin blue stripes up and down it. His blue jean pants were halfway covering his white nike's. He was sitting back, relaxed. He looked pretty cute like that. Alex walked into the room and I followed behind him. Corey looked over at us. "Corey, this is my friend Alex. Alex, Corey." Corey stood up and extended his hand. Alex shook it. "Wassup man," Corey said to Alex. "Nothin much," Alex said back. Alex sat on the other end of the couch, and I sat on the seperate couch chair. "You guys want somethin to drink?" I offered. They nodded their heads and I went to the kitchen and grabbed 3 cokes. I handed them out and they uttered their 'thanks' right before attacking the beverages. I looked at the clock hanging over the fireplace mantle. 10:36am. Almost time for my mom and dad to come downstairs. Its Saturday, so they are usually ready to go to the office by 11am. "Whoa, a house full this morning, huh?" my dad came downstairs and said. He was dressed up. Not in a tux or anything, just a navy blue, button down dress shirt, black dress pants and a tie. He had the paper in one hand and his briefcase in the other. "Hey dad," I said to him with a smirk. "Mr. Warren, wassup?" Alex said to him. Dad threw up his hand and stuck up 2 fingers, making the peace sign. It was so embarassing when he tried to be cool. Alex laughed. "And who is this fellow right here?" dad said, standing behind the couch looking down on Corey. Corey turned and looked up at him. "Dad, this is Corey." "Nice to meet you, sir," Corey said to him, extending his hand. My dad took it and said "Nice to meet you too, son." "Me and your mom are gonna try and make it home a little early, Max, so we can take you to the mall. Don't forget that school starts back Monday. Unless you don't feel like going.." my dad told me after he and Corey were done. "No, I'll go. Can Corey and Alex ride?" "Sure, why not?" dad said to me while going into the kitchen. He put a pop-tart into the toaster and stood there, waiting for it to finish. He looked out of the glass doors and saw the grill. He and Max haven't grilled out in a while, so he thought that he would surprise his son by bringing home burgers and hot dogs to grill. He stepped outside onto the patio and opened the grill lid. There was a small bag of charcoal on the shelf underneath the grill. That's one thing he didn't have to pick up on his way home. He saw the full bottle of lighter fluid on the ground a few feet away, so he picked it up and dropped it inside the grill. He didn't know that the force of the drop had popped the cap halfway off the bottle, so it was leaking now, little by little. He closed the lid and went back inside. He grabbed his pop-tart and left. Mom came down the stairs in a navy blue business dress, with a blue sweater over her upper body. She looked like Mrs. Cleaver, her brown hair all curly, dangling freely on her head, and in her little dress. "Hey boys, gotta run!" she said to us before being joined by my dad, who was eating his blueberry pop-tart. "Remember guys, stick around, I'll be home around 5. Oh and Max, how bout we gril some burgers and hot dogs later?" he said to me with a smile on his face. I grinned from ear to ear. "Yea dad, that'll be cool!" I told him. "Thought so. I'll be back later guys." They then left out the front door. Not too long after, the car was heard leaving the driveway. I noticed that Corey looked a little uncomfortable. "I guess I'll run home and get some money, I'll be back later, like a few hours. See ya guys." Alex said. I walked him to the door and we kissed softly on the lips. That small kiss turned into a twisted tongue fight, just inches away from the room Corey was in. I broke the kiss quietly, and playfully shoved him out the door. He waved at me and I smiled back. I shut the door and joined Corey. "What's wrong, man?" I said to him, slumping beside him. "Man, I can't go with you guys," he told he, looking down at his feet. "Why not?" "Cuz, I don't have any money, I can't go to school, and I'd feel like a tag-along, man.." he said in almost a whisper, still looking down. I didn't know what to say. I didn't mean to put him in this situation, either. "Why can't you go to school?" I asked out of curiousity. "I got expelled. Too many fights with kids who thought they could make fun of me and get away with it. Its just stupid, man," he was shaking his head. "Well man, sorry I brought it up. You can still go with us, just to hang out, if you want to. Me, you and Alex can just hang out then. We don't need anything. Whatever makes you feel comfortable." He raised his head and looked me in the eye. "Thanks, kung-fu master!" he said to me, smiling. "No prob, Bob," I said to him, smiling as well. "Who the hell is Bob?" we both laughed after he said that. We turned our attention back to the TV after we calmed down and Monica's 'So Gone' video was coming on. "So gone... ova you.. you you you...." I sang along with her, waving my hands slowly in the air, my eyes closed. Corey laughed at me. "Don't ever do that in public, dude," he suggested to me. We laughed. "And you can do better?" I challenged him. "WAY better, man!" he