FRIDAY, MAY 1

After the ambulances left, the FBI and police investigation was slow and thorough. Since officers drew and fired their weapons, the investigators wanted to make sure every "t" was crossed and every "i" was dotted. There could be no unanswered questions.

As such, things weren't adding up. The call that sparked the manhunt for Mark Lange pegged him as a rapist and kidnapper. But when the policed questioned the victim, he denied Mark had anything to do with any of it. Trajan reported that he was raped by the Boss, and he was glad that the man and his associates were all dead. Lewis and Mark confirmed Trajan's story and with each round of interrogation, their stories remained unchanged.

They questioned the boys one more time at the hospital where each was checked out before being released to his parents. Once again, the stories didn't waiver. The FBI and local law enforcement agreed, taking down the drug lord was more important than continuing to investigate a sex offense where the accused offender and victim deny it ever happened. With pressure from their superiors, local officials and the media, they decided to put the case to rest without questioning witnesses back in East Harbor.

It was after midnight before the Rear Admiral, the De Lucas, and Coach Lange were reunited with their sons. The three families stood in the hospital corridor relieved to be with their son but confused by the day's events and Mark's freedom. Officers stood by in case the boys' families confronted Mark about the accusations they learned from the news reports and police. Thankfully, the families kept to themselves. It was late and they simply headed home.

----------------------

Dr. William Kendall was up early. Having moved one time zone west, his normal 6:00 wakeup had him up and about at five am. He didn't complain. Instead of making his way down to San Diego, he decided to spend the first evening in California relaxing and studying up on the UC San Diego Health system and prepare for his upcoming interviews. Arriving shortly after leaving the boys to their visit at Cate School, he made the short trip down Ventura Freeway to the Cliff House Inn. The atmosphere checked all the boxes for what he was looking for. Sitting on a small strip of the old Pacific Coast Highway, the Inn was an old three-story motel dating back to the 1950s with only a narrow swimming pool separating the Inn from the rocky coastline.

The Shoals Restaurant wouldn't be open for a couple hours, but Will made himself some coffee and opened his window to listen to the waves methodically crashing on the rocks. He connected to the WiFi and began reviewing the healthcare system's diverse facilities and distribution of locations against the population centers in the region. He made a list of the Healthcare system's opportunities to improve service to the community.

Pouring his second cup of coffee, his phone rang. He was surprised it was Ollie and not his son.

"Hey Ollie! How's the Cate School?"

"Hi, Dr. Kendall. It's okay, but you need to come pick us up today."

That alarmed Will. "What's going on? Is Craig alright?"

"Yeah. He finally got to sleep a little while ago. They said we'll need to be around here this morning, but we should be able to leave this afternoon."

Will knew Oliver was being evasive. He was becoming as familiar with Oliver as he was with his own son. "Why do you need to stick around? What happened?"

"Don't worry. We're not in trouble or anything. We're fine. It will just be easier to explain it all to you when you're here."

"I'm packing up now. I'll be there as soon as I can."

----------------------

Drama was becoming commonplace at East Harbor Middle School and frankly, it was wearing out the faculty and administration. The only thing being shared with anyone was Trajan and Lewis were fine but wouldn't be coming to school this day.

The district understood that the boys got home early in the morning--too late to come to school--but it also left a lot to the imaginations of a few hundred middle schoolers. The rumors ran rampant. The most accepted story by the tween and teen minds was that Trajan, Lewis and Mark were heroes. In this version, they had acquired guns and went to the home of a drug dealer to take revenge and opened fire killing all of the bad guys.

Before school, the adults agreed to not even bother trying to correct or redirect these theories. They simply worked to keep the students on task and survive one more crazy Friday. Lunch brought relief but didn't alleviate the mounting tension.

"You guys," interrupted Sam, "let's don't jump to any conclusions. Just be glad that whatever happened, Trajan and Lewis are okay."

"Yeah," agreed Alex, "that's all that matters." Gregory nodded his agreement with the other two.

"Whatever," dismissed Will. "Those two are just mad because they were wrong." He pointed his thumb towards Michael and Lukas. The two Meijer boys fumed in their seat.

"If that's the case, how did they get the guns?" quizzed Lukas. Inside he wanted to wipe the smug look off Will and Curtis' faces.

"Duh!" said Will emphatically. "Lewis' dad is in the military!"

Michael sighed and shook his head. He'd spent the night at Lewis' and knew the Rear Admiral didn't have an arsenal in the house. He also knew neither of the conspirators would believe him.

"You know," added Curtis, "other people can be heroes too. Not just you and your dad." The comment cut both Lukas and Michael deeply. "I'm done. Let's get out of here." Curtis stood and bussed his trash and Will followed.

"Why are they being such assholes?" asked Gregory. He and his teammates couldn't wrap their heads around the week's drama. Their older friends had been so solid but now they were at each other's throats.

Jordan tried to sooth things over. "Don't worry about it. Everyone is going to believe their own opinions until we learn the truth. Until then, we'll have to suffer with their self-righteous attitudes."

"But what if they are right?" asked Lukas. "I mean, they were supposed to be getting revenge on Mark and the stories in the news are painting a picture of Mark, Trajan and Lewis working together. That doesn't make sense."

"Maybe we had it wrong?" questioned Michael.

"But remember, I heard it too," added Scott. "Lukas and I both heard what happened by the bus between Mark and Trajan. I thought Mark would be in jail by now."

Christian took it all in. He'd been quiet about the whole ordeal all week. He understood Lewis better than any of them but couldn't get on board with his lifelong friend. More than anyone, he didn't believe the stories about what Trajan and Lewis were rumored to have done. It didn't sound like Lewis at all--even "evil" Lewis as Lewis and Christian referred to Lewis during the red-head's "dark period". The night was hell worrying about Lewis. When sleep came, it was in fits. In the morning, when his parents let him know Lewis was home safe, Christian sent his first of several texts but Lewis had yet to respond. Despite wanting to defend Lewis, Christian didn't have any more facts than the other boys.

"You coming?" asked Michael.

The question snapped Christian from his thoughts. "Uh...yeah." He picked up his trash and followed Michael to throw his garbage away.

----------------------

Will adjusted the rearview mirror so he could check on the boys in the backseat. Two bucket seats with negligible leg room seemed impossibly awkward. Yet, after swapping their gear for clothing, their backpacks transformed into reasonably soft cushions. This added luxury afforded the lanky teens enough comfort to cuddle and sleep.

He stopped at the intersection and checked the digital map before abiding by the voice of the GPS telling him to "turn right". As downtown turned into a tree-lined residential neighborhood, he thought back to the conversations he'd had with the police and school administration back in Carpinteria. He really respected how grow-up the boys were in giving their statements and paying their respect to the track coach and new friends. Even though they could have left shortly after lunch, the boys asked to wait until they had the opportunity to thank the track coach and say their farewells to the track team.

The Cliff House Inn was to be his headquarters while the boys were at Cate School. Since they chose to leave early, he thought it better to take them somewhere they wouldn't be bored. It had been a four-hour drive, the boys were obviously in need of a bed, but Will wasn't ready to head to the hotel. Besides, for dinner he wanted something quieter than fast food or the restaurants in Carlsbad. Instead, he had looked up a recommended eatery and headed that way. He found parking along the street and turned off the car.

The boys looked so peaceful, but the 14-year-old eating machines would soon be awake and ravenous. Rubbing the leg closest to him, he called gently, "Boys, let's get something to eat." Moans and groans were their replies. It was clear they could use more sleep. It was equally clear their bodies were retaliating from the abuse of sleeping in the cramped backseat of a car better off as a two-seater.

He dragged the boys into the restaurant, and they were seated on the patio. It didn't matter that Craig and Oliver were barely awake. Will was hungry and he knew the teens would be soon. The shadows of the setting sun were offset by the colored lights cast by the local businesses. Away from the highway, the only things assaulting their ears were the sounds from inside the café, the birds, and the water fountain. Will found it great relief from the wind and traffic he'd been listening to for the last few hours.

"You boys look like you could use a milkshake," asked the waitress. The boys perked up and gave her their attention. "I'm Vera. I'll be helping you this evening." She set waters on their table and prepared to take their orders. "Now the other boys around here say our milkshakes are the best. Our flavors are right here." She pointed them out on the back of the menu.

"Dad? Can we?" asked Craig.

"Sure. Order what you want." He was happy to see the boys getting back to themselves after the incident the night before.

Craig and Oliver ordered burgers, fries and milkshakes--strawberry and caramel chocolate chip, respectively. Will treated himself to a steak.

After Vera left to place the order with the kitchen, Oliver nudged Craig and pointed. "Dude, those guys are hot." Craig looked to where Oliver pointed. Crossing the grassy area were five boys, laughing and joking around. When the youngest of the group looked their way, he smiled and walked right into the back of the blonde-haired boy with glasses. The smaller, brown-haired boy pointed towards the Café and the blond looked over and smiled. He said something teasing the other boy before running off with the younger boy giving chase. All five headed to the theater across the way. While the oldest unlocked the door, the two smaller boys grabbed the blond with long hair and a taller boy with black hair and pointed out the two boys at the Café. Craig gave a little wave and the boys at the theater waved back. Then, to Craig's utter shock, the two smaller boys did something unbelievable. The blond drew the other boy's attention then engaged him in a kiss. The younger boy seemed to forget about the teens across the way and turned his body so he could embrace the bespeckled blond. Their kiss became passionate before the older boys broke them up and dragged them into the theater, laughing and joking.

"Did you see that?" asked Craig.

"Yeah," said Oliver who was filled with joy at the sight. Dr. Kendall just smiled.

"I can't believe it. They were kissing in public!" Craig did have a habit of stating the obvious, especially when it was a shock to him.

Oliver, for once, was two steps ahead of Craig. "Did you read that sign thingy...?" He pointed towards the theater.

Will helped. "The marquee."

Oliver corrected his statement. "Yeah, the marquee over the theater doors."

Craig turned and read "At the Majestic". Then he leaned over the patio's railing to read the sign on the large building across the street. "East Harbor Middle School." Craig looked at Oliver. "We're in East Harbor! Wait! That means that was Michael and Christian."

At the same time, Will offered, "Simon and Lukas?" He was surprised that Craig knew the boys' names. "How do you know those boys?"

"That was the members of 'At the Majestic'. They're like one of our favorite bands," explained Oliver. "Matthew, Simon, Lukas, Michael, and his boyfriend Christian."

"Dad," asked Craig, "how do YOU know the names of the members of 'At the Majestic'?"

"You know my friend Lars that you'll be staying with?" The boys nodded. "Well, those are his sons."

"OMG!" exclaimed Craig. "No way!!"

Oliver rejoiced in Craig's happiness. It had been such a rough school year and now it seemed their shared hopes and dreams of what a move to southern California could mean to them were coming true. He scooted his chair closer to Craig and put his arm around his boyfriend. When Craig turned towards him, Oliver leaned in and the boys from Montana shared a kiss.

----------------------

Jack ran and opened the front door.

"Happy Birthday!" called out Sean and Sebbie. Rodrigo smiled which for him was as good as a happy birthday greeting.

"Thanks guys! Com'on in! We're hanging out in my room until the pizza gets here."

Presents were set on the coffee table and shoes left at the door before the boys ran upstairs to join Mochi and Derek. "Hey guys!" greeted Derek. Mochi was too involved in Minecraft to peel his eyes away from the screen at that moment.

Jack shut his bedroom door and Derek took the lead. "Mochi. Off the game and over here. We've got serious business to discuss." Mochi already knew that was coming and had gotten to a place to save his game and log off.

"So, what's up?" asked Sebbie. Seeing Jack as serious as Derek set the friends on high alert.

This was demonstrated best when Rodrigo chose not to remain silent. "What's wrong, Jack?"

Derek looked to Jack and back to their friends. "Guys, Jack's got something to share with you guys and you have to keep it a secret. After he tells you, we need to come up with a plan to help."

