The white SUV carrying Cody, his family, and that of Nika and Sequoia's family made it to the hospital and parked in the temporary parking in the front. By now Cody had woken but was in a daze as if he was half asleep. All four doors had flown open and everyone spilled out except Sasha who was still curled up in a ball on the seat sucking on his thumb. Mr. Sommers gently scooped him up, pj's and all and carried him to the hospitals entrance. As the worried mob made their way to the desk they heard a voice shout out, “Jordan. Marsha!”

They turned around to be greeted by Nadia, Nika's mom, who was still sitting in the waiting room with her husband and Golden Fawn. Immediately Tasha ran to her father breaking down and hugging onto him as hard as she could. He closed his arms around her and comforted her as best as he could. At the same time, Nadia ran to Jordan who was holding Sasha in his arms and she took the boy from him and held him close, gently rocking him back and forth and kissing his cheek. It was classic family that hasn't changed for centuries. The mother and young son clinging to one another and the daughter running to the warm, strong, comforting arms of her father.

Nadia: “Thank you so much for picking up the kids and coming down guys.”

Jordan: “It's the least we can do under the circumstances Nadia.”

Marsha: Is there any news as to the boys conditions Niklas?”

That seemed to be a lightning rod as everyone grew tense at the anticipation of the anwser.

Niklas: “Everyone might want to sit down for this.”

Both family's returned to the couches and chairs in the waiting room and Niklas spoke, “I wish I had better news everyone, but here it is. Sequoia is no longer with us. He was killed at the scene with a fractured skull and numerous fractures to his neck and spine.”

There was a sense of loss in that air that was most foul. It reeked. Everyone began to break down as even Jordan and Marsha began to sob. Cody just looked on as if watching a movie on a blank screen. And as for Sasha, he may as well have been under anesthesia, because he was in another world. Then as the tension mounted, Tasha said to her father, “What about Nika dad? Where is he, and is he alive?”

Yes hon, for the moment he is alive. And he needs our thoughts and prayers right now sweetheart.”

Jordan: How bad is it Niklas?”

He's undergoing brain surgery as we speak. He has a fractured skull and they need to cut into it to relieve the pressure.”

He's a strong boy Niklas and he has a strong will. Any idea on how long it will be.”

He only went in an hour ago if that, so it may be a long morning. So everyone better get comfortable and hope for the best.”

Just then Dr. Semoni walked up to the group and said, “How are you guys holding up” to Niklas and Nadia.

Nadia: “As well as can be expected under the circumstances. Any word on Nikita Dr?”

No mam, it may be hours before we know anything. Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable?”

Actually there is Dr., this is my youngest son Sasha that I'm holding. My daughter Abby here said he's been vomiting since this morning and seems to be in some kind of emotionally induced trauma of some sort. Is there any way you can look at him and get him a room?”

Yes of course. We may need to get him on an IV to replace the fluids he's lost. Were, um, I mean, are he and Nikita close?”

Tasha: Like Siamese twins Dr., and by the way, he's wet himself a few times as well.”

Then he's probably in shock, and we need to get him into a room and sedated. What about this one, he doesn't look to good either,” pointing to Cody.

Marsha: This is our son Cody, and he and Nika have been best friends most of their lives. He's been pretty much in the same condition as Sasha all morning.”

I think we'll need a room for two then. Would you mind if we take a look at him and get him into bed mam?”

No, please see to it that he's safe and comfortable Dr.”

Dr. Semoni walked away and had a nurse come back out with a stretcher for Sasha and a wheel chair for Cody. They were immediately whisked off and into an elevator to be taken to a room to be examined, sedated, and put to bed. The nurse asked the two sets of parents to come with her as there was the matter of paperwork to be taken care of. Nadia said to Niklas, “why don't you let me and Marsha take care of that Nik, and you and Jordan can stay here with Abby, Tasha, and Trish.

Meanwhile, from the time they reached the hospital, Cheyenne walked right up to her mother Golden Fawn, sat on the seat beside her and held her hand. Sensing the moment was right, Golden Fawn said, “excuse us a few minutes guys. Were going to take a walk in the garden so I can talk with Cheyenne.”

