Sara immediately walked over to Bobby and kissed his cheek and gave him a loving hug, thanking him from the bottom of her heart. Her father, Jack, also walked over and shook his hand and gave him a hug, tears running and unable to speak because of his emotional state. Sara's mother, Rachael, kissed his cheek and thanked him for his thinking and actions, tears also pouring down her face. After a minute or so, the Frankel parents overcame their emotions and gleefully greeted the three new friends-to-be. Sara asked Bobby if she could have a moment in private with him and he told her that she could. They walked over to a far corner and sat down across a table from each other. "Mr. Thomas, you were like a guardian angel for me when you rescued me from that creature. I will be forever in your debt for what you did," Sara said, quietly. "Sara, I am so sorry that I didn't get there in time to prevent him from doing what he did to you. I have already had nightmares about it," Bobby told her softly, tears streaming down his face. "Mr. Thomas, the important thing is that you were able to stop him from probably getting me pregnant. How could you have done more? He had just gotten his penis barely into me when you stopped him," Sara added. "But he took from you something that you will never again have and I feel responsible," Bobby insisted. "Oh, Mr. Thomas, if you are talking about my virginity, he did NOT!" Sara hastened to say, "Will you keep my secret if I tell it to you?" "Ahhh, y-yes, o-of course, Sara," Bobby stuttered. "I lost my virginity a year ago being stupid and smoking a joint of pot with a boy. I was scared out of my mind of my parents finding out and I confided it to Uncle Joshua who took me to a doctor friend of his who examined me and gave me pills to make sure that I would not get pregnant. My uncle is one of the most level headed people that you will ever meet. I love him so much! Now you and he are the only ones to know my secret," Sara confessed. "But, Sara, I saw blood.... ," Bobby countered. "That nasty animal forced my legs apart and scratched my vagina with a ragged fingernail, which has become infected even after being cleaned and treated at the emergency room. No one remarked except to comment on how lucky I was to have not gotten hurt worse. I have had nightmares about him each night since," Sara explained. "Oh, Sara, you don't know what a relief it is to hear this," Bobby answered, "I have felt so badly about failing you. You are so pretty and sweet, I just couldn't stand it! Thank you so much for telling me." "You are the sweet one, Mr. Thomas, and I shall never forget what you did," Sara gushed. "Please come over and meet my new family, now," Bobby offered. Bobby and Sara walked back across the room with arms around each other, smiling happily. "My hero and I are now fast friends," Sara announced to the other 6 people in the room. "You all should know that this is the first time Sara and I have had an opportunity to speak together. I am quite impressed with her attitude of realism and acceptance. I am very glad to get to know her and hope to see a lot more of her. Bobbie, I also think that you two will get along well," Bobby said, still smiling. "Mr. Thomas, I heard some small talk while at the police department that you were an investigator for the Army," Sara brought up. "Yes, I was, and Sara, I cannot stand being called "Mr. Thomas" by my friends. Please call me Bobby, I am a very informal guy," Bobby stated. "Mom, Dad, is that permissible? It does fit him, don't you think?"Sara asked. "Owing to the peculiar circumstance of your first meeting, I think that all usual rules of societal protocol are null in light of his stated request, My Dear," replied her dad. "Good! That's settled, then," Bobby quipped, happily. "Why don't we get our dinners ordered and then get to know each other. I think my family will quite enjoy learning about this unique new family-to-be," Josh recommended. "May we start with drink orders?" Suzie asked. To everyone's favor, cold water was the unanimous choice, about which all smiled. Bobbie suggested that they tell the Steins and Frankels about how she and her mom met Bobby. Bobby looked at Janet, who gave an approving nod. Bobbie was elected to tell the story and the five sat in awe of the account. She was careful in her wording of the details regarding the forced actions that she had endured, but they all understood. After hearing the story, the Steins and Frankels were all in tears. Sara moved over next to Bobbie and held her close as she cried her heart out, feeling sympathy for her new friend. Bobbie held Sara close and explained how meeting Bobby had turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to her and her mother. Sara saw the point but just felt so bad that it had gone the way it did. Bobbie pointed out that if it hadn't, then the sick rapist would still be on the prowl and that she was glad to have made the sacrifice that was the beginning of the end of the rapist's career. She also pointed out that Sara had been raped while she had only subjected to humiliation but no real physical pain or damage. Sara's mom and dad immediately pointed out that Bobbie had, indeed, been raped both actually and statutorily. Bobbie conceded