Chapter 12, Would You Take My Son?

Tuesday, May 25th, I expected to see Donny on my porch as I arrived home, but he was nowhere to be seen. Instead, Miss. Chen showed up, knocking at my door around 5 PM. Parked at the curb was a black Suburban with blacked-out windows.

"Mr. McKinney, I need to speak with you about Donny."

Oh, shit, busted. I'm going to jail for sexual abuse of a child under 14. My mind is racing trying to remember which countries don't have extradition treaties with the U.S.

"Please come in."

She took a seat on the couch and took some time trying to figure out what she wanted to say. She took a deep breath and began. The whole time I was visually searching her for a wire.

"My father and grandfather are the head of a very wealthy, very powerful family that is politically connected at the highest levels of government in China. I didn't want to be part of it, and went into hiding from them when I first came to America and enrolled at UCLA 15 years ago.

"My father's men found me yesterday. I am being returned to China. I have no choice. There are people watching me, even as we speak, so I do not slip away again.

"Donny is not allowed to come with me. While he is my son, he is not Chinese, he is too American. My family will not condone having an American child in the family."

"Well tell them that's just too bad. Tell them he's your son and he's coming with you!"

"Mr. McKinney, you do not understand how powerful and strict my family is. If I do not go along willingly, Donny will disappear and I would resurface in China without him. If I tried to take him, we would be separated and he would simply disappear. All of my family's enemies simply disappear. This is the way my family works. My family is more powerful than the US Mafia, the Italian Cosa Nostra, or a Mexican cartel.

"I will be leaving for China tomorrow night. Mr. McKinney, would you take my son?"

"Take him? Where, to China for you? I`m not sure what you mean."

"No, I mean take him, as your son. I talked with Donny last night. I asked him who he would want to live with if something was to happen to me. His immediate answer without even thinking about it, was you. He says he loves you very much. My father is giving me this opportunity to find someone to take him. My father has assured me that he will leave Donny alone if someone will agree to take him and abide by his terms. He will be provided for with whomever I select.

"If you consent to take Donny, my father's lawyers will come in a few minutes to speak with you. The people outside are listening to this conversation right now.

"What about Donny's real father? I asked."

"I do not know who the real father is. I became pregnant at a campus party at UCLA and Donny is the result. I never knew who the father was and Donny's birth certificate does not list a father.

My mind is spinning at this point. This woman is obviously very intelligent. She has a degree from UCLA and is yet working as a laborer in a hotel. Her command of the English language is near perfect. Much better than she had let on. It is apparent that she has been doing everything to stay below the radar, and has been found anyway. I don't want anything to happen to Donny. I do love him. Not knowing what else to say, I said "OK, Donny can come live with me."

"Thank you, Mr. McKinney. He will not just come live with you, he will be your son. The lawyers will take care of everything. It will be 100% legal. You and I will never speak again. I will not speak to Donny again after tomorrow morning when he leaves for school. It has been arranged that I will have a medical emergency at work and be taken to a hospital where I will pass away. And perhaps, it would be best for Donny to believe that story. It will be easier for him to believe his mother died and that I did not abandoned him, even though it was for his own good.

"I must go now, thank you Mr. McKinney. Love your son. Love my son. And with that she walked out and got into a black Suburban with Diplomatic license plates and disappeared around the corner.

Moments later another Black Suburban pulled up in front. A tall Chinese man approached my door and I let him in.

"I need a sample of your signature. Please sign this with your legal signature. It was a blank piece of paper. We need a copy of your signature for documents that you need to sign.

I had so many questions. I hardly knew where to start.

"You are going to create a new birth certificate for Donny?

"No sir. We will fix his original certificate."

"What about copies that may be out there?"

"There is one is in the Social Security files, there is one in the birth hospital file, and one in the Public Education files. There are no other copies that matter. We will fix these."

"But how will you fix it if it is in official data files?

"Please Mr. McKinney, give us some credit. These are not very secure files for our level of expertise. By this time tomorrow, Donny Chen will never have existed and Donny McKinney will have a complete paper trail going back 13 years to a UCLA frat party, which apparently, you attended and had sex with Miss. Chen.

"Let me tell you what is going to happen. Tomorrow, Miss Chen will have an industrial accident at work. She will be taken by ambulance to Memorial Hospital where she will be declared dead. Donny will be taken out of school and informed of his mother's passing. He will be taken to the Los Angeles office of the Chinese Embassy for a few days. Social Services will determine that you are his father and sign over custody to you. He will be returned here with all appropriate paperwork indicating that you are his father. He will not have to go back to school at Lincoln Elementary. School ends in a few days anyway.