The boys agreed they'd keep Jack's secret before the meekest boy of the group told his story. If he hadn't been talking to Derek about his situation and this was the first time he'd told anyone, it would have been difficult for him to articulate the series of events. But Derek helped him build his confidence and get past his emotional anxiety. Jack laid out his history with his Uncle John. Derek only jumped in to add details to the encounter he shared with Jack when John walked in on the fifth graders in Jack's bedroom.

"Jack doesn't want this to happen anymore, but he doesn't want to tell his parents either," Derek explained further. "The problem is, his Uncle John always has him spend the night for Jack's birthday. We think he's going to try to have Jack over tomorrow night. What do we do?"

The boys sat quietly as they reflected on what they'd just learned. Sean finally said what had crossed the minds of each of the other boys. "Wish Michael was here. He knows how to deal with assholes like your Uncle John."

The other boys agreed that Michael had done a fine job of that. Sebbie added, "We've all heard Michael's stories." The boys agreed since most 11-year-olds aren't going to suspect the rumors they've heard were a bit embellished. "Let's start there and figure this out for ourselves." More nodding ensued.

Mochi, the most analytical of the bunch, got right to the point. "Just don't go to your uncle's apartment."

"How do I do that without my parents wondering why?" asked Jack. He and Derek already came to the same conclusion but they couldn't figure out how to make it happen. The boys threw out ideas for discussion, but each new idea seemed less and less plausible.

Rodrigo finally added his two cents. "What if Derek spends the night?" Conversation stopped as the boys pondered the new idea.

"Didn't you say his uncle is scared of you?" asked Sean.

"I think he is," said Jack, reaching out and taking Derek's hand in his. He was really proud of how well Derek handled John when they met. Since Jack and Derek had become a couple, they've slowly exhibited more and more gestures of endearment in front of their friends. Derek gave Jack a somber smile and squeezed his hand. He wished they didn't have to have such a serious discussion on Jack's birthday. He let go of Jack's hand and pulled his phone out to ask his mom if he could stay Saturday night too.

Sebbie added, "Do you think your parents will let him stay?"

"Yeah," replied Jack with a nod. "We're doing a family birthday dinner tomorrow and my mom said I could invite Derek. He's got them fooled thinking he's all sweet and innocent or something." Jack tried to look innocent batting his eyelashes for emphasis. All the boys burst out laughing. Each and every one of their parents knew exactly what a wild, crazy boy Derek had been until recently. Derek gave Jack a playful punch in the arm.

"What do you think your uncle will do if he shows up and finds Derek here too?" Mochi asked. "You need to be prepared for anything."

Before the boys could consider this part of their plan, Derek's phone vibrated. "I can stay," he confirmed as he texted his mother back. "Maybe if we make plans for after dinner, like playing games or watching a movie with your parents, then your mom won't think it's strange if your uncle comes over and you say 'no' to spending the night."

"Let's go ask." Jack led the way as the boys followed anxious to see if their plan would be put into motion.

Jack's parents were in the kitchen preparing for the arrival of the pizzas and decorating the confetti cupcakes for the party. Kellen set his glass of wine down and Francis looked up from the cupcakes. They looked at the gaggle of boys suspiciously. They were used to one or two of them approaching to ask permission, but not all at once.

The boys froze in the dubious stare from the adults. Kellen broke the stalemate by asking, "Is there something you need to tell us?"

"You guys said Derek could come to my birthday dinner tomorrow. We were thinking it would be fun to go to a movie or have a game night or something and maybe Derek could spend the night?"

For some reason, Kellen and Francis felt the "we" was the entire posse, not just Derek and Jack. Neither immediately answered their son while they mulled over why all the boys would want to ask that question.

"I would enjoy that," concluded Francis. "It's been a while since we had a game night. Don't you agree, Kellen?" Jack's dad nodded and lifted his wineglass to his lips. "We'd be happy to have you join us and spend the night, Derek. You'll need to ask your mother."

"I did." He quickly stepped up and shoved his phone in Francis' face to show her his text exchange with his mother.

"Oh," she said in surprise. "I see. Well, good. I'll talk to your mother to work out the details."

"Thank you, Mrs. Vance," said Derek politely.

Kellen wrapped up the conversation. "Pizzas will be here in about 20 minutes. You boys head on back upstairs and make sure you wash your hands before you come back down."

The boys turned and raced back up to Jack's room. Their plan to protect Jack was working perfectly. Now it was time to celebrate Jack's 11th birthday!

Once the boys were out of earshot, Kellen turned to Francis. "Why do I feel like we were set up?"

"I'm wondering that myself. But whatever it is, it must be a win-win situation. Our 11-year-old and his boyfriend want to spend an evening with us. We need to take advantage of that because I doubt it will be long before they're embarrassed to even have parents."

"Here, here," cheered Kellen, raising his glass to Francis. She grabbed her glass of Merlot. The clink preceded their partaking in another drink of wine. He swallowed and set his glass back down. "It still seems strange to speak of Jack and Derek as boyfriends. I mean, they're still in elementary school."

"I know," agreed Francis. She took another drink before setting her wine aside and returning to the cupcakes. She began piping the yellow and green swirled icing onto the next treat. "You know, I don't know how long it's been since I've seen Jack so happy. It seems like the last year or so something's been weighing on him. Now he's back to his smiling, happy self. Do you think he was struggling with being gay?"

"Maybe. Look how much Derek has calmed down once he was allowed to come out. You're right, though. I should stop thinking about whether or not Jack is or isn't gay and appreciate that whatever he and Derek have, he's really happy."

----------------------

The sun was setting just to the right of the Oceanside Municipal Fishing Pier. Seated by the windows facing North Pacific Street, Lars reached out and took Zach's hand. Even with the restaurant buzzing with activity, the men were in their own world enjoying cocktails and a romantic view of the ocean. Setting down his 333 Mule, the restaurant's take on the classic Moscow Mule, Lars turned to look Zach in the eyes before he spoke.

"I'm sorry I haven't made time to do more things like this. I worry that you'll feel like I've taken advantage of you. You moved in and started school and sometimes it feels like I fill all your free time with helping the boys. The band, running around to lacrosse matches, or manning the house while I'm out running boys here and there. You help with the truckloads of laundry, cooking meals to feed a small army, and you're doing everything without batting an eye. Since you joined the family, I've never been happier. It's been better than I ever imagined it would. You're amazing and I love you."

Zach smiled and looked away embarrassed. Looking back out the window, he sipped his drink. It was a house specialty, the Spicy Pineapple. It was a blend of Tito's vodka with pineapple juice, chipotle pineapple syrup, lime juice and jalapeño. He squeezed Lars' hand and thought about how much he loved this man. Nothing that Lars could ever ask of him would be too much. Returning his gaze to Lars', he said, "I've loved every second of it. It's only been a few months, but I couldn't imagine my life being any different. I'm with a man I love more than anything in the world. I'm successful at school and preparing for my dream career. I'm surrounded by love, and joy, and happiness. Carol and the boys add so much to my life. And you know my love of playing music. Getting to join the boys on stage has gotten me farther than all the success I've had with every band I played with before combined. I feel like my life is perfect and am grateful every day for you and the boys."

"Now that Matthew's settled in and Carol is in East Harbor full time, let's make a point to find more time for ourselves," said Lars. "I don't want us to get so wrapped up in everything that we lose sight of what we have and drift apart." Zach nodded in agreement. It was one of the most romantic moments in their relationship and each man felt so deeply in love with the other, they didn't want the moment to end.

Of course, nothing lasts forever. The waitress of 333 Pacific arrived with their meal. An order of Sweet Chili Calamari was set on the table for the couple to share. Zach had ordered the Sashimi Grade Ahi Tuna Stack. In the middle of the white plate was a square tower. Its base was sushi rice. Above the layer of white rice was a green layer of avocado and cucumber. Next was a layer of mango vinaigrette and the top layer was the pink Ahi tuna. Fresh cilantro was sprinkled on top with edamame dotting the plate around the tower. It looked like a work of art.

Lars' meal was as equally appetizing. The Skuna Bay Salmon was cooked to perfection with a mustard balsamic glaze. The filet was draped across fingerling potatoes and green beans and topped with a cluster of arugula. Surrounding the dish was a circle of tomato vinaigrette and capers.

Before digging into their meal, Lars pulled Zach to him and gave his partner a kiss full of love. Some of the other restaurant guests applauded the act of love between the two hot men, embarrassing both. Lars lifted his glass to the other guests in gratitude before enjoying his meal.

"So, what do you think Carol is doing right now?" asked Zach, yet to take a bite. He was searching for a graceful way to eat his meal.

Lars savored his salmon before answering. "Knowing Carol, since the boys went to the theater to hang out or practice or whatever they decide to do, she's enjoying the peace and solitude of having her house to herself. Before moving Michael into his room next door, she only had Lukas and Simon at night when she was home. Now that she's home every night and Michael's room is over there, she's got boys tromping through the house daily, and music, video games, and laughter flooding the house. Now, I don't think she'd have it any other way, but she does enjoy quiet and curling up with a good book."

He was mostly correct. Carol was enjoying having the house to herself. She was watching a docuseries on Netflix while relaxing in the hot tub.

Something Zach had been meaning to tell Lars popped into his head. "Oh! I got permission to take the time off from my clinicals. When are you gonna tell the boys?"

"I think we should tell them tomorrow."

----------------------

"You're home kind of late," stated Kris when Christian entered the kitchen.

"Yeah, sorry." Christian went straight to the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of water. He chugged half before turning a chair away from the dining room table to sit close to his father. Kris was at the desk busy working on managing work and family schedules when Christian approached. "I was teaching Michael how to shuffle and kinda lost track of time."

Kris knew this type of interest--Christian pulling up a chair-- was reserved only for when his son needed to talk about something. He organized his work so he could return to it the next day before turning his attention to more important things. He took a sip of his kokekaffe, coffee steeped in boiling water like tea, and asked, "Are you okay?"

Christian was surprised by the question. It unlocked the box he'd been pushing his emotions into and tears welled up in his eyes.

"Com'on." Kris stood and took his son by the hand. He walked him to the living room. Sitting at the end of the sofa, Kris pulled Christian down next to him and held him tightly. His son latched onto his body for comfort. Kris rubbed Christian's back until the teen was able to tell what was wrong.

Ana was ready for bed and wondered where the men in her life were. She wandered into the living room and saw Kristoffer comforting their son. "Is everything alright?" She joined them on the couch. She reached down and untied Christian's shoes and lifted his feet into her lap. To accommodate his mother, Christian rotated his body. He came to rest lying across his father's lap with his head on the arm of the sofa and his legs stretched across his mother's. Ana took his sweaty socks off and tossed them on the floor before massaging her boy's feet.

He was growing up. She couldn't deny it. Christian was at the crossroads between boyhood and manhood. Just over a week away from turning 14, her little boy was transforming quickly. His size 10 feet were evidence.

The caressing of his feet relaxed Christian. It had worked since he was a baby. While his mother worked on his feet, his father gently rubbed his chest. The Olsen family sat quietly until Christian spoke. "How do you know someone loves you?"

Ana and Kristoffer looked at each other and did that thing where parents communicate with each other without saying anything.

"Are you meaning Michael?" asked Ana.

Christian nodded. "I tell him I love him but he never says it back." He fought back the tears.

"Have you asked him about that?" asked Kris. Christian shook his head.

"Well," Kris added, "I don't know how you'll ever know what Michael's thinking unless you ask him."

Ana squeezed Christian's feet to get his attention. "I know it hurts, kjære (sweetheart). But what hurts is not that Michael doesn't say it back. What's hurting you is the stories you are telling yourself about why Michael hasn't said it back. You're telling yourself that he doesn't love you and that is not something you know for sure. Your brain is filling in the gaps."

"But what other reason is there? I tell him I love him and if he feels the same way, he would say it back."

"Oh, I bet there are a lot of reasons," stated Kris. "For one, how old is Michael?"

"Almost 12," stated Christian.