laughed. "Let's hear it!" "Iight, watch me blow you outta the water." he said to me. He waited until she started to rap and he chimed in. "Ima rowdy chick.. sometimes I have to fight cuz my mouth too slick.. baby why you doin me like I ain't worth 'shhhh'.. make me wanna ride by ya house and sit.. kick down ya doors and smack ya chick.. just to show ya Monica not havin it.. so in love wit you like a drug habit get.. you treat me so unreal..." he was waving his hands in the air as he sung along with her, and after the rap was over, he stood up and took a bow. I doubled over in laughter. HE gave me a confused look. "What? Didn't you like it?" He said to me. I just kept laughing, and he joined in. He sat back down and we laughed a lil more. The song went off and the commercials came. "That was pretty good, I'll give you your props." I said to him. "Yea, give it up, give it up," he laughed. I smiled. This kid was so cool. I still couldn't believe he came from such a neglectful family. We sat in silence a few moments before I started again. "So, Corey.. if you want.. I could tell my parents about your situation, and we could figure something out," I offered, but that same look of fear and anger came back to his face that first appeared when I brought up this subject last night. "No man, I'd just end up in a foster home and property of the state. I ain't havin it!" "How bout if you just stay here, then? I could make something up and then you could stay here." "I don't know, man.." "Come on, dude! You don't have to keep worrying about where you're gonna sleep every night. You can crash here. I don't mind." "Why are you so hung up on me, anyways?" "Cause I--" I stopped myself in mid-sentence. No telling what I would've said in the heat of the moment. "Cause I wouldn't want anything to happen to you man," I told him. He was quiet and had a look on his face, like he was thinking. Finally he spoke. "Well if you insist, I guess I'll stay here. But you gotta think of the reason, cause it was all you in the first place." "Iight, as long as you stay." I said to him. I was feeling all warm inside as I turned my attention back to the TV. We watched a few more videos in silence when the phone rang. "Hello?" I answered. "Hey man, it's Tonio." "Wassup?" I greeted him. "Nothin much," he said. He sounded a lil frustrated. "What's up wit you?" I asked my friend, getting up and taking the cordless phone into the kitchen. "It's Bobby, man. He's avoiding me. I call him, and either he isn't home or he has to go after a few minutes. I go to his house, and he's either not home or can't have visitors or whatever. It's stupid! He's pissing me off!" I could tell he was upset. "Iight, calm down man. I'm sure whatever it is, you can straighten it out with him if ya'll just talk about it." "Talk about it? I'm lucky if I even HEAR from him at ALL this weekend!" "Ok dude. I'm sure it's not a big deal. Whatever it is, he must be going through something. He might not wanna talk about it. Whenever you catch him, ask him what's going on. I really can't suggest anything else." I told him. He was calling me like I was a 'Dear Abby' column or somethin! "You're right, dude. He might be goin through somethin. I'll figure it out. Later!" "See ya." I said before turning off the phone. I rejoined Corey, who was paying close attention to a psychic commercial. 'Come see Miss Tarianna for YOUR special reading! Now through Monday at the Hillcrest Mall.' The narrator's voice echoed on the screen. They showed a blonde woman with beaded necklaces on her forehead, at least 20 of them around her neck, and a putple glittery gown on with lots of confetti. She looked fake as hell. The price was on the bottom of the screen. $5. What a joke. "Maybe when we go to the mall, I'll get her to read me." Corey said to me. "What do you expect her to say?" "I dunno. Maybe that my life will turn around and I'll be rich or something." he smiled at the thought. So did I. "Well, she looks fake." "Sure, rain on my parade. You asshole." he laughed to show me that he was kidding, and I smiled at him. "Well man, we have a few hours to kill. What do you wanna do?" I asked him. He suggested that we play the PS2. I pulled it out of the cabinet of the entertainment system and put it on the coffee table. I gave him a controller and we popped in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance. I explained to him how to play and showed him what the basic buttons were. He was a fast learner, because after a few rounds of trial and error, he eventually came around and kicked my ass. He really hated it when I played with Sonya and used her fatality on him, which is the Kiss of Death. I taught him how to do a few fatalities and before long, he was using all of them on me! The final score was 12-16. I lost. "That was fun, LOSER!!" he taunted me, smiling proudly. I looked up at the clock. 11:56am. Almost time for Jerry Springer! "Man, wanna watch Jerry?" "Hell yess!" he answered, still smiling from his lucky game. I put the game back and we turned it to the channel. 