"Thank you for your time I must be going. We will see you in a few days."

And he disappeared into the black abyss of a Suburban with blacked out windows.

Donny stopped showing up either at the YMCA or on my front porch. As promised, a few days later a very official-looking team of Chinese lawyers arrived at my home. The lead official presented his card showing he and one of the other Consular Officers was from the Chinese Embassy, Washington D.C. The other two Consular Officers were from the Los Angeles office including the man I saw Tuesday night. We sat around my dining room table. The lead lawyer opened a very official-looking brief case with the Chinese Embassy seal embossed on the front and removed a stack of papers.

"Here is an original copy of Donny's birth certificate. It was dated over 13 years ago. He is now listed as Donald James McKinney. You are now and always have been, listed as the father on the certificate.

"This is his updated Social Security Card with the corrected name on it.

"This is his updated school record with his name changed, you listed as father, and his new address." He has missed the last week of school, but yet he still had straight "A's" for the entire year. I glanced through his prior years reports. He had never received a grade below an "A" in his life.

"Did you adjust any of these grades?" I inquired.

"No sir, just the name.

I knew this kid was smart!

"Here are several notarized copies of his mother's death certificate in case you need them," (dated May 26th). Apparently she died just as she told me she would.

"We also found a small insurance policy. We have filed a claim for you. You should be hearing from them in a couple weeks. Any benefit from it is tax free.

You will need to update your employer insurance to include Donald as your dependent, then I suggest you find him a new doctor. His current medical records have disappeared. There was nothing of significance in them. His dental records have been purged as well. We saved you a copy of his immunization records.

When you file your taxes for this year you are now Head of Household with Donald as your dependent.

He handed me a shoe box. These are all of his family photos and other such mementos with no link back to China.

For all means and purposes, you have always been Donald's father but were unaware of his existence till Social Services contacted you after his mother died.

"Social Services didn't contact me," I refuted.

"Yes sir, they did. This form dated May 28th is the Social Services paperwork showing the transfer of Donald to your custody as his father." It must be official, my signature was exactly where it was supposed to be. The signature of the services agent was illegible.

"Donald has been told that you are his father. That Miss. Chen moved here a couple years ago to find you and enrolled Donald in your YMCA. Before she could tell you or Donald, she had the medical emergency and passed away May 26th.

"You may make up your own story as to how you happened to get her pregnant, but you are not ever to tell him the truth about his family. He is never to come looking for his mother or any of her family. It is best he never know about them."

Lastly, he handed me an envelope. This contains $50,000. This is a gift from his great grandfather to you for accepting the child. It can be used any way you wish. If you ever have any issues, you may contact me through the Chinese embassy. Just call any Chinese embassy office and mention Donald James McKinney and I will contact you within 24 hours.

One of the other lawyers pulled out a two-way radio and barked a command in Chinese. As we walked out onto the front porch another black Suburban pulled up in front. Three burley Chinese men rolled out and began bringing boxes into the house. "Where do you want these?" I pointed to the living room floor. They even brought his bicycle inside.

The guy in charge explained the Chen apartment had been cleared and these were Donny's things.

When they completed the unloading, one opened the back door of the suburban and Donny climbed down.

"Daddy!" he screamed. I dropped to my knees as he ran to my waiting arms. We hugged and held each other close. Donny started crying and I cried with him.

The two Suburbans left and Donny and I stood on the front porch holding hands. He looked up at me and asked, "She's really gone?"

"Yes Donny, she's gone. And he started crying again. I held him close for a moment, then picked him up and carried him inside.

George and Martha had seen all the activity and came over knocking on the door and I invited them in.

What's going on Aaron? Martha asked.

I simply replied, "Donny's mom died a few days ago."

Martha held out her arms to Donny and held him and cried with him.

We all sat around the living room. If she's passed why is Donny with you?

Let's wait a minute, I'm going to ask Jenifer and Karen to come over. I called their number and asked that they come over, now. They arrived two minutes later.

"What's going on?" Jenifer asked as they entered the front door.

I repeated, "Donny's mom died May 26th."

"Oh my God, Donny! We're so sorry." Donny started crying again.

"It's a long story, and I want all of you to hear it. Donny, what did they tell you?"

Through his sobs, he told the story. "Wednesday, I was called to the principal's office and a man from the Chinese Embassy took me out of school and told me mom was killed in an accident at the hotel where she worked. That's it. They took me to the Chinese embassy in Los Angeles. Some Social Services people came and talked with me about you and how I knew you, and asked if I wanted to come live with you and I said yes, but they wouldn't let me till today. Later they told me that you're really my father. Is that true? I've missed you so much! His sobs overtook him and he cried again in my arms.

