Gwen had rolled out of bed ten minutes prior to Keegan setting her feet on the floor. They were in pain from muscles that had not been used in months. Gwen did not act as if her body ached but Keegan knew her roommate was in pain. For the first time since arriving at Weston, Keegan had a good nights sleep. She had showered and hit the mattress before eight o'clock. When Keegan was in the shower, Gwen had made her bed and put some of her things away. Keegan was surprised that her new roommate would go out of her way to make her feel comfortable. Gwen was out in the common room watching television when Keegan got out of the shower. So Keegan had not gotten a chance to thank her. "Hey thanks for fixing my bed up. I really appreciate it." Keegan said as she pulled her duffel bag from under the bed. "I figured you would need the sleep. I hope you didn't mind. I really wasn't sure where you wanted everything." "After Tara, I am just glad to be out of that room." Gwen stared at Keegan a little longer than necessary. Keegan felt a bit uncomfortable under her gaze. She had the same desire creep through her body. Maybe Gwen was playing her. She had been dreaming last night but she thought she heard Gwen call out her name. "Well I am glad you are here." Gwen finally broke her gaze as she pulled out a pair of socks from the drawer. They gathered their gear and joined a group of players that were heading to the field. Gwen chatted easily with one of the girls she watched television with last night. Keegan thought the girl looked familiar but she couldn't remember from where. The girl was better than the majority of the people trying out. Keegan said hello. "She only says hello until she gets to know you better." Gwen told the girl she was chatting with. Keegan felt the blood run to her face as Gwen teased her. Keegan watched Gwen interact with the girl. There was not the intense stare that she had been subject to ten minutes earlier. Keegan was quite happy about not seeing Tara as the group walked towards the field. On Monday morning she had been the first one at the field. She had even beat the coaching staff. After the evening with Tara, Keegan could not wait to escape the room. Tara had motivated her to get up and leave as fast as she could. For the first time, she felt like part of a team instead of having a target on her back. She set her bag down on the sideline and began to stretch out. In the distance, she could see Tara running towards the field trying not to be late. Gwen took a spot next to her. She smiled as she saw Tara running. "Miss you're old roommate?" She joked. " Lerner, you are just a funny girl aren't you." Keegan said as she threw a towel at her. The blonde brought smile to her face. Since seeing Gwen on Sunday, Keegan found she was looking for her all the time. She picked her out of the crowd. Keegan noticed everything about her. How she moved. The way she smelled. The attraction she had to the blonde was over powering. She could sense when Gwen walked into the room. The hair on her arm would stand up when she heard her voice or laugh. She noticed the small things like Gwen had a small mole on her right shoulder. Keegan had seen it the day Gwen stripped to take a shower. Their connection on the field was uncanny. She would turn and pass the ball to an area and Gwen would come out of no where to pick it up. On Monday, Keegan flicked the ball with her head and the ball deflected to Gwen and she kicked it passed the goalie. They were in sync. The more time she spent with Gwen the more she thought about her. Keegan watched Gwen carefully on Monday during camp. She knew she was good, but on Tuesday Gwen surpassed her expectations. Curtis divided the team into two. Keegan and Gwen were on the same team. Gwen was in the forward position. Keegan in the sweeper spot. Keegan had been playing club and AAU since she was twelve. She could spot good players. Gwen was a really good player. The familiar looking girl playing defense on the other side was also good. Gwen started the ball off and passed it back to Keegan in the sweeper position. Keegan passed the ball up to the wing. The girl from the common room stole the ball from the wing. Keegan's defense got the ball back and turned it up the field. She waited for her forwards to get in position. She had to do some footwork to keep the defense off her. Her timing was perfect as Gwen cut towards the goal. The ball sailed just over the defenses and landed at the top of the box. With a quick turn, Gwen sent the ball towards the goal. Tara outstretched hands could not stop the ball from hitting