'Jerry, Jerry, Jerry, Jerry.....' the audience chanted. It was a 'Classic Springer', where Jerry sits in the empty audience and narrates an old episode. It was the one where the guy was cheating on the girl with a gay guy, and the gay guy was sleeping with the girl's best friend, and the girl's best friend says that she is pregnant by the gay guy and a lot of other craziness happens. We watch it, laughing and eating chips until 1pm. We turn back on the game and play 'Twisted Medal: Black' for a while on Co-op Mode until 2pm, when we have to stop the game and I record 'Passions' for my mom. We go to the computer then and surf the web, playin games and crap. I'm just lucky he didn't check my bookmarks, because I have alot of naughty stuff on there! At about 3pm, we go and get some more snacks and then watch more videos. After a while, we just flip through the channels looking for something to watch. We pass the news channel, which says that it should start warming up by this afternoon. PRAISE GOD! We flip some more until we find a movie to watch. We watch 'Dr. Dolittle' part 1 until about 4:45pm. Me and Corey had a blast hanging out together. After a while, it seemed like we knew each other our whole lives. Almost time for the mall. I hear someone at the door, and Alex walks in. "Sorry guys, but I had a lot to do at home, my mom's trippin." Alex said as he walked in. "Don't worry bout it, man. Ya'll wanna stay over afterward so we can grill out together?" "Sure thing, man," Corey said, grinning. Me and Alex grinned a little too. Not too long afterwards, I heard a horn honk outside. Dad's home. "Iight, come on guys," I announced as we marched to the car. We were riding in his burgundy toyota camry. I got in the back with Alex and Corey, mainly because Dad's briefcase and papers were in the front seat. We talked about nothing in particular on the ride to the mall. After about a 30 minute drive, we parked in the front of the mall. We got out and the mall looked even bigger than before for some reason. We walked towards it, me, Alex and Corey, while dad stayed back at the car. He was taking his blue dress shirt off, so he was left with only the black t-shirt underneath. We finally made it inside. The mall was pretty big. 4 stories high, nicely decorated, etc. We walked on the marble floor, looking for nothing in particular, when I saw a poster for that psychic we saw on TV. "Corey, that poster says that the psychic is on the 2nd floor. Wanna check it out?" I asked him. "Why not?" was all he said. We all walked towards the nearest escalador and rode it up. We got off and wondered around until we saw a tent in the middle of the floor, with red velvet ropes blocking it. There was an opening in the ropes, leading to the entrance of the tent. There was a sign there that said "Beware" and had a freaky looking face under it. "Ooohh, spooky..." Alex said in a wavy voice and we smiled at him. We walked through the path, Corey in front, me in the middle and Alex behind. We got inside and it smelled freaky. At least 5 different inscents were lit inside there. There were dimmed lights on and alot of black-lights on. There was a round table in the middle of the tent, and an exit door straight across from the entrance door, on the other side of the tent. There was a small radio playing Aladdin-like music, and plastic plants sitting around. We were too busy studying the place that we forgot what we were doing there in the first place. "WELCOME!!" a woman's voice roared at us, breaking us from our thoughts. We all nearly jumped out of our skin. We looked over at the table and Miss Tarianna was sitting there. She looked to be about 45 or somewhere along there. She had small wrinkles in her face and a red bandana hanging around her head. There was a crystal ball in the center of the table, and her hands, covered in plastic jewelry, were resting beside it. "I'm Miss Tarianna. Which one of you would like to sit first?" she asked in a creepy voice. Gosh, these people take their jobs way too seriously. "I guess I am," Alex said to her. He put $5 in her basket and sat down. I handed Corey a 5 dollar bill while nobody was paying attention, and he mouthed 'thanks' to me. Miss Tarianna closed her eyes and rested her hands on top of Alex's. Alex turned around and looked at us as Miss Tarianna was humming and chanting. Alex giggled to us. "FOCUS!!" she roared with stern eyes, which made us all jump again. Alex turned quickly and closed his eyes. She closed her eyes and started chanting. She moved her hands over the ball and started waving them around it. Then she opened her eyes. "You are floating on air right now. You have survived a terrible disaster that threatened to take your life, and everything is back to normal, if not better. You feel like a MILLION DOLLA!" We all laughed when she said 'dolla' in her foreign accent. What she said made sense, though. Alex did survive an accident, and maybe he did feel really good because of it. Alex said 'thank you' and got up. Corey sat down and mocked Alex by putting the money in the basket. Miss Tarianna did the same movements with Corey as she did with Alex. Then her eyes flashed open the same way after a few moments and quite a few