Meanwhile, everyone knew what was in store for little Cheyenne who was looked out for by Sequoia most of her young life while their mom worked. So they knew it would be an emotional walk that she faced.”

Meanwhile Niklas touched Jordan on the shoulder and said, “can we speak privately a minute Jordan?”

Jordan nodded his head and said, “Abby, would you please keep Tasha company and keep an eye on Trisha? We'll be back in a few minutes.”

Sure dad.”

I guess there's more to the story Niklas?”

I'm afraid so old friend. Nikita only has a 25% or so chance of surviving the surgery Jordy. And if he is lucky enough to survive, he may be in a vegetative state, or have severe brain damage. Nadia and I are of course hoping for the best, but we have to also face the truth.”

I'm soo sorry Nik. What can I do to help?”

Well, if we have to spend extended time at the hospital with Nika, can Abby and Sasha stay with you and your family? I think it would be unhealthy for them to stay in our big old house by themselves.”

Of course they can. And I think it would be healthy for Sasha to be around Cody and vice versa.”

I was thinking the same thing. Just as Tasha and Abby are best friends and Tasha will need Abby if things go south regarding Nika.”

What about Golden Fawn and Cheyenne?”

I've talked it over with Nadia, and we're moving them into the main house after all this is over. They are after all a big part of our family and we all feel that way. Plus they have suffered a tremendous loss. It's something we should have done a long time ago, but she's so proud and want's to pay her own way. But this time we won't take no for an answer.”

Good thinking Niklas. They all have tremendous hearts, and I personally will truly miss Sequoia. He may have had the kindest heart I've ever seen.”

Very true Jordan, very true indeed.”

So it's a done deal then?”

Yes, Nadia's going to have a talk with Golden Fawn after she and Marsha finish the paperwork, and as Nadia and I take turns running back and forth to and from the hospital, the other will be helping them get moved in and transitioned. Plus with Sasha and Tash over at your place, we'll be able to keep each other company. And I'll tell you another thing. The days of Golden Fawn working her fingers to the bone, are over! Weather she likes it or not.”

The men returned to the waiting room only to discover everyone was gone. Then a nurse walked up and explained to them that Dr. Hart and Dr. Semoni had arranged a separate gathering room for them to wait in that allowed them some privacy from the main waiting room. They arrived at the new room to find the girls curled up on the couches with blankets over them, and Trisha being spooned by her loving older sister Abby with her arms wrapped around her. Cheyenne and her mom followed along a short time later with Cheyenne looking as if she took the news quite a bit better than expected. Just the same, Tasha walked up to her, picked her up, and said, “I'm very sorry about Sequoia, Cheyenne. We all love him very much.”

At which Cheyenne replied, “Don't be sorry Tasha, Sequoia knows how to take care of himself. Sequoia knows everything. He's just fine. My big brother can do anything. Just wait, you'll see!”

Tasha gave her an odd smile before putting her down and sitting back down herself. It was at least an hour before the mothers got back from completing the paperwork as you could see they were both still trying to insert insurance cards and id's in the wallets as they were walking back into the room.

Everyone was napping when they walked back into the room and they remained quiet as to let everyone rest. It was late morning by now and Nika had been in surgery for several hours. A few minutes later cell phones began to go off. First Abby's, then Tasha's, and then the parents. Apparently news had spread when the authorities released that name of the fatality victim to the news media, since the mother (Golden Fawn)had been notified. Now all the families in Clear Lake that knew Sequoia and his family were anxious and worried to find out the identity of the other boy. The one undergoing emergency surgery on his skull, exceeding three hours now.

Tasha: “Hello, this is Tash. Hello Blake, I'm at Childrens hospital in Reno. I don't want to say anything. It's probably better you have Ben and Sara call my mom and dad. Ok, thanks.”

Nadia: Was that Blake Tash?”

Yes, I told him to have his mom and dad call you or dad. Is that ok mom?”