As his crying subsided back into sobs, I told the story I had been practicing since Tuesday.

"Donny, 14 years ago while I was a student at USC, I was invited to a fraternity party at UCLA. Everyone there got pretty drunk and there was a lot of sex. Apparently, your mother, who was a student at UCLA, was also there and I ended up getting her pregnant. You were born 9 months later. Your mother never told me about you.

"According to the embassy, a couple years ago, she tracked me down and moved you and herself here to Los Altos. She enrolled you in the YMCA where I volunteered so that you and I would meet. I think she planned to tell you and me about each other once we got to know each other, but never got around to it.

They gave me your original birth certificate and social security card. Your name is actually Donald James McKinney and always has been. Your mom just never told you.

The Chinese Embassy was involved because your mom was a Chinses citizen and you're an American citizen.

Apparently, they couldn't find any relatives of your mother back in China, so you have no relatives on that side of your family.

I'm taking a leave of absence from my job for 3 months. You have a whole new family to meet. You have 2 great grandmothers, 2 grandparents, 3 uncles, 2 aunts, and 17 cousins.

Getting ready for our trip a couple weeks later I got a letter from an insurance company. I didn't recognize the company and almost threw it away as an advertisement. What stopped me was the Chinese company name. I opened it and pulled out a two page letter. Dear Mr. McKinney, We were sorry to hear of the passing of Miss. Chen. Yada, yada, yada... Please find enclosed the death benefit from her policy with you listed as beneficiary. At the bottom of the second page was a check for $15,000,000.

My hands began shaking, I reread the letter several more times. It looked like a legitimate check for 15 million dollars. Donny and I were set for life. I called Donny to the car and we took the check to the bank to deposit it. I didn't tell Donny how much it was for. The bank teller almost gave it away and I asked for the branch manager. I was invited into his office and I had Donny sit in the waiting room.

He wanted to talk about investments and such, but I just told him to deposit it in my checking account. I would take care of the other stuff later after I had time to process and decide what I wanted to do.

We took off in my Suburban a couple days later on a cross country trip to let Donny meet all his new relatives. The first stop was, my mom and dad outside Columbus, Ohio. I had a couple brothers and one sister that also lived in the area and introduced them to their new nephew. Each time, I had to repeat the same story to the point where I was getting real good at telling it and Donny no longer cried during the retelling.

While at mom and dad's I made a call to Trudi, an acquaintance that worked in real estate. I told her I was looking for a new house. It had to have a large pool with a backyard so secluded that no one could see. I joked that I planned to swim naked. It had to be near a school that specialized in advanced students. It needed to have at least 5 bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, a multi-car garage with a workshop, a theater would be nice, but wasn't a deal breaker. Maid's quarters would also be nice. It was to be located near the ocean, but not necessarily on the beach. And I preferred large open rooms. I told her I would be home in 3 weeks and would be ready to see what she found. I asked her to send pictures of the houses and the school information to the house so I could read up before visiting.

I also called Natural Arches to inform them that I would need a lot in the permanent section to place a mobile home. The management would maintain it and rent it out for me on dates I provided. The arrangement would pay for the land lease, and utilities.

I visited a couple mobile home sales sites near my parents' home as that area of the country was where many mobile homes were built. I quickly decided a single wide would never do. So it had to be a double or nothing. I found the basic design I liked and sat down with the sales manager to discuss options and extras.

"Look," I told him. "I understand Base Price, Customizations, Site Prep, Foundation, Taxes, Fees, Delivery, On-Site Building, Utilities. Here's what I want, these are the customizations I want. How much do I write on the check to get it done?"

He tried coming up with a final number, but couldn't so he broke it into two payments one fixed price for the home delivered to Natural Arches and an estimate of the costs to install it in Natural Arches. He gave me the fixed price and I wrote the check. I gave him the contact's name at Natural Arches to work with to get it installed with everything I wanted. I gave him a second check for more than the estimated costs and told him to get started, I'd make up the difference if it wasn't enough when everything was done or if there was extra left over, he could give bonuses to deserving workers who went above and beyond getting it done.

I called Natural Arches and told them to expect a call starting the work to install a brand new double wide, ultra-modern mobile home. They had to requote me a new land lease price for the double wide installation. There was also to be a driveway all the way down the back of the house, and a 30 foot wide side yard.

Donny and I continued on our trip meeting his new cousins, aunts, uncles, and great grandparents, and visiting interesting sights along the way.