"I think saying 'I love you' to someone is pretty scary for an almost 12-year-old boy."

Ana added another possibility. "And who is Michael's father?"

Christian rolled his eyes. His mom deserved it for asking such an obvious question. "Dr. Meijer."

"I bet Dr. Meijer gives Michael lots of advice. Do you think he might tell Michael to be careful about telling someone you love them?" She waited as Christian considered what she was saying. "Saying 'I love you' is a very powerful statement and it should be used carefully. I would expect Dr. Meijer to have told Michael that."

"Are you saying I shouldn't tell Michael I love him?"

Kris held Christian's cheek and wiped a tear away with his thumb. "No, sønn (son). If you love him, tell him. But you know better than anyone the things Michael has been through. He's younger than you, his life has been very different from yours, and you simply can't assume to know why he isn't telling you how he feels."

"Christian," asked Ana, "has Michael ever given you any reason to think he doesn't love you back?"

He shook his head.

"And your father and I have only seen things that make us believe he loves you more than anything. We see the way he looks at you. It's the same way you look at him."

"So, what your mother's saying..." started Kristoffer trying to lift Christian into a sitting position, "...damn you're getting heavy!" The family burst into laughter. "What I was saying is, you aren't going to know how Michael feels unless you ask him. Don't jump to conclusions when you can simply have a conversation to know for sure. In the meantime, enjoy the love you have for him and the affection he returns. You are both young and have years ahead of you. There's nothing wrong with taking it slow."

Ana pulled Christian into a hug. "Besides, I'm not ready for you to grow up yet."

----------------------

Carol draped the bath towel over the bar to dry and slipped into her cerise silk bathrobe. The plush Egyptian cotton lining caressed her skin reminding her why she'd spent the money for this particular luxury. Checking the clock again, it was nearly ten and she was anxious for the boys to return from the theater. She knew the threats to their safety were eliminated, but the incident with Lewis and Trajan had her a bit rattled. She would certainly have been more at ease if Zach was with them, but Lars and Zach planned a well-deserved romantic evening together. Even if Michael planned to spend the night next door, the boys, and in particular her son, were to check in with her when they got home.

iPad in hand, Carol curled up in the over-sized armchair she kept by the window in her bedroom and turned on her reading light. With a few taps on the screen, she opened her Kindle app and found her way back to the Carolina colonies in the 17th century. Robert McCammon's Speaks the Nightbird was a period mystery novel in which the author was diligent to be historically accurate. The fact that this was the first in a series of books featuring the young Matthew Corbett and his acquaintances thrilled Carol--the rest of the published editions in this series waited in her Kindle library to be devoured.

Absorbed in her reading, she wasn't aware of Michael's return until the boy was standing in front of her. Seeing his red eyes, she knew why he was there. "Hey sweetie. What's wrong?" She set her iPad aside and made room for Michael to join her on the chair. Wrapping her youngest up into a hug, Carol sighed. She felt a twinge of guilt thinking about how much she enjoyed doting over Michael. In many ways, she felt like she was making up for time she lost with Simon being on the road so much of his childhood. But soon, Michael too would be too old for moments like this, so she cherished them.

Michael told Carol the story of his relationship with Gavin. Though she was aware of it and Lars had filled her in on the details, she found it interesting how Michael had intellectualized the experience and was working to apply the lessons he learned from his father about the different kinds of love and the importance of being certain before you tell someone that you love them. 'Good lessons,' reasoned Carol, 'but maybe a bit too intellectual.'

"Michael," she said in a soothing tone, "what do I always tell you to stop doing?"

"To stop over thinking things."

She ran her fingers through his hair then kissed the crown of his head. "I think you are doing it again."

There was a pause as Carol reconsidered her next questions. On one hand, part of her wondered if an 11-year-old should even be kissing their boyfriend or girlfriend and how inappropriate her question would be. On the other, it was Michael. He wasn't a typical 11-year-old. Besides, from what she'd heard about Derek, it was clear Michael wasn't the only 11-year-old in East Harbor doing some kissing.

"What do you feel when you and Christian kiss?"

Michael sighed and snuggled into Carol. "It's like the entire world goes away and I feel tingly all over."

"Then I'd say you were in love with him."

Michael turned to face Carol and sat back on his heels. "But what if I'm wrong? I don't want to hurt him. That would be the worst thing I could ever do."

"Michael, that right there, the fact that you care about Christian's feelings more than your own. That is love little one. That is the precious love everyone looks for."

Michael leaned forward and gave Carol a hug. "I love you, mom."

Carol held Michael and whispered, "I love you too."

----------------------

It was dark but Rodrigo was almost as familiar with Jack's home as his own. The boys had shared so many overnights and play dates at each other's houses they all felt at home no matter where they were. The night lights kept him from stepping on his friends, helped him find his way down the hallway, and lit the bathroom when he entered. The water closet hid the toilet behind the double vanity. He didn't notice the noises coming from around the corner. He walked into the water closet and flipped the light switch. Three gasps echoed in the small room.

Rodrigo stepped back bumping into the wall unable to tear his eyes away from the scene before him. Derek was naked, slouched down on the toilet with his legs in the air. Jack was equally naked on all fours. The slobber on Jack's face and around Derek's exposed, glistening, dilated hole told the rest of the story.

Derek's eyes traveled from Rodrigo's stunned face to his tented boxers. Both he and Jack had used Rodrigo has a jack-off fantasy and now seemed to be the perfect opportunity to change their fantasy to reality. Looking Rodrigo in the eyes, Derek reached for Jack's head and pulled him back into place. Jack's nose bumped Derek's erection as he slurped on this boyfriend's balls. Derek pushed on the top of Jack's head the get him back working on his hole. When Jack's tongue hit its target, Derek emitted a guttural groan. Rodrigo saw Derek's boner twitch when Jack stuck his tongue into Derek's backdoor.

Derek watched Rodrigo to judge his friend's reaction to seeing him and Jack having sex. When Rodrigo didn't run away, Derek decided there must be some interest. He was convinced Rodrigo was completely straight, but in his experience, Derek knew not to rule out a straight boy having fun with the gay boys.

Rodrigo watched as Derek moved his leg to make room along the wall. Derek beckoned him to approach. Having never even looked at porn before, Rodrigo was completely out of his element. He was mesmerized by the scene before him and was drawn in by Derek's invitation. He shuffled closer until Derek was able to grab the hem of his boxers and pull him into place.

Jack watched as Derek ran his hand up and down Rodrigo's muscular thigh. His excitement grew watching Derek's hands explore and he moaned when the hand disappeared into the leg of the boxers. Rodrigo shuddered when Derek's fist clutched his rigid pole. "Oh shit," he groaned. Derek took that as a green light and yanked the boxers to the floor.

There was one more step Derek wanted to take to ensure Rodrigo was game for what he had planned. After some simple instructions, Rodrigo didn't hesitate, he stepped over Derek and leaned forward slipping his pulsing four inches into Derek's mouth. Derek watched the smattering of dark pubs surrounding the base of Rodrigo's cock pound his lips as the 11-year-old's dropping balls bounced off his chin. Quickly, the alpha male in Rodrigo awakened and he took over fucking Derek's mouth. That's when Derek knew his friend was ready for the main event. It was Jack's birthday after all.

Derek pushed Rodrigo back and sat up. "Stay there, Jack," he whispered. Derek moved Rodrigo onto his knees behind Jack, knowing his beau would enjoy the thicker cock of the bigger, stronger boy. Derek spit in his hand and rubbed it on Jacks hole causing the boy to moan. Rodrigo's cock, still dripping with Derek's slobber, was directed by Derek to Jack's hole. "Push it in." Rodrigo grabbed Jack by the hips and slammed his cock in the boy's welcoming hole. Both boys moaned in pleasure.

Rodrigo took to fucking like a duck takes to water. He rabbit-fucked Jack who could only respond by resting his head on the toilet seat and drooling on the floor.

Derek knew this would end way too quickly if he let things continue. He reached under Jack and helped the boy sit up. As a result, Rodrigo ended up sitting on his heels with Jack nestled on his lap grinding his ass on the cock stuck up it.

Derek straddled Rodrigo's knees facing Jack. "Happy birthday, sweetie," purred Derek. He leaned in and made out with Jack while his hands toyed with Jack's balls and masturbated his steely pole. Jack's sexual excitement rose as he and his boyfriend made out.

Rodrigo couldn't believe what was happening. His attention was split between the pleasure Jack's squirming ass was causing him or the show Jack and Derek were putting on right in front of him. He closed his eyes and let his head drop back. Moments later, Jack's ass seemed to clench his cock like a vice and pulsed. He had no idea how Jack was doing it, but the noises the boy was making sure made it seem like Jack was enjoying it.

Derek held Jack as he came back down. Once again, Derek was amazed at the intensity of his friend's orgasm. He helped Jack off Rodrigo's lap and sat him on the floor before pulling Rodrigo's legs out straight. Propping himself up against the wall, the dark-haired boy watched Derek throw his leg over his hips and slip his cock into the second hole of the night. Derek placed a hand on Rodrigo's shoulder as he rode his friend's hard rod and masturbated himself. He worked his hips and squeezed his ass, working over his friend's pulsing cock. Jack joined in running his hands over Rodrigo's bronze chest feeling the developing muscles and tweaking the boy's nipples.

Rodrigo didn't know what was happening to his body. He felt hot all over and he suddenly felt like he had to go.

"Shit. Gotta pee." He started to push Derek off but Derek held his ground.

"You're gonna cum," explained Derek. "Just let it happen." He was getting close too and shifted into high gear.

Jack pinched one of Rodrigo's nipples and twisted gently while he dove into his boyfriend's lips.

Electrical charges flashed through Rodrigo's body as he built to the first climax of his young life. His socked feet shuffled across the floor as he groaned and panted.

Derek won the race. He threw his head back and with a grunt, squirted three streaks of his immature cum across his friend's torso. The flexing of Derek's ass took Rodrigo over the edge.

"Ugh! Oh! Ah!" he called out with each deposit of young boy cum he made in Derek's ass.

Derek remained on Rodrigo's lap until both recovered from their orgasms. He also stayed put enjoying the fact Rodrigo never went soft.

"Did you like that?" asked Derek. The smirk on his face saying he already knew the answer.

"Yeah. That was awesome."

"Thanks for joining me in giving Jack his birthday present." Derek slipped off Rodrigo's pole and picked up his and Jack's underpants.

"Yeah, thanks!" said Jack. Then he surprised Rodrigo by giving him a peck on the lips. Naked, Jack and Derek walked back to Jack's bedroom and crawled into bed together leaving Rodrigo dazed on the floor in the bathroom.

SATURDAY, MAY 2

Michael tossed and turned, unable to get to sleep. Visions of Christian's disappointment flashed through his mind and tore at his heart. Carol finally convinced him that it was okay to tell Christian that what he felt was love. Now it was the agony of knowing Christian went to bed upset because of him. He tapped the screen on his iPhone. It woke to reveal the time--12:13 am. He felt like he'd never make it until morning. Dragging his covers to the side, Michael hopped off his bed and grabbed his acoustic guitar. He made his way quietly down the stairs and out the back door of the house. Though the gate, he headed down the driveway and padding down the sidewalk, careful of his bare feet.

He stopped and picked up some pebbles from the edge of his old driveway before entering the yard. The grass felt cool on his feet and tickled his toes. Throwing the guitar strap over his shoulder, he transferred the pebbles into his left hand so he could throw with his right.

*tink*

The first pebble caught a pane of glass in the upstairs window. Michael waited then threw the second. Nothing. The screen prevented the pebble from making any noise at all. With careful aim, Michael threw the next pebble.

*tink*

A dim light shown on the ceiling in the upstairs window. Michael reasoned Christian was checking his phone. He quickly threw another pebble.

*tink*

The light from the phone danced across the ceiling as Christian climbed out of bed and suspiciously peered around the corner of the window frame. Seeing Michael, he opened his window.