chants. "You were feeling alone not so long ago, but now you have found someone to help you in your time of need. You are too stubborn sometimes to take what you need from those who offer, but now is not the time to be self-centered. You have someone who wants to help you. Go with the flow, you get what you give." We were silent after this. Was I the one that she meant by the person that wants to help? There was a good chance I was. Corey got up and turned to us, wide-eyed. Maybe she struck a chord with him. I was almost too freaked to have my reading, but what the hell. I sat down and put my hands on the table. She did the same movements as before, the same chants and everything, but it seemed to take her longer with me. Finally she opened her eyes. "You feel proud of yourself at the moment, but your happiness will be short lived, as I see fire in your future. I see flames, child... use extreme caution. I see fire.. flames... hot.. fire.." she kept repeating over and over again. I got up and put the money in her basket and left the tent. I was followed by Alex and Corey. "What a crack-pot," Alex said to me. I could tell he was trying to make me feel better, but it wasn't working. Everything that she said about Alex and Corey made sense, maybe mine did, too. I just didn't know it. "Man she's a fake anyway, I should get my momey back." Corey chimed in. He was attempting to make me feel better too, but no-can-do. "Let's juss go to the arcade or somethin," Alex suggested. We made it to the 4th floor and found the arcade. I secretly put $10 on 2 game cards and gave one to Corey. We went around and played Skateboard Rally against each other, where you stand on the skateboard and drive your guy on screen. Alex kicked our asses big time. We went to the dance machine and they weren't ready for me! I got on my side of the machine and Alex got on the other. We watched the screen and the music came on, and we had to dance by stepping on the correct pad at the correct time. It got faster and faster, and the one who messed up first lost. Alex lasted till the 3rd level, then lost. Corey came against me and he was pretty good! We went all the way to the 6th level, which is extremely hard. A small crowd was gathered around the machine by now, cheering us on. 'One, Two, Three, GO!' The machine roared before the music started and the people on screen copied me and Corey's actions. It started out with the C-Walk, then sped up the walk, and got more complicated, until Corey slipped and landed on the wrong pad. The machine roared "Warning!" but Corey just kept messing up, until finally they declared me the winner. I threw my hands up in the air and people cheered for me. It felt good being a star! Me and Corey shook hands, grabbed our coats and left. We went to the food court and sat down, talking about what just happened. We ordered some fries and cokes and ate. I was looking around when I noticed someone farmiliar. It was Bobby. And he was with this other guy. "Hey guys, I'll be back," I told them as I walked closer to the table where Bobby was. I noticed that they were getting along a little too good to be just 'friends'. I sat at an empty table beside them and eavesdropped. "...Chris you are so hott when you talk like that!" I heard Bobby laugh. And who the hell was Chris? Whoever it was, it sure as hell wasn't Tonio! "Man, let's ditch this place and go somewhere more.. private," Chris told Bobby as they hopped up and walked towards the escalador. If my mouth dropped anymore, it would've hit the first floor. I got up and joined my friends. "What was that all about, James Bond, supa-spy?" Corey joked. Alex smirked. "Ahh... nothing important," I lied. It was really important to Tonio. He really cares about that kid. I looked at my watch and it was almost 6:30. Time to head back down to the parking lot. We threw our left-overs away and raced to the car. 3 floors and a half mile later, we were there, tired and almost sweaty. Dad pulled up, we got in, and we laughed all the way home. Once we got home, Dad opened the trunk and got the freshly bought meat and buns and we headed to the kitchen. "I'm gonna start the burgers, dad!" I screamed up the back staircase, where dad went to wash up. "Go ahead, I'll be down in a minute." he screamed back. Mom was still at the office. Alex and Corey had took the stuff outside to the grill. I grabbed the matches. I got outside and organized the meats and buns on the counter beside the grill. I opened the lid and saw the ligher fluid lying there. I picked it up and noticed it was empty. 'Good thing we have Match Light,' I thought to myself. I tossed the bottle to the side, poured the charcoal into the grill, took a stick and mixed it around a few times. Alex was standing in the glass doors watching me and Corey was in the kitchen washing his hands. I struck a match and was about to light the grill, but the wind blows it out. "Dammit!" I screech and Alex laughs. I grin and strike another match. I toss it into the grill... ...and it Explodes. ------- static382@mindless.com THE SITE IS UPDATED! for sneak peeks and more, go to http://www.maxstories.swsites.net