the netting. Tara threw the ball up field. She held her temper today. With the heat, she probably did not want to run any steps. She glared at Gwen. Gwen had her hands raised in the air. Keegan ran up and gave her a high five and a chest butt. They started to laugh as Keegan fell backwards loosing her balance landing on her butt. "Graceful!" Gwen said as she gave her a hand up. "Come on Vanilla." "You're not funny." Keegan smiled as she looked to see if anyone else had heard the comment. "Besides you are whiter than me." Keegan compared her forearm to the blonde's. As the afternoon session went on, it was clear that the opposite team was not a challenge. The inbound pass went to Keegan who was immediately surrounded by two defenders. She passed the ball to Gwen, who headed up the sideline. Keegan weaved her way through the defenders until she was clear. Gwen squared up and kicked the ball to Keegan. From just beyond the thirty-yard line, she sent the ball streaking towards the goal. The shot was a little high. Keegan held her breath. Tara leaped to punch the ball out of the goal. The ball barely missed the cross bar landing in the goal. With her arms raised above her head, she felt her teammates swarm her and tackle her to the ground. Gwen was the first one to congratulate her. Keegan felt her arms wrapped tight around her midsection. There was a couple of other team mates on top of the pile. She was crushed, but she was smiling. It felt good to be part of a team again. Tuesday night after tryouts Keegan went to the common room watching television. Gwen was sitting with a couple of the girls that walked with them to tryouts. "Hey." Keegan waved to them. She knew that one was good and the other two were okay. "Hi Keegan." The better player said. "Do you remember me?" Keegan looked at her a little closer. "She really bad with names. I had to tell mine six times." Gwen piped up. "Not..smarty." She turned attention back to the girl on the lounge. "I am really bad with names and faces. Sorry, I don't remember" Keegan looked closely at the girl. "Janet Daily, I played for " "Redwood, Hawks... I remember the scouting report." Keegan responded before Janet could finish her sentence. "Twenty, you played forward. You scored on us." "Yeah, I did. I kept the ball." Janet leaned forward. " I didn't recognize you at first. I wasn't sure if it was you. You look great. Your hairstyle is different and you lost weight. Gosh, your hair was so pretty. Gwen, it was longer than yours." "Really. You must have been some hotty!" Gwen flipped her ponytail. Keegan shot a look of surprise. "What's this must have been. I am a hotty!" Keegan put her hand on her hip and behind her head and spun around. The girls laughed. "Looks like your doing okay. Does your leg hurt?" "Depends." Keegan shrugged off the question. If Janet was from Redwood, she knew about the accident. "Didn't you have some big schools looking at you?" Janet probed. This question heightened all of their interest. "Had is the key word. Weston and Curtis were the only school to come through." Gwen gave her a strange look. She let the conversation pass and took a seat on the floor leaning on the smaller lounge. Gwen took a seat on the lounge. Keegan could feel any small contact the blonde made with her body. She was in physical pain from the feelings she was having. Her eyes closed as Gwen leaned closer to ask her a question. Gwen's hair fell forward onto Keegan's shoulder. Keegan turned her head to feel the mane against her face. The locks were soft and inviting. It had been a long time since someone made her feel this way. She was so attracted to and so aware of the girl leaning towards her. Her body was reacting with the empty feeling in her stomach and the aching in her loins. Keegan fantasized about what Gwen would look like naked. How her body would taste and feel. What it would feel like with Gwen hands on her body. Keegan shifted her position. Gwen's foot was at the nape of her neck and she could feel her sock rubbing against her. Keegan leaned back and covered Gwen's foot with her arm. She leaned her chin on her arm. She touched the smooth muscular, yet feminine leg under her. Maybe she was over analyzing Gwen. Maybe she was being nice. The small touches could be that of a friend. Maybe she was a touchy feely person. She should just resolve her thoughts to the fact that Gwen was a hopeless fantasy. "Why are you sitting on the floor?" She moved over for Keegan to sit next to her. There was not going to be a temptation of Keegan sitting next to her. "No I am okay. I feel better on the floor." Keegan