"Michael!" he said in a loud whisper. "What are you doing?"

Michael tossed the remaining pebbles into the driveway and placed his fingers on the neck of the guitar and began to strum.

Quietly at first, Michael began to serenade the boy of his dreams. Losing himself in the lyrics and music, his voice grew until he was signing out loud with all his heart.

So honey now
Take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the light of a thousand stars
Place your head on my beating heart
I'm thinking out loud
Maybe we found love right where we are

As he ended the chorus of Ed Sheeran's "Thinking Out Loud", Ana and Kristoffer opened the front door of their home and watched their son's boyfriend sing his heart out. Lights up and down Maple Street were turned on and windows opened as the neighbors witnessed Michael's expression of love. Neighbors initially frustrated by being awakened in the middle of the night found their anger fade when they realized what was happening.

Michael finally opened his eyes and looked directly into Christian's while he sang the final lines of the song.

Oh baby, we found love right where we are
Yes we found love right where we are

Scattered applause came from various homes, much to Michael's embarrassment. Someone even gave a whistle.

"Michael," called Ana, "shouldn't you have some clothes on?" That's when he realized he was only in his Marvel comic boxer briefs. His body language gave away his chagrin.

"I think Christian is waiting for you upstairs. Does your father know where you are?"

As Michael entered the house, he stated, "No ma'am. I left my phone at home."

Kris took the guitar from Michael and placed it on the bench. "We'll let him know you are spending the night here. Now get to bed."

Michael turned on his heels and ran up the stairs and leapt into Christian's arms. "I'm so sorry I didn't tell you sooner."

"Please tell me again."

Michael dropped to the floor and the boys looked into each other's eyes. Christian was on the shorter side for his age and Michael's growth spurt had the younger boy catching up to his blond-haired friend. "I love you Christian. I love you so much!"

Christian took Michael by the hand and led him into his bedroom. Turning back to face Michael, Christian placed his hands on Michael's cheeks and kissed him passionately, causing Michael's toes to curl. Then Christian dropped his hands to Michael's sides and pulled their bodies together. Michael's arms laced around Christian's neck while Christian's hands roamed over the muscles in Michael's back. Their tongues explored the other's mouth with a vigor and urgency neither boy had ever experienced.

A groan rose from deep within Michael when Christian's hands slipped under the waistband of his boxer briefs and grabbed hold of his ass. Their erections pressed together. Christian began grinding himself into Michael while he held the boy in place. Not that Michael had any intention of going anywhere. With a few tugs, Christian managed to get Michael's briefs to drop to the floor. Then he dropped his own.

Michael broke the kiss and gave Christian a serious look. "Are you sure?" Up to this point, Michael had yet to see Christian completely naked.

To answer, Christian thrust his hips forward smashing his erection against Michael. The sensation of the slippery glans dragging across Michael's body sent a shudder through the blonde's body. Unable to wait any longer, Christian dragged Michael to his bed where they tumbled across the sheets.

Laughing and giggling, the boys wrestled a bit until they ended up with Christian lying on his back and Michael sitting on his thighs.

In a hushed tone, Michael asked, "May I see you?"

Christian reached over and turned on the small lamp next to his bed. After the immediate shock, their eyes adjusted so they could admire the other's body. Christian's heritage was evident. His porcelain skin was dotted with some freckles, but otherwise flawless. His developing chest was capped by two small, flat pink nipples. Michael reached out and ran his finger across one and it rose to attention. He then traced his fingertips across the ripples of Christian's abs down to the teen's hairless groin. Michael admired the beauty of the large pink nut sac and the smooth, white unblemished cock with its shiny pink head poking out of its foreskin.

With his left hand, Michael grabbed Christian's cock by its base and helped it stand at attention. A string of precum stretched from near Christian's belly button to the top of his pole. Michael's touch made Christian feel like his entire body was vibrating. Michael placed his other hand on top of the first and the head of Christian penis still protruded from his grasp.

"Ohhhhhhh..." groaned Christian. It was the first time someone else had touched him there and the feelings were more intense than he'd ever imagined.

Michael gave Christian two, two-fisted pumps. The boy under him clutched his sheets and arched his back, nearly losing his load right then. Michael placed the erection back where he found it and rested his hands on his thighs to allow Christian to cool down for a moment.

It took a minute or two for Christian to regain his composure. When he did, he reached down to Michael's legs and pulled. The younger boy understood what he wanted and rose to his knees straddling Christian's hips. The teen's shaking hand reached out. With a finger he reached under Michael and stroked his balls from back to front. The intensity of the touch caused Michael's cock to pulse and a stream of precum dripped from his pee slit to the shaft of Christian's erection. It tickled the teen when the viscous fluid dripped down his shaft and pooled on his stomach.

Next, Christian wrapped his hand around Michael's fat four inches causing the tween to nearly pass out. Michael fell forward, catching himself with his hands on either side of his lover's shoulders.

"Are you alright?" asked Christian.

Michael answered breathlessly. "No one's ever made me feel this way." He lowered his body onto Christian's and the boys kissed again.

----------------------

Michael reached up and pulled Christian down into another kiss. Christian moved his arms to let Michael's legs drop to the mattress causing his wilting member to slip out.

"I'm glad we waited," stated Christian when he came up for air.

Michael melted every time Christian looked at him that way. It wasn't lust, it was love--pure, unadulterated love. "I am too. I think it was the best ever, and it was because there was no doubt about how much I love you."

Christian dropped to the bed next to Michael exhilarated to finally have had sex with Michael... three times. While his heart continued to race with love and affection, his eyes drooped as exhaustion made its presence known.

"Scoot over," ordered Michael, nudging Christian with his butt.

Christian rolled onto his side and moved to the edge of the bed next to the wall. Michael hurriedly scooched back into Christian and away from the sweaty side of the bed. Adjusting the blanket for comfort the two lovers quickly dropped into a deep sleep to dream sweet dreams.

Once again, Christian woke with the familiar feeling someone was standing over him, watching him. It no longer scared him. As a matter of fact, the presence made him feel warm and loved. His boyfriend sat up and faced the darkness of the bedroom. 'Michael must have felt it too,' thought Christian.

"Michael, my love, are you happy?" came a voice from the dark.

"Yes mom. But I miss you," said Michael, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

"Do you love him?"

"Christian?" asked Michael, confused by the voice he was hearing.

Christian sat up looking to see who Michael was speaking to.

"Yes, my boy. I brought him here for you. He's the one."

"You brought Christian for me?"

"Yes, baby boy. He is your soulmate."

Michael turned to look at Christian. He could make out a shocked look on the boy's face. "You hear her too, don't you?"

Christian slowly nodded in disbelief. Reaching to the shelf above his headboard, Christian grabbed his glasses and slipped them on, hoping to see its source.

Michael pointed and as his eyes adjusted, Christian made out a faint image that could be a figure standing in his bedroom. But neither boy was convinced they were really seeing anything.

"How is Matthew?"

Christian definitely heard the voice this time and looked to Michael for his response. "Broken. He's not the same as before. There's something missing and I don't know how to fix him. He needs you mom. We both need you."

"I'm here for you. I'll always be here for you both."

A sob exploded from Michael chest and Christian's heart nearly broke. He pulled Michael to him and held his boyfriend as he exorcised more pain and grief from the loss of his mother.

Ana heard crying coming from upstairs. "Kris! Wake up. Something's wrong." When Michael's crying broke through to his consciousness, he was out of bed and right behind his wife as they scaled the staircase to check on the boys. They wondered how Michael spending the night might affect the boy. He seemed oblivious about what he was doing when he ran upstairs to be with their son. It seemed to them it was only a matter of time before Michael would realize where he was.

The light on the ceiling fan revealed the two boys cuddled together, Christian trying to comfort Michael. Ana hurried to the bed. Before she sat, she noticed cum stains on the dark blue sheets. Additionally, the smell of cum and ass permeated the air, but that was a conversation for another time. At this moment, Michael needed her. She pulled the covers over the dirty sheet and sat on the bed next to the boys. When she held out her arms to Michael, he crawled to her revealing his and her son's nakedness. Christian tried to pull the covers up over his boy bits, but Michael's weight made it nearly impossible. He finally gave up that strategy and scooted under the blankets so his mom couldn't see him.

"It was my mom," explained Michael between sobs. "She was here."

Ana stroked Michael's back and attempted to sooth the boy. "We know, honey. We know." Kris handed his wife a towel from Christian's bathroom to wrap around the younger boy then joined them on the bed.

"How are you doing, Christian?" asked Kris.

Christian did a quick self-assessment. He found that he was partly freaked out by his parents being in his bedroom with him and Michael naked after having sex. The other part was freaked out by what he just witnessed. 'Ghosts don't exist,' he kept telling himself.

"Mom," Christian corrected, "he's not saying that his mom once lived in this house. He's saying that she was here, tonight."

That got Ana's attention. She looked at Kris and then Christian. "Is that true, Michael?" Michael nodded.

"But..." Ana started to say something when Christian cut her off.

"I saw her too."

----------------------

"Hey boys," said Lars with a clap of his hands. They knew that to mean he had an announcement to make. "We have a couple of things to discuss with Christian's parents and then we'll meet in the family room. Got it?"

The boys stated their verbal agreements and watched all five adults file into Dr. Meijer's office.

"Ugh!" grunted Michael, folding his arms and pouting.

"What's with you?" asked Simon. The boys all headed into the Meijer's family room to wait for the 'rents.

"I know what they're talking about."

"What?" asked Lukas, anxious to hear the gossip.

"Don't worry Michael," stated Christian. "You're not crazy."

Matthew's concern grew. "What happened?"

The boys sat on the sectional and waited for Michael to spill his guts.

"Go ahead," urged Christian, "they're gonna hear about it eventually." He put his arm around Michael's shoulders in solidarity.

"Christian's parents are in the office telling dad I need to be carted off to the loony bin."

"Why?" asked Simon, Lukas, and Matthew as one.

"I saw mom last night."

There was silence.

He backed up and told them the story about going to Christian's and spending the night.

"Huh? You spent the night at Christian's last night?" Matthew was confused. "You came home with us last night. Wait? You actually went into Christian's house last night?"

He backed up a bit more and explained about taking his guitar and singing to Christian to tell him he loves him and of course, the entire story got off track as the older boys congratulated Michael and Christian. Of course, Lukas wanted to know if they had sex and the shade of red Christian's face turned revealed the truth to all.

Lukas dropped the topic. He knew he would hear more when he could get Michael alone. "So, what happened after you guys did it?"

Michael rolled his eyes then continued the story. "Christian said sometimes he feels like someone is watching him when he's in his room. Last night we both woke up and then we heard her. Her voice sounded like it was far away, but it was her."

Simon jumped in to get clarification. "You BOTH heard the voice?"

"Yeah," confirmed Christian, "and I saw her too."

Simon and Lukas continued to ask questions while Matthew sat quietly. For the oldest Meijer boy, it was like an old wound had been ripped open.

Michael noticed Matthew's distress and crawled across the sectional to his big bro. Holding Matthew's head to his chest, Michael whispered. "She asked about you."

That was all it took for Matthew to lose his composure. He held onto Michael and cried. Lukas and Simon joined Michael in comforting Matthew, but no one dared suggest he stop crying. They knew their big brother still had much bottled up inside.

When Matthew seemed to have cried himself out, Christian came over and asked Lukas to move so he could sit beside Matthew. "She said she would always be there for 'you both'. I thought she meant me and Michael, but she didn't. She meant you and Michael. Come spend the night sometime. She wants to see you." Matthew nodded then left to clean himself up before the parents returned.

When the adults joined the boys in the family room, the boys tried to look respectable. They were ready to offer Michael support during the difficult conversation that lay ahead. Michael took Christian's hand in his and prepared for the worst.

"Boys, we've been talking for a while and we're happy to say the planning has worked out and it's all a go, if it's okay with the five of you," started Lars.

The boys were confused.