That's fine sweetheart. I think it'd be best if you and Abby turn your cell phones off now girls. We'll answer the calls as they come in.”

Marsha: “Good idea Nadia, turn your phone off Abby.”

Yes mom.”

That seemed to be the routine the rest of the morning and into afternoon. The parents used the caller ID on the phones to selectively talk to whom they felt they needed to, and the nurses and Dr. Semoni continued to bring them word from the Operating Room that there was no word yet. But they did inform them that Sasha had received several IV's and was responding well to the drugs they gave him. Cody was also feeling a little better and the two boys were now talking to one another from their beds in the room they shared, holding hands, and crying. At one point, Cody stood up, walked over to Sasha, picked him up, and carried him over to lay him down on his own bed. Then he laid beside him and spooned up and wrapped his arms around him, just as Nika would have done. The mothers decided to pay them a visit, as Dr. Semoni cautioned them on what not to tell them till Dr. Hudson gave them the lowdown on what was to become of Nika. Blakes parents were able to get in touch with Niklas and Nadia and they said it was all over the local news. That Sequoia's name was released and that the other boy was in emergency surgery. They were on their way down with the twins and Blake. Who of course against his parents wishes, immediately informed the rest of the posse (or ten pac....minus one now). So many anxious kids and their parents were now descending upon Children's hospital like a plague of locust. And as Dr. Semoni once more entered the private room to advise the parents, and much to there dislike, so was the News Media. Staked outside at every exit.

Meanwhile Cody and Sasha had been talking and crying for about an hour now. Both had been changed into hospital skirts that were the only thin material hiding their naked bodies from the others in the hospital. They began to talk between them of dreams that they had during the night and all through the morning. Both at home, on the way to the hospital, and at the hospital itself. And that they had talked to Cody and Sequoia in those dreams and that they were being asked to do something. It was foggy and they were still under the influence of the drugs. But the dreams seemed so realistic, and that it was eerie how their dreams seemed to be so closely related to one another. They knew it was more than coincidence and they needed to talk more and try to figure out what those dreams meant. Sasha kept seeing a leather neck chain in his dream, and Cody kept hearing, “we two as one” in his head. Then, as they had peaked each others interest, the two mothers came in to check on their boys. They both became very emotionally when they entered the room. Both mothers ran to embrace their two boys. There was a long, tear filled hug before the separated themselves. They asked their children if they were hungry and if they would like anything to eat. Both shook their head no, that they did not. Then they asked if there was anything else and the boys both said yes, that they wanted to know what was going on.

Being more emotionally stable, and with less of a burden to bare, Marsha told Nadia that she'll take it from there. She then explained to both of them the basic facts of what had transpired while they were in their sleep.

Cody, Sasha, Sequoia was killed early this morning, and nothing can change that now. It's just what it is. Before you two get emotional on me again, you have to understand that your brother Nika is still alive Sasha. Do you hear me Cody, your best friend is still alive!”

Both boys nodded as they sobbed. “Now, I'm not going to lie to you. He's been in emergency surgery for over four hours now, and it can go either way. But he is alive. Now both of you have to look at that as a positive, and cling to that. He needs all our support right now, and bad thoughts aren't going to help him. So we'll all mourn for Sequoia later, but for now we have to back Nika and support him all we can. Do you both understand?”

Both boys nodded their heads as they clung to one another with Sasha nestled in Cody's lap, with Cody's arms wrapped around the boy.

Nadia and Marsha both gave their little troopers a kiss and asked if they needed anything. Sasha replied, “yes, I'd like it if me and Cody could take a walk in a little while?”

Nadia: That's fine Sasha. Cody, you'll have to remember Sasha is very week and still receiving fluids, so you'll have to push the IV tower and wheel it beside him. And don't you boys go to far, ok?”

Yes mam. Thank you.”

As Nadia and Marsha walked back to the private room, Nadia asked Marsha, “Should we have told them about how Nika's going to be mentally challenged even if he does make it out of the operation?”