lied through her teeth. If she moved closer to the blonde there was no telling what she would do. She could still feel Gwen's foot touching her neck. There was just too much sexual energy she was feeling. "I am going to bed," She looked at Gwen's blue eyes. They were bright and filled with excitement as they danced over Keegan's face. They stared at each other for a moment. "I am going to bed." Keegan repeated as she scrambled to her feet. "Good night everyone. I will see you bright an early in the morning." She wanted to get away from Gwen at this moment. Her heart was pounding and blood raced through her veins. She was not use to this feeling. She had felt this way about Sandy at one time. She wasn't ready for the pain. "Stay just for a little bit." Gwen pleaded. "I've got a lot on my mind. I'll see you in the room." Keegan said as she slowly walked down the hall. As she passed the stairwell door it opened and a woman in a Weston soccer tank top walked in. Keegan did a double take but it looked like the girl that was with Gwen on Sunday. She looked over her shoulder but continued to head to the room. She could hear Gwen talking with someone. She assumed it was the person who came through the door. Keegan began to think about Gwen's words. Maybe she wanted her to stay for other reasons. The over analyzing had done it toll on her this evening. She was going to go to bed and not think about Gwen Lerner. She changed into a pair of old sweat shorts and light shirt. Although the dorm was nice enough to have a bathroom in each suite, but the cooling system was something to be desired. In her bed she stared at the festive colors of Gwen's bed set, reds and yellows with Japanese designs through out. Her bed was the old set off her parent's bed, it was a faded blue with darned seams in it. If you looked closely, you could see through the fabric in places. The comforter might be old but it reminder her of home. She settled down. Sleep did not come fast. She flipped and flopped as thoughts of Gwen continued to race through her head. It was around midnight when she finally fell asleep. She did not hear Gwen come in. It was the sound of muffled cries that woke her. It took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness. Curled on her bed with her arms wrapped tight around a pillow was Gwen. Tears were streaming down her face. In her hand she had a tissue that she wiped away a tear. Keegan got out of bed and sat next to Gwen. "Hey, hey what's wrong?" Keegan put her hand on Gwen's shoulder. "I hate my life." Gwen said as she sat up next to Keegan. "Why does life have to be so complex?" Keegan had asked herself that question many times after the accident. "Sometimes things happen for reasons we can't see. Later on we realize that it was supposed to happen. Do you want to talk about it?" Gwen leaned into Keegan's shoulder. Keegan's first instinct was to wrap her arms around her tight. "I'm getting your shirt all wet." Gwen pulled back. Keegan wrapped an arm around Gwen and pulled her closer. They were quiet sitting in the dark. Their bodies were touching. The same awkward feeling ran through Keegan as she stroked Gwen's hair. Keegan's heart was pounding. She thought for sure that Gwen could hear it. "Gwen, I had a really rough time last winter. I thought my life was over, but I fought. I am not sure what's going on but nothing is that bad. I am sure you will get through it." "You are always so positive. When Tara was calling you names, you never once lost your cool with her. I would have thrown a fit." "Have you seen the size of Tara?" Keegan joked. She put a leg behind Gwen and hugged her from behind. "Some people are just mean and hurtful. Tara has some issues that she needs to work on. You can see it. She is unhappy with herself. She tries to deflect it on to other people she feels are weak." "You're not a weak person." Gwen said she snuggled closer into the crook of Keegan's arm. "I used to be. I let someone walk all over me." She thought of Sandy and the ways she felt used by her. "I won't do that ever again." "What happen?" The conversation had switched from Gwen's problem to Keegan's solution. "I was in love. I got hurt. " She pointed to the picture on the dresser of Michael and Sandy. "I'll tell you about that picture some day." Keegan pressed her face against Gwen hair. Her arms were wrapped around her body. If someone would walk in the room at this moment, they would question what the roommates were doing. "Was that your Dad with you on Sunday?" Gwen fingers fluttered back and forth from her bare leg to Keegan's knee. "Yeah, that's