Kristoffer continued where Lars left off. "This summer we are going to visit family in Norway. When we brought this up with Christian a couple months ago, we asked him if he'd like to take a friend. Michael, your parents have agreed to allow you to go with us to Norway this summer."

"YES!" exclaimed Christian pumping his fist in the air.

"Really?!" Michael was just as excited and couldn't believe Christian had kept it a secret from him. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"It was so long ago, I forgot!"

"But you two won't have very far to travel," added Lars. "Christian, before you join your family in Norway, we'd like you to come with us to Denmark."

"We're gonna go see farmor og farfar (grandma and grandpa)?!" Lukas jumped to his feet and rushed to hug his father.

Lars laid out the plan in more detail. After the end of the school year, he and Zach would take all five of the boys to visit his family's farm near Herning, Denmark for two and a half weeks. Towards the end of their visit, Kristoffer and Ana would be joining them and then driving Christian and Michael to visit their extended family in the area of Stavanger, Norway.

Carol noticed Matthew wasn't as excited about the vacation as the other four. She sat with him suspecting what was bothering him. "When does baseball start?"

"Next week." The disappointment in his tone was evident. "I can't miss that much of the season."

"I'll be staying here if you decide not to go. Or maybe you can go for a short while, so you don't miss any baseball? Your father's purchased the tickets. Let him know so he can plan accordingly. And don't worry about hurting anyone's feelings. You do what's best for you." She pulled him by the neck to kiss his forehead before getting up and heading to make coffee for the other coffee drinkers. Matthew shook his head and smiled for the first time.

----------------------

"This is incredible!" stated Oliver. Now that the sun was up, the view from their hotel suite was better than expected.

"Well, I wanted you two to be able to go to the beach while I'm working." At least that is how Will justified splurging on a room with two queen beds with an ocean view at the Tamarack Beach Resort in Carlsbad. Standing on their third-floor balcony, they could easily see over Carlsbad Boulevard to the beach and ocean.

"I'm ready," called Craig. "We'll be back after our run, dad."

"Be safe," he told Oliver. "When you get back, we'll see about getting you guys wet suits to go swimming or whatever."

"Thanks!" said Oliver before slipping through the sliding door and joining Craig.

The boys joked and jostled as they headed down the stairs and out the gate. The hotel was on the corner where they could cross the street and enter the beach area. They took a few minutes at the bottom of the ramp to stretch before crossing the sand to the water. They knew the sand by the water would be packed tight and would be the best for running.

"Which way?" asked Oliver.

Craig shrugged and turned north. They followed the beach up just past the Army and Navy Academy then ran out of real estate. They turned around and followed the beach south. After about five miles heading south, they again ran out of beach and turned to head back to the hotel. After eight miles, they decided to relax and walk the last two back to the hotel.

They laughed and dodged the waves. They held hands and rejoiced in their love for one another. They paused for a moment to share a kiss when a larger wave washed ashore and crashed into the boys. The splash wet both boys with cold, Pacific surf.

Craig and Oliver howled when the cold water soaked their shorts and legs. They jumped, skipped, and ran to escape the ocean and find warmth in the sun and sand. In a silly collision, they tumbled to the ground.

Craig rolled over, practically on top of Oliver. Looking down into those brown eyes, he said, "Now I understand why we need wetsuits to go in the water."

"Yeah," agreed Oliver, "but there are plenty of things we can do out of the water." He leaned up and commenced the kiss the ocean so rudely interrupted.

----------------------

Alejandro heard his ring tone and ran back to his room to find his phone. Skidding to a stop in his socks on the tile floor, he glanced around trying to remember where he left it. Seeing the charging cord strung across his bed, the ran over and dove for his phone before the call went to voicemail.

Seeing it was a Facetime call, he tapped the screen to answer.

"Buenos días!" greeted Michael.

"It may be morning for you, but it's almost night here," laughed Alejandro. He and Michael talked or texted every day, but he still got excited every time his "bestest friend in the world" called.

"What are you up to?" asked Michael.

"We had a late dinner and then I practiced my Spanish with abuela. What about you?"

"Not much here either," answered Michael.

Of all Michael's friends, Alejandro had a knack for knowing things. This was one of those instances where Alejandro immediately knew Michael had some big news. The left corner of his mouth scrunched up as he thought and then it came to him. "OMG! You two finally did it, didn't you?"

Michael was aghast. "How did you figure that out?"

"I don't know." He honestly didn't. To Alejandro, it seemed things just came to him. "Tell me. Tell me. Tell me!"

Michael recounted the story of singing to Christian and then spending the night.

"How was it?"

"The best EVER!" emphasized Michael. "All three times!"

"Damn! You two were horny for each other."

"Yeah, well. Oh! And it's bigger than I thought!" said Michael excitedly.

"Really? Oh wow!" said Alejandro. When Michael held up his hands his friend overseas could only reply, "Oh man!"

"Yeah, well, it's not all rosy. This morning, Christian's mom and dad told us we needed to have a talk. It was so embarrassing."

Alejandro laughed. "Did you guys keep them awake all night?"

"Well, yeah, but that's another story. This morning they must of talked to my dad about it." Then Michael had a realization. "OMG! The only time they could have talked about it was in dad's office and mom and Zach were in there too!"

Alejandro laughed harder. "What did they say to you?"

"They asked if I remembered my dad's rules about sex."

"Which ones?" asked Alejandro.

"That we can have sex as long as the adults don't hear it, smell it, or clean it."

Alejandro was rolling on his bed laughing at this point. "So which ones of those did they experience?"

Michael rolled his eyes. "I think all three."

Alejandro struggled to catch his breath. To him, this was one of the funniest stories he'd heard in a long time. "How? It was just last night. What did you guys do? Do it on the kitchen floor or something?"

"Ha ha. Very funny," joked Michael, taking Alejandro's ribbing in good nature. "No, they actually came into Christian's room just after we fell asleep."

"What? NO! Really?"

"Yeah. First, we didn't think about the fact that Christian's bed is directly over his parents."

"I'm sure you two weren't thinking about much at all last night."

"Second, we went to sleep without opening a window or turning on a fan," added Michael.

"Ewwwwwwwww."

"And to top it off, Christian had dark blue sheets on his bed."

"OH NO! You mean they saw..."

"Yeah," admitted Michael, shaking his head. "Christian's mom pulled the blankets up to hide them, but she didn't miss them. Christian is washing his own bedding from now on."

Alejandro burst out in laughter again and Michael waited patiently. "So why did they come up to Christian's bedroom when they knew you two had just knocked bones half the night?"

"Well, they came up to check on us because we..." Michael felt weird saying it. He didn't even know how Alejandro would react to such a tale. "We saw my mom's ghost last night."

The smile dropped from Alejandro's face. "Are you okay?"

"I think so." That was the truth. He felt good about the connection he made with what seemed to be his mother's ghost, but the fact that he was saying ghosts were real rocked his understanding of the world.

"Are you sure you saw a ghost?" asked Alejandro. "I mean, it was the first time you've spent the night in your old bedroom. I'd be freaked out if I were you. That would like fuck with your head or something."

"I know, but Christian heard her too."

"Heard?"

"Yeah, she spoke to me... to us."

"What did she say?"

"She said that she helped bring Christian into my life because he's my soulmate and she asked how Matthew was doing."

"Damn, bro. That's heavy."

The boys went quiet for a bit before Michael changed the subject.

"I've got more good news," offered Michael.

"What's that?"

"I'll be in Europe for a month or so this summer!"

The boys discussed Michael's travel plans and how they might get to see each other.

"I know you Americans think Europe is small, but it is still like over 1,500 miles between here and Denmark. But it is a lot easier to take a four-hour flight there than it is to fly from here to California!"

"Well, however far it is, I don't want to go to Europe and not see you. I miss you tons, even if we talk every day."

"I miss you to, el compañero (buddy)."

"So, did you see them today?" asked Michael.

Alejandro looked at him in confusion.

"Don't play dumb with me, mister. You know who I'm talking about. The twins."

Alejandro's cheeks flushed with excitement like they did every time he saw, or even thought about, the twins. He saw them for the first time about a week ago and couldn't get them out of his head. "No. I haven't been back in town."

Michael corrected, "You mean you've avoided going back into town." Despite all the work and growth Alejandro had made since they found him in LA, at times he was still that insecure teen. Then again, Michael also felt intimidated by the twins. From the pic Alejandro sent him, the twins were stunningly beautiful. "Look, it's not like you are going to propose marriage. Just get a phone number so you can talk to them.

"I know. I know," stated Alejandro. "We'll see."

----------------------

"Now remember, after the movie, Mrs. Price is picking you up to take you to get pizza. Then I'll be picking up you and Jaden to bring you home for your sleepover."

Isaac rolled his eyes. "Mom, my brain tumor messes with my abilities. It doesn't make me stupid."

Frustrated, she looked at her son with half a mind to cancel this whole "date" thing. But when she caught sight of his neatly combed hair and tucked in shirt, her heart melted. Isaac had never been one to care much for how he looked until today. She remembered her first crush and couldn't deny her son his. Isaac was correct. She did baby him because of his illness. Despite the years of treatments and therapy, he was growing up. He wasn't the scared 9-year-old just receiving the devastating diagnosis. He was a fighter. He was resilient. He was falling in love.

"I'm sorry. Enjoy the movie and call me if you need me."

"I will mom." Isaac reached across the emergency brake and gave his mom and hug. "Love you!" With that, he climbed out of the car and went hunting for his friends. They were meeting for the 3:00 showing of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and the boys agreed to get there with plenty of time to get snacks and the best seats. It didn't matter to Isaac that he'd already seen the movie. Jaden had too. It was seeing the movie with Jaden that was what was important.

Entering the second set of doors, Isaac heard his name being called from behind him. "Isaac! Wait up!" called Alex with Josh in tow. Josh's mother dropped the boys off and Alexis was picking them up so Josh could spend the night with Alex.

Isaac turned and was surprised when Alex gave him a hug. "Dude, you and Jaden make a cute couple. Be good to my bro."

Being out and in a couple was new to Isaac. Even being out with friends felt new to Isaac. So, Alex's hug, especially in front of another boy he'd never met, was embarrassing. All he could say to Alex was, "Thanks."

"Hi! I'm Josh!" said the auburn-haired boy who was bouncing in place burning off an overabundance of energy. "You're Jaden's boyfriend." When Alex released Isaac from the hug, Josh jumped in and took a turn himself. The idea of having a boyfriend, being on a date, knowing other gay couples...it was nearly too much for the excitable teen. He could hardly control himself.

Entering the lobby of the theater, they looked around for Jaden. They spotted him checking out the snacks at the concession stand. Alex reached Jaden first and gave him a bear hug. The hug surprised Jaden. It was uncharacteristic for their friendship, but he returned it anyway.

"You're in a good mood," laughed Jaden.

"Yeah. This is the best. You're the best," said Alex, holding Jaden tightly. It was the best way Alex knew to show Jaden his gratitude. After his weekly call with his sponsor and the Ala-Teen meeting on Friday, he was practicing his gratitude, and everything kept coming back to Jaden. His best friend in East Harbor, reuniting him with Grant, encouraging him to ask Josh to be his boyfriend -- Alex's life had never been better and it was all because of Jaden.

Josh was next hugging the swimmer. Jaden laughed, "You must be Josh!"

"Yeah," admitted Josh, "and thanks."

Jaden was puzzled since he'd never met Josh before. "For what?"

"For getting Alex to ask me out." Josh finally released Jaden who stepped over to Isaac.

"Hi cutie," said Jaden. It was the first time the two had been together in person since they agreed to be boyfriends.

Isaac looked away embarrassed by being called "cutie" by the hottest boy he'd ever seen in real life. He didn't see Jaden coming in for a hug. When he turned his head back to look at Jaden, the kiss Jaden targeted for Isaac's cheek landed awkwardly on his lips. They froze momentarily in shock before Jaden took advantage of the situation and moved into a more proper and loving kiss. It wasn't a work of art. Afterall, it was Isaac's first kiss, but none the less, it sent shivers through each boy's body.

"Hey," whined Josh, elbowing Alex. "I need a kiss too!" Josh had been anticipating his first kiss, but Alex was nervous, worried he'd never kissed anyone before -- at least not romantically. Josh moved in front of Alex and waited for Alex to make the first move. The darker boy stepped closer then leaned in and tilted his head. It wasn't much of a first kiss. They were both tight-lipped and felt awkward. But when their lips touched, their faces flushed with excitement. They couldn't wait to do more of that.

The four friends looked at each other and stifled giggles. They'd just shared kisses with their boyfriends in public. It felt naughty and empowering. The hormones running through their bodies made them feel different from how they'd ever felt before. Most importantly, they couldn't wait to do it again.

Jaden pulled out his phone and held it up for them to see. "My mom bought all of us passes for the movie as her treat. Isaac, I thought we'd just get some popcorn and drinks for the movie to save room for pizza later."

"That sounds good," said Isaac. But he'd probably have agreed to buying one of everything and gorging themselves if Jaden suggested it.

"Mom gave me some money to buy snacks with," said Josh. "Let's get popcorn and soda too."

Alex nodded and the boys bought their salty, buttery snacks and headed to the theater. The early show didn't draw that big of a crowd allowing the boys to have their choice of seats. Josh led the way and headed to his favorite seats right in the middle of the theater.

"Josh!" called Alex. Josh turned and Alex motioned with his head and eyes to go farther back in the theater.

When they got to the back row, they headed to the center of the row and got comfortable. The couples left a seat in between, but the boyfriends put down their shared armrest. That gave them one armrest with a drink holder and room to park the bucket of popcorn between them.

The two boyfriends made googly eyes at one another, ate popcorn and consumed large quantities of soda during the movie. But Josh's rules for how the world works, based largely on TV, movies and things he'd seen or read on social media, provided him a different set of expectations for what it means to go to the movies on a date.

Anxious to move things along, he moved the popcorn to an empty seat and snuggled next to Alex. Taking Alex's hand in his, he rested his head on Alex's shoulder and continued to enjoy one of his Marvel heroes. Another 20 minutes into the movie, Josh was frustrated Alex hadn't taken the hint. He shifted in his seat and kissed Alex on the cheek. Alex giggled and turned to face Josh to see what his boyfriend was up to. When he did, Josh kissed him on the lips with no intention of stopping. Alex chose to fully engage in the kissing for the lack of a reason not to.

When Jaden and Isaac finished their popcorn, Jaden moved the bowl to the seat between the couples. That's when he noticed Alex and Josh in a full-on tongue battle. Jaden tapped Isaac on the leg and encouraged him to have a look. Isaac's eyes about popped out of his head. That reaction told Jaden that he and his beau were on the same page. Instead of copying their friends, Jaden held Isaac's hand and gave him a sweet peck on the lips before they turned their attention back to Spidey's battle with the Vulture.

When the credits scrolled, Isaac and Jaden began energetically recounting their favorite scenes from the movie. Josh, who'd also seen the movie before, shared his favorites too. Alex, on the other hand, kept quiet. He hadn't seen much of the movie and his thoughts were elsewhere. Alex followed the other three from the theater with a bit of a swagger to his step. He was feeling on top of the world and a bit of a stud.

The conversation continued as the boys climbed into Mrs. Price's Honda Odyssey. Marlene laughed at the boys' enthusiasm. She knew the four hadn't really known each other before the movie and Josh had never met Isaac or Jaden. The way the boys were engaged in deep Marvel Universe conversation, you'd have thought they'd known each other forever.

She was thrilled Jaden's group of friends outside of his swim team had grown to include the Meijer boys, some of the lacrosse team, and now Alex, Josh, and Isaac. Watching the boys the best she could in the rearview mirror, she wondered if Jaden was even aware that he was still holding Isaac's hand. Her son and his boyfriend, something she was going to have to get used to, seemed so natural together.

It wasn't a long walk to the restaurant of their choosing but having to cross under the interstate and the heavy traffic, the parents agreed to drive the boys from the theater to the Pizza Station. It was a small, hole-in-the-wall pizzeria designed mainly for pick-up and delivery, but it did have a few tables for customers to wait for their pies, or eat in.

The boys shouted their thank yous to Mrs. Price as they stepped from the minivan. Jaden was the last out, giving his mother a hug and a kiss before joining his friends. She watched the boys all the way into the restaurant. When the boys navigated the parking blocks and curb, she saw Jaden take Isaac's hand. To most observers, it was two boys holding hands. To the keen observation of a knowing mother, it was Jaden lending Isaac a hand, so he didn't stumble or fall. The assistance was offered in a way that wouldn't embarrass Isaac or call out his different ability. Her heart swelled with pride and love for her son. She put the minivan into drive and headed for home, secure that the boys would behave themselves.

"Josh!" greeted Mr. Rossini, the owner of the Pizza Station. Josh and his mother were among his most frequent and loyal patrons. He came to the counter to speak to the boys. "It's good to see you. Who are your friends?"

"Hi Mr. Rossini!" chirped Josh in his sing-songy way. "This is my boyfriend, Alex. His best friend Jaden. And that's Isaac, Jaden's boyfriend. We just got done seeing a movie."

"Nice to meet you boys," said the large Italian man. In his white chef's jacket and torque blanche, Mr. Rossini could have been the model for every pizzaiolo caricature. "This looks like a special occasion. Are you eating in today?" The boys nodded. Mr. Rossini came out from behind the counter. "Let's set these tables up for you." He matched two like tables together to make a larger, four-person table and placed two chairs on opposite sides of the table. He quickly moved the extra tables and chairs away to give the boys more room for their dining experience. "Does anyone have any food allergies?" The boys each said "no" so he asked their favorite toppings. He jotted down the boy's favorites and their drink orders and returned to the kitchen.

When the waitress approached with their drink orders, she found Alex with his arm around Josh's shoulder and Jaden and Isaac holding hands on top of the table. "Here you boys go," said Karen, setting Cokes in front of Josh and Jaden, an orange Fanta in front of Isaac, and the root beer Alex ordered. She was a local college student who helped Mr. Rossini to help pay for her gas money and expenses at school.

"So, does Mr. Rossini do that often?" asked Jaden.

"Sometimes," said Josh. "He'll be playing with an idea for a pizza and then surprise us with it instead of taking our order. Don't worry, it's always really good!"

About 20 minutes later, Mr. Rossini and Karen returned with two pizzas. "Here is my 'Young Love Special' with all of your favorite toppings. Pepperoni for Josh, pineapple for Alex, jalapeños for Jaden, and mushrooms for Isaac. I also added some garlic, green peppers, and artichoke hearts." He turned and took his other creation from Karen and placed it before the boys. "This is my latest creation. Bleu cheese with pear halves over a garlic and rosemary vinaigrette. Let me know how you like, eh?"

The boys thanked the pair for the delicious looking pizzas and dug in. Jaden, Isaac and Alex grabbed slices of the traditional option while Josh, a veteran of Mr. Rossini's experimentation, went for the bleu cheese and pear combo.

"What are these?" asked Jaden.

Isaac looked over to see what Jaden was pointing at. "That's a piece of artichoke heart. Their good."

"You've had them before?"

Isaac nodded 'yes' as he took a bite. "Mmmmmmm..." Jaden watched as Isaac's eyes rolled back in his head and a huge smile stretched his cheeks.

"It must be good," laughed Jaden before shoving a piece in his own mouth for a bite.

"I know you guys think this bleu cheese pear pizza is weird, but it is so good," stressed Josh before taking another bite.

Joking, laughing, and gorging on pizza and soda filled the next hour of so. Mr. Rossini enjoyed the boys' presence. It reminded him why he opened a pizzeria in the first place.

Alex's phone chimed and he checked the screen. "Mom's here. We need to go Josh."

"Mr. Rossini?" called Josh. "Can we pay you now?"

"Did you like your pizzas boys?" All four raved about the food and how surprised they were that they liked both pies. "Well, in my appreciation, it's on the house tonight. You boys have a great evening."

"Oh, thank you, Mr. Rossini! I'll make sure we come back again soon!" said Josh.

"Tell your mother I said, 'hello', will you?"

"Will do!" said Josh. Then the boys all hugged goodbye before Alex and Josh headed out to Alexis' car to head home for their sleep over.

"There's my mom," announced Isaac, getting up from the table.

"Wait," said Jaden. He reached in his pocket looking for a few small bills.

"What are you doing?" asked Isaac, not understanding why Jaden was going through his pockets.

Jaden whispered. "We should still leave a tip for Karen. I only have big bills and four ones. Do you have any small bills? We should leave like eight dollars or so." Isaac dug into his pockets and found a five-dollar bill. They left the tip and headed out to the car, thanking Mr. Rossini and Karen on the way out.

Erica watched Isaac, followed by Jaden, exit the restaurant and head her way. She watched as Jaden hurried to Isaac's side before he got to the curb and took her son's hand to help steady him until he got to a flat surface. The care and attention Jaden paid to Isaac's needs brought tears to her eyes. At that moment, her trust in Jaden blossomed. She'd been scared to let Isaac go anywhere without her. Erica and her husband Ryan allowed Isaac this adventure because they knew he was growing up and should be allowed the pleasures and freedoms other 13-year-olds have. But what she witnessed made her realize that there are others in the world that care for their son as much as they do.

"How was the movie and pizza?" she asked once the boys were in the car and seat belts fastened. All the way home she was entertained by the lively chatter of two 13-year-olds living their best lives.

----------------------

Jack's parents watched from the pier while Jack and Derek walked along the beach holding hands. "Can 11-year-old boys really know they're gay?" asked Kellen.

"Some gay men know they're gay even younger than our boys. Derek certainly did," offered Francis, "What I'm wondering is if two 11-year-old boys can really be in love." Jack stopped to watch the sunset and Derek stepped behind him. He wrapped his arms around Jack and rested his cheek on the side of Derek's head. They stood quietly, swaying to the rhythm of the waves crashing on the beach.

The Vance family came down to Oceanside early because Jack wanted to see the ocean before visiting his favorite restaurant, the Flying Pig Pub + Kitchen. They suspected he liked the name more than he liked the food. When the boys were called and told it was time for their reservation, they ran to join the adults for the walk down Mission Avenue to the restaurant.

They started with an order of Pickled Devil Eggs and Truffle Fries to share while perusing the menu. For dinner the boys ordered more appetizers to share--Hushpuppies and the Mac n Cheese. Kellen ordered the Shrimp and Grits, and Francis requested the Grilled Duroc Pork Chop.

Derek enjoyed being with Jack's family. All the things Derek loved about Jack he found in abundance in Francis. And the entire family was incredibly loving to each other, and the love extended to Jack's friends and especially now to Derek.

When they returned to East Harbor, they started a game of "Monopoly: Marvel Avengers" edition. It was essentially the original Monopoly game which Kellen and Francis enjoyed. For the boys, instead of collecting properties, you add members to your team of superheroes and battle the children of Thanos. That scored two thumbs-up from Derek and Jack.

Everyone was in a great mood--especially Jack. He was more excitable and animated than ever before. It wasn't the sugar or caffeine he'd consumed; it was the joy and happiness in his heart. He rolled double sixes and counted as he moved his Rocket Racoon game pieces. "YES!" yelled Jack, jumping from his seat. "Take that Ebony Maw!"

In the middle of Jack's victory dance, his Uncle John entered the dining room. "Well, what am I missing here?"

Jack froze as a chill ran down his spine and Derek's smile evaporated. "Hi Uncle John," offered Jack, all joy and fun gone from the boy. Since Kellen and Francis turned their attention to John, he was the only adult in the room that noticed the drastic shift in the boys. He knew who empowered Jack to rebel against his will. He glared at Derek and thought, 'Game on you little fucker. Game on.'

John realized he needed to cover his true intentions and turned on his charm. He offered a hand to his brother and asked, "So, who's winning?"