I don't think so Nadia. I mean, baby steps. Let them deal with one thing at a time. I mean, why give them that emotional spark of something to hang on to and then immediately take it away or take it back. Let them have a piece of hope to hang onto for now. Because I don't think this thing is over and I'm praying for the best.”

Yes, I can see that too.”

As they walked past the hospital entrance and towards their private room, they heard their names called out as Ben and Sara and their three boys (Blake and the twins) came walking briskly towards them.

Ben: “Nadia, Marsha, What's going on, any new developments? Any good news?”

They exchanged hugs and greeted the family of five including Blake and the twins. And led them back to their private room. There, the two families spoke, exchanging the usually pleasantries and Niklas updated them on Nika.

Meanwhile Cody helped Sasha up and led him out to the hall in their hospital gowns while Cody pushed Sash's IV tower along the path towards the garden. The boys held hands and stopped every so often to embrace one another. Blake and the twins went for a walk as well, still unable to comprehend what had occurred so quickly since last seeing their friends. And what the fuck was Nika doing up so early in the morning chasing Sequoia? To them, at their age, it all seemed unreal. Unnatural, and not sure weather to cry, be angry, or just what to do. About that time, Jace and his parents showed up as well. Jace left the room to go for a walk and find his friends. He ran into Sasha and Cody walking through the garden and quickly approached them both and gave them both a big hug.

Jace: “He guys, how are you feeling?”

Cody: “Ok I guess Jace....considering.”

Jace: “Well, everyone's coming down as soon as they can to be with you and your families.”

Sasha, sounding a little perked up by that: “Is Tanner here yet?”

Cody: “Haha, I haven't seen any security guards running around, or altercations yet, so I doubt it Sash.”

Jace: “No Sash, just me, Blake, and the twins so far.”

Sasha: “Common Cody, Tanner's not that bad.”

Cody: “I didn't say he was Sash. Just high strung maybe. I was surprised he didn't cause any trouble at the BBQ?”

Sasha: “He went home sick remember. That's why Sequoia spent the night instead.”

Cody: “I was wondering what happened to him.”

Jace: “Well, let's keep walking.”

Sasha: “I gotta piss like a fuckin river guys!”

Meanwhile back at the room, Dr. Hart came into the parents room full of Nika and Sequoia's friends, and their parents and said to Nadia and Niklas that they needed to talk. And would they like to talk in private. Both parents woke up Tasha and Abagail and looked at each other and all their friends,. Then said “No, were all in this together” as everyone held hands and knelt down beside one another and bowed their head. Niklas said, “Go ahead Dr. We're ready, what's the verdict?

Dr. Hart said, “ Dr. Hudson is still mopping up, but after several instances where Nikita lost his pulse, and we began to lose him, somehow he was able to hang on. It was as if someone or something very powerful was willing him through it. Nika is not out of the woods by any means, but he survived the five plus hour surgery better than we had hoped for.”

With that said, the whole room went into an emotional outburst and it was a jubilee. Niklas hugged everyone and Nadia broke down and cried again. They noise and excitement woke up Trisha and Cheyenne. And Golden Fawn may have been the most relieved of all, knowing it was only because Nika went to save Sequoia that he was hurt.

Back to the garden, Sasha had to piss extremely bad. The three boys walked up to the desk and Jace asked the nurse where Sasha could relieve himself. The nurse pointed to some doors across the hall and said there was a bathroom in each of the Hospital patient rooms, as the public restroom was a bit further and she didn't want the struggling preteen to have to wait. She asked if he would like her to come along to help? But Sash said, while blushing and looking away, a little red in the face, that he had his friends with him and that it was ok. The boys walked Sash over as he opened one of the doors and walked in to do his business.

After several minutes Blake, Travis, and Wesley who were also unaware of Nika's new progress ran up to the two boys (Cody and Jace) having spotted them across the hospital corridor. They all exchange hugs and talked about the loss of Sequoia and the hope and prayers they have for their friend Nika.

They spoke for three or four minutes and then Cody said, “there's something wrong you guys.”

Blake said, “Yah, I'll say Cody.”

No, not the accident Blake.”

What is it Cody?”