Bill. He's a trip. My mom stayed at home with my little sisters. Bill wanted to have bonding time. He actually wanted to stay to watch try outs." "That would be boring." "Not the way you play. You are really good. On the field, it's like I just know where you are going to be and I pass the ball. Boom you score. " "I don't score all the time. It's pretty cool how that happens. Do you think that we will make it? The upper classman are pretty good. You scored on Rose. I've never seen her beat that bad." "You've seen the team play?" Keegan asked. Gwen really tensed up at that question. "Do you want me to move?" Keegan asked. She not sure if it was an issue with the question or the way they were sitting. "No." There was the slight inclination of panic in Gwen's voice. "This is nice getting to know each other." "I feel like I am doing most of the talking." Keegan laughed a bit. "You are." Gwen laughed. "I am teasing. I came up a few times in the spring to watch some games. I am from Troy and a girl I went to high school with plays, Allison James. They call her AJ. "There was a hint of more to the story with AJ. "She came up tonight after you left." "Are you guy's pretty good friends?" Keegan questioned knowing the same girl was in the elevator with her on Sunday. "We used to be, but we have grown apart. It's weird. I used to think that she was such a great person. I don't think that anymore." Gwen looked a little sad at that moment. "You have two sisters?" "Yeah, Megan and Ashley. Meg is fourteen and a freshman. Ashley is thirteen going on thirty. What about you?" "I have a half brother, Evan is eight. My parents divorced when I was in the sixth grade. He lives with my Dad and his wife in Detroit. I am with Mom and who ever she is with at the time. My granddad, Pops. He is my heart. I lived with my grandparents through high school. My mom just gets stupid when a guy comes into her life. I can't tell you how many times she has been engaged or pre-engaged. I just have a hard time with it." "What about your Dad?" "Unlike Bill. Jeff is not a trip. He is a work alcoholic. He works all the time. Weekend's visits with him were a microwave dinner and me. I started to play soccer and Coach Timor would take me with his family on the weekends. I grew up with the Timor family. They were the couple that was in the elevator. Coach Timor was the high school coach. I think if it wasn't for Pops or the Timor's I'd be a really messed up kid." "My parents are really cool. With my leg and rehab, they helped me a lot. I wasn't in school for the second half of senior year. I was home schooled in the hospital. " "No prom, no senior skip day?" "None of that. The last day I set foot in the school was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. I did not even go to graduation. I regret it. I was avoiding going back. I am moving forward." "What were you avoiding?" Keegan took a deep breath. She was feeling comfortable and the feeling of Gwen wrapped in her arms calmed her fears. "I was afraid. There were rumors and talk. There were too many questions and answers that I did not have. Have you ever felt that if you took the chance, you would just ruin everything you had." Gwen nodded her head. "That's what it was like. No one came to see me in the hospital. I had gotten to the point where I was okay with me. I was proud of what I had accomplished. I did not need someone to bring me down. So I did not want to go." "You have just summed up my problem. I've been in this position where I need to do something that I have been putting off. I was afraid to go through with it. I am afraid of the consequences. But if I don't I know I will never be happy. On the other hand, I am afraid to put myself out there to be hurt or to change what I have." Gwen laughed " I am giving you the vanilla version of this mess I am in." "Vanilla version." Keegan squeezed her arms tight. "Well keep me posted. If you need to talk, I am here." She let her arms drop from around Gwen. She slowly moved from behind the blonde. "It's three in the morning. We are going to be hurting in the morning." Keegan stretched her five four frame as she stood. Keegan leaned towards Gwen and gave her a hug. "Thanks for talking." Gwen said as Keegan crawled back in her bed. She lay staring at the ceiling for a minute. She rolled and looked towards Gwen who was looking at her. "I am really glad that you are here." "I am too." Keegan rolled over and closed her eyes. Her mind reeled from what had just transpired. Gwen was either really gay or just a big flirt. Keegan hoped that her roommate was really gay.