Kellen shook his hand and admitted, "I don't really know. I think Jack is."

John stepped around Kellen's chair and gave his sister-in-law a hug. "Well, when the game's over, I was hoping you could take these tickets off my hands." He pulled two tickets to the AVO Playhouse's production of "The Music of Woodstock". "They have a ten o'clock show tonight and I thought you two could use a night off. I'll take Jack for our annual birthday sleepover."

The look John gave the boys communicated exactly what just happened. He'd guessed Jack and Derek would try to foil the birthday sleepover and he countered their defensive position. In return, the boys looked flummoxed. They had been blindsided by John's move and now he had the upper hand.

"John! You shouldn't have!" Francis was ecstatic. John knew her well and she'd been wanting to see "The Music of Woodstock" but hadn't gotten around to getting tickets. "But you know, Derek's spending the night tonight and his parents went out of town."

The siblings-in-laws shared a hug giving John the opportunity to look directly into the faces of the boys. "Oh really?" John feigned surprise. "Well, I don't mind watching both boys. Why don't you guys finish your game and then we'll get out of your hair?"

Thinking fast, Derek answered, "Nah. Com'on Jack, let's go get our stuff." He grabbed Jack's wrist and the boys scurried off to Jack's bedroom. They entered the bedroom and shut and locked the door.

"What are we gonna do?" asked Jack. He'd gotten his hopes up so high that he wasn't going to have to do stuff with his Uncle Jack. This change of circumstances was devastating to him.

"Text Sebbie and Sean to see if they can spend the night," ordered Derek. "I'll ask Rodrigo and Mochi. The more of us there are, the less likely he'll try something."

Jack and Derek texted their friends telling them of their failed plan and suggesting additional bodies would deter John's advances. When the text flurry settled, none of the other boys gained permission to spend the night since they'd stayed at Jack's the night before. None of their parents thought the "last-minute emergency sleepover" was all that necessary.

The doorknob to Jack's room rattled as John tried to enter. "Come on boys, it's time to go," said Jack. The tone of the man's voice grated the tweens' nerves.

Derek walked over and hugged Jack. "Don't worry. He's not gonna lay a hand on us tonight. We'll figure something out."

----------------------

"I gotta go to the bathroom," whispered Jaden. Snuggled up with Isaac, he really didn't want to move.

Isaac nodded and leaned forward to allow Jaden to have his right arm back. It wasn't terribly late, but Isaac was wearing out from his big day. The boys decided to crash on the couch and watch the new "Lost in Space". It turned out to give them the perfect excuse to learn more about how their bodies fit together.

"I'll be quick." That drew a smile from Isaac.

Jaden hurried to the bathroom and peed with a sigh of relief. He didn't usually drink that much soda. Between the movie and pizzeria, he'd had a month's worth. He washed his hands and opened the bathroom door to find Elijah, Isaac's big brother, blocking the way. The 15-year-old football player was a bigger, stronger, scarier version of Isaac.

Elijah put his hand on Jaden's chest and pushed him back in the bathroom and shut the door behind them.

"What do you want from my little brother?" Elijah tried to sound as menacing as possible, but he wasn't very good at it.

"What do you mean?" asked Jaden, wondering what he'd done. "He's like the most awesome dude I know."

"You better not take advantage of him," said Elijah, his emotions betraying him.

"I won't!"

"You better not hurt him!" Elijah was more upset than angry.

"Dude, I care about your little brother as much as you do," Jaden explained. He thought quickly and made Elijah an offer. "Look, we both have the same intentions -- to keep Isaac safe and make him as happy as possible. Why don't we work together to do that?"

"You know he's got a brain tumor, don't you?"

Jaden nodded that he knew.

"You know how bad that is, right? That it could get bad at any time and he could...he could..." Elijah couldn't say it. He'd never been able to say it. He fought the tears.

Isaac hadn't told Jaden that part. Then again, he hadn't really thought about what would happen to Isaac if things got bad. He really just thought of Isaac as he is right now. Thinking about Isaac dying wrenched Jaden's heart too. He stepped up and gave Elijah a hug. The high schooler hugged Jaden back.

They broke the hug and stepped back from each other. "You know," said Elijah, "Amelia will want to be in on this too."

"That's fine, but this is no conspiracy or anything. We aren't keeping a secret from Isaac. It's just we're all a team...Team Isaac." Jaden looked at Elijah and asked, "Are we cool?"

Elijah nodded giving permission for Jaden to return to his beau.

When Jaden returned to the family room, Isaac was curled up in his "snuggly". It was kinda like a two-person sleeping bag, but it was made of a grey, shaggy fleece material inside and out. The blush, fur-like material was soothing to Isaac when his head hurt and was mega-warm when he was cold. In the light of the TV, Jaden approached to see Isaac had fallen to sleep. Looking around, he noticed Isaac's shorts and t-shirt on the floor next to the couch. Jaden took off his shirt then looked around to make sure no one was coming. Determining it was safe, Jaden dropped his shorts and crawled up on the couch.

"Jaden?" asked Isaac waking up.

"Shhhhhh...Do you mind if in get in there with you?"

Isaac's pulse raced. He'd often fantasized about being in his "snuggly" naked with a boy--particularly with Jaden. Scooting over to make room, Isaac's eyes feasted on Jaden's body, nearly as naked as when he's in his racing Speedo and a lot closer. Jaden wiggled his way into the snuggly until he was face-to-face with Isaac.

Jaden reached over and placed his hand on Isaac's bare chest. Isaac's heart drummed against the palm of his hand. "Your heart's beating really fast. Are you alright?"

"Never better," smiled Isaac.

Relieved that Isaac wasn't going to die, he dragged his hand across Isaac's body, his fingers strumming across the boy's erect nipple. The friction across his sensitive nub caused Isaac to gasp. That's when Jaden caught on that Isaac's current condition was a state of arousal, not medical. He smiled at Isaac and grabbed him by the hips. With a gentle tug their pelvises smashed together.

A shiver ran through Isaac's body. His eyes closed, he moaned from deep within his thin frame. He didn't see Jaden leaning in for a kiss. Making out was new for Isaac, but he had a great teacher. It wasn't long before they were tongue battling like champions.

Isaac held onto Jaden as they kissed, unaware of what Jaden was doing. Knowing that Isaac would be shy and reserved, Jaden slipped out of his boxer briefs then directed Isaac's hand to his bare cock.

"Jaden!" said Isaac, surprised by Jaden's nakedness. They were, after all, in the family room and anyone could walk in at any moment.

Jaden smiled, "You don't like it?"

Isaac gave Jaden a playful shove and the swimmer grabbed the waistband of Isaac's and yanked them down to mid-thigh. Jaden watched the look of surprise on Isaac's face. When Isaac reached for his boxers, the question on Jaden's mind was would Isaac pull his underwear up or take them off.

When Isaac was finished, he looked at Jaden and smiled. Each boy reached out and took his partner's boner in his hand. They closed their eyes and resumed kissing. The caress of hands and the material of the snuggly made the boys feel pleasure from nearly every nerve ending on their bodies.

Amelia entered the dark family room and sat in the armchair by the door. The battle scene with the robots was loud covering the other sounds in the room. When the scene cut to the Robinson family in their Jupiter spacecraft, the TV brightened the room revealing Isaac and Jaden's activity. At first, Amelia was embarrassed and started to leave, but curiosity got the best of her. She slipped behind the armchair where she could watch and listen.

Jaden adjusted the pillows then flipped onto his back and pulled Isaac on top. Isaac straddled Jaden's waist and propped himself up on his extended arms. He looked down at Jaden whose body rested at an incline on the pillows. Jaden adjusted his body below Isaac, raising his knees to support Isaac's body.

Thrusting his hips a few times, Jaden instructs, "Rub them together like this."

"But I'll cum!" admitted Isaac with concern. Amelia's eyes widened with the confirmation the boys were being naughty sexy with each other.

Jaden gave Isaac a crooked smile and said, "That's the point." He pulled Isaac back into a kiss.

Isaac's instincts kicked in. He frotted Jaden. Any intention of stopping prematurely were escorted from his consciousness. The snuggly tickled his legs and toes as he straddled Jaden's naked body. The shaggy fleece material slid up and down his back as his body undulated. Not far into puberty, Isaac's three and a half inches ground deliciously against Jaden's larger member. In addition to being larger, Jaden also had more pubes and they tickled Isaac when his dragged his pickle through them.

The boys kissed and made sounds of pleasure while Jaden's hands explored Isaac's body. Their passion escalated as did the volume of their moans and groans. Jaden knew he was getting close, but he wanted Isaac to cum first. He hooked an arm around Isaac's neck so the boy couldn't pull away then slid his other hand through the sweat forming on Isaac's back. Reaching the tailbone, Jaden slipped his fingers down between the boy's spread glutes.

Isaac managed to cry out, "Oh, god!" before Jaden slipped his tongue back into the boy's mouth. The rhythm of their thrusting and grinding drove them both to a climax when Jaden's fingers hit their target. Rubbing circles around and over Isaac's boy hole, the smaller boy tensed and screamed into his lover's mouth.

Amelia, hearing her brother reach his climax, reached into her robe and found the crotch of her panties soaking wet. The contact of her hand to her mons sent unimaginable desire through her body. Her fingers were on autopilot while she kept her focus on what Isaac and Jaden were doing. With a mind of their own, her fingers slipped under the pink, elastic band of her panties.

When the first squirts of Isaac's watery offering sprinkled Jaden's abs, he added his own seed. Words uttered during their orgasms were muffled by the other's mouth. It didn't matter. Their ecstasy was evident, particularly to Isaac's sister. Amelia buried her face in the arm of her fluffy bathrobe while she vigorously brought herself to her own orgasm. The soundtrack of the show crescendoed just in time to mask her moaning and groaning as her body shook through its own pleasure.

Catching their breath, both Isaac and Jaden began laughing. Elijah heard the boys and decided to see what was going on. As he approached the door to the family room, he spotted Amelia on the floor with her hand through the leg hole of her panties. He froze and watched while she pulled the crotch to the side unintentionally giving her big brother a wide-open view of her glistening, puffy lips.

Amelia heard Elijah's gasp and saw her big brother hurry back to his bedroom, shocked by what he saw. Amelia was mortified that Elijah caught her playing with herself. She snuck out of the family room and ran to her own bedroom.

Completely unaware of what was happening across the room, Jaden relaxed his legs. Isaac rose to move off Jaden but Jaden wouldn't allow it. "Please, just stay there. I love the way you feel on top of me like this." Isaac was only too happy to remain in Jaden's arms. They relaxed and in no time, Isaac fell to sleep with his forehead tucked into the side of Jaden's neck.

Careful not to disturb Isaac, Jaden reached for his phone and took a selfie showing the two lovers snuggled together. Opening Message, Jaden sent the image to his cousin Grant with the note, "I think I'm in love."

----------------------

John Vance opened the door to his apartment and directed the boys to enter. Jack hurried to his bedroom and Derek followed. Entering his bedroom, Jack flipped on the lights and gave a squeal causing the other three boys to jump.

"Shit!" yelled Alex, scrambling off Josh. Alexis said she would give them their privacy, so they didn't expect anyone to walk in on them. Luckily, they hadn't started shedding their clothing.

"Who are you?" asked Jack.

"Who am I?" questioned Alex. "Who are..." Then it occurred to him. "Wait. You must be John's nephew."

Jack nodded as Derek stood next to him. Under the circumstances, Derek was leery of anyone that had anything to do with John Vance. "Who are you?" asked Derek in an accusatory manner.

"This is my boyfriend Josh and I'm Alex. I live here."

Across the apartment...

"Oh my god!" said Alexis coming out of the master bathroom.

John jumped too, not expecting anyone to be home. "Shit Alexis, what are you doing home on a Saturday evening?"

"I'm only working a four-hour shift tonight," she explained, putting her earrings in. "I'll take Josh and Alex with me, so they won't bother you."