Sasha, he been in their for five or ten minutes. He just went in to pee. Somethings wrong I tell you.”

Blake: “Ok, if there is, we'll fix that right now Cody. Ain't nothing bad happening to Sasha, not today. Not if I can help it!”

Blake grasped the door handle and pulled open the door with tremendous force, and out flew Sasha who had just grabbed the handle on the inside of the room, as Blake had ripped the door open. Sasha flew forward with his IV tower in tow, and was caught by Trav and Wes before he could fall. At the same time, Jace lunged forward and grabbed Sash's IV tower before it spun away on its wheels and ripped the IV out of Sasha's arm.

Sasha was ghost white and shaking as if he'd seen an apparition. Blake took hold of his arms on either side of him holding him up in front of him and said. “Im sorry Sasha, I didn't mean to scare you, we were worried about you is all. Are you ok?”

Sasha just shook and stared at Blake. Cody said, “Oh no, did he go into shock again?”

Blake said, “I don't know, lets get him back to your room.”

As they started to drag Sasha away, he said “NO”! And stayed where he was, still ghost white and shaking.”

Cody: “What is it Sasha, what's wrong, are you alright?”

Sasha Just looked up at them and pointed to the door and said, “Sequoia!”

Blake looked down at the younger boy and shook his head before saying, “That's not funny Sash, Sequoia's dead.”

Cody replied, “Look at him Blake, he's not trying to be funny, he's terrified.”

Blake with his hands clinched and his face turning red said, “we'll see about that!” and he opened the door as they all made there way through the door and into the room.

They walked into the room and there was a bed on the right side of the room that was empty. On the left side there was another bed but with curtains surrounding it blocking everyone's view, along with the door to the bathroom. All six boys slowly approached the curtains as Blake reached up with hands shaking and threw open the drapes.

All six boys stood there with their mouths wide open as if they were watching a horror movie. Sasha was no longer the only boy turned white. They all looked down, as Blake said, “No, it can't be. It's impossible!”

Sasha looked up at the rest and said, “See, I told you so.”

Blake said, “No, its not. This boys alive, and he's only seven or eight years old.”

Jace: “Maybe so Blake, but Sash and I are Sequoia's age and in his grade. We went to school with him every day for years, and I'm telling you right now, he may be only seven or eight, but he's Sequoia at seven or eight.”

Just then all six boys jumped out of their skin as a very loud and deep voice bellowed out, “What are you boys doing in here?”

All six jumped a foot off the ground and let out a scream as they turned around and saw a heavy set African American Nurse looking at them from the door. She saw Sasha and Cody were in gowns and saw Sasha's IV and said, “Oh, I'm sorry dears, I'm Nurse Lincoln. I didn't mean to scare you boys. But this is a private room.”

Blake spoke up and said, “We think this is our friend Sequoia, who died this morning. But this boys alive.”

Nurse Lincoln looking confused at them, and aware of who Sequoia was after Golden Fawn had asked her about the body earlier that morning, before they discovered it had vanished (a fact the boys were unaware of). She walked over to the bed wondering indeed if this was the missing body.

She picked up the chart, and after looking at it a minute said, “I'm sorry boys, but this boys name is Shawnee, and he's from the Native American Orphanage up in South Clear Lake.”

Sasha: as the hairs were standing up on his arms and legs said, “I've known Sequoia all my life, and have gone to school with him my whole life. And I'm telling you this is him three or four years ago!”

Nurse Lincoln: “I'm sorry sweetie. I understand your feelings and your loss, but this boys name is Shawnee and he was bit by a rattle snake while on a backpacking trip. They weren't able to carry him out and get him to the hospital in time. Even if he was your friend, he's brain dead, and the only thing keeping him breathing is this machine he's hooked up to.”

The boys looked at each other in total disbelief before the husky nurse escorted them back to Cody and Sash's room, tucked them back into their bed, and re-sedated them.

That concludes this chapter of Twinergy and Boys of Clear Lake. This is my first attempt at writing so any feedback, direction, or comments are appreciated. Please forward comments to the address below:
