Chapter 8--Tuned In Chris was over Chet and over men that could not accept him. The spoon clanked as he vigorously stirred his almost empty cup. "Want more or you forming a bell chorus," Stella was all smiles as she poured more coffee into his cup. "You need to take it out on the guy and not my pottery." She gave Chris a sympathetic pat on the shoulder and left him to his brooding. Juan slid into the seat opposite Chris, far too much sunshine. "Where's Tom?" "Likely sleeping in. Sure he and Toby had a late night. May have invited the twins over for leftovers." Chris stared at his cup. "Grumpy this morning. I'll just leave and come back when you are civil." Chris looked up, "Sorry, just fixating on an asshole." "The police stud?" "Yea, he walked out on me last night when he found I was in transition. I mean, I expect it sometimes, I mean my fucking father for one. But I thought he liked me." "Fuck him. One bottom feeding carp got away. Why fret when there is a whole world of rainbow trout." Juan did a sweeping gesture at the big window abutting the booth. "And you always have me in a pinch." Juan batted his eyelashes. Chris laughed, "How could I ever refuse Elsie the Cow lashes." Juan threw a paper napkin at Chris, "Ass" and then batted his eyelashes again. Chris's phone rang, he glanced and answered, "Hey sis, how are you doing, everything okay. You're calling early." Chris mouthed to Juan "My sister, Brit." Juan mouthed back "Duh" Chris threw back Juan's napkin. "Did I interrupt anything," Britney gave a small sly chuckle. "Nay, just having breakfast with Juan at the deli." "You like the place?" "Yea, great food and the owners are like family. What's prompting the early call?" "You know you made national news." Chris did not respond. "I and the parental units were watching the news last night when the piece about you slugging the pervert came on. Dad said how the guy who throw the punch made him proud to be a man." She paused to build suspense. "Of course, I couldn't let that go." "You didn't" "Sure did, I casually mentioned that that man was you. Of course, he got all parental and wanted to know how I knew. I proudly said, `We had lunch last week at the Drake before you flew to New York.' I gave him one of my sweet and innocent looks." "I bet that really pissed him off." "I, you know how red Dad gets when he is frustrated. Fire engine. Of course, he looked at mom and asked if she knew. Dear timid mom just nodded." "I'm surprised dad didn't have a coronary." "It gets better, Dad quickly changed the channel and stopped on TMZ, which just happened to have a close up of your fist and the guy's jaw. All Dad could say was, `At least, he knows how to throw a punch." She paused to catch her breath and then continued. "He used he for you, that is real progress. After that things went downhill because Mom kept saying that you need to come home, the New York isn't safe." "They know I won't." "Yea I do, I finally lost it and said that." "You what?" "I said that you will never come home because they kicked you out of the house, and why should you feel welcome and face the same abuse. Mom lost it and ran running to her bedroom crying. Dad head twirled between the bedroom and me. He asked me to go apologize to Mom. I said I would, but he knew I was telling the truth. Then I stomped out to see Mom. Dad disappeared into the garage and started pound something furiously." "I appreciate your confronting them, but I don't want you to be in any trouble. You still have to live there." "No things are really good. Afterwards, dad came up to my bedroom. I was still fuming. He said I could go on the field trip to New York. I specifically stated I would see you. He said yes he knew and hoped I could give him love from Mom." "That is very exciting, when are you coming?" Chris's eyes glistened when he whispered to Juan "My sister's coming for a visit." "The week before Memorial Day." "Will you have time; I mean you are with your class." "Half my class wants to meet you. You're a New York model. You're semi-famous." "I am not even faintly famous." Chris chided. "You've been on national TV. That's pretty famous." "I look forward to it. I have a project for an agency for the next three weeks. After that I don't know my schedule." Chris stopped thinking about his schedule. "That's the week of Ariel's Gallery opening, and there are friends I would like you to meet: Zoe and Slim and of course Juan." "I almost had a pee accident from excitement." "Your chaperones won't mind you ditching?" "They expect it. My art teacher wants to meet you. He's gay, and I think he wants to see the Apple's gay life." "I have not been to many bars. You know I'm not 21, yet, so it does limit. I've been to just a biker leather bar and tonight Juan and I are going to a drag show that someone we know is the hostess." "Leather bars and drag queens, you are not the kid I knew three years ago." Juan could hear her laugh and grinned at Chris. "Got to run, meeting friends for coffee at Waffle Mans. See you in a few weeks, but talk to you sooner with more details. Luv ya." "You