John grunted and walked to the kitchen and poured himself a drink. His mind was racing as he tried to figure out what to do. He'd never tried anything with Alex, so he and his friend don't know anything, but Alex always seemed leery. 'Damn,' he thought, 'the longer Derek and Jack are with them, the more of an opportunity they have to tell.' Downing the whiskey, he set the glass on the counter and went to split the boys up.

"Boys," called Alexis rushing from the bedroom, "it's time to go!"

All four boys scrambled into the living room.

"OH!" said Alexis in surprise. "John?"

"Alexis, this is my nephew Jack and his friend Derek."

"Boyfriend," corrected Derek.

"It's Jack's birthday and he always comes for a birthday sleepover."

"Well, happy birthday Jack," said Alexis.

"Mom," said Alex, calling his mom and pulling her into his bedroom. "I forgot to give you this back." He pulled the money he didn't spend on his date with Josh and gave it to his mother. "Thank you for a wonderful day. Josh and I are gonna stay here with Jack and Derek. Have a good night at work."

"But what about..."

"If we go with you, we'll be protected from John, but not those two. He'd be stupid to do something with all four of us here. We'll be fine."

Alexis gave Alex a hug and kissed the crown of his head. "If there are any problems, anything, you know what to do." Alex nodded and they broke their hug.

Alexis walked back to John. "John, if it's alright with you, Josh and Alex want to stay and hang out with Jack and Derek. Do you mind?"

"Yeah," added Alex, "we want to help celebrate Jack's birthday!"

"Yeah," agreed Josh. He stepped over and put his arm around Jack's shoulders.

Jack and Derek stood quietly taking it all in. They thought it was odd that Alex asked if they were scared of John. After admitting they were, they had no idea what the older boys had planned. When Alexis called the boys, Alex only said, "Just follow my lead."

John couldn't think of a way to say "no" without sparking suspicion and Alexis needed an answer. "Sure. Why not? It will be fun to have four boys." If Alexis had turned, she might have caught John's lecherous look.

When Alexis left for the Café, John headed to his bedroom and the boys huddled in Jack's/Alex's bedroom.

"What's wrong, Jack?" asked Alex, concerned by the look of fear in the boy's eyes.

Derek wrapped his arms around Jack and tried to sooth his boyfriend. "It's okay Jack. They've got our backs."

"Look," stated Alex looking Jack in the face, "I think your uncle John is a perv. Every night I push that dresser in front of the bedroom door 'cause I don't trust him. Is that why you're scared?"

Jack nodded his head while Derek answered for the both of them. "Yeah," Derek whispered, "he's been doing stuff to Jack for a long time and Jack doesn't want it to happen. He even tried to touch me but I told him I'd kick him in the nuts. Tonight we tried to stop John from bringing Jack here, but our plan didn't work."

"Well, we're kinda in the same boat," explained Alex. "We weren't supposed to be here without my mom. But we weren't going to leave you here by yourselves." He rubbed Jack's shoulder to reassure him that they were in this together.

They discussed plans to get out of the apartment, but most of their ideas fell short. If they called Josh's mom, Alex and Josh could spend the night at the Evan's residence, but that would leave Jack and Derek alone. Jack and Derek could call some of the of the posse for rescue, but that would leave Josh and Alex out.

"I know who to call," said Alex. He picked up his phone and tapped the screen a few times. The phone rang a few times and he thought it was going to go to voicemail when it was answered. The sound of music blared through the phone so loud Alex had to move the phone away from his ear. The sound faded as Michael left the recording studio and headed up the stairs to the loft.

"Hey Alex! What's up?"

"Hey Michael, we need your help. Can we have a sleepover tonight?"

"Who's we?" asked Michael.

"Me, Josh Evans, Derek... Derek, what's your last name? Derek McCall and Jack Vance."

Surprised, Michael asked, "You know Derek?"

"Yeah, well, kinda." Alex didn't want to get into the long story, he needed an answer.

Derek reached out and Alex handed him the phone. "Michael?"

"Hey Derek! How do you know Alex?"

"Michael, we're in danger. Your dad needs to come get us. Like now!"

The next thing Michael heard was an adult voice growl, "Gimme that!" Then the phone went dead. Michael looked at his phone in horror and ran back to the studio.

"Your phones," ordered John. He presented his open palm on which he expected three more phones. "NOW!"

The boys were in shock and stared in disbelief. John stood there in a leather harness and tight-fitting assless chaps. The thick, silver cock ring was the most foreign piece of apparel John wore drawing the curiosity of all four boys.

John thought they were admiring his cock. "Don't worry, I'll make sure each of you get a piece of that tonight. Now give me your damn phones."

The boys placed their phones in the man's hand and returned to their previous positions. Josh couldn't take his eyes off the crazy figure before him. John couldn't have looked stranger to Josh if he were a little, green alien. Alex's eyes danced around the bedroom looking for something, a weapon of some kind. He knew he kept Jack's baseball bat under his bed, but if he couldn't get to it, he'd need something else. Derek and Jack stood hand-in-hand, frozen in place.

John turned the phones off and turned to Jack and Derek. "Well Jack, I brought your birthday present." He held up a new, black studded dog collar with a dog tag that spelled out "Cock Slut". "But for tonight, we'll let your boyfriend wear the new collar." He placed the collar around Derek's neck and fastened it with a small padlock. "I think your old collar is more appropriate for you tonight." He placed the worn pink collar around Jack's neck and locked it in place. He flicked the dog tag and read it out loud. "Pussy Boy. That's you baby boy."

Jack burned with shame and guilt. It had always confused him how his body would betray him. He hated his uncle's antics and he hated how his uncle humiliated him, yet, every time John placed a collar around his neck, he would bone up.

"Now strip. Both of you." The volume and anger in John's voice caused both Jack and Derek to jump. Jack went to release Derek's hand to disrobe but Derek wouldn't let it go.

"You aren't fooling anyone. You both are boned up thinking about taking my cock up your ass."

Alex laughed.

John was furious. Looking at the older boys, he spat, "Don't think you two aren't going to get your share of cock tonight."

"Oh yeah?" questioned Alex. "Fuck you!"

Josh looked on in horror when John bent down and got right in Alex's face. Josh thought for sure the man was going to kill Alex.

"The only reason you and your skanky-ass whore of a 'mom' are living here is because I planned on getting me some of that tight, Mexican ass of yours. You've managed to keep away from me until now. Tonight, I'm gonna pop that cherry ass of yours."

Little did John know that Josh was the only virgin ass in the group. John thinking he was a virgin caused Alex to laugh again.

That was one insult too many for John. "Why you little faggot!" John raised his hand to strike Alex but was interrupted.

"NO!" screamed Jack, leaping on his uncle's back. He wrapped his left arm around John's neck and beat on the man's shoulder with his other fist.

"Get off me, Jack!" commanded John, standing and trying to shake Jack off his back. Jack wrapped his legs around his uncle's waist and bit him on the shoulder.

"Ouch! Fuck!" John reached over his shoulder and grabbed Jack by the hair.

"Owwwww!" squealed Jack.

John's distraction allowed Alex to slide off the bed and grab the baseball bat.

*pop*

On his knees, Alex had spun and drove the bat into John's left knee. The man screamed in pain as his knee snapped. Avoiding a second swing he knew would be coming, John turned and dropped to the floor causing Jack to fall to the side. Jack rolled away from John and Derek backed up against the wall just out of the man's reach. When John went to stand, Alex swung for the man's head.

*crack*

The sound of the bat splitting John's scalp and cracking his skull was sickening. Alex thought that would be the end of it, but John, bloody and enraged, spun on his good knee and lunged for Alex. With another swing, Alex caught the man on the side of his face, knocking him over and nearly unconscious.

Alex pointed to Jack. "Do you know where John keeps the duct tape?" Jack nodded and ran to the utility drawer in the kitchen.

"Did anyone see where the phones landed?" asked Alex.

Josh pointed to the phones under John's body where the man writhed in pain. Derek helped Alex move the man's body enough to grab their phones.

"You know Michael, do you have his dad's phone number?" Derek nodded that he did. Jack entered with a roll of black duct tape and handed it to Alex.

Alex gave instructions. "Call Dr. Meijer and tell him we need help. Jack, grab his feet."

Jack grabbed John's feet and Alex wrapped the man's ankles with duct tape. John started to come to, but not before Jack crossed the man's wrists and Alex used the rest of the duct tape to disable their aggressor.

Satisfied that they were finally safe. Alex dropped to his butt and sighed in relief. He looked around at the blood spatter on the walls, carpet, Derek, Jack and himself.

Derek dropped to his knees in front of Alex and Jack sat cross-legged by his side. Josh slid to the floor beside Alex and hugged his boyfriend.

"Dr. Meijer is on his way. He said to call 9-1-1." Derek handed Alex his phone and the teen turned it on and called the police.

After the call to Michael, the Meijer boys had rushed home and alerted their father that their friends were in trouble. When Derek called Lars for help, they were all piling into the SUV to go looking for the boys. Only a few minutes later, Lars pulled into the apartment complex to find the police had already arrived.

"Stay here," ordered Lars before hopping out and rushing to find an officer to speak too. Before his door shut, the other three doors opened and Matthew, Simon, Lukas, Michael and Christian followed.

Both the East Harbor and Vista police responded to the call. One of the Vista officers was facing the apartment building and didn't notice the boys in earshot when Lars approached. "Sorry sir. This is a police matter."

"I know. I'm the therapist of the boy who lives here and I'm a consultant for the East Harbor PD."

Lars saw Officer Bradley wave for him. He pointed that out to the Vista officer then stepped under the crime scene tape and hurried over.

"Where do you think you're going?" asked the Vista officer when the boys started to follow.

"With our dad. Our friends are in there," answered Michael.

The officer understood the look of concern on the boys' faces. "Look. I understand you're worried about your friends. They are okay. But the worst thing that can happen now is too many people go in and mess up the crime scene. That could give the defense wiggle room to get that man off and back on the streets. We all want this conviction, right? You need to stay here to make sure we get that."

The boys nodded and impatiently waited for their friends. Shortly, a stretcher was carried down the stairs from the second-floor apartment. The face of the adult was covered in bloody bandages.

"What happened to him?" wondered Matthew.

"Is he dead?" asked Simon.

"No," explained Michael automatically. "If he was dead, they'd have the sheet over his head. But he's definitely not in good shape."

"Do you think someone broke in and tried to rob them?" asked Lukas.

The boys tired of waiting and retreated back the SUV. From where they waited, the emergency vehicles blocked their view. They didn't see the boys being brought out of the apartment and being checked by medics. They didn't see parents arriving, frantic from the call they received from the police. Eventually, the vehicles left and only a couple cop cars remained. That's when Michael saw Alex, Lars and Alexis walk up to the SUV. He hopped out ran around to the driver's side see Alex and stopped short of giving him a hug. "Dude, you look like shit." That broke the tension, and everyone got a laugh out of it.

"Before we get home, Alexis and Alex need a new place to stay. They won't be able to do more than come back for their things since this is Mr. Vance's apartment and after what's gone down here tonight..." Lars didn't finish. Alex had been through enough tonight and didn't need to be bombarded with more questions.

Lukas started to ask one of his many questions but Lars was quick to cut him off. "We'll talk about that tomorrow." Lars turned to Alexis and added, "I think you and Alex should stay with us tonight. Tomorrow we'll help you find a place of your own."

Alex was flooded with guilt having ruined the only living situation he and his mother had available to them. He blurted out, "But we can't afford it."

"What he means, Dr. Meijer, is I've been saving up so we could afford to get our own apartment and leave John. I just haven't saved enough for the apartment and utility deposits."

Michael gave Alex's mom a hug. "Don't worry, we got you covered."

Alexis took this the wrong way and her pride was hurt. "No, I can't take any money from you."

"I'm sorry. That's not what I meant," explained Michael. "What I meant to say is I think I know a place you can afford until you get a bigger place."