the point, but saying that she thought that what Sara had endured was worse. "Well, we live life as it is given us," Josh exclaimed. "Le'chaim!!" Bobbie said enthusiastically, raising her water glass in toast to the group. "Le'chaim!" the rest answered, toasting them all. "Now, WHERE did you get that, Bobbie?" Josh exploded, grinning, ear to ear. "Um, well You said that we live life as it is given us, Mr. Stein, and I happen to agree with that concept," Bobbie answered. "But, that is Yiddish. Where did you learn that?" Josh persisted. "Well, not from Kabbalah, although I sort of feel it may be covered there, and when I finish my piecemeal kabbalistic studies I should know for certain. I first became aware of the phrase, actually, while reading the same Jewish cuisine cookbook that I mentioned to you earlier. It seemed apropos when you stated that life is as it is given, so I felt impelled to toast life," Bobbie explained. "Are you telling us that you are studying Kabbalah, Bobbie?" Sara's dad, Jack asked. "Yes, although I haven't done it in 5 years because of other interests. I am fascinated with the obscure origins, but the ancient Hebrew is rather taxing for me to master, so I have, more or less, put Kabbalah "on the back burner" for the time being. There are so many versions of it that I feel the need to become familiar with all and draw conclusions from the whole. I do intend to pursue it again one day," Bobbie mused, rather apologetically. "Bobbie, do you have any idea what your I.Q. might be?" Rachael queried. "No, M'am, but my dad and mom are arranging to have me tested for that and other general areas in the next few days," Bobbie replied "I can hardly wait for the outcome. I hope that I may be made privy when it is decided," Rachael responded. "I hate to interrupt this multifaceted discourse, but is anyone ready to eat the evening meal?" Suzie asked, taking advantage of the insightful quietness that followed the last conversational element. "YES", was the unanimous response. "Very well, I'll bring in the appetizers," Suzie said. Suzie quickly wheeled in a cart loaded with chopped liver, gefilte fish, knishes, and pickled herring. Matzos and bagels along with several other breads were in abundance. Everyone eagerly began eating and having lively and pleasant conversations, punctuated by frequent laughter. After 15 to 20 minutes, Suzie went back to her kitchen and returned with chicken soup, matzo balls and beet borscht, accompanied by a large bowl of sour cream. When everyone had finished their soup, she brought out a cart of vegetables and meats, which opened the eyes of all present. "There's sweet and sour cabbage, baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, roast chicken, haluskes and corned beef. If there is anything else that you want, tell me and I will tell you if it is available," Suzie offered. "With this feast, what else could one want?" Jack asked. Everyone laughed and began serving themselves from the carts, once again having upbeat conversations with everybody and nobody in particular. "Be sure to save room for dessert," Suzie ventured. The dessert cart was uncovered and a modest array of delicious pastries, cookies and strudels were open for discussion and consumption. "Oh, my! These strudels look fantastic! What is the filling?" Bobbie asked excitedly. "There are 3 different fillings, Bobbie, apple, poppy seed and cherry," Suzie happily reported. "That would be apple, MOHN and cherry? I have always wanted to try mohnstrudel, it sounds so delicious. Do you make yours with lekvar and raisins?" Bobbie asked. "Yes, white raisins and lemon rind, too," Suzie said, laughing. "NOM, NOM, NOM! I can taste it now, should I slice it or eat it whole?" Bobbie teased. "However you want it, suit yourself. There are plenty where these came from!" Suzie assured her. Although she did slice one, she managed to eat it all, much to the delight of all present. The merriment and bonding of the 8 people continued until well after 10 PM. It was decided that more of these get-togethers must happen as frequently as possible since they all played off each other and had a wonderful time talking, discussing, kibitzing and joking. Everyone helped Suzie return the remains of the dinner to the kitchen, load the dishwasher and generally clean up after themselves. Josh informed Bobby that he and Suzie hosted the Frankels each Friday evening, since none were "Practicing Jews" and the deli was not open on Saturdays and Sundays. They offered a standing invitation to drop in for the informal affair whenever they could, their company being welcome. The party disbursed and went their separate ways. Bobby and company started, wearily, toward the park, Bobbie crashed on the back seat, Janet sitting next to Bobby, and leaning on his shoulder. Bobby put his arm around her and they snuggled together for the 20 minute ride. Bobbie was fast asleep when they arrived at their cabin, so Janey unlocked the door as Bobby carried Bobbie in and put her down on the bed. The two parents undressed their daughter, then themselves and climbed into the bed with her. For the first time, all three were asleep instantly. *TO BE CONTINUED* You are welcome to email me with feedback, positive or negative. Thanks!