too." Chris sat back feeling warmth wash through is whole body. "Your sister's coming to town. That is exciting. Will I get to meet her?" "Of course, I want her to meet everyone important to me." Chris grinned at Juan barely able to contain his excitement. "You will love each other." "Your sister's coming to town?" Benjie slid into the booth next to Chris. "Is she hot like you?" Chris gave Benjie a solid punch in the shoulder, "That hurt, what was that for?" "You're hitting on my baby sister that why. And she is not even here." "Look man, sorry about that, but if she is anything like you, I'm sure she could beat the crap out of me if I tried anything stupid." "It's not her you need to worry about." The glower from Chris would turn back the zombie hoard. "Okay, man, but at least introduce her to me?" "You can wave at twenty feet away." "Killing me man." Juan laughed, "Can you hold off the caveman until May. We have computer shopping to do." Benjie stood, still rubbing his shoulder. At the door, Chris heard Stella bellow a laugh. Juan took Chris to Vic's Computer Emporium. It was a vast warehouse with a central display area. "This place is not fancy, but it has the best inventory and prices for 30 miles." Chris just gawked at the vast display. "Hey, Juan," came a voice, followed by a young man in a Vic's Computer Emporium T-shirt. "Been awhile, what you need. Just got in some SS drives with 5 ter." "That's rad, but were shopping for a computer system for my friend." "Gaming, business, porn." The young man winked at Juan and Chris. "Chris this is Thaddaeus, He and I go back to high school." "Hey, Chris, nice to meet cha. Juan was the nerdy kid I liked to harass at school. Who knew I'd end up in a nerdy place like this." Thaddeus spread both arms, "And please call me Thad. He just calls me Thaddeus to annoy me." Thad gave Juan a friendly slap on the shoulder. "Revenge for high school," leaning closer to Chris. "Thad was my best friend and saved me from several pummelings." "What are looking for Juan?" Thad's smile was cute, with the gap between his upper center teeth. "Laptop with solid HD, 64 ram min, high mem, fast, minimum of three USBs, HDMI port, printer port, sound jacks." Juan pause. "Color printer with scanner and fax, and the usual cables to create surround sound." Bored, Chris wandered off to look at the keyboards. "Chris," Juan yelled and Chris returned. "What do you want to spend?" "I don't know, two or three thousand. I trust you to get what I need." "We can find you something good for that." Thad smiled and led Chris and Juan down the aisles. Two hours later, Chris had a laptop, printer, quality speakers, mouse, game controls, and miles of cables. "Glad I got you, Juan, to help put this all together." "Putting this together is going to be fun for me." Juan smiled, He turned to Thad, "Just two more things. The Yamaha piano and Bose head phones." He smiled at Chris, "Saw you eyeing them and had a little room in your budget." Chris bounced on the balls of his feet, "Thanks," With Benjie's help, Chris and Juan pulled everything out of the cab and upstairs. Chris ordered pizza and fussed around helpless while Juan and Benjie, sitting on the floor, put the systems together. Chris realized that he would need a desk or something other than the dining room table. After three hours of pizza, soda, and general goofing around, his system was ready. The laptop was paired with his TV, printer, and speakers, all wireless. The last piece set up was the piano. "Can you play something?" Benjie asked, not sure he wanted an answer. Chris smiled slightly. The piano was on the dining room table along with the computer, which made it awkward, but he launched into Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, morphing into Mozart's variations, and ending with a honkytonk version. Finished, he ran a loving hand along the top. He did not realize until then how much he missed playing piano. It was a lover returned. "Man, you can play," beamed Benjie. Juan just sat and smiled. Benjie headed toward the door, "Got to run." He sent out a mischievous smile. "Got a date." Just before he left, he turned to Chris, "Don't let my Aunt or Uncle hear you play because they will insist you play in the deli." "You're good at that," Juan said from the sofa. "Very good. Have lessons?" "About ten years. We had a piano in the living room, right in front of our picture window." Chris chuckled. "The location was not for better light but to impress the neighbors on how cultivated we were. I would play for family parties. My mother liked to entertain, a lot. I learned how to be the perfect hostess, mixologist, and entertainer. Of the three, the last was the most fun. I have what is called an audio eidetic memory; I hear a piece of music once, can play it, but even better, remember it. As I grew older, my repertoire increased to include not only classical pieces but pop stuff too." "That explains how well you played at Slim and Zoe's at Easter." Juan and Benjie sat back and let Chris play, until Benjie said he needed to split--